In 1843, the Mexican government gave soldier and surveyor Guillermo Castro almost 27,000 acres of land. He named it Rancho San Lorenzo and encompassed what is today Hayward and Castro Valley. Castro operated the ranch from his home that sat on the site of historic City Hall on Mission Boulevard. The discovery of gold in January 1848 brought sweeping changes to California. Thousands of people flooded into northern California hoping to strike it rich in gold. Many, like William Hayward, quickly found that gold mining was hard work and not very profitable.

The cultural diversity of Hayward is rich and is represented by superb arts facilities and organizations as well as prominent heritage sites. At the Hayward Japanese Gardens more than three acres of plants and bonsai are presented in traditional Japanese style. Pathways lead visitors to a koi pond, a teahouse and observation areas. The Douglas Morrisson Theatre is an outstanding venue for live stage entertainment. Owned and operated by the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, the theater company presents plays, musicals and concerts in the 250-seat facility. The visual arts are celebrated at facilities such as the Hayward Area Historical Society Museum of History and Culture, the Hayward Arts Council galleries and the Sun Gallery. Adding to this is public art that can be discovered throughout the community, including stunning murals in the downtown area. California State University, East Bay and Chabot College offer concerts, theater, dance and art shows. Cal State East Bay is home to the University Theater, an art gallery and sculpture garden. Golfers Love Hayward Hayward has outstanding public and country club golf courses. The Hayward Recreation and Park District operates the Skywest and Mission Hills of Hayward golf courses. Skywest is a popular choice for its challenging 18 holes on a tree-lined course stretching 6,862 yards. The facility includes a driving range, practice green and a restaurant. Mission Hills is a 9-hole executive course that includes a

Students at Life Chiropractic College West are enthusiastic about becoming America’s future chiropractors and serve as interns in the campus Health Center that is open to the community.

Eden Medical Center’s state-of-the-art facility in Castro Valley brings together patient-centered care, technology and sophisticated design. It has 130 private patient rooms, with an additional 34-bed Universal Care Unit. Eden is home to the Sutter East Bay Neuroscience Institute, Primary Stroke Center and Regional Trauma Center. Services include cancer care, advanced imaging, rehabilitation and emergency care.

Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center provides free and low-cost health primary care and social services to 15,000 patients in Southern Alameda County who would otherwise have nowhere to go to receive care. Hayward Wellness also provides services such as optometry and podiatry. Group visits include classes on healthy eating and living, and a demonstration kitchen.
