GREEN OAKS Green Oaks is a small community that offers quiet country living, excellent schools, single-family homes on large lots and access to major highways. Green Oaks was founded in 1960 as a municipal barrier to intense urban and industrial expansion in neighboring areas, according to the village website. From the beginning, village ordinance has provided for a pattern of one-, two- and five-acre lot residential zoning and strict standards over environmentally sensitive lands. In fact, the community’s dedication to low growth and protecting “the opportunity to live in an open countryside environment” is even spelled out in its planning commission’s policies. While it was unincorporated until 1960, the Green Oaks area had residents much earlier. Irish immigrants braved the dense forests, swamps, poor clay soil and wolves to move in during the 1840s. The first school in the area, Madden School, was built in 1850 and used until 1923 when the original Oak Grove School replaced it. Today Green Oaks has 3,863 residents spread over 4.12 square miles along I-294. The areas of the village on the west side of the tollway are almost exclusively residential while the much smaller percentage of the community east of I-294 is largely reserved for office and industrial use as the village strives to raise sufficient tax money to defray the cost of village services. The village has recently added two large senior developments and one mixed-use retail center. Green Oaks Senior Living by Spectrum Development at Route 176 and I-94 and Sheridan of Green Oaks by Senior Lifestyles Development at Route 43 and Atkinson Road are both available for occupancy. Green Oaks Commons Retail Development, also at Route 43 and Atkinson Road, was completed in 2016. One additional retail building and two office buildings remain to be built. These developments will generate revenue to the tax-increment financing district, allowing for revitalization and development throughout the industrial and retail corridor of Route 176. Green Oaks is policed by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, and fire services are provided by Libertyville. Scavenger services are provided and each homeowner may choose their preferred level of service.

LIBERTYVILLE Libertyville’s history extends back to the 1830s, with incorporation in 1882. Bus i ne s s Profile s GEORGE GARNER CYCLERY George Garner Cyclery, 740 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville, is one of three George Garner Cyclery shops, located in Libertyville, Northbrook and Lake Zurich. Today they carry Trek and Electra bicycles, as well as cycling apparel, Bontrager accessories and parts and stationary exercise bicycles and trainers. George Garner is a family business with a storied history. George Garner Sr. left the Marines, following World War II, and in 1947 decided to open a bicycle shop in California’s San Fernando Valley. “Schwinn was so impressed that in 1964 they asked him to come to Chicago and consult with them on building their dealer network. They also wanted him to start and run a ‘concept store’ where they could take prospective dealers to see how a bicycle store should be run,” said George Garner Jr. “He found he liked Chicago – especially since he met my mother here – and decided to stay,” he added. Locally, the Garner family opened a second store in 1977 – in Libertyville – and a third store in Lake Zurich in 1980. You will no longer find Schwinn bicycles at George Garner Cyclery because, after some changes at Schwinn, Garner Sr. decided to part ways with the company and align his businesses with other companies that he saw as preeminent in the cycling industry. “What sets us apart is our dedication to customer service and a great

core group of employees,” Garner said. “My father founded the business on customer service and we still work very hard to make sure that all of our customers leave our stores happy.” BILL’S PIZZA AND PUB Bill’s Pizza and Pub at 624 S. Lake St. in Mundelein has a long and venerable history in Mundelein, serving generations of locals delicious pizza since 1957. Mary Ann Rouse took over the restaurant from her parents who started it all in a small take-out stand next door to the current Mundelein location. After 10 years, her dad was able to purchase a corner bar next door and he expanded there, making the family business a sit-down restaurant. Over the years he expanded the restaurant twice and gave it a Northwoods atmosphere – even adding a stone fireplace – in a nod to the pleasure he got from fishing in Canada. Bill’s Pizza Pub quickly became known for its delicious pizza, the free peanuts-in-the-shell that people are able to consume while waiting and the homey atmosphere offered both inside and on the dog-friendly patio. Soon after Mary Ann took over, she built a second, larger location in Third Lake with a similar personality. Today Mary Ann’s sons also work in the family business, so a third generation is involved. Bill’s Pizza serves thin crust pizza, as well as Bill’s unique creation – the double-decker thin crust pizza. It features two thin crust pizzas, stacked on top of one another and cooked together. It was Bill’s 1975 answer to competition from deep dish pizza purveyors and its uniqueness has caught the eye of Windy City Live, Good Morning America and other television programs over recent years.

COOK MEMORIAL PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT Cook Memorial Public Library District finishes off 2019 with a greatly expanded Aspen Drive Library, 701 Aspen Dr., Vernon Hills. One of its two full-service library locations, the second location is Cook Park Library, 413 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville. District residents may use either library. A Bookmobile further extends the library’s reach by making regular stops weekly in district neighborhoods, preschools, day care centers and senior centers; the library also delivers materials to homebound patrons. Together, they connect a diverse community of 60,000 residents – in Libertyville, Green Oaks, Mettawa, Indian Creek, most of Vernon Hills and eastern Mundelein – to resources and experiences that educate, enrich and inspire. Serving the southern part of the library’s district, Aspen Drive Library’s expansion has added much needed space for everyone. The children’s department has expanded seating and activities for children and families. Adults will appreciate the sunny, new quiet reading room with cozy fireplace, and additional study rooms provide more private space options for individuals or a group. All students will have a dedicated area to enjoy the library, including a new high school space. Creative types can enjoy the new Workshop for DIY projects; the enlarged digital studio now has a recording booth. Many of these features are already available at the Cook

Park Library, and now area residents can take advantage of them here as well. Extensive program variety at both libraries ensures there’s something for everyone. Computer basics, how to code, and how to convert photos, videos and 33” vinyl records to digital format are all offered in the Digital Studio. DIY projects for all ages come to life in the library’s workshop. Teen book groups, craft projects, after-hours programs and gaming events, are all happening at both locations. Typical programs for adults at both libraries feature book clubs, free movie matinées, concerts and cooking demos. A unique Authors Out Loud program features a free series of author visits and requires registration. Throughout the year, themed-bus tours let residents take in museums, Broadway shows and historical locations. The genealogy library staff offers guest genealogist visits, hosted writers and networking groups, an independent research lab and online resources. Both libraries also

offer a wide variety of programs for families and children from babies through grade 6, including early literacy story times, book discussion groups and hands-on craft and science activities. The eLibrary resource gives cardholders easy and free access to numerous electronic platforms, such as Flipster, RBdigital, Hoopla and Libby, for music, movies, books and audiobooks, comic books and magazines. The new PressReader database offers popular magazine and newspaper titles from different countries (and the US), in different languages, and in different interest categories. To satisfy the creative itch, CreativeBug offers thousands of online art and craft videos taught by experts. Re cre at ion LIBERTYVILLE RECREATION AND SPORT COMPLEX DEPARTMENT Unlike many municipalities that have separate park districts, the Village of Libertyville operates its parks, facilities and recreation programs through the Recreation & Sports Complex Department. “Our department takes great pride in providing quality programs, fun programs, and a diversity of special events for Libertyville residents, as well as non-residents,” said Conrad “Connie” Kowal, director of the Recreation-Sports Complex Department. Libertyville recreation amenities include 20 parks, swimming pools at Adler Park and Riverside Park, the Crawford House at Butler Lake Park and the Adler Park Lodge. Popular recreation programs for kids include preschool classes, dance programs, youth basketball leagues, youth indoor soccer leagues, swimming lessons and summer day camps. The Libertyville Sports Complex campus has become a popular destination for sports and special events. Its facilities include a Fitness Center and the signature LSC Indoor Events Center featuring two artificial turf fields for soccer, lacrosse, football, baseball and other sports, and eight surface courts for basketball, volleyball, field hockey, floor hockey and other sports. LSC also is home to the region’s tallest climbing mountain, and offers rooms that can be rented for parties, conferences and other events. LSC hosts a variety of sports and special events including major youth basketball tournaments, dog agility competitions, trade shows, school graduations and class reunions, family parties, bar/bat mitzvahs and unique events such as an international table tennis tournament. A variety of adult leagues for men and women include softball, indoor soccer, basketball, flag football and co-ed kickball. And indoor pickleball programs are offered five days a week. Special events hosted throughout the year include the Daddy-Daughter Valentine Dance in February, Lunch With The Bunny in the spring, a bike resale event in April, July 4 fireworks, Mom & Son Campfire Cookout in September, an indoor HalloweenFest in October, the Holiday Tree Lighting at Cook Park in November and Breakfast with Santa in December. MUNDELEIN PARK & RECREATION DISTRICT Established in 1954, the district has 33 park sites offering over 735 acres of open space, playgrounds, ballfields, lakes and trails as well as seven facilities. The district offers over 650 seasonal programs, including tennis and dance lessons, martial arts, softball and basketball leagues, swim instruction, art and music classes, health and wellness programs, culinary classes, adult day trips, science classes and day camps. In addition, the park district hosts over 20 annual events, many free to the public. In 2018, they launched Go Mundelein, a free walking club, that encourages health and exercise. The main hub, Mundelein Community Center, 1401 N. Midlothian Rd., is home to Big & Little Child Development Center, NovaCare Fitness Center and administrative offices. This year, NovaCare Rehabilitation, a physical therapy office, joined the community center and Park View Fitness was renamed the NovaCare Fitness Center. An onsite physical therapy clinic is another asset for patrons. NovaCare Fitness Center’s membership includes access to the newly renovated fitness floor, indoor pool, indoor track, open gym and unlimited group exercise classes. Personal trainers and child care are available for an additional fee. Free WiFi makes working out a more enjoyable experience. Mundelein Park & Recreation District offers both child care and preschool. Big & Little Child Development Centerat the Mundelein Community Center is a state-licensed child care facility for ages 2-6 years.
