The Village of Hoffman Estates continues to enhance its position as a great place to live and do business. The community’s many positive attributes gained national attention in 2016, when Money Magazine recognized Hoffman Estates as one of the country’s Best Places to Live. In addition to this distinction, Hoffman Estates businesses and residents saw several large developments come to fruition in 2016, with overall construction activity at its highest level in many years. I-90 Tollway construction at the Barrington Road interchange neared completion, restaurants throughout the village were opened or revitalized, and new entertainment options provided a further boost to the activity at 59/90. The construction of the full Barrington Road interchange stands out as one of the most significant projects in the village, as the multi-year widening and reconstruction of I-90 nears completion in early 2017. The interchange will soon include full access with new ramps to and from the west. “The reconfigured Barrington Road interchange will certainly have a positive impact on our region. AMITA Health will gain important public safety and patron access from the tollway, while residents and business patrons will have a more direct route

to the Barrington Road corridor from I-90,” said Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod. New bus stops for express service on I-90 and a Pace Bus Park & Ride facility have been integrated into the interchange design, alongside major improvements to provide pedestrian and bicycle access. Companies nearby will have direct accessibility to the Park & Ride facility and to bike trails, allowing employees additional transit options and reducing some area traffic congestion. Additionally, two more pedestrian and bicycle crossings of I-90 are planned: at the Bartlett Road bridge, and at Hoffman Boulevard just west of the CN tracks, providing more connections north and south of the tollway. “Connectivity is important for Hoffman Estates, as the village spans a large land area and is intersected by the Jane Addams Tollway,” McLeod said. “Providing a means to connect residents to area businesses, park facilities, and nature preserves via a network of pedestrian

and bicycle pathways is important for the future of the village, improving the quality of life for everyone that lives and works in the community.” The village completed the third year of an enhanced five-year street revitalization program, using $5.6 million in local funding to reconstruct and resurface 21 streets throughout the village. Resurfacing of Hillcrest Road and Moon Lake Boulevard were completed utilizing an additional $1.3 in Federal Surface Transportation Program funds. The village also coordinated the long-awaited installation of a traffic signal at Roselle Road, which provides better access to the shopping centers to the south of Golf Road. The village’s comprehensive storm sewer assessment analysis resulted in both the planning and construction of the Grand Canyon storm sewer replacement in 2016. This project is an example of the vital infrastructure improvements that will take place in the village in coming years with funding through Hoffman Estates’ Stormwater Utility program. In addition to these infrastructure improvements, a number of large scale commercial, entertainment and industrial projects have moved from concept to completion. Clothing retailer Duluth 

Trading Company chose Hoffman Estates as the location to open its first stand-alone store in the country, next to another new village addition, the Main Event Entertainment Center, where revelers can bowl, eat and play laser tag. These ventures are attracting even more visitors to the 59/90 Entertainment District, which includes the Sears Centre Arena, Cabela’s, the Saddle Room restaurant and OTB and the Hoffman Estates Beer Garden. The district will see a long-awaited gas station open in a facility shared with Culver’s restaurant in 2017, giving motorists a place to fill up near this busy highway and commerce interchange. The Adesa Auto Auction began operations at its wholesale auction facility on Beverly Road in 2016. During the year, Woodfield Acura expanded its business with a new new-car showroom at Golf and Gannon roads, and a medical office building and a retail strip center were opened for business in the village as well. Construction of the 56,300 square foot Trumpf Technology Center was approved and underway in 2016, with completion anticipated in 2017. The building, located in the H90 business park, is designed to have a strong visual presence along I-90. The National Archives and Records Administration selected the village for the temporary housing of items that will eventually be placed in the Barack Obama Presidential Library in Chicago. This use of the former Plunkett Furniture building is approved for up to a six-year term through September 2022. Redevelopment of the village’s oldest retail strip center, the Hoffman Plaza Shopping Center, is underway, with construction expected to continue

throughout 2017. The village has also seen residential development resume after the recession, with construction of new single family homes in the Bradwell Estates subdivision, and in MI Homes’ Bergman Farms subdivision at Algonquin and Ela roads. A proposed 185-acre development at the northwest corner of Routes 72 and 59 would also include compact multi-family and single-family residential components. “New home construction is exciting to see and it’s a good indicator of the village’s overall health,” McLeod said. “We’re already seeing great interest in the new housing options being offered.” Under Hoffman Estates ownership since December 2009, the Sears Centre Arena offered visitors a compelling array of entertainment in 2016. Success is anticipated to continue as the arena became the new home of the Chicago Bulls NBA Development League team, the Windy City Bulls,

starting in November 2016. McLeod praised the group involved in bringing the deal to fruition. “The Sears Arena management team, village staff and elected officials were really instrumental in creating a win-win for the Chicago Bulls and the village. The first season is off to a tremendous start, and we look forward to a long partnership with Bulls leadership, the organization and its fans.” As part of this new development, a state-of-the art scoreboard was installed and upgrades were made to visitor spaces. In addition to continued growth throughout the community, the village’s fire, police and health and human services departments continue to excel. “These departments are led by top-notch professionals who work hard to ensure their teams are providing excellent service to our residents,” McLeod said. “They also reach out to residents interested to explore these emergency services through the Citizen’s Fire and Police Academies and Police Explorers programs.” Residents and businesses also enjoy the services of the village’s diligent and highly regarded public works department. In January 2017, the department was named Public Sector Partner of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce, in recognition of public works’ excellence in maintaining village infrastructure, responsive snow removal, and the department’s assistance and involvement in numerous community events throughout the year. The village continues to make use of powerful social media tools, its website, the Citizen Newsletter and other platforms to inform the community about exciting events and relevant programs and services. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT The economic engine of Hoffman Estates is picking up speed, just like the vehicles traveling the newly-reconstructed I-90 that runs through the village. Businesses of all sizes and varieties opened around Hoffman Estates during 2016, bringing additional sales and property tax revenues to the community and attracting new residents. The dynamic 59-90 Entertainment District, located in the western portion of the village, saw the addition in mid-September of a 15,000-square-foot Duluth Trading Company store that sells workmenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

apparel and other outdoor apparel and is known for clever and humorous television and billboard advertising. Main Event family entertainment center is also a new addition to the District. The 50,000 square foot facility stands between the Sears Centre Arena and Cabela’s and has been drawing healthy crowds ever since its grand opening at the end of August. Visitors can enjoy bowling, laser tag, a gravity course, a gelato bar as well as a sports bar and a restaurant. “Main Event seems to be doing very well and is increasing in popularity with families. They have separate rooms for birthday parties, corporate team-building events and other private events and offer specials virtually every day,” said Kevin Kramer, economic development director for Hoffman Estates. featuring Starbuck’s, Firehouse Subs and Mattress Firm opened at Poplar Creek Crossing last April and Denny’s is planning a new restaurant adjacent to the Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant. In November Adesa Auto Auction, the second-largest wholesale auto auction company in the United States, opened an auction site on 65 acres west of the Prairie Stone Business Park. It holds weekly auto auctions for car dealers and rental companies. The auctions are not open to the public but the auction is drawing buyers from all over the Midwest to stay in area hotels and patronize local restaurants. A new 50,000-square-foot technology center and showroom is being constructed on five acres in the Huntington 90 manufacturing park by TRUMPF, a German firm, The facility will combine an innovative automation center with research and development functions and is expected to open this summer. They chose the site because of its visibility and its close proximity to O’Hare International Airport, its primary competitors and I-90. Of course, the news is never entirely good. decided it no longer needs such a large corporate facility and it vacated its 1.5 million-square-foot campus in September. The village is now working with the property owner to think creatively and find a replacement. “I look at this as an opportunity to be innovative and come up with a fresh, new use for that property,” Kramer said. Elsewhere in the village, there are five new fast food restaurants – the Culver’s, a Wendy’s, a Burger King and two McDonald’s. Three are net additions to the village’s restaurant stock. The other two are total reconstructions of previously-existing restaurants, Kramer noted. “We are thrilled to see this kind of reinvestment in Hoffman Estates, in some cases bringing new life to locations which formerly held dilapidated old structures. It makes a significant difference to the community in terms of aesthetics and tax base while giving customers a better overall

experience,” he said. In addition, Woodfield Acura opened a new sales facility at the corner of Golf and Gannon on the site of the former Dover Straits restaurant in late 2016. It sells new Acuras while the former Woodfield Acura

site across from Hoffman Estates High School sells the firm’s pre-owned automobiles. Down the street, along Roselle Road between Golf and Higgins roads, the village’s first strip shopping center built in 1959 by Jack Hoffman himself, Hoffman Plaza, is also expecting an update. Part of the former Dania Furniture building will be demolished to make room for updated anchor tenant space, as well as out-lot restaurants and service businesses. Probably the quirkiest new use for formerly empty space, however, is at Golf and Barrington Roads in the former Plunkett Furniture building. Kramer revealed that the Obama Presidential Library’s archives have rented the space for the next several years. They will use it as a storage facility/warehouse while materials are sorted and the eventual library is planned and built in Chicago’s Jackson Park. It will not be open to the public. 

INDUSTRY Hoffman Estates is an ideal place for manufacturers with its enviable location near an international airport and along major highways which helps firms keep supply chain costs to a minimum. Companies such as Bosch Rexroth have been a part of the Hoffman Estates business community for more than 20 years. Bosch manufactures hydraulics, electric drives, linear motion technology and other systems which keep things moving, according to Kevin Kramer, the Village’s economic development director. A high profile project for the firm was the manufacture of the Panama Canal’s new moveable gates which allow the massive lock to function. Bosch Rexroth sees the importance of educating a future workforce and to show their dedication, they generously gave to local educational institutions, donating $81,000 to local High school Districts 211 and 214 to encourage investment in manufacturing education. FANUC America Corporation, a subsidiary of FANUC CORPORATION in Japan, also has a large facility here. FANUC provides industry-leading robotics, CNC systems and factory automation to help manufacturers maximize efficiency, reliability and profitability. CMIC, Inc. (formerly known as JCL Bioassay) moved to Hoffman Estates’ Prairie Stone Park in 2008 and is set to expand its physical plant and employee count during 2017. CMIC is a medical testing laboratory which currently employs approximately 30 biologists and technicians. Hoffman Estates also houses the North American headquarters of Silesia Flavors, a German firm that creates and distributes food and beverage flavors. It employs about 35 people and, according to Kramer, they precisely mix their flavors in the Hoffman Estates facility, bring in beverages like water, soft drinks or liquors and then add the flavorings and ship the beverages back to the client. Even though

Silesia is known for flavoring both food and beverages, the Hoffman Estates facility is primarily set up to only flavor liquids, Kramer noted. Hoffman Estates has attracted a cluster of food flavorers in recent years, a grouping that Kramer said they hope to further develop in the near future. For instance, Tate & Lyle PLC established a Commercial and Food Innovation Center in Hoffman Estates in early 2012. This center serves as the global headquarters of Tate & Lyle’s Innovation and Commercial Development group and the regional headquarters for the Specialty Food Ingredients business in North America.

The 110,000-square-foot facility features taste-testing facilities and laboratories, employs 160 highly-paid professionals and draws visitors from around the world. Milwaukee-based Sensient Technologies, an international manufacturer of colors, fragrances and flavors for food and other products, moved to Hoffman Estates in 2013. Sensient formulas are found in food, beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and inkjets. Now that supply chain costs are a focus for all manufacturers, Kramer said they would like to complete that supply chain circle by attracting more of the flavoring companies’ many clients.

FUN FACTS When TIME’s Money Magazine released the 2016 Top 50 Places to Live list, the Village of Hoffman Estates ranked 27th. The magazine particularly cited the village’s outstanding schools, teacher-student ratio and local recreation opportunities and touted its diversity of population. Communities were ranked on over 60 factors, including taxes, education, affordable housing and health care. Hoffman Estates got its start when Jack Hoffman of Father & Son Construction (also known as F & S Construction) arrived here in 1954 from Phoenix. They were looking to expand into the Chicago area. Unincorporated Schaumburg Township was attractive because O’Hare Airport expanding and crews were finishing the Northwest Tollway. The Hoffmans never intended to build a village. They just wanted to construct quality homes for first-time buyers. Hoffman Estates was “Music Central” for the Chicago area when Poplar Creek Music Theatre was open near the intersection of Route 59 and Higgins Road from 1980 to 1994. John Denver was the first act to perform at the outdoor amphitheater on June 6, 1980, and 15 seasons later, Spyro Gyra was the last act, performing on Sept. 2, 1994. During those years the outdoor venue could hold 13,000 music fans on the lawn and 7,000 in pavilion seating. There were families living in the Hoffman Estates area long before Jack Hoffman came here. The 1856 Sunderlage Farmhouse, Sunderlage Smokehouse and Greeve Cemetery are all owned and maintained by the village. The brick Greek Revival-style smokehouse is believed to have been built first, during the 1840s. It is the only smokehouse of its kind in northern Illinois and is officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Obama Presidential Library has chosen a site within Hoffman Estates as a temporary warehouse/storage facility for its papers and other archival items while the library is being built in Chicago’s Jackson Park. The storage facility, which will never be open to the public, is located at Golf and Barrington Roads in the former Plunketts Furniture building.

Hoffman Estates’ first village hall was established in a farmhouse that had been owned by opera producer Arthur Hammerstein and his wife, silent film star wife, Dorothy Dalton. Hammerstein was the uncle of lyricist Oscar Hammerstein of Rodgers and Hammerstein fame. They sold

the property to F & S Construction in 1954 and it became Hoffman Estates’ first village hall. Today it houses the Children’s Advocacy Center. Hoffman Estates has a unique and somewhat mysterious arched concrete bridge over Poplar Creek near the intersection of Routes 59 and 58. It is known to locals as the Lion Bridge because of the four decorative lions that adorn it. Extensive research by Pat Barch, the Hoffman Estates village historian, revealed that the Lion Bridge was built in 1906 and designed by Harry L. Emerson. He built similarly decorated bridges in Wheeling and Lemont. Many wonder why such a beautiful bridge was built for the use of farmers when it is the type of bridge that would be more appropriate in a large city park. What fascinates bridge historians, however, is the fact that this reinforced concrete bridge is the earliest example of its type identified in Illinois. In fact, according to the Illinois Historic Bridge Survey, it is eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. One-third of Hoffman Estates’ land area is made up of forest preserves. This translates to 4,080 acres of forest preserves in the village. In 1979, the village sponsored a contest to select an official village flower and tree. The daisy was chosen as the village’s official flower since “the daisy was growing on the land long before there were people or houses in Hoffman Estates.” The official tree is the hackberry. It is native to the area and in 1979, a hackberry was the oldest and largest tree growing on the old village hall property on Illinois Boulevard. In the 1950s and early 1960s the residents of Schaumburg Centre and the residents of Hoffman Estates engaged in a land war. Schaumburg residents protested the tract development of F & S Construction, wanting to enforce a five-acre minimum on home sites in Schaumburg Township. To stop tract development they began annexing land until they nearly encircled the Hoffmans’ development. Outraged citizens living in what would become Hoffman Estates took Schaumburg Centre to court. Later, after Hoffman Estates incorporated in 1959, a 120-acre tract which was already part of Schaumburg Centre, even asked to be de-annexed so they could become part of Hoffman Estates. Schaumburg challenged the de-annexation and lost.

The families of Hoffman Estates are served by six public school districts. In total within the boundaries of Hoffman Estates there are 12 public schools, two parochial/religious-based schools and a Montessori school serving infants through high school students. In addition, two districts send their Hoffman Estates students to schools in other communities. After graduating from high school, Hoffman Estates residents also have access to William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, a community college that offers both university-level courses and specialized career preparation programs. Overall, the quality of Hoffman Estates’ eclectic educational offerings is high. In fact, the community boasts four Blue Ribbon Schools that have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as superlative. They are Fairview Elementary School in Community Consolidated School District 54, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School and Frank C. Whiteley Elementary School in Community Consolidated School District 15 and St. Hubert Catholic School. The Montessori Academy of North Hoffman is an integral and rapidly growing component of Hoffman Estates’ education scene. Founded in 1989 by Molood Naghibzadeh, it began with eight students in a strip mall storefront. Today it boasts three campuses and approximately 200 students ranging in age from infants to teenagers, and is run by Naghibzadeh’s daughter and new Head of School, Sara Motlagh. In addition, the academy’s main campus completed a major renovation last fall. The Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori over 100 years ago, is a child-centered educational

approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. According to the American Montessori Society, it is a view of the child as one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It is an approach that values the human spirit and the development of the whole child – physical, social, emotional, cognitive. Hallmarks of a Montessori school include multi-age groupings that foster peer learning, uninterrupted blocks of work time, and guided choice of work activity. “Younger children learn from older children; older children reinforce their learning by teaching concepts they have already mastered. This arrangement also mirrors the real world, where individuals work and socialize with people of all ages and dispositions,” according to Society materials. The teacher, child, and environment create a learning triangle. The teacher encourages the child to meet rigorous individual goals by working their own unique work plan, Motlagh noted. Some choose to do a bit of math, a bit of English, a bit of everything each day. Others choose to concentrate on one subject in-depth each day. It is up to each individual how they meet the deadlines they have agreed to with the teacher. In this way they learn time management, she said. That is even more the case in the upper level “Erdkinder” (high school level). Increasingly abstract thinking is encouraged and highly rigorous materials studied. Montessori students learn to think critically, work collaboratively, and act boldly – a skill set for the 21st century, according to the AMS. In fact, both Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, and Sergey Brin, founder of Google, were Montessori-schooled children. “Our goal is to help our children become happy and independent and eventually, to become contributing members of society,” Motlagh said. “We are pleased to see that Montessori education is finally becoming better recognized for the quality of our outcomes.”

CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE Jan. 26, 2017 Chicago Marriott Northwest, 4800 Columbine Blvd., was the site of the sixth annual Celebration of Excellence dinner during which the outstanding achievements and contributions of Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce and Industry members were recognized. The 2017 Chamber board of directors was presented at the dinner. Tickets are $50 per person.

ANNUAL MAYOR’S BREAKFAST Feb. 22, 2017 Held each February in varying locations around the village, this is Hoffman Estates’ version of the State of the Union address. Mayor William McLeod and the village staff make a brief multimedia presentation to update residents and businesses on what is happening and expected to happen in Hoffman Estates. New opportunities are outlined. New construction plans and businesses are introduced. New projects and initiatives are announced. This year’s breakfast was held at the Sears Centre Arena. FOOD TASTING FESTIVAL April 27, 2017 The sixth annual Food Tasting Festival will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. April 27 at the Stonegate Conference and Banquet Centre, 2401 W. Higgins Rd. This exciting event showcases restaurants and food/liquor providers from around the area offering samplings of their unique cuisine and liquors. In addition, culinary students from Harper College and Elgin Community College are challenged by Tate & Lyle, the manufacturers of Splenda sweetener, to bake the perfect cupcake using Splenda instead of sugar. Attendees participate in the judging as each school prepares mini-cupcakes to taste and then everyone casts votes for the best at the festival. NORTHWEST CELTIC FEST April 29, 2017 Celebrate the heritage and traditions of Scotland, Ireland, England and Wales at the Sears Centre Arena. This free, day-long event for people of all ethnicities features Celtic dancers and musicians, demonstrations of popular Celtic sports, like rugby and soccer, as well as vendors and clans selling and demonstrating all things “Celtic.” Bring the family. There are free children’s games and activities, as well as genealogists who are willing to help you trace your Celtic roots. COMMUNITY FISHING DERBY June 3, 2017 This catch-and-release derby is held the first Saturday of June on Illinois’ “Free Fishing Day” when no one needs a fishing license to enjoy angling. The Community Fishing Derby annually attracts over 500 registered fishermen of all ages. Prizes are offered for the longest fish caught by registered fishermen in four different age groups. The lake is stocked with tagged fish, sponsored by local businesses, and the lucky winners receive cash prizes. This is truly a community event with our local Boy Scout troop selling bait, Cabela’s offering fishing pole rentals for the day as well as fishing tips, the police and fire departments doing demonstrations and local restaurants selling food. The week-long celebration of the Fourth of July includes a parade, carnival rides and games, live entertainment, food vendors providing every taste you could imagine and a fireworks show on the Fourth that will blow your mind! This informative luncheon is hosted by AMITA Health and held at Alexian Brothers Women & Children’s Hospital.

PLATZKONZERT GERMANFEST Sept. 8-9, 2017 Autumn is the time for celebrating all things German, and that is what the Hoffman Estates Arts Commission does each September with its free Platzkonzert Germanfest, an annual event featuring German singing, musicians, dancers and food at the Village Green, 5510 Prairie Stone Pkwy. Platzkonzert literally means “open air concert” in German. The outdoor event features brats, sauerkraut, potato salad, strudel and other German fare; beer and wine on sale; German entertainment for all ages; and activities for the children. The Hoffman Estates Park District even brings its portable climbing wall that is transformed into the “Matterhorn” for the day, while a raucous stein-carrying contest adds to the fun for adults.
