A Message From The Directors
he timing for Gridiron 2020 couldn’t be better. For decades, the Gridiron has counted on alcohol alone to fuel audience reactions to the show. On January 1st, with the legalization of recreational cannabis in Illinois, there came a new dawn. Now, for the very first time, amongst the drunk and inebriated in our audience, are the stoned and lambasted. From our humble standpoint, this can mean only positive things for a musical sketch show written and performed by Lake County lawyers. Laughter is laughter as far as we’re concerned; the Gridiron doesn’t discriminate. The 2020 installment pays homage to Hollywood’s preoccupation of spoon-feeding our childhoods back to us. Capitalizing on nostalgia is the American Way. We patriotically accept the challenge of honoring our childhood
memories, including (but not limited to) mornings with Mr. Rogers, Saturday toy commercials, and professional wresting on Sunday afternoons. And of course, to compliment this walk down memory lane, we also offer a current satiric snapshot of Lake County’s modern legal world (sometimes a tad too close to reality). Join us in celebrating all the attorney “guardians” – public defenders, private practitioners, courtappointed investigators, and the like, not forgetting our prosecuting brothers and sisters – helping the helpless, defending the indefensible, each and every day. We once again extend our undying gratitude to our writers, actors, musicians, dance captain, costume maven, technical crew, playbill committee, and sponsors. Thank you for being our guardians, making us look better than we deserve, and supporting the best interests of Gridiron 2020. Now grab the intoxicant of your choosing, and enjoy the show!
A Message From The President
Y
ou might be wondering what role an LCBA President has in making a Gridiron show come off successfully. Or you might not be wondering that. But anyway.
At the party after our last show in February 2018, I cornered both directors, Stella and Craig, and made them double-pinky swear that they would again direct the 2020 show. Both said (and this is an honest-to-God true story) “yes, assuming I do not have a newborn baby.” I thereby exercised my authority as incoming
2019-2020 LCBA President to ban both directors from procreating until 2021. Stella became pregnant shortly thereafter; Craig impregnated his wife less than a year later. So much for the authority of an LCBA President. Given this fecund state of affairs, I had no choice but to assume guardianship of both Stella and Craig’s children, thus freeing them up to produce this year’s show and birthing our theme, so-to-speak. You’re welcome. Steve President; Guardian
