Who maintains the levee? The maintenance division of Pierce County Water Programs maintains the Levee; the City of Fife maintains the asphalt portion only.

Why do we pay separate drainage district and city drainage utility fees? Drainage District 23 remains responsible for the ownership and maintenance of main drainage ditches in the north portion the City of Fife. The city’s utility is responsible for water quality issues and ownership, maintenance and improvement of branch drainage lines.

Where does the drinking water come from? The City of Fife buys all drinking water from Tacoma Water. The purchased water is mainly from the Green River.

Does my water have fluoride in it? Tacoma Water adds fluoride to the water, at approximately 1 milligram per liter dosage. Because the water we supply our customers is purchased from Tacoma Water, the water Fife customers receive contains fluoride.

How can I tell if I have a water leak? If you suspect you may have a leak, you can contact the City of Fife Water Division at (253) 922-9315 and the city will be happy to send a specialist to assist you in determining if you do have a leak, at no cost. You may also check yourself by looking at your water meter. All the water meters have a built-in leak detection indicator on the face of the meter register. Simply make sure that no water is being used at the time in your home or business, and then look at the meter register. If the leak detector – usually a small black triangle or a small red dial – is moving, then water is running somewhere and there is probably a leak.

What is the Safety Camera Program and does the program work? In a city like Fife, it’s more likely that a driver will be injured in a crash while running a red light than in any other type of accident. Fife’s Safety Camera Program has resulted in a 30 percent decrease in collisions at key intersections. All proceeds from fines go to the Public Safety Fund to be used specifically on safety enhancement projects. Simply make a full stop behind the marked white line before entering the intersection and you will not receive a ticket. w

dgewood is a wide spread and dynamic city of a little over 9,800 residents. The community is composed of picturesque farms, beautiful homes, friendly people and businesses. The City of Edgewood stretches approximately 8.9 square miles from Puyallup and Sumner to the south and east, Milton to the northwest and Auburn to the north and east. One of Edgewood’s significant landmarks is the Nyholm Windmill. The windmill was Edgewood’s first landmark and has become the formal symbol for Edgewood and is incorporated into the city’s logo. The windmill was on Peter Nyholm’s ranch, which became known as one of the finest ranches in the area producing hay, vegetables, fruit and dairy products. The study focused on direct, indirect and induced jobs. • 18,900 direct jobs: Includes trucking companies and railroads moving cargo to and from terminals, and warehouses, longshore workers, steamship agents and freight forwarders. • 11,100 indirect jobs: These jobs are generated in supporting industries and suppliers, and include office supply firms, maintenance and repair firms, and parts and equipment suppliers. • 18,100 induced jobs: These are jobs created by people directly employed by marine cargo operations re-spending their wages in the community on housing, food and other consumer goods. • The NWSA’s activities reach 443,000 jobs in the state if we factor in the farmers and manufacturers who ship products through the ports.

WORKING HERE

The Fife Milton Edgewood (FME) area is dependent on many industries. The region is firmly established with a diverse economy that includes trade, manufacturing, government, local schools and a variety of commercial activities. Fife is the gateway to the Port of Tacoma, which has a significant economic impact on the entire FME area. A study released in September 2014 demonstrates the 2013 impact of the marine cargo operations at the Ports of Seattle and Tacoma harbors. • Supported more than 48,000 jobs. • Generated nearly $4.3 billion in economic activity.

ABOUT THE STUDY

• Produced $379 million in state and local taxes to support education, police, fire services and road improvements. Marine cargo operations also generated $138.1 billion in total economic activity in 2013. That accounts for about one-third of Washington state’s gross domestic product. The figure includes revenue generated by port-related businesses as well as wages paid to people holding direct jobs.
