C H A M B E R S I G N AT U R E E V E N T S The Chamber’s signature events give many opportunities for networking, sponsorships, and simply growing your business. In late winter, we host our Annual Networking Dinner/Oyster Roast. This evening is a celebration of our dedicated members. In April, we host our two-day Business Growth & Development Series. The first day’s topic is Employee Enrichment – Winning With People, which outlines strategies to “Win and Grow with People” as you make your growth and development a priority. You will learn practical methods and tools to implement, to help you succeed in work, in life and to help your organization. The next day’s topic, The Basics of Modern Business, covers growth. Fountain Inn is growing, and the Chamber is passionate about equipping new and already established businesses and their owners to grow and be successful. This day will be packed with valuable information from local business leaders that will provide you with ideas and strategies to help your business move to the next level. In May, we present Taste INN, a community dinner down Main Street. This event highlights the restaurants/food trucks in Fountain Inn. It

8

is an evening to enjoy a taste of what we have to offer and enjoy walking our beautiful Main Street. We also host a Job Fair in May in partnership with the Simpsonville Chamber of Commerce and The Center For Community Services. This event helps our local business community find the right employees that fits their company. In September, we will host the Sporting Clay Fundraising Tournament at The Clinton House. The first Saturday in October features The Aunt Het Fall Festival, which recently celebrated 36 years in Fountain Inn. This day is full of arts & craft vendors, live music, food trucks, soap box derby, classic car show, amusement rides and other activities. In December, our Annual Christmas Parade makes its way down the evening-lit Main Street. The parade kicks off Christmas in Fountain Inn and is followed by weeks of holiday fun including carriage rides, Gingerbread contests and visits with Santa. Our Chamber loves helping those in need. From October until February, we are the

official drop off location for One Warm Coat, a national organization that collects slightly new and new clothing for men, women and children. All the clothing donations remain in our community. We host a monthly Woman @ Work networking breakfast on the fourth Tuesday of every month. They are sponsored by a Chamber member and highlight a community project or charity that we can donate to. It is a great way to come together to network as well as give back to our community. You don’t have to be a member to attend these meetings.

LEADERSHIP GOLDEN STRIP

LGS Class raises $130,000 to build Splash Pad in the Golden Strip The Simpsonville Area and Fountain Inn Chambers of Commerce partnered in 2019 to host the inaugural class of Leadership Golden Strip, a leadership development program for local business people in the Golden Strip area. The two Chambers will now welcome the Greater Mauldin Chamber of Commerce into the partnership to host Class 2. Leadership Golden Strip is a 10-month program for professionals with the desire and ability to shape the future of our vibrant communities. Through face-to-face meetings with regional leaders and on-site visits with local agencies and businesses, participants will explore the major issues and unique challenges facing the Golden Strip area. “We are thrilled for this opportunity to collaborate with our neighboring Chamber, and to offer a robust leadership development option for members of our community,” said Simpsonville Area Chamber President Allison McGarity. The Simpsonville Area Chamber has a strong history of developing community leaders by providing its own Leadership Simpsonville program, which was incorporated into the leadership program. Members of Class 1 completed a rigorous application process, upheld the program’s strict attendance policy and met all program requirements in order to graduate. Most notably, the class worked together to raise more than $130,000 to design and install a brand new splash pad in the heart of Fountain Inn. Many

local businesses supported the effort, with Greenville Water as the Diamond Sponsor. The Splash Pad opened in August and is free for the community to enjoy. “I could not be more proud of this first Leadership class and the hard work they put into this project so that we could make this incredible donation to The City of Fountain Inn, and most importantly, attract more visitors to our thriving town!” said Fountain Inn Chamber President Whitney D. Ferguson. Leadership Golden Strip is a dynamic program that supports the development of corporate and community leaders by introducing them to the various aspects of developing and maintaining a vibrant community, helping them to establish dialogue with fellow community leaders and facilitating their contributions to the betterment of the community. Leadership Golden Strip fuels a constant network of informed and communityminded leaders who will go on to work for our local businesses, start their own ventures, serve in

public offices and continue to give back to those around them. The program begins with a formal orientation session and continues with monthly sessions that cover topics such as local and state government, education, arts and history and infrastructure. Each session includes facility tours, expert presentations and one-on-one meetings with aspirational community leaders. As the business community continues to grow, McGarity is excited about the future of the partnership with the Fountain Inn and Mauldin Chambers. “We are constantly looking for strategies to shake things up and increase the value that our Chamber provides for the business community here in Simpsonville,” she said. “Leadership Golden Strip is one of our pillar programs which upholds the Chamber’s mission statement. We are very proud of our graduates and excited for what is to come.” Find project updates, applicant information, and more by visiting Facebook.com/ LeadershipGS. DIRECTORY & NEWCOMERS GUIDE

M AY O R ’ S W E L C O M E Welcome to Fountain Inn! For over 130 years, this community has thrived thanks to our residents, our city staff and our business community. Between our historic Main Street filled with unique shops and restaurants, our diverse small businesses throughout our community, along with our industrial neighbors, our businesses provide an immensely strong backbone to our local economy. GP McLeer Whether you’ve just moved here, opened Mayor your business here or are already involved in City of our Chamber, thank you for being a part of our Fountain Inn community’s story! The Chamber plays a critical role in shaping our community. We rely on the leadership of the Chamber’s members and staff to help inform our work as we continue to strive to meet the needs of our businesses. Fountain Inn’s location in southern Greenville County and northern Laurens County makes our city the perfect location for those looking to live in a small town, but still have easy access to all that our part of the state has to offer. Our businesses, from small stores to large manufacturers, provide stable employment opportunities, while our housing market makes it possible for families to have a wonderful place to come home to after work or school. Speaking of school, the brand new Fountain Inn High School is set to open in 2021, providing our town with the first new high school in Greenville County in over three decades. Our parks continue to provide wide open spaces for families to gather and our recreation teams to compete. All of this, plus consistent

ratings as one of the safest cities in the state, make Fountain Inn the perfect place to raise a family and start a business. Our community is buzzing throughout the year with activity, and I hope you will be able to experience some, or all, of it at some point. Our summer concert series, Dancin’ On Depot, occurs every Friday, and our Farmers Market is open on Saturday mornings during the summer. You can stop by our brand new Splash Pad on Main during the warmer months with the kids, or take the whole family to one of our great parks. In the fall, between the Chamber’s Aunt Het Festival and our community Halloween events, you’ll have lots of opportunities to see your neighbors, meet new folks, and frequent our local shops. Christmas is a special time in our town, with our “Christmas INN Our Town” festival, you can take a quaint horse-drawn carriage ride through the city, take a photo with Santa, and do a little (or a lot!) of shopping. I hope that you take every opportunity to enjoy all that our community has to offer, and that you will consider becoming a member of our Chamber of Commerce to support the great work of our business community.

At Fletcher Funeral and Cremation Services, we take pride in doing our absolute best to ensure your needs are met. We proudly serve Fountain Inn, South Carolina and all of our surrounding communities. 1218 N. BUSINESS

Former textile town prospers with a booming auto industry When Fountain Inn was officially incorporated as a South Carolina city on Christmas Eve 1886, its economy centered largely on farming and textile mills. But as the American textile industry dried up, a variety of other manufacturers have moved in to replace those. Many have to do with the auto industry, in part because BMW has opened a massive auto assembly plant in nearby Spartanburg County. That was followed by a Michelin tire factory. And in 2012, the German firm ZF Friedrichshafen opened a 975,000-square-foot plant with more than 1,000 employees to make eight- and nine-speed automatic transmissions in Gray Court, just five miles from Fountain Inn. Located in the fast-growing Golden Strip along Interstate 385 through northwestern South Carolina, Fountain Inn is just 15 miles from Greenville via that superhighway and less than a half-hour from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. It’s just a 90-minute drive along interstates from Columbia and about a two-hours drive along Interstate 85 from both Charlotte and Atlanta. Fountain Inn’s industrial park also offers rail service. The Greenlink Transit bus service reaches from downtown Greenville to the outskirts of Fountain Inn, and talks are underway to extend that service to Fountain Inn proper. Michigan-based Tower International opened a $75 million, 264,000-square-foot production facility in Fountain Inn in June 2017. The plant builds metal components and assemblies for BMW. “We have a whole new category, a whole new type of work – highly Assisted Living Facility License: CRC-1321

skilled, highly specialized, based on brainpower,” South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said when Tower held its grand opening. Yanfeng Automotive Interiors, the world’s largest supplier of automotive interior components, recently established a 365,000-squarefoot Fountain Inn plant that it acquired from Faurecia SA. Yanfeng then spent $70 million to expand the factory by 100,000 square feet, adding 35 new jobs. Bosch Rexroth has operated a hydraulics production plant in Fountain Inn since 1989. Beginning in 2013, the company invested $80 million in a five-year project to expand its production and convert an existing 260,000-square-foot industrial warehouse into a modern manufacturing and assembly plant. The facility now encompasses more than 100 acres of land and employs 700 people. Caterpillar operates a manufacturing logistics plant in Fountain Inn while AVX Corp. manufactures electronic components. Other major companies that have committed to Fountain Inn and the adjoining Golden Strip include W.W. Grainger and Emitec Inc. One of the newest, Lowe’s Foods, opened about five miles away in Simpsonville in 2017. GROWING POPULATION Whether they go to work in one of those local industries or find employment 20 minutes away in bustling Greenville, newcomers find Fountain Inn to be a convenient, affordable and family-friendly place to call home. “People want to live in Greenville County, but our housing is a little more affordable than the downtown area of the county,” Tolbert said. Fountain Inn has been sustaining a steady growth in population, from the official census figure of 6,000 at the turn of the century to 7,799 a decade later to more than 10,000 in 2019. Most Fountain Inn residents still live in single-family homes. But a supply of 350 market-rate apartment units recently was reinforced by a new 396-unit market-rate apartment project. Median household income is a healthy $52,000 a year. MAJOR EMPLOYERS Greenville County Schools

SHOPPING AND DINING Endearing Main Street “sells the town” with boutiques, food and fun Fountain Inn residents have easy access to the big-city attractions of nearby Greenville. But many of the thousands who decide to make Fountain Inn their new home do so because it still hangs on to the family-friendly feel of a small Southern town. And that includes a wide array of shopping and dining, with a special emphasis on boutique stores. “Our Main Street sells the town,” said Whitney Ferguson, a lifelong resident who has become president and CEO of the Fountain Inn Chamber of Commerce. “Whether you’re planning to relocate or start a new business, you’ll fall in love with our city’s charming history and warm hospitality!” Though Fountain Inn itself consists of a homey 10,000 people, the Greenville metro area is home to more than 500,000. That makes it the third-largest and fastest-growing urban area in South Carolina. Many small towns and suburbs have struggled to keep their central business districts alive in the 21st century. And just a little over a decade ago that was the case with Fountain Inn. But an ambitious revitalization project put into place in 2006 has turned what used to be a greaterthan-50% vacancy rate into a 90 to 95% occupancy rate. A Streetscape Beautification Project widened sidewalks, added landscaping and increased parking. The former Fountain Inn High School building was converted into the Younts Center for Performing Arts, with a 418-seat auditorium. SHOPPING Many of the new businesses have brought a boutique theme to Main Street: The Black Tulip, opened in 2015, is a lifestyle boutique with women’s apparel and home decor. I Declare! stocks gifts, home accessories and jewelry. Inn Season offers floral arrangements, interior design and home decor. Lilies on Main has floral arrangements for any occasion that can be ordered online. The Southern Sisters Boutique, run by sisters Danielle and Mary, offers women’s clothing, pressed-flower jewelry made by one of the sisters, jewelry, accessories and gifts. Unique Creations Upstate, featuring unusual art, antiques and vintage gifts. The Sock Ministry, with men’s apparel, accessories and personal styling. EATING, DRINKING AND FUN Six fast-food eateries and more than a dozen sitdown restaurants include: Bucky’s Bar-B-Q serves pork, ribs and chicken hot out of the pit and known for wood-smoked flavor.

Georgia Street Cafe offers traditional Southern fare for breakfast and lunch, including a super-hash-brown meal it calls “Trash Browns.” The Growler Haus is the city’s first craft-beer store, with more than 30 brands on tap. J Peters Bar and Grill gets high marks from guests and is praised for its convenient downtown location. Orion’s Bar and Grill, known for its “happy hour,” boasts that it provides “out of this world good and a stellar atmosphere.” Steam Coffee & Cream, a new coffee shop on Main Street. Touching our past “A people without knowledge of their history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.” – Marcus Garvey The goal of the Fountain Inn Museum is to provide all visitors, especially young people, with a clear view of our town’s fascinating past, from its humble beginnings and dynamic growth that led to the futuristic prospects now within sight. A secure footing in our history will enable tomorrow’s leaders to take on the unique challenges of the 21st century. The museum opened its doors in 2010, part of Fountain Inn’s Commerce Park project in downtown renewal. From the beginning, the aim was to accurately chronicle the town’s inception as a way station on the Charleston/ North Carolina stagecoach route, and mark its progress from a mostly farming population to the high tech and manufacturing concerns that dot its landscape today. An appreciation of Fountain Inn’s history includes exhibits reflecting the time when native Americans inhabited the upstate, grew

corn and hunted the game that was plentiful in the Piedmont. As European settlers began to arrive, roads and buildings soon followed, establishing communities that grew into towns such as Fountain Inn. Museum exhibits and handson displays take visitors on a chronological tour of our city’s growth, clearly illustrating the special Fountain Inn heritage. The museum offers innovative programs and tours for student groups from elementary school through high school. Special events and varying presentations provide great interest even for repeat guests. The Hooked on History series features programs such as Civil War stories that involved Fountain Inn citizen/soldiers; folk music of the textile belt with live performances; and An Evening with Robert Quillen, the internationally recognized author and publisher of The Fountain Inn Tribune. Favorite son “Peg Leg” Bates crafted an incredible career as a one-legged dancer and,

as his special exhibit confirms, performed for millions. You can even see the wooden leg that transported him from humble beginnings to the heights of show business. Make the museum part of your itinerary as you experience the exceptional aura of downtown Fountain Inn. The welcome mat is out – stop by to learn more about Fountain View’s origin, local history and culture. Want a preview? Go to FountainInnMuseum.org.

EXCEL ACADEMY EXCEL ACADEMY 50 Railroad St., Fountain Inn Excel Academy is Fountain Inn’s newest early childhood education center scheduled to open in 2020 in downtown Fountain Inn. Excel Academy is located behind the Younts Center for Performing Arts in what was originally part of the old Fountain Inn Elementary School. Excel Academy will offer childcare for ages 6 months to 4 years. Excel Academy is owned by Spike and Amanda Reid, who also own Spike’s After School in Fountain Inn. Spike’s After School was a unique concept of Spike, a former Fountain Inn Police Officer. Spike’s has been operating for 15 years and the Reid family hope to pair Excel Academy with the Spike’s brand and provide parents of the Fountain Inn area all their child care needs. The goal for Excel Academy is to be a Christian institution with a balance of education and social skill sets. The Reids have hired former, longtime Classy Kids director Dawn Hamilton (wife of FIPD Chief Mike Hamilton) as director of Excel Academy. She brings over 22 years of child care experience to the new facility. The vision for Excel is to be a hometown child care facility that embraces the closeness and warmth that comes with that small-town feel. Excel hopes to utilize its unique location to create experiences for its children to learn and grow through the wide range of opportunities that will be close by, even within walking distance. The county library is just steps away from Excel’s doors and the Younts Center is a resource that can provide artistic opportunities from singing and art to theater and dance. Downtown Fountain Inn, with its water fountains, new splash pad and police and fire departments offer the perfect local field trips and learning opportunities. The Reids are even excited to have train tracks across the street and cannot wait for the conductor to wave at the kids on the

playground as the train passes by! With the vision of the Reids and the leadership and experience of Hamilton, Excel Academy hopes to be another reason that makes the Fountain Inn community such a warm and special place to call home.

PA R K S A N D R E C R E AT I O N Fountain Inn Recreation Department & the Activities Center is about creating community through People, Parks, and Programs. Youth sports remain an important part of the city’s recreation offerings: Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Tackle & Flag Football and Volleyball are offered each season. The popularity of youth sports has resulted in expanded programs, as well as an adult softball league, that on average hosts upwards of 18 teams. The Activities Center provides a multi-purpose facility for people of all ages, with a full-court gymnasium, fitness center and meeting space. Senior activities are free of charge to those ages 55 and over, and include exercise classes, walking, health screenings and educational workshops, crafts and special interest groups. The Parks and Recreation department also sponsors several community events throughout the year: The annual Soap Box Derby Race on Aunt Het and a 1-Mile Kids Run/5K Rudolph Run in December, and a city and communitywide Veterans Day ceremony. The department manages nearly 50 acres of public parks, exceeding the national average for towns of this size. Seven parks offer residents a place to play, relax and exercise: Georgia Street Park, Country Chase Fitness Park, Country Gardens Greenway, Fairview Street Park, Sanctified Hill Park, PD Terry City Park and the newly reconstructed Emanuel Sullivan Sports Complex (formerly known as Woodside Park). The renovations at Emanuel Sullivan Sports Complex include three baseball/softball fields, playground, Miracle League field, multi-purpose field, press box, restrooms and concession areas. The new park will open March 2020. As Fountain Inn continues to grow, the parks and recreation department is looking forward to meeting the needs and goals of the community through expanding and upgrading all facilities in years to come. C U LT U R A L A R T S The Younts Center for Performing Arts presents a variety of performances each season, including community theater, chorale and symphony performances. In addition, it offers education and outreach for residents and visitors of all ages. In 2017, the Cultural Arts Foundation Fountain Inn acquired the Younts Center from the city and opened its first season there in September of that year. Executive Director Debbie Alphin and an outstanding staff of talented theater directors, actors, singers and professional administrative staff have worked tirelessly to bring unique and entertaining performances to the Younts Center. And with the support of volunteers and the community, the past three years have been an outstanding success. Notable 2018 performances include the musical comedy “Nunsense” and an original musical revue, “Groovin,” showcasing great hits of the 1950s-70s. Both shows were nominated for local theater awards and the buzz has continued to grow with the Center’s enchanting production of “Disney’s The Little Mermaid,” and a spectacular performance “Christmas Cabaret.” The 2019 season included a phenomenal performance of “Hunchback of Notre Dame,” the soulful musical revue of “Motown Magic,” the enchanting performance of “Matilda” and ended with the sounds of the season in “A Carolina Christmas.” It was a magical year for the talented performers, directors, choreographers, set crews, costuming members and the Younts Center staff. The Younts Center continues to host regional and national entertainment such as “The Drifters,” Rick Alviti’s Tribute to Elvis, 7 Bridges: The

Ultimate Eagles Experience and Diane Bailey’s tribute to Patsy Cline. The Gospel Series has brought national acts to sold-out audiences. The Kingsman, the Isaacs, the Booth Brothers, The Whisnuts and The Ball Brothers all graced the stage in past performances. The Younts Center opened its 2020 concert series with Departure, one of the most popular Journey tribute bands. The Kingsman open the Gospel Series in February, and a full lineup of performers such as Rick Alviti and The Glenn Miller Orchestra will also take the stage. In addition to shows and performances, the Younts Center also offer several facility rentals, including the theater stage, atrium, banquet hall, meeting and classroom facilities. The

Younts Theater seats 418 and is an excellent conference venue for various types of organizations and businesses. The Cultural Arts Foundation board and staff are committed to continuing this venture to provide one of the best entertainment venues in the Upstate and make the Younts Center for Performing Arts the “Inn” place to be for performing arts. The Cultural Arts Foundation is a nonprofit organization that depends on community involvement and support to keep the Younts Center moving forward. For more information and a list of upcoming shows and events, visit www.yountscenter.org.
