tasca is a delightful study in contrasts with historic buildings, charming homes and local businesses, as well as modern facilities and Fortune 500 businesses. Located 20 miles northeast of Downtown Chicago in DuPage County, Itasca offers residents, businesses and visitors access to superior transportation options, including two major interstates, Metra train service on the Milwaukee District West Line, and Pace Bus service. The newly constructed IL Rt. 390 is providing western access to nearby O’Hare International Airport. The village has also established a network of walking and bike paths around the community. Itasca has a quaint downtown, which features local merchants and restaurants. Just north of the downtown is the community’s signature green space, Usher Park. On many Saturday afternoons, visitors will see couples posing for wedding pictures in Usher Park’s iconic gazebo with the historic church in the background. Surrounding Itasca’s downtown area are many historic homes, some built in the mid-1800s. The majority of Itasca homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, with many newer homes built on the community’s perimeter. Hamilton Lakes and Spring Lake are Itasca’s two largest office parks with a total over 4 million square feet of office space. Itasca is also has a number of industrial businesses with the largest industrial area being west of I-290. This industrial park has over 8 million square feet of industrial, flex and office space. Every year, Itasca hosts some of the area’s best festivals, including Itascafest in July and Oktoberfest in September. In partnership with Hamilton Partners, Itasca puts on the biggest fireworks display in DuPage County on Independence Day.

ITASCA COMMUNITY LIBRARY T he Itasca Community Library continually adjusts its services and resources to suit current-day needs and demands and fulfill its role of education, lifelong learning and culture for community members. No longer is the Itasca Library a depository for only books. In addition to its collection of traditional print books, magazines, music and DVDs, the library has expanded its digital content to further expand its resources of music, movies, e-books and e-magazines. Worthy of mention is Zinio, the online service that allows downloads from over 50 popular magazines to your tablet, smartphone or laptop. You have the ability to search for back issues and, once downloaded, are yours to keep. Hoopla, another proprietary resource, allows you access to a wide collection of e-books, movies, TV shows and music. With these services, there’s no waiting for waitlists to clear, titles are always available and you never have to worry about your materials being overdue as they are automatically discharged from your account. These resources, in addition to existing subscription services for downloadable e-books through

MyMediaMall and Axis 360, make up our collection of e-resources. If you’ve never tried downloading to a device or computer and would like to know how, arrange a one-on-one appointment with a librarian who will walk you through all the steps and get you set up. Along with its collection of resources and source for information, the Itasca Community Library is also a dynamic community center filled with programs and activities for all ages. In the past year, the library has expanded its kids’ programs, adding evening storytime hours for working parents and bilingual storytimes in Polish. Other library resources help students maintain a competitive edge, such as STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programs for children of all ages. The library has partnered with DuPage Children’s Museum in a unique program for children 6 years and under that focuses on play and learning. In addition, the library is collaborating with Robinson Engineering to provide innovative programming to encourage middle schoolers to become interested in how civil engineers design and construct safe roads, bridges and water systems, and to teach them to develop a curiosity about the world around them. For adults, the library can help residents transform their lives. From offering opportunities to practice conversational English language skills to providing assistance with resume writing and technology literacy, the library helps in improving the lives of its citizens thereby strengthening the community. With the variety of special interest groups, including chess group, quilting, Mah Jongg and the ever-popular monthly trivia night at the local Fox and Turtle, the library is also a community hub for residents to convene to share, learn, collaborate and enjoy. The Itasca Community Library today houses more than books, and the librarians are more than good stewards of materials. Both have morphed and have evolved to meet the changing needs of the patrons. If you haven’t already done so, drop by to see what it offers. You will be amazed by the variety and depth of live programming and the other amenities available to patrons of all ages.

Franzen Intermediate School serves grades three through five and F.E. Peacock Middle School teaches students in grades six through eight. he Itasca Park District has recently launched a mobile app that allows access to all program and facility information, as well as the ability to register for programs on user’s smartphones. Download the free app from Google Play or Apple App Store. Itasca is installing a new playground surface at two parks later this year. Washington Park and Country Club Park will receive artificial turf rather than the usual mulch. Shelters will also be added at both parks. The park district is acquiring two new 15-passenger vehicles for trips and programming. Artistic murals have been added to two park district facilities: Franzen Park’s mural features n educational theme; the Itasca Waterpark mural has a Caribbean theme. Franzen Park had main playground pieces replaced earlier this year including a large ADA accessible ramp on the main play structure and an additional concrete ADA Ramp was installed close to the swing set. Phase 2 of the Springbrook Nature Center renovation is in progress, providing new exhibits and interpretive indoor and way-finding outdoor signage. The park district is awaiting information on the $335,000 suspended Illinois Department of Natural Resources grant for this project. The OSLAD Grant for the Ray Franzen Bird Sanctuary in the amount of $363,500 has been released and the project is moving forward. The park district is excited for this fantastic renovation which includes Itasca’s first dog park, a nature-based play area, outdoor fitness station, outdoor classroom, boardwalk, shelter, grill and habitat restoration. The Itasca Park District has once again been named a Gold Medal Finalist through

the National Recreation and Parks Association. Four finalists from across the nation are competing for this prestigious award. Itasca with a population of approximately 9,000 is opposing park districts with populations of up to 30,000. The park district has won this award previously in 2003 and 2009. The winner will be announced in October 2016 at the national conference. TRAPP FINANCIAL, LLC Trapp Financial, LLC is an independent financial services firm that was founded in 1992 by Christine Trapp, who is affiliated with LPL Financial. The firm provides resources and programs that help their clients with life events such as embarking on a new career, switching jobs, starting a family, divorce, retirement and the loss of a loved one. They also assist business owners as well as medical and law professionals, in setting up 401K programs for their employees. The firm has been based in Itasca since 1997. “We are different from many other financial service companies in that we take the time to get to know each of our clients and their personal situations. By doing so, we are able to provide them with comprehensive services,” Trapp said. “This includes not only investments and financial planning, but insurance needs, tax planning and estate planning.” “We ensure that our clients have confidence when it comes to their financial lives – from checking to make sure their beneficiaries are up to date, to confirming their anticipated ‘retirement check’ from their IRA is scheduled to be received in a timely manner, we see to the very

EQUIPMENT DEPOT Equipment Depot is the largest independent material handling and equipment rental firm which sells, rents, services and provides parts for the leading brands of forklifts and aerial lifts, as well as allied warehouse/ manufacturing facility, construction aerial equipment and even rail car movers. It is relatively new to Itasca, moving to 751 Expressway Dr. from Elgin in 2014, said Michael Scaletta, general manager of the Itasca, Burr Ridge and Grayslake facilities. There is also a location in Rockford. Equipment Depot currently has 35 locations throughout the United States. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We chose to move to Itasca to be closer to our manufacturing and warehousing customers, many of which are located around Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hare,â&#x20AC;? Scaletta said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our new location allows us to service our customers faster and more efficiently which reduces our costs and improves our customer satisfaction.â&#x20AC;? Equipment Depot employs approximately 80 people in Itasca doing everything from sales to service to administration. Based in Houston, Equipment Depot is owned by Pon North America, a division of Pon Holdings, a family-owned Dutch trading company that employs 13,000 people worldwide. Pon assembled Equipment Depot by acquiring 14 equipment companies from around the country, beginning the process in 1998, Scaletta said. Among the brands Equipment Depot represents in the Illinois market are Caterpillar, Mitsubishi, Jungheinrich, Linde, Genie, JLG and Skytrak. LAW OFFICE OF DAVID R. SCHLUETER Dave Schlueter is celebrating 30 years of practicing law. The Loyola University of Chicago Law School graduate got his start by working for the law office of Garr & Schlueter in Elk Grove Village in 1986. He chose to open his own practice in 2009 and moved to Itasca where he has been living since 1995. Schlueter’s law office caters primarily to helping individuals and business owners with commercial and residential real estate (buying, selling and leases) and estate planning. He also handles day-to-day corporate legal oversight for small and medium businesses all over the Chicago area. He regularly practices in Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane and Will Counties and expects his practice to continue to grow in terms of clients and staff for the foreseeable future. Schlueter also volunteers once a month at the Dundee Township Senior Center, offering legal advice to those who need it, and serves on a variety of charitable boards. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT I tasca is an attractive place for businesses to be because of DuPage County’s low taxes; the beautiful office spaces available there; and the fact it is in a great location from which to service their customers. “Vacant office space in Itasca is filling up as businesses grow and consolidate here and also as many new businesses choose to leave Chicago because it is so expensive to do business there,” said Nancy Hill, Itasca’s community development director. Among those which have recently made Itasca their new home are Bluegrace Logistics, the accounting firm of Martin & Martin, and Family Entertainment Group which designs, operates and owns familyoriented arcades.

Two others, Keyence and Bucky’s, have chosen to expand within Itasca. Keyence, which manufactures and distributes sensors and laser products, moved to a larger office facility and Bucky’s Mobil, at the corner of Devon Avenue and Arlington Heights Road, totally reconstructed its service station, adding a larger convenience store and a car wash. “We also have two new construction projects which are underway,” Hill said. “The American Academy of Pediatrics is constructing a new five-story office building in Hamilton Lakes, with visibility from I-290. They wanted a new state-of-the-art building to reflect their philosophies about serving the medical needs of children. We expect them to move in during the summer of 2017.” The other project is a 300-unit high-end apartment complex called The Residences at Hamilton Lakes. It is also due to open in the middle of 2017. “By building apartments within Hamilton Lakes, the goal is to create a more vibrant mix of uses there so that Hamilton Lakes can soon attract some entertainment and restaurant venues to that complex,” Hill said. Progress is also being made on the Itasca portion of the Elgin-O’Hare Expressway, which is due to be complete by the end of 2017. “The Illinois Toll Highway Authority has had lots of work to do and their contractors have been moving along pretty efficiently,” Hill said. “We still have a couple of vacant parcels fronting on the future Elgin-O’Hare Expressway and we have had some inquiries about them recently. So, we are hopeful that someone will submit some formal ideas soon, “ she added. Elsewhere in the village, the Itasca Country Club is making great strides in their renovations of the clubhouse building. “If you haven’t been there in a while, you wouldn’t recognize the interior,” Hill said. “They are doing a great job of bringing both dining options and golf to the public.” In addition, the Village of Itasca is working to make accessibility improvements to its nature center. Dirt trails are being paved so that they can be used year-round and can better accommodate those with mobility issues.

ommunities need their businesses – to provide jobs, of course, but also to supply daily necessities and needed services for residents and also to generate sales and property taxes which provide the funds for public services. Two of the early businesses which remain today are Itasca Bank & Trust Co. and the Itasca Country Club. Itasca Bank & Trust Co. traces its roots to H.H. Franzen who came to Itasca in 1888. He teamed up with Emil and Martin Mensching to open the Itasca Bank in 1890. Franzen had a natural talent for banking and is said to have been involved in founding over a dozen suburban banks. The original bank building that he constructed (and was robbed by Baby Face Nelson in the 1930s) still stands on Walnut Street, complete with its cornerstone and night deposit slot. It is occupied today by a beauty shop. In 1948, Itasca State Bank moved to Bensenville where there had not been a bank since 1933. Elmer Franzen, H.H. Franzen’s son, then founded The Itasca State Bank (the current bank) to replace the old Itasca Bank. In 1978 The Itasca State Bank became known as Itasca Bank & Trust Co. The growth of Itasca Bank & Trust Co. has mirrored the growth of Itasca. The year it was chartered, the new bank welcomed returning World War II veterans as they looked to start families and live the dreams they had held onto during the war. Itasca Bank helped over a thousand people buy their first home, and hundreds buy their first car. From the 1960s through the 1980s, Itasca Bank wrote approximately 50 percent of all residential mortgages in Itasca and adjoining towns. A true community bank, Itasca Bank & Trust also helped many entrepreneurs get their new businesses off the ground and helped countless others grow and prosper, working with them through economic ups and downs. Itasca’s other longstanding business is the Itasca Country Club, which was founded in 1925 by B.B. Clover. He sought to make Itasca a mecca for aficionados of the new game of golf, said Jerry Danzer, professor emeritus at the University of Illinois – Chicago and longtime Itasca resident. But The Great Depression virtually wiped out Clover and stalled development in Itasca until after World War II.

Today the Itasca Country Club is a designated historical landmark by the Village of Itasca’s Historical Preservation Committee, even though the original clubhouse burned in 1963. The Lyons Family owned the Club until 1999 when it was sold to the club membership and became a private equity club. Itasca Golf Investors LLC (IGI) acquired Itasca County Club in September 2014 from the equity members. Since then they have spent over $1 million renovating the main level and lower level of the clubhouse. Many other businesses have come and gone over the years, but each helped move Itasca toward the community it has become today. For instance, there was the Eggleston Hotel on Walnut Street which was built in the 1880s. The structure still stands today at 205-207 N. Walnut St. and it houses offices. For many years, Itasca was the end of the commuter run for the railroad, so a train would pull in on Saturday night and sit idle until it went back to Chicago on Monday morning. The train crew would spend the weekend at S.G. Eggleston’s hotel and, according to Michael Stachnik, archivist for the Itasca Community Library, the conductor ran a Sunday School in an empty train car every Sunday morning because Itasca had no churches at the time. Other early businesses that made their mark on Itasca included Ernst Schroeder’s blacksmith shop and plow factory, which he opened in 1873. He invented a plow which he made by hand. Its design was so good that the John Deere Company offered to buy the patent. But Schroeder refused to sell and only sold his plows locally. Schroeder continued to shoe horses and fix carriages and wagons until his death in the 1920s. Henry Droegemueller Sr. also had a blacksmith shop, located at Irving Park and Walnut Streets, built around 1884. Other businesses in the early days of Itasca included William Baruth’s store which opened in 1884. He offered “well-selected stock” including dry goods, boots and shoes, groceries, crockery, wine, liquors and patent medicines, according to Stachnik. There was also John Schuette’s grocery and candy store, Mr. Handvill’s barber shop, Bloom’s Butcher Shop, Emil Mensching’s dry goods store, Clara and Martin Mensching’s grocery store, Ernst Kraegel’s Itasca Lumber, Feed and Coal business, the Itasca Hardware store and eventually, William Wendt’s auto repair shop, which morphed into a dealership for Chevrolets, Buicks and Studebakers.
