eneva is a community that takes pride in its reputation of creating events that have run continuously over the last six decades. Our Swedish Days Festival, Geneva Arts Fair, Festival of the Vine and Christmas Walk and House Tour at Christmas are a few of the many events that make our town a real “Picture Postcard.”

es, laugh and enjoy the feeling that occurs when neighbor welcomes neighbor. Ruth Reichl, a food editor, says: “Pull up a chair. Take a taste. Come join us. Life is so endlessly delicious.” Our Geneva Chamber of Commerce members try to share, each in a unique way, the wonderful nature of the “deliciousness” of spending time in downtown Geneva. We are proud of our city staff, our police department, our fire department, our local officials and our downtown merchants and eating venues. Our tapestry, Geneva, consists of a blending of vibrant experiences into a destination city in which all can enjoy friendship, laughter and the “delicious” nature of family life.

The events themselves have matured over time and are continually updated to adapt to a changing community and a changing audience. The one element that doesn’t change however, is the way all our events continue to bring people together to share experienc-

Visitors and residents can take advantage of our Geneva Visitor Center, located below our office on Third Street. Questions on what to do, where to eat, stay and shop can quickly be answered by our staff.

ince 1922, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce has acted as a catalyst for positive and progressive growth in the community. A nonprofit organization, the Chamber fosters quality business practices, community involvement and a diversity of educational, cultural and entrepreneurial opportunities. Under the leadership of the board of directors, the full-time Chamber staff administers the day-to-day operations. The organization benefits from a successful partnership with the City of Geneva. The two entities work closely together to promote the community, its traditions and the seasonal events that generate tax revenue, create jobs and showcase the historic downtown.

Noted for its exceptional festivals and events, the community boasts four major festivals that have enjoyed a time-honored history of quality entertainment and high attendance. The Geneva Chamber of Commerce recently celebrated the 67th Swedish Days Festival, the 15th Geneva Arts Fair, the 35th Festival of the Vine and the 59th Christmas Walk and House Tour. The Chamber also coordinates the January Restaurant Week and April City-Wide Geneva Garage Sale.

The Geneva Chamber of Commerce membership consists of over 500 businesses, industries, professionals, organizations and individuals that support economic and community development. The Chamber provides services to its members as well as to the overall business sector, the residents of the Fox Valley area and the visitors to the community. Members benefit from referrals, networking events, seminars and public relations coverage. The entire entrepreneurial community profits from the healthy business climate cultivated in part by the Chamber’s efforts. Residents of and visitors to the Fox River Valley enjoy the advantages of an area rich in opportunities, activities and appeal.

Mayor’s Welcome

ear Friends, Nine score and two years ago the City of Geneva was born. Throughout our 182 years, we have evolved, assimilated, endured and built a reputation as a community that remains in-touch with the history that helped define us. We also remain in-tune with the future that awaits us. Geneva’s success – its very brand – is often imitated but seldom duplicated. Our brand includes our government partners who provide excellent schools, highly regarded parks and recreation programs and an innovative and responsive library district. Geneva’s success also features residents of all ages engaged in civic and philanthropic affairs, industry partners that are market leaders, a healthy and diverse downtown business district and our physical environment.

GENEVA COMMUNITY PROFILE

ILGENCW17 design.indd 10

All those characteristics combined make our city the picture-perfect canvas to live, learn, work, play and raise a family. More than 200,000 visitors come to Geneva every year to experience our hospitality and warm welcome. Thanks to all Geneva has to offer, people return time and again for another dose of the Geneva brand, the same brand you helped make possible. My best, Kevin Burns Mayor City of Geneva

he quaint city of Geneva is a growing Chicago suburb offering the best of both worlds: A deep appreciation for its rich past and an enthusiastic outlook for its promising future. Today, Geneva is home to approximately 22,000 residents and welcomes thousands of visitors annually who take pleasure in its distinctive hometown atmosphere. With its location along the scenic Fox River, Geneva benefits from a beautiful backdrop for its charming shopping district, year-round festivals and a myriad of recreational opportunities. Geneva’s storied past begins with the arrival of its first settler, Daniel Shaw Haight, in the early 1830s. After building a cabin along the Fox River, he chose to relocate and sold his land to James and Charity Herrington in 1835. By 1836, the town was selected as the site of the new county seat. Early names of the settlement included “Big Spring,” “Herrington’s Ford” and “La Fox.” Ultimately, the town was christened “Geneva” – a name that was adopted from a city in upstate New York. The suggestion most likely came from Dr. Charles Volney Dyer, a Chicago resident and noted abolitionist who had recently traveled to New York. James Herrington proved to be an influential person in the establishment of Geneva. Prior to his untimely death in 1839 at the age of 41, Herrington platted the new town, served as sheriff and established the first post office, tavern and general store.

The Geneva of today has preserved its charming historic essence, distinguished by peaceful tree-lined streets with many well-maintained homes from the mid- to late19th Century. While this unique historical character remains intact, Geneva has experienced thoughtful development with the incorporation of superior educational and health care resources, vibrant arts and cultural offerings and a dynamic business climate.

The advent of the railroad in 1853 was an important development in Geneva’s history, placing the town on a main line offering both commuter and freight rail service. Along with the railroad came a surge of Swedish immigrants who helped construct the railroad and many chose to stay in the fledgling town. Geneva was officially incorporated as a village in 1858, followed by incorporation as a city in 1887.

eneva, the designated seat of Kane County, enjoys an ideal suburban location along the great Fox River, approximately 45 miles west of Chicago. Local travel is convenient via several main thoroughfares. Highways 25 and 31 offer a direct connection to the neighboring cities of St. Charles to the north and Batavia to the south. State Street (IL Route 38) winds its way through Geneva, providing an efficient route to Chicago and those cities lying to the east and west. In addition, Geneva’s location within the Chicago area offers easy access to Interstates 88 and 90 that in turn, link commuters to Interstates 290, 294 and 355.

These major roadways, coupled with passenger service, make Geneva a prime location for commuters and businesses. Geneva is served by the Metra Union Pacific/West Line, a commuter train offering transportation to Chicago’s Ogilvie Transportation Center and to the many communities located along the route.

Commercial air travel is accessible within a one-hour’s drive of Geneva. Chicago’s O’Hare International and Midway International airports offer hundreds of daily flights to destinations across the globe. Victorian homes-turned-businesses in the downtown historic district serve as a picturesque backdrop for the show. September’s Festival of the Vine is a three-day event comprised of food, wine, seminars and events, a flower market, a craft show and carriage rides. The Flavor Fare features Geneva restaurants, plus musical entertainment. The Christmas Walk in December is complete with visits from Santa Lucia (Sweden’s symbol of the season) and Santa Claus, the melodic voices of carolers, the inviting aroma of roasted chestnuts and an old-fashioned candy cane pull. Residential Living

eneva is a place where old meets new – a trait that is evident in its residential living options. Impressive century-old Victorian manors line the streets of historic downtown Geneva, offering a glimpse into the community’s rich past. A wide assortment of home styles can be found along the banks of the Fox River and throughout the downtown area. Large estates, post-war bungalows, remodeled farmhouses and 1950s-era ranch dwellings, as well as modern homes, condominiums and townhouse complexes, combine to make Geneva’s landscape an eclectic mix of design elements. High-quality living, overlooking the greens, in Eagle Brook and Mill Creek, has made these top choices for families, retirees and golf enthusiasts. Those who are looking for senior living or assisted care facilities will find an array of choices in Geneva and in the neighboring communities of Batavia and St. Charles. These facilities provide a full continuum of care to residents – from independent living and assisted living to skilled nursing, hospice and Alzheimer’s care. Arden Courts Memory Care Community, Autumn Leaves – A Memory Care Residence, Bria Health Services of Geneva, Delnor Glen Senior Living, Geneva Place – A Covenant Retirement Community, GreenFields of Geneva, The Holmstad, The Reserve of Geneva and Wedgewood Manor are among the exceptional senior living com-

munities located within the region. Geneva Township Senior Center also offers services to the senior population. Whether it is the radiating hometown spirit, successful business district, exceptional schools, outstanding cultural and recreational opportunities or the countless other elements that compose this charming town; people are continually looking to Geneva as an attractive community in which to live.

eneva’s location along the 33-mile Fox River Trail offers easy access for bikers, hikers, joggers and cross-country skiers. Destinations reachable via this smooth-surface trail include the Tekakwitha Woods Forest Preserve and Nature Center, the Fabyan Forest Preserve, the Villa Museum and the Japanese Garden. Outdoor enthusiasts can also take advantage of the 17-mile Great Western Trail and the 12-mile Virgil L. Gilman Nature Trail. Each of these trails is open year-round and provides visitors with the opportunity to view wildlife and native plant life throughout the changing seasons.

The Geneva Park District has been a staple of the community for more than 60 years, evolving from an organization of four parks into one of 50 parks totaling more than 700 acres. Additionally, more than 40,000 toddlers, youths and adults participate in over 3,000 programs each year through the park district. Included in the seasonal offerings are programs for all age groups that include fitness, gymnastics, dance, nature education, arts and crafts, martial arts, special events, athletics, summer camps and senior activities and trips. The Sunset Racquetball & Fitness Center and Stephen D. Persinger Recreation Center offer fitness centers, aerobic and dance studios and multi-purpose rooms. Additionally, the recreation center also features an indoor track and two full-court gymnasiums. Sunset Pool, Mill Creek Pool, Stone Creek Miniature Golf Course, The Links Disc Golf Course and Peck Farm Park are among the district’s other popular facilities. Peck Farm Park is 385-acre park that includes trails for hiking and biking, a sensory garden, a 19-acre lake and a butterfly house open

in summer. Peck Farm Park is a leader in providing environmental education offering a wide variety of events such as camps, field trips, family and adult programs to increase awareness of conservation and the importance of protecting our green space.

Also on the grounds, the 1869 Peck House features a discovery room and a history gallery with a 10-minute movie and interactive exhibits about the history of the Peck family. A silo has been converted into an observation tower that offers commanding views of the park. Hawks Hollow, a unique environmental educational playground invites children and families to explore, touch, climb, learn and play using their imaginations while experiencing the smells, textures and wonders of the natural world. Peck Farm Park is a unique park found in an urban environment that offers residents and visitors a place to slow down and enjoy quality time surrounded by nature. Mill Creek Golf Club, Eagle Brook Country Club and Geneva Golf Club each provide the setting for an enjoyable day on the greens regardless of skill level. Golfers can also take advantage of nearby courses including West Chicago’s Prairie Landing and St. Charles’ Royal Hawk Country Club. The Fox Valley Ice Arena and Fitness Center is one of the premier family ice sports complexes in the Greater Chicagoland Area featuring one NHL Rink, one International Rink and a fitness center providing health, fitness and now medical services all in one location. Education

eneva Community Unit School District 304 continues to build on its “Tradition of Excellence” to prepare its nearly 6,000 students for success in a constantly changing and increasingly globalized world. Collaboration among its 10 schools – one preschool, one high school, two middle schools, and six neighborhood elementary schools – helps students reach the district’s vision of developing self-directed, lifelong learners; effective communicators; complex, creative and adaptive thinkers; and collaborative and productive citizens. In Geneva 304, staff and students are empowered to challenge themselves, take risks and learn and grow from their failures. Geneva School District’s test scores continually outpace state averages and its success is directly reflected in the accomplishments and awards achieved each year by students and faculty. Caring commitment and support for each student’s academic and social-emotional needs are a major part of Geneva 304. In 2016, Geneva School District was ranked the 12th Best School District in Illinois by Niche, placing it in the top three percent of districts in the country. In addition to its academic success, Geneva 304 students continuously excel in athletics, music, theater and a host of other extracurricular activities. In 2012, Geneva was recognized by Bloomberg’s Businessweek as “The Best Place to Raise Kids in Illinois” in large part due to public school performance. Alternatives to public education are readily available for Geneva students. St. Peter Elementary School (pre-K-8) and Mansio Montessori of Geneva are among the private or parochial schools that serve the area. The community of Geneva is also well served by a number of excellent day care and early childhood education centers. Graduating seniors and adults looking to continue their education are afforded several options within a 30-mile range of Geneva. Nearby Sugar Grove is home to the main campus of Waubonsee Community College (WCC). WCC offers students a wide selection of two-year transfer and

career education degree programs, along with numerous one-semester certificate programs. WCC also provides Adult Education and Community Education programs, plus a range of Workforce Development offerings. Further higher learning opportunities are available at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, the Northern Illinois University campus in DeKalb and the private, liberal arts institutions of Wheaton College, North Central College in Naperville, Aurora University and Benedictine University in Lisle. Geneva Public Library District is a tremendous resource for all ages and stages of life, connecting the community to discover, inspire, and grow. The library serves more than 30,500 residents of Geneva and the surrounding area. Supplementing the library’s robust collection of books, CDs, DVDs and digital material (eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMusic, etc.) is an assortment of exceptional programs for adults, children and teens offered throughout the year. Additional resources include tablets and digitizing equipment available to use in the library or to check out. The online catalog offers homework help for kids of all ages, as well as hundreds of other resources for research, lifelong learning, job finding and more. Government

T

he forward-thinking City of Geneva operates under a mayor-council form of government composed of a mayor and 10 aldermen representing five wards. The City Council meets the first and third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. in order to discuss matters of business and policy concerning the community. The Committee of the Whole meets the second and fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m.

The community works closely with local government in order to enhance the quality of life enjoyed in Geneva. Citizen participation is highly encouraged at the monthly City Council meetings and through nearly a dozen city boards, committees and commissions that cover various initiatives such as cultural arts, beautification and historic preservation. Community safety and prevention is safeguarded by both the Geneva Police Department and the Geneva Fire Department. Thirty-six dedicated, professional, compassionate sworn officers comprise the Geneva Police Department, as well as 13 equally dedicated, professional and compassionate civilian employees. In addition to crime prevention, the department offers a number of community programs and educational services including Internet Safety and Crime Prevention Programs, Operation Senior Care, Drug/Medication Collection Program, Kane County Safe Kids, their child ID program and many programs in cooperation with the Geneva schools.

G

The Geneva Fire Department, formed in 1895, originally consisted of 14 members. Today, that number has increased to more than 60 members with three administrators, 20 full-time and 46 paid-on call firefighters. The department provides a wide array of emergency and non-emergency services to the community that include fire suppression, paramedic-based emergency medical care and transport, hazardous material assessment/mitigation, technical rescue response, life safety education programs that target grade school children and senior residents of the community, fire code enforcement and CPR classes, as well as home and business safety inspections.

Worship & Service Organizations

eneva is a city that embraces its diversity – a characteristic that is evident in its strong spiritual sector. More than a dozen houses of worship represent an array of denominations in Geneva. Many of these structures were built in the 1800s offering worshipers of today a peephole to the past. The remarkable architecture of the early churches adds considerably to the historic charm of this lovely riverfront community.

Moving Ahead with a Sense of History ILGENCW17 design.indd 27

In addition to the programs and services offered through the area’s churches, Geneva is home to numerous branches of wellknown and local organizations. These nonprofit organizations have significantly impacted the community through fundraisers, volunteer opportunities and legislative advocacy as well as by offering access to important resources and information for Geneva residents and businesses.
