anover and the Upper Valley straddle the New Hampshire-Vermont border in the Upper Connecticut River Valley, about 135 miles northwest of Boston. The intersection of Interstates 91 and 89 just south of Hanover has made the area an important crossroads of northern New England. With the highways so close by, if you rise early you can explore the coast of Maine, catch a Red Sox game at

Fenway Park or shop in Montreal – and still be home in time for dinner. Lebanon Airport, just six miles south of Hanover and Norwich, features short lines and daily round trips to Boston’s Logan Airport and White Plains, New York, where connections can be made across the country or around the globe. HISTORY

he signing of the Declaration of Independence was still 15 years away when, on July 4, 1761, colonists from Connecticut were granted a charter to roughly seven square miles of heavily wooded land in the Connecticut River Valley of New Hampshire. The first permanent settlement was started in 1765, east of todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hanover, where the rushing waters of Mink Brook powered saw mills and grist mills vital to the future of this rural outpost. Dartmouth College was chartered in December 1769, and when the college formally opened in 1770, an estimated 20 families were living in Hanover. In 1778, Hanover and several other

Grafton County towns seceded from New Hampshire and were admitted to the state of Vermont. They rejoined New Hampshire in 1784. By the time of the first census in 1790, 1,380 people called Hanover their home.

The village that sprung up around Dartmouth grew and eventually replaced todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hanover Center as the business hub of the town. Now, Hanover is an eclectic mix of downtown businesses and restaurants centered on a traditional Main Street and the more rural villages of Etna and Hanover Center. A population that nearly doubled from 6,259 in 1950 to over 11,200 today is almost evenly split between full-time residents and Dartmouth students. Across the river, Norwich has a population of 3,414, according to the 2010 census.

TOURISM opera performances by well-known opera performers. Head over to catch a play or music performance at the Lebanon Opera House. No matter where you choose, there are always performances to enjoy throughout the year. There’s always a reason to visit and plenty to see and do. The Hanover Conservancy protects over 2,000 acres of land in Hanover and has 11 different hiking trails for all ages and abilities. The Upper Valley Trails Alliance connects trails and people all throughout the Upper Valley. Nearby is Cardigan Mountain, a state park with several trails leading up the 3,000-foot “Old Baldy.” The Upper Valley is a great place to get outside, find a new vista to admire and enjoy nature.

25 kilometers of groomed crosscountry ski trails at Hanover Country Club and adjacent Storrs Pond, where the Oak Hill Ski Area hosted the NCAA Championships. Downhill skiers flock to the Dartmouth Skiway, a family area with a new lodge but an old-time feel featuring skiing and snowboarding. Many of the top ski areas in New England are within an easy drive. The whole family will enjoy sledding at Hanover Country Club or skating on Occom Pond, Campion Rink and Thompson Arena.

PARKS & RECREATION

ith the gently flowing Connecticut River on the western edge of town, hiking trails running to the 2,300-foot peak of Moose Mountain to the east, and Hanover Country Club, Occom Pond and Storrs Pond, Hanover has everything for an active and healthy lifestyle. The Appalachian Trail passes through Norwich and crosses the Connecticut River to meander straight through downtown Hanover before ducking back into the woods. It’s not unusual for a family out for a short walk to find themselves chatting with “thru-hikers” traveling the 2,190 miles from Georgia to Maine on foot.

Fitness enthusiasts can visit on a daily basis or buy memberships at the River Valley Club just over the town line in Lebanon, at Mighty Yoga or another local yoga studio or at Dartmouth’s state-of-the-art Zimmerman Fitness Center. u

The par-71 public course at the Hanover Country Club measures almost 6,500 yards. Tennis and swimming enthusiasts are right at home at Storrs Pond, a fee-based area that features tennis and basketball courts, a pond and a pool, wooded walking trails, picnic areas and secluded camping sites. Norwich’s Huntley Meadows offers tennis courts and fields for playing Frisbee.

Horseback riders of all ages enjoy Dartmouth’s Morton Farm, where college students and community members ride and board horses. Additional area golf courses, campgrounds, swimming and fishing holes are easy to find and accessible to all. For water sports, the Ledyard Canoe Club rents canoes and kayaks and offers instruction at reasonable rates. You can even reserve the Titcomb Cabin on Gilman Island for an overnight adventure and easy paddle from town, or you can fly fish for native trout at Mink Brook or fish for bass on Goose Pond.

RELOCATION: WHY LOCATE HERE?

Because we are close to everything … The Upper Valley is approximately two hours from Boston, four-and-a-half hours from New York City and three hours from Montreal. New Hampshire’s state capital, Concord, is an hour away as is Montpelier, the capital of Vermont. Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, is a 1.5 hour drive; it takes the same time to get to Manchester, New Hampshire’s largest city. Nearby Lebanon hosts a commercial airport that has daily flights to Boston and New York, while both the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport and Burlington International Airport can get you take anywhere in the world. Amtrak’s passenger service makes daily stops in Whiter River Junction. Locally, Advance Transit, a regional bus transportation system, serves the towns surrounding Hanover on a daily schedule. Vermont Transit (Greyhound) and Dartmouth Coach provide service to major metro areas including Boston, New York City and Montreal.

The economy in the Upper Valley is robust. Major employers include Dartmouth College, DartmouthHitchcock Medical Center, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Cold Regions Research & Engineering Lab, Hypertherm and several research and manufacturing companies that provide a stable foundation for employment and commerce. Biomedical, engineering and computer software research and development firms continue to emerge. The unemployment rate in the region has been consistently low in both states. Medical services in the Upper Valley are comprehensive. Just minutes from downtown Hanover and Lebanon is the

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, one of the foremost teaching and research hospitals in the country. This medical center includes the 429-bed Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic, the Norris Cotton Cancer Center, Dartmouth Medical School and a 224 bed Veterans Administrative Hospital, located in White River Junction. The Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon is a 32bed acute care community hospital with a 50-bed nursing home. There are also individual and group family practices as well as the Good Neighbor Health Clinic in White River Junction.

Because the Upper Valley has a high quality of life … The Upper Valley is blessed with a wide array of shopping and dining options. Retail businesses include mom-andpop stores to chain retail centers, as well as specialty shops and dining establishments. In Norwich there is the renowned general store, Dan & Whits, where it is said, “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it.” The area’s schools are very highly regarded as some of the best in New Hampshire. Norwich and Hanover make up the Dresden School District, the first inter-state school district in the nation. In addition to Dartmouth’s undergraduate and graduate level programs and its Institute for Lifelong Education at Dartmouth, there is the College for Lifelong Learning, (of the University System of New Hampshire), Lebanon College, a community college and a variety of technical schools and colleges. Dartmouth Medical School compliment Dartmouth’s undergraduate college. The institution is recognized as a research university and employs over 3,00 faculty, administrators and staff. As a college town, Hanover enjoys a great many cultural and academic activities. Year-round, there are conferences and lecture series, theater productions at the Hopkins Center and an art walk throughout Dartmouth’s campus. Several communities have local theater groups and art galleries include the AVA Gallery in Lebanon and the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen in Hanover. The Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich offers indoor and outdoor exhibits and programs for all ages. There is an abundance of recreational and sporting opportunities for all ages. Youth activities, organizations and sports include ice hockey, figure skating, downhill and cross-country skiing (the Ford Sayre Ski Program has produced a substantial number of US Ski team Olympians), baseball, basketball, field hockey, track and field, soccer, football, tennis, lacrosse, golf and kayaking. Many area communities have recreational programs and community centers. The Connecticut River is just one of the hundreds of rivers, streams, ponds and lakes offering a variety of canoeing, motor boating, rowing, sailing and swimming. There are family camp grounds, picnic areas, nature walking and hiking trails and networks. The multi-use Northern Rail Trail offers hiking, bicycling, skiing, horseback riding and snowmobiling opportunities. There are numerous golf courses and ski area within a short drive, and of course, hunting and fishing. Spectators can attend Dartmouth College’s 34 men’s and women’s varsity sports including hockey, baseball,

soccer, football, basketball, rowing, golf and lacrosse. Some visitors hike here via the Appalachian Trail, which runs from Maine to Georgia and meanders through Hanover, up and down Main Street (business district) and crosses the Connecticut River into Norwich. The Upper Valley is a great place to live and work, but there are some special reasons why natives, “near natives” and newer residents call the Upper Valley home. There are lifestyle choices from rural living to in-town convenience, from larger communities to small villages, from farm and horse country to resort and recreational communities. Low levels of crime, noise and pollution contribute to a sense of being safe. The beauty of the landscape in mountain views, pastures and woodlands, rivers and lakes, stonewalls and village character combine to make this place special. The charm of this valley can be found in its history, cultural sophistication, socioeconomic mix, spectacular beauty and educational and recreational opportunities. t its core, Hanover is a community of teachers and learners. Known as the home of the Ivy League’s Dartmouth College, the town also features one of the most highly-regarded public school systems in New England. The Dresden School District is composed of four schools in Hanover, New Hampshire and Norwich, Vermont; formed in 1963, it was the first interstate school district in the nation. With approximately 750 students, Hanover High School features a faculty that would be the envy of many small colleges. The Richmond Middle School and Ray Elementary School in Hanover, the Marion Cross School in Norwich and the Lyme School in Lyme, New Hampshire all prepare students for the challenging curriculum at the high school. Top students at Hanover High are able to take courses at Dartmouth College, whose student body is composed of 4,200 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students. Dartmouth offers 17 graduate programs in the arts and sciences and three graduate professional schools – the Geisel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering and the Amos Tuck School of Business. In Norwich, Vermont, you’ll find the Norwich Public Library, offering a Community Room space for local groups, exhibit space for artists in addition to the collection of over 35,000 volumes and free internet access. Also located in Norwich is the Montshire Museum, an award-winning, hands-on science museum whose 110acre facility opened in 1991. artmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is a 417bed tertiary care hospital, New Hampshire’s only Level 1 trauma center and multi-specialty group practice located on the Hanover-Lebanon town line. The medical center is part of New Hampshire’s only academic health system, with nearly 1,200 primary and specialty care physicians

located throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. The medical center’s academic partner is the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, one of the leading medical schools in the country. Dartmouth-Hitchcock is also one of the largest employers in the state with more than 10,000 employees. It has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as among the nation’s top 50 hospitals for gynecology for the ninth time since 1995; its bariatric surgery program has earned a Level 1 accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Bariatric Surgery Center Network Accreditation Program; and in 2003 Dartmouth-

Hitchcock Medical Center was the first New Hampshire facility to be recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a “Magnet Hospital” for nursing excellence, an honor that was redesignated in 2009. Check the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce website, www. hanoverchamber.org, or local newspaper listings and chances are you’ll find a contra dance at a local church, a noted speaker or author at a nearby bookstore or an area band or open mic night at a local restaurant. To give you a small picture of what you might find, if you’re planning a visit in the summer, consider the Old Fashioned Fourth of July on the Dartmouth Green or a sidewalk sale in town. In December, be sure to catch Celebrate the Season, an annual family night in town, a performance by the Christmas Revels or the Christmas Mystery at Rollins Chapel. The area is rich with galleries, museums and local venues for visual and performing arts, including Dartmouth College’s Black Family Visual Arts Center and Hood Museum of Art and the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and area restaurants hosting local art and musicians. Nearby Lebanon features the Alliance for the Visual Arts Gallery and Art Center that exhibits the works of more than 150 area artists. If Hanover’s Nugget Theater or the Loew Auditorium at the Hopkins Center for Performing Arts isn’t showing a movie to your taste, a short drive will bring you to other options. If sports are your thing, catch the action on the Dartmouth campus where opponents such as Harvard, Princeton and Yale are regular visitors, and Boston College, Notre Dame and Stanford occasionally dot the schedule. u
