THIS IS HARTFORD Hartford is a vibrant city masquerading as a small town. We know our neighbors, smile at strangers and aren’t afraid of hard work or a little snow. We’re a community that’s just as happy hitting the hiking trails as we are taking in a play. We are proud to be ranked as one of the safest and fastest-growing Wisconsin cities. We love our history and are investing in our future.

HISTORY Hartford’s beginnings are similar to those of many communities in Southeastern Wisconsin. Immigrants from countries like Ireland, Germany and Poland came over in the mid-1800s. Wisconsin, being on the frontier of the United States, was a great place to get a new start. Immigrants took to farming and setting up small craftsman businesses in towns like Hartford. Two of these early German immigrants were John Thiel and Nicolas Simon, surveyors sent out in 1844 to map out the features of what would become Washington County. Their description of the area attracted James and Charles Rossman, who constructed a dam on the Rubicon River and built a gristmill for grinding the grains that were grown in the area. Because of its location, Rubicon was the name given to the settlement that had developed around the mill, but the name was changed to Hartford in 1847.

LIBRARY The Jack Russell Memorial Library, a 35,500-square-foot facility, offers a wide variety of reading materials, audiobooks, music CDs, DVDs and periodicals with access to e-books and other downloadable products. There are 19 Internet workstations plus WI-FI service throughout the building. Individual and group study rooms are available along with community access to a large meeting room that is available during and after regular library hours. The library offers a regular schedule of educational and recreational programs for all ages.

HOMES

The early settlement’s first school was started in 1845 with 25 students. The Congregational Church was the first organized church in the community and began holding its services in 1847 at the school. By 1883, when Hartford was incorporated as a city, it had two schools and about a half-dozen churches. One of the more historically significant companies to operate in Hartford was the Kissel Car Company. Started in 1906 by Louis Kissel and his sons George and William, the company built automobiles until the Great Depression. During World War I, Kissel built trucks for the U.S. Army. At the peak of the war, Kissel focused exclusively on truck production and employed about 1,400 people to fill the military’s needs. The Great Depression forced the company to reorganize, and it focused production on outboard motors. The Wisconsin Automotive Museum in Hartford provides the rare opportunity to see the largest assembled group of Kissel luxury automobiles.

RECREATION CENTER The Parks and Recreation Department’s Recreation Center features a fitness center with elliptical machines, treadmills, free weights and other exercise equipment. The Signicast Family Aquatics Center is also a valued part of the facility and community. It provides something for everyone from water aerobics classes to recreational swimming.

RECREATION PROGRAMS Recreation programs are available for residents of all ages. They include seasonal sports and fitness, swimming lessons, dance, preschool education, adult education, youth enrichment courses, arts and crafts and teen events. Also, available in the community are club-sponsored recreation programs, such as youth soccer, wrestling, football and select baseball.

Nearly any type of housing design and location can be found within Hartford. Attractive and affordable single-family homes and multiplefamily housing units are readily available to call home and include lake homes, homes that overlook the countryside, condominiums and residential neighborhoods with yards both large and small. Whether you are looking to build a custom home to suit your family’s needs or are ready to move into an existing home, Hartford has endless options to fit within your budget. Those relocating to the area will be pleased to find that housing prices in Hartford are quite affordable in comparison to surrounding communities. Renters also have many options when it comes to housing. There are several apartment complexes to choose from for residents who are not looking for home ownership.

LOCATION & TRANSPORTATION The City of Hartford is about 35 miles north of downtown Milwaukee and is considered part of the metro Milwaukee area. State Highway 60 runs right through the center of downtown and connects Hartford with Interstate 41, which traverses the entire state and connects Green Bay, the Fox Valley, Fond du Lac and Milwaukee. State Highway 83 also runs through the center of downtown and connects Hartford to Interstate 94, which is the main route between Madison and Milwaukee. Several county highways connect Hartford to Beaver Dam, West Bend and Waukesha. So, no matter how you prefer to drive, Hartford and its roadways can accommodate travelers from near and far. The Hartford Municipal Airport on the north side of the city features a 3,000-foot hard-surface runway, one 2,250-foot turf runway and a self-service fuel system. A city taxi service available by contacting (262) 673-8223, and several restaurants are within a mile of the airport. Currently more than 100 aircraft regularly use the airport, which is a 30-minute flight to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, home to the EAA Air Venture. HARTFORD AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

HARTFORD. IT’S HAPPENING HERE VISITING HARTFORD Each year, thousands of visitors are attracted to Hartford because of the nature and wildlife offered at Pike Lake and the Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The Kettle Moraine State Forest – Pike Lake Unit covers over 700 acres and is a year-round destination for family fun. No trip to Hartford is complete without catching a world-class performance at the Schauer Arts Center, which features the 571-seat Ruth A. Knoll Theater with extraordinary acoustics and amenities. The Schauer Arts Center has hosted numerous worldclass acts over its history.

PIKE LAKE & KETTLE MORAINE Hartford is home to the Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest located in the middle of Kettle Moraine, a strip of glacial landforms which extend through southeastern Wisconsin. The forest is named after the 522-acre, spring-fed kettle, Pike Lake. Powder Hill, a 1,350-foot glacial kame, provides the opportunity for great hiking and spectacular views of the fall colors. Fishing, swimming, kayaking, picnicking and camping are popular summer activities while cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are ideal in the winter. Hartford is also home to 18 parks with over 200 acres that offer everything from children’s play equipment and sports fields to shelters and even an ice rink and disc golf.

GOLF & LOCAL TEAMS Golf is popular in the Hartford area with a number of highly-rated courses ready and waiting. The Washington County Golf Course, a par-72 course designed by the renowned Arthur Hills, is as challenging as it is beautiful. The course at Hartford Golf Club features 18 walkable holes making this a popular destination with a par of 72 as well. Just a short drive away is Erin Hills Golf 16

Course, which was home of the 2017 U.S. Open Championship. Recognized as one of Golf Digest’s top 10 public courses in the U.S., Erin Hills also features a number of different venues for dining and a variety of Stay and Play packages. For local sports enthusiasts, Milwaukee is home to several teams and is a relatively short drive from Hartford. Local teams include the Milwaukee Bucks basketball team, Milwaukee Brewers baseball team, Milwaukee Admirals hockey team, Milwaukee Wave soccer team and our beloved Green Bay Packers.

HOLY HILL Another popular local destination is Holy Hill, The Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, visited by over 500,000 guests each year from around the world. Visitors appreciate the peace, beauty and serenity at the Basilica and the 435 acres of countryside that surround it. During certain times of the year, climb the stairs of the historic tower to get a view of Wisconsin seen only from Holy Hill. It is one of the highest spots in the area.

WISCONSIN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM History also comes alive, particularly for automobile enthusiasts, at the Wisconsin Automotive Museum. Showcasing transportation history, the museum is Wisconsin’s largest auto museum, featuring an ever-changing display of classic and vintage autos and artifacts plus the largest assembled group of Hartford-built Kissel luxury automobiles. The museum also showcases the 1913 #1003 Steam Locomotive and a huge Lionel train layout sure to delight kids of all ages. The museum is also home of the Southeastern Wisconsin Short Track Hall of Fame, which preserves the legacy of local dirt track car racing that was hugely popular in this area of Wisconsin as well as nationally. The hall of fame honors the “greats” of 60 years of racing to commemorate and preserve this very real slice of Wisconsin history. 

VETERANS MEMORIAL AQUATIC CENTER The City of Hartford Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center project is a new outdoor facility with a 50-meter pool, zero-depth pool, bathhouse and concession stand. This aquatic center includes many new and exciting features such as open flume slide, raft slide, floatable waterwalk, water spray features and lazy river.

CHANDELIER BALLROOM A historic gem, the Chandelier Ballroom was built in 1928 as the Schwartz Ballroom and has been known as an architecturally prominent recreational facility ever since. Over the years, the Chandelier Ballroom went from an entertainment venue for vaudeville groups and big bands, to a prisoner-of-war camp holding more than 600 Germans, to Zivko’s Rock ‘n Roll Palace and the

Polka Hall of Fame. Today, the Chandelier Ballroom hosts wedding receptions, business functions and other social events. Though many changes have taken place at the ballroom from the past to present, the building stands as a reminder of history’s greatest moments.

THE ARTS SCHAUER ARTS CENTER Filled with culture and history, the Schauer Arts Center was transformed from a canning factory built in 1919 into a nonprofit, regional center for the arts that inspires creativity and connects people. Since opening, the Schauer Center presents professional touring performances in the Ruth A. AURORA MEDICAL CENTER Aurora Medical Center in Washington County is part of Aurora Health Care. Centrally located within the city, the acute care general hospital has a 24-hour emergency department, ICU and a Level III

trauma center. Accredited by the Joint Commission, the medical center offers a full range of ancillary and diagnostic services. Its cardiac care supports everything from heart emergencies to recovery and rehabilitation with regional experts. ADULT DAY SERVICES Adult day services are provided at the 1022 Club at the Aurora Medical Center Washington County campus, 1022 Sell Dr., Hartford. Constructed by the Medical Center Foundation of Hartford, the club promotes independence for the elderly to deter the need for nursing home placement. As a community-based center, it strives to meet the health and social needs of older adults and their families. Financial assistance is available with application.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT QUALITY GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS

HARTFORD FIRE & RESCUE DEPARMENT

The governing body of the City of Hartford consists of a mayor and city council with nine alderpersons from three aldermanic districts. The city council also employs the help of a city administrator to run the daily operations of the government.

The Hartford Fire and Rescue Department has over 60, paid, full-time and on-call staff at two centrally located stations. The department continually strives to implement the most efficient, effective and cuttingedge firefighting and life-saving equipment available. The emergency medical service operates ambulances at the EMT-IV technician level. The EMTs are licensed to provide many pre-hospital, life-saving interventions in medical emergencies.

HARTFORD POLICE DEPARTMENT The Hartford Police Department is located downtown in the City Hall Building and has a sworn staff of 30 officers and one K9 officer, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cash,â&#x20AC;? a Red Fox Labrador. Officer Cash is trained in drug detection and is also used in a variety of community outreach capacities. The department encourages Neighborhood Watch programs and routinely provides home and business security checks. The department also provides a school liaison officer who works primarily within Hartford Union High School.

HARTFORD ELECTRIC Hartford Electric provides electrical power to residents by purchasing electricity

through WPPI Energy, a consortium of municipal electric utilities. Along with electrical power, the city also provides water services for residents from several wells.
