he first permanent settlers in the Daviess County were in present-day Reeve Township in 1801. New settlement continued until the War of 1812 and the town of Liverpool was founded. For three years, conflict with the British and Native Americans caused new settlements to stop, and existing settlers built a series of forts to protect them. After the war, Liverpool was given the more patriotic name of Washington. After Indiana gained statehood, Daviess County was formed in 1816. The boundaries were altered numerous times, eventually reaching their current state in 1828.
securing the future for the cities of Odon and Elnora. The first railroad builders were also met with the discovery of rich sources of coal. The towns of Montgomery and Cannelburg then became important stations for shipping coal along the O&M road.
Construction of the Wabash and Erie Canal reached Daviess County in 1847 and Maysville and Plainville became important canal depots. Although the canal was short-lived, it affected settlement of the county through the influx of Irish laborers who stayed and as a means of transportation for the brief time it was open in the 1850s and 1860s.
The 20th Century saw the slow decay in importance of railroads (last passenger service was in 1971) and small farms nationwide with that impact reflected on the Daviess County population and economy. During World War II, the Crane NWSC naval base was opened in Martin County with considerable effect on the region. The western section of the county is famous for its sand and its melons and vegetable growing. The southern part of the county was impacted by the Glendale Fish and Game area, which was started in the 1950s. The Old Order Amish, a reclusive, traditionalist religious group whose members first arrived in Daviess County in 1868, saw their economic and cultural influence rapidly increase in the latter part of the century through farming, the construction industry, tourism and a rapidly-growing population.
It was the coming of the railroad, which provided the spark to create much of modern Daviess County as we know it. In 1857, the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad between Cincinnati and St. Louis was completed. Washington grew quickly, incorporating as a city in 1871. This growth was multiplied in 1888 with the construction of the great O&M repair yard, which served as the industrial backbone of the city for most of the next 100 years. Two additional rail lines were added through the county during the 1880s,

usiness and industry in Daviess County is diversified. The local area is known for its entrepreneurial spirit. Many successful and creative businesses dot the landscape here and are the result of hard work, good ideas and the willingness to take risks. County and city governments, along with public and private schools, have been able to work together for the betterment of the entire community. WestGate @ Crane Technology Park, a threecounty effort between not only Daviess, but also Greene and Martin counties, now employs almost 900. It qualifies as a state Certified Technology Park by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, and represents a natural marketplace for defense contractors currently providing technical support, and research and development services to the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division in southern Indiana. Operations at WestGate include the $2 billion URS corporation, and SAIC, the nation’s seventh-largest defense contractor. Also at WestGate are ITT, Concurrent Technologies Corporation, Tri-Star Engineering, Crane Learning and Education Center, Stimulus Engineering, NAVMAR, CACL Crane Federal Credit Union, RayDar and Associates, Technical Services Corporation and Navonics. Ind. Gov. Mitch Daniels helped break ground in July 2011 for a new $8.8 million WestGate Academy, which is a 64,000-square-foot, twostory conference and academic institutional space which will serve as a business incubator and training facility for start-up and early-stage companies expanding their technology capacity. The new interstate passes within a few miles of WestGate, with a Crane interchange. Daviess County also actively solicits and engages with Foreign Direct Investment. Olon Industries, a Canadian-based wood product manufacturer, now operates its U.S. headquarters and chief manufacturing operations on Washington’s east side. Olon constantly updates its product to stay ahead of its competition.

Perdue’s Washington-based turkey processing facility, located at 65 S 200W, continues to be the county’s largest employer with more than 800 employees. Perdue’s other Indiana locations are a feed mill North of Washington, a breeder facility in Thornton and a hatchery in Vincennes. Perdue is a $4.6 billion food and agricultural company. It has 20,000 associates nationwide which produce more than 2.6 billion pounds of chicken and 260 million pounds of turkey each year, or 25 million meals per day. It also handles 189 million bushels of grain. Grain Processing Corporation, which employs about 145, makes an impact on the community well beyond its on-site employment. GPC buys about 30 million bushels of corn for its Washington plant annually. To put that in perspective, only about 15 million bushels are typically grown in Daviess County, so its market reach goes out about 75 miles. And, GPC’s arrival in Daviess County in 1999 led to several spin-off businesses.
Horizon Converting and Alliance Barrier located on Industrial Drive on Washington’s eastside, is a flexible packaging converter, manufacturing high-quality, solvent-free laminated roll stock for the food and nutraceutical industry. Since its beginning in 2007, Horizon has been audited by the American Institute of Baking and achieved AIB’s highest achievement recognition — Superior. Alliance is now open. Three-generation Jones Engineering does development work for NASCAR, while both Boyd Grain and Boyd and Sons continue to diversify as farmers who have branched out into construction, trucking and warehousing. Other small to mid-size manufacturers contribute to the diversity of Daviess County including three truss builders in Graber Post,

Daviess County Metal Sales and K and K Industries. More than 100 Amish-Mennonite work crews build in the community, or leave Daviess County each workday, bringing back income for both local businesses and families. Also, a new Amish produce auction barn brings new dollars and provides additional income for local families. Graber Steel Fabrication, in that same area, fabricates steel structures and makes equipment that is shipped throughout the U.S. More than 100 businesses, both small and large, including cabinet makers, vinyl-window makers, and bakeries, rely on the OdonCannelburg Road. The busy road is being upgraded by transportation officials which will include buggy lanes. The Odon area has seen growth on several fronts, including a new assisted care living facility, expansions to the meat locker, a new convenience store and a new furniture store. Also, Applied Logistics Services, Inc., headquartered in Odon, provides professional, analytical, engineering and administrative services. ALS made significant improvements to the old lumberyard building in Odon and is in

the process of renovating the former box and pallet building. MAVEN has renovated the former Star Glove building in Odon and provides renovation, new construction, design/build and abatement services for the Department of Defense and U.S. Government, with industrial clients throughout the Midwest and Southeast U.S. Berry Plastics, a leading manufacturer and marketer of plastic packaging headquartered in Evansville, IN, has a plant in Odon, which earlier had expanded to 29,000 square feet. In March 2011, plans were announced to add a new $5 million production line which will allow them to mix nine different kind of film ingredients. Long-time Odon family-owned business, Stoll Bros. Lumber, has also experienced growth through the construction at WestGate Crane Tech Park and in Odon. Also in the North Daviess area, Corn Pro designs and manufactures metal trailers used in construction, agriculture and has added a new dump trailer to its product line. And, TriStar Glove in Plainville, established in 2001, supplies gloves to the auto industry and employs almost 50.

Several Amish shops dot the rural landscape here and offer quilt material, collectibles, handcrafted furniture, cabinets, quilts, dolls, glassware, homemade jellies, candies, cheeses, meats, pickles and baked goods. Authentic Amish buffet-style restaurants are easily
accessible. Dinky Auction Center holds auctions on Friday evenings. A quilting shop in Downtown Washington ships material all over the world via Internet sales. The White River Antique Show in midSeptember at the Daviess County Fairgrounds attracts more than 15,000 annually. Visitors can see threshing machines, a one-room school in session, antique tractor pulls and old-fashioned processes including cidermaking, candlemaking, sorghum-making and engine-turned homemade ice cream. The Old Settlers Festival, held in Odon in mid-August hosts carnival rides, food and a kickoff parade.
The annual Daviess County Turkey Trot Festival is held in Montgomery the weekend following Labor Day. This festival features topnotch live entertainment, a beer garden, renowned turkey races, pig wrestling contests, mud volleyball, crafts, food, games and a carnival. There are a number of other smaller socials and festivals held throughout the county, including the Rail Fest in Downtown Washington in May.

Daviess County also has many opportunities for cultural activities including Veale Creek Theatre that provides five productions each year from May to December. Daviess County’s Historical Society operates the county museum, which displays various local artifacts. The Historical Society also meets at different sites located throughout the

county and runs programs that focus on the history of the different areas. Some tourists visit the county for the annual Carfest and Cruiz-In in September, while others come for the annual acclaimed Christmas lights at Eastside Park on from Thanksgiving until New Year’s Day.

aviess Community Hospital is a progressive rural hospital located at 1314 E. Walnut St. in Washington. It is committed to be a leader, in partnership with physicians, in providing quality healthcare services. The hospital serves nearly 38,000 residents in the area. DCH is governed by an 11member board, staffed by more than 70 physicians and employs more than 550 people. It provides medical disciplines and a variety of healthcare services that improve the health of communities in the area. Medical disciplines covered at DCH and associated clinics include family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, orthopedic surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology, endocrinology, emergency medicine, anesthesiology, gastroenterology, neurology, hematology, oncology, urology, ophthalmology, general surgery, otolaryngology, pulmonology, podiatry pathology, psychiatry, radiology, rheumatology and sleep medicine. The hospital also offers inpatient and outpatient surgery, cardiopulmonary services, cardiac rehab, laboratory and pathology services and radiology services including x-ray, ultrasound, CT, MRI, PET/CT, mammography, and stereotactic breast biopsy. In addition to a busy medical surgical unit, Daviess Community Hospital’s inpatient nursing units include intensive care,

Jasper Memorial and Good Samaritan Hospitals also have a presence in the community. The local area is also served by four nursing homes in Washington with Eastgate Manor Nursing Center, Hillside Manor, Prairie Village Living Center and Washington Nursing Center. In Odon, that service is provided by Ketcham Memorial Center. Some also offer rehabilitation services. Emerald House and The Legends, both in Washington, provide assisted living, as does Parkview Christian Home in Odon. Daviess County has a health office in an annex next to the courthouse, at 303 E. Hefron St., Washington, which assists with children’s immunizations. This office also oversees food inspections and septic system permitting and has local birth and death records available.
