Chamber WELCOME

elcome residents and visitors to the eighth annual Village of Gurnee Community Guide. This guide is brought to you by The Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with Town Square Publications, a division of Daily Herald Media Group. A great deal of time and effort goes into this guide, and I want to especially thank our Chamber members, the Village of Gurnee staff and elected officials, as well as our schools, clubs and organizations that helped to pull all the content together. Most importantly, it could not be done without the efforts of the Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce board members. As you peruse the guide, please keep in mind we are open to suggestions for how we can better serve our Chamber members, residents and visitors referencing the guide. We encourage longtime residents and visitors alike to browse the guide to get updates on the village and its local businesses. In it you will find featured articles and advertisements from your local businesses. Use this guide as a handy reference to village and township services, schools, volunteer groups and organizations in and around Gurnee. Most importantly, pay special attention to the chamber members and advertisers that make Gurnee the great community that it is. Once you go through the guide, I am sure you will agree with me that Gurnee is a great place to live and do business. In this edition, we have expanded the Hometown Profiles feature from three Chamber member articles to four to further emphasize the Gurnee’s Got It theme. Take some time to read about these successful businesses that make Gurnee a great community to live and visit. Check out Excellence in Dentistry, Ltd., serving the community for 25 years, with Drs. Howard L. Cooper and Kate E. Limardi who specialize in comforting cowards of all ages. For one of Gurnee’s many places to eat, check out Momcorn with Sergio Rivera and Kathy Ross serving up authentic Mexican and Latin American foods since 2012. A long-term presence founded in Gurnee is Community Trust Credit Union, serving Gurnee and surrounding communities for 84 years. The credit union’s recently appointed CEO Mike Mallow is committed to continue its growth and community involvement. On the real estate scene, check out the article on James D. Smith, broker/associate with Re/Max Showcase and his thoughts on the current real estate market.

The Chamber website, www.gurneechamber.com, has been up for over a year now, and is still evolving. We advise residents and visitors to check it regularly for upcoming events and announcements from our members. A note to our members: Please check your listing on the Chamber website, and keep in mind we can link to your site (if provided the information). Also you can create login credentials to access your own listing on the Chamber site to add and update information. The more you use the website, the more we get upgraded on searches so all our members may get more exposure. Follow the Village of Gurnee Chamber on Facebook for updates on upcoming events by the Chamber, shared information on other village events and member news postings. Generally, something new is posted every day or two and as always, the more information our members provide, the more information we will make available to everyone. In closing, please remember the Chamber board is an all-volunteer group of dedicated individuals who devote as much time and effort as possible to encourage and promote business in Gurnee. To that end, we are always looking for ideas on how we can better serve the interests of our members, residents and visitors. Our organization is only as good as the participation and input we receive. Please feel free to drop us a line if you have an idea on potential events, programs or speakers. Your input is welcome and will be considered by the board. We are always in need of chairmen to assist the board in planning events, obtaining speakers and so on. If you are interested in getting involved, let us know. To my board, thank you all. It’s a pleasure to serve with you all. The meetings are well attended and the participation is incredible. Let’s continue to move forward. Sincerely,

Dan Kloczkowski

Mayor’s WELCOME

I

love Gurnee - it is a fabulous community to raise a family, work, shop or play! Some of my favorite things about Gurnee are the small town feel it has managed to maintain and our wonderful community events with something for everyone to enjoy. Part of the strength of our community is the strong relationship between the Village and our highly distinguished intergovernmental partners such as our school districts, Township, Library and Park District. By working together, we provide services that residents want without redundancy. For many of us, the Village of Gurnee is simply our home, and we often underestimate the amount of work it takes to keep Gurnee a wonderful community. While Gurnee has long enjoyed its strategic location and natural resources, it has been through the work of the Village employees, residents, business owners, intergovernmental partners and civic organizations that have made this community great. Gurnee was originally a farming community of less than 500 residents when it first became a Village in 1928. From these humble beginnings, it expanded rapidly with beautiful subdivisions and world-class attractions such as Six Flags Great America, Gurnee Mills Shopping Mall and Great Wolf Lodge (coming soon!). Gurnee, with the combined efforts of two generations worth of work, is now an outstanding place to live, work and play and one of the premier Chicagoland communities. No other community has the variety of recreational opportunities, public amenities and exceptional services that our Village does – all delivered in the most cost-effective manner possible, which allows the Village to operate without levying a property tax.

Preservation efforts are at the heart of many of our operations. Whether keeping our neighborhoods safe or ensuring that our roads are adequately maintained, the Village continues to excel. The Village is very cognizant of managing costs and tax dollars judiciously and introduced several new programs that will save our residents money or streamline operations the last few years. Our Police, Fire and Public Works Departments are at the forefront in their individual fields and have been repeatedly recognized for their excellence and quality of service. We continuously strive to advance our services in response to the needs of residents, visitors and businesses. This year, we developed a plan to provide dispatch services to nearby communities, approved incentive agreements for the attraction of Great Wolf Lodge and the renovation of parts of Gurnee Mills, and implemented new technology to improve efficiencies. If you want to stay connected we have multiple ways to keep you engaged through our website, e-Blasts, NextDoor, Facebook, Twitter and the traditional quarterly newsletter. Whether you are a resident, business owner, or visitor, there is much to be proud of in Gurnee. Please do not hesitate to contact the Village if you should ever need any assistance, and thank you to everyone who helps to keep our community great. Sincerely,

Kristina Kovarik

Chamber BENEFITS

he Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce was formed to be the unifying voice for businesses in Gurnee. Through the commitment and engagement of our members, the Chamber provides leadership for the benefit of the diverse business community by promoting economic growth, advocating the interests of business, providing service and education to members and community and meeting member’s needs. With the enhanced website, our strong community focus and close involvement with the Village of Gurnee, we will work on initiatives that will help members of our Chamber prosper. BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP Legislative advocacy

The Chamber is the “voice of business” ensuring that the needs of members and their views on important issues are communicated to local, state and national legislators. Advertising & marketing opportunities

10

One of the many ways the Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce helps business succeed is by providing numerous opportunities for our members to market to business and consumers alike. Professional development

Members can take part in several programs and seminars that allow them to grow and develop new skills. Networking

The opportunity to make acquaintances that can turn into business relationships is always a vital component of Chamber membership. How can my business play a leadership role in the Gurnee area’s economic, civic and social life?  Join the Village of Gurnee Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is the best way to continue building a strong business community that works together to achieve results.  Support Village of Gurnee Chamber Commerce members.

Do business with them when you need their products and services. Always “Think Gurnee Chamber First.”

 Participate in Chamber-sponsored events. These events build

a sense of community among businesses, residents and visitors. You can participate by:

 Giving financial support to Chamber programs

 Volunteering your time

The American Chamber of Commerce executives with support from Small Business Network, Inc., designed a study to determine the real value to companies in terms of consumer outcomes of joining and being active in their local chamber of commerce. Do consumers really support businesses because they are chamber members? A sampling of the results proves their case: Most consumers (59 percent) think being active in the local chamber of commerce is an effective business strategy overall. It is 29 percent more effective, however, for communicating to consumers that a company uses good business practices and 26 percent more effective for communicating that a business is reputable. If a company shows that it is highly involved in its local chamber (e.g., sits on the chamber board), consumers are 12 percent more likely to think that its products stack up better against its competition. When consumers thinks a company’s products stack up better against the competition because the company is highly involved in its local chamber of commerce, it is because they infer the company is trustworthy, involved in the community and is an industry leader. When consumers know that a restaurant franchise is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 40 percent more likely to eat at the franchise in the next few months. When consumers know that an insurance company is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 43 percent more likely to consider buying insurance from it. When consumers know that a small business is a member of the chamber of commerce, they are 44 percent more likely to think favorably of it and 63 percent more likely to purchase goods or services from the company in the future. MORE REASONS TO JOIN  Member-to-member discounts  Networking opportunities  Special events  Ribbon cuttings  Community guide

 Attending events

 Donating goods or services

Economic DEVELOPMENT GURNEE’S GOT IT ALL! “Gurnee’s got it all! Family friendly community, location and proximity to Chicago and Milwaukee, shopping, schools, parks, affordability, safety, good management, fiscal soundness, and a good mix of housing and value.”

W

ell said! What does this mean for economic development? It means growing those areas of our local economy (retail, tourism, manufacturing) that have enabled Gurnee to mature into the wonderful community it is today, while seeking new opportunities to diversify our revenues and employment base. Revenue generated by retail and tourism helps pay for new infrastructure (e.g. roads, sewer, water) and covers approximately 50 percent of all village operations, including police, fire and public works. Partnerships with Six Flags, Gurnee Mills and now Great Wolf Lodge (coming in 2018) – and the 23 million visitors they attract annually – are a large part of the reason why the Village of Gurnee has not levied a property tax since the year 2000. The village receives two percent of each retail shopping dollar and three percent of each dining dollar spent in town. When you shop or dine in Gurnee, you are making a direct investment in our future. Manufacturing and distribution operations do not generate sales taxes, but they do generate property taxes that support our

– Gurnee resident

schools, parks, library and other services. Equally importantly, skilled manufacturing brings high quality jobs for Gurnee residents. Over 94 percent of Gurnee residents ages 25 and over are high school graduates, and 47 percent hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. With an educated workforce and proximity to world-class research laboratories and educational institutions, Gurnee is well positioned to continue attracting innovative, high-tech companies. Independent businesses are vital to maintaining the hometown feel of Gurnee, and that’s what Gurnee’s Got It! is all about. Follow us on Facebook (Facebook.com/GurneesGotIt) to keep up with the goings-on of independent Gurnee businesses. Whenever you’re looking for local places to shop or dine, we encourage you to search the Gurnee Business Directory at www.gurnee.il.us/business/business-directory featured on the village’s newly designed website, which will launch in mid-2017. And, don’t forget to nominate your favorite Gurnee businesses for the “Best of Gurnee” awards presented by Mayor Kovarik

twice annually to two businesses that exemplify Gurnee’s hometown spirit and generosity. Nomination forms can be found on the village’s website. The village’s economic development committee is spearheading efforts to address a key goal articulated by many residents over the years – the revitalization of East Grand Avenue. We are pleased to announce a “clean up and green up” initiative this year, which includes sidewalk repair and a pilot project to beautify the corridor with new plantings. Please remember to support our East Grand Avenue businesses, especially during construction season; find alternate routes and keep them on your shopping “loop.” We’re all in this together! Collaboration and cooperation is at the heart of every great community. In Gurnee, this happens on so many levels. It happens in our neighborhoods, our schools, our clubs and organizations, our churches and it even especially happens in our institutions. The Chamber of Commerce, Visit Lake County, College of Lake County Workforce and Professional Development Institute, Small Business Development and International Trade Center, Lake County Workforce Development Board, local financial institu-

EXCELLENCE IN DENTISTRY, LTD.

E

xcellence In Dentistry, Ltd. is where you’ll find Drs. Howard I. Cooper and Kate E. Limardi. The practice has been located in Gurnee, at the corner of Washington and 21 in Saratoga Square, for 25 years. Over the years, they have completed three additions, and now occupy the entire northwest section of the Office Centre. Patients feel right at home in this state-of the-art facility. Dr. Cooper has been treating patients since 1991 and Dr. Limardi joined the practice in 2011. The doctors believe that education is the key to a beautiful smile – continuing their education, as well as educating their patients. Drs. Cooper and Limardi contin-

ue their education by attending meetings and lectures to achieve a much higher level of patient treatment. They have taken over 3,000 hours of continuing education, which allows them to not only treat their patients better, but also educate them. Informed and educated patients will be able to increase their home care and achieve better results in creating a healthier smile. The doctors are also concerned with patient health as a whole, and as such, they always examine patients’ medical history and overall health. They perform oral cancer screenings to find lesions early, in the very treatable stages. The Excellence In Dentistry team also treats their patients as family. They consider seeing patients return year after year the ultimate success. In fact, the practice sees three generations of many families on a regular basis. Whether you are bringing your kids to the office or if you are coming for yourself, the staff always treats you with the utmost care and respect. They say they “cater to cowards” and pride themselves on treating the “frightened child” in everyone. The biggest reward is taking a frightened/phobic patient and transforming them into a patient who truly enjoys coming back to the office. The entire team of assistants, hygienists and dentists are dedicated to creating a wonderful atmosphere where patients can relax and receive quality dentistry at affordable prices.

MOMCORN

M

18

omcorn is a family friendly, quick casual restaurant dedicated to bringing authentic foods from Mexico and Latin America to the Gurnee/Grayslake area. Its quick casual ambiance makes it convenient for people to enjoy an eclectic mix of street and market foods and select items from other Latin countries. Founded by Sergio Rivera and Kathy Ross, this restaurant is a Gurnee favorite. It offers the convenience of dining in, take out or delivery. Momcorn has earned awards for authenticity, rave reviews online, including two Trip Advisor Certificates of Excellence. Most foods at Momcorn are gluten and allergens free. The care taken in ingredient selection and preparation has earned their customer’s loyalty, gluten free diet or not. Momcorn was created to serve natural, healthy and authentic Mexican food. Instead of Tex-Mex or the highly-commercialized fare served in most Mexican restaurants in the in the United States. Once in Illinois, Sergio missed the market and street foods; simple, but full of wonderful flavors. After a 40-year career in education, Ross decided a new career might be just the adventure to start her “retirement.” So, she joined in partnership with Sergio and Momcorn was born. With its “open kitchen” design, customers can see their

food being prepared. Each dish is prepared to order, which allows for adjustments to meet the customer’s taste. Many of the dishes have a vegetarian option and can be made vegan on request. Opened May 2012, the restaurant offers tacos, tortas, quesadillas, burritos, flautas, sopes and signature dishes available nowhere else in Lake County. The kids’ menu features kid-friendly dishes and characters with corny but cute names such as Cornelius, Cornrad and Corntney, created especially for Momcorn. The Momcorn name is a pun on popcorn, and its tamales are available at Marcus Cinemas. Now you can have popcorn and Momcorn at the movies. Momcorn offers delivery during the lunch and dinner hours. Watch for the Momcorn van making deliveries in your neighborhood. A catering menu and online ordering are available on the website, momcorn.com and via Grub Hub and Yelp. Momcorn believes in giving back to the community. Mention this article when you come in, and 10 percent of your check will be donated to the Northern Illinois Food Bank. If you haven’t been to Momcorn yet, you owe yourself an A-maize-ing meal. Listen to the jingle on the website, or search for “Momcorn ad” on YouTube. You too will be singing this catchy tune along with your friends and neighbors.

JAMES D. SMITH – RE/MAX SHOWCASE

inding the right home in the right location, selling a cherished family home for top dollar or analyzing potential investment property values requires special expertise and knowledge. Helping people through the process, making connections and making a difference are all part of the job description for James D. Smith, an established broker/associate with Re/Max Showcase. “Being a broker is so much more than buying and selling homes,” said Smith, a Lake County resident whose 27 years experience and familiarity with employment, transportation, demographics, residential, investment and commercial properties make him an award-winning specialist in the field with an average 40-plus home sales/closings annually. Affiliated with Re/Max for more than 24 years, Smith said the signature Re/Max hot air balloon isn’t his only tie to the Gurnee community. His established longterm relationships with community residents, leaders, developers and businesses is a true barometer of professional success. Potential buyers and sellers appreciate his vast referral network of appraisers, contractors, builders, architects, home inspectors, movers, attorneys, mortgage lenders and others within the community. As a youth, Smith moved to Lake County with his dad, a construction worker, and mom, a meeting planner at Underwriters Labs. He took classes at the College of Lake County, initially worked in the film processing industry and in the 1970s worked as a Gurnee firefighter/ EMT. Today he lives in Gurnee with his wife, Wen Yi, a popular Chinese singer/songwriter who performed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His growing family includes three adult sons and four grandchildren. “I’ve seen Gurnee grow from 3,300 in the 1970s to more than

30,000 residents today, applaud the growth of our business community and booming tourism industry, and love helping wherever I can,” noted Smith, who is affectionately known for his collection of cartoon character ties. A Lake County resident since 1959, Smith maintains prominent affiliations with the Mainstreet Association of Realtors, Member of Senior Services committee & is 2016/2017 chairman of the Lake County Government Affairs lobbying for homeowner rights in Springfield, a member of the Small Business Advisory Council and the Greater Waukegan Area Development Coalition incubator group for small business. He is a specially designated MPR Military Relocation Professional and SRES Senior Real Estate Specialist for those age 55 and older. Other areas of specialization include designated professional endorsements for distressed properties, short sales and foreclosure resource certification. Strategically located just off the I-94 interstate between Chicago and Milwaukee, Gurnee’s real estate offerings include condominiums, townhouses and single-family homes – many of the ranch, contemporary, Georgian or Colonial styles. Located on lots up to an acre in size, some offer scenic water views or golf course frontage. Newer assisted living facilities, empty nester developments and meticulously renovated older homes also are available in today’s Gurnee’s bustling real estate market. “The healthy economy and ideal location of Gurnee continue to attract individuals, families and businesses alike,” said Smith, citing a tourism-fueled and sales tax support of tourist attractions like Six Flags Great America amusement park and Gurnee Mills, a shopper’s paradise, keeping Gurnee real estate taxes at bay.

Six Flags GREAT AMERICA

his spring, Six Flags Great America debuted its 15th roller coaster, The Joker Free Fly Coaster. Billed as the “most maniacal roller coaster to date,” the insanely twisted Joker coaster will be the massive new centerpiece in the Yankee Harbor section of the park, next to Batman: The Ride roller coaster. “We are excited to continue our partnership with the DC brand as it continues to resonate well with our guests. The Joker is undeniably one of the greatest Super-Villains of all time,” said Hank Salemi, Six Flags Great America park president. “This free-fly coaster will perfectly capture the essence of the warped and unpredictable nature of The Joker. It will take our park to the next level of thrills.” After being lifted straight up a 12-story, 90-degree hill, riders of the free-fly coaster will flip head-over-heels at least six times along the weightless journey. Thrill-seekers will experience exhilarating leaps and dives along a horizontal plane with unexpected drops as they tumble from one level to the next. The wing seats amp up the pandemonium because riders will experience this wild adventure with no track above or below – just the sky, ground and plenty of sinister thrills.

20

The unique design of The Joker features:  Massive, imposing, floating and twisting I-box track frame in a unique two-tone design  One-of-a-kind onboard magnetic technology featuring smooth head-over-heels free-fly flips providing guests the feeling of weightlessness as they soar outside the confines of a traditional track  4-D wing vehicles that seat up to eight per vehicle with a total of five vehicles  Face-off seats that allow riders to face each other as they tumble head over heels  A 120-foot-tall, 90-degree hill that is ascended by an elevator-style, chain-link lift  Two beyond 90-degree “raven” drops giving the sensation of free-falling

This summer will be filled with amazing events as the park hosts a Superhero Summer. Gurnee DISTRICT 56

urnee District 56 continues to demonstrate innovation and creativity to fulfill its commitment to the community to deliver an inspiring education to all children. This year, the district embarked on a three-year program to immerse coding and computer science skills across all discipline areas and decided to begin that program with K-2 students. The teachers have all been amazed with the innate abilities the youngest students have demonstrated in this area and admit they are learning as much from the students as the students are learning from them. As part of its blended learning philosophy, the district will

begin piloting online courses for students next year. As part of the district’s vision statement to place students more in control of what they learn and how they learn it, students will begin to learn more about topics of interest to them through the online courses. The district’s first online course next year will a Spanish class for beginners that will transition students to the formal classes taught in seventh and eighth grades. Also of note is the district’s new Future Ready library at Viking School. The new library symbolizes the innovative spirit of Gurnee District 56.

oodland Community Consolidated School District 50 is one of the largest elementary school systems in the state with approximately 5,700 students. Yet, the district takes pride in providing a small-school comfort level for every child. It has been 69 years since seven one-room country school districts came together to create Woodland and the schools (numbering five today) continue to evolve to meet the needs of the Gurnee

area. It all starts here with building a foundation of learning. Here is what makes Woodland special:  Celebrating Differences More than 40 languages are spoken at home and activities allow children to learn more about different cultures.  Dual Language Kindergarten through fifth grade students may be in a classroom where half of the day is spent speaking only Spanish and half of the day is spent speaking only English.  1:1 Technology Each child in fourth through eight grade has a Chromebook personal computer for learning.

Educational ROUNDTABLE

he Gurnee Chamber of Commerce works with local school districts, businesses and the Lake County Chamber of Commerce in order to foster communication and collaboration through an Education Roundtable. With a mission to serve and improve educational opportunity and business achievement for all students and businesses, the Educational Roundtable is composed of leaders from education, business, community and government. The Roundtable is charged with making ongoing recommendations for both the educational and business communities. “Within less than a year of establishment, the Education Roundtable has already proven useful by enhancing programs at the schools, providing volunteer opportunities to local businesses and creating an environment for honest feedback and dialogue,” said Deanne

Dalgaard Fisher, chairwoman. The group currently is working on a quarterly informational push out to the community in order to better inform individuals of the inner workings of school financials. “This need became apparent at one of our first meetings when many questions were asked regarding school finance in relation to property taxes and programming,” Dalgaard Fisher said. “Through the Education Roundtable, schools now have an opportunity to disseminate information to the business community that can further enhance business involvement and growth.” Roundtable members agree possibilities are endless in what this group can accomplish. “Although the influence may appear minor now, the impact over the next few years will be great as the relationship between the school community and business community continues to grow,” she added.

WE’RE PROUD TO BE

GURNEE’SCOMMUNITYBANK! What do we love the most about this community? The people we share it with! That’s why we support the families here, the local businesses and the charitable organizations, too. Beyond providing banking solutions, we also take pride in giving back to the people who work to make this area so great. Why? Because this isn’t just home to us; it’s home to all of us. And, as a true community bank, we know that when we all do our part, we can help make Gurnee better for everyone. CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF COMMUNITY BANKING!

675 N. O’Plaine Rd. | Gurnee, IL 60031 8476253800 | www.gurneebank.com

WE’RE PROUD TO BRING IT HOME. As a company made in this area, for this area, Wintrust and its family of true community banks is dedicated to the unique neighborhoods each serves. For 25 years, we’ve been banks that invest in, give back to, and get to really know our communities and the people living in them. When you bank with a Wintrust Community Bank, you can be confident your money is going back into the things that matter most to you.

Gurnee Community Bank is a branch of Libertyville Bank & Trust Company.
