Joplin Strategic Plan
JOPLIN STRATEGIC PLAN
In an always vigilant effort to advance the interests of Joplin’s residents, businesses and nonprofit agencies and better discern the role the Chamber of Commerce can play in the life of Joplin, members of the Chamber board have banded together in recent months to formulate and institute a new Chamber Strategic Plan. Much thought and discussion has gone into what Joplin needs at this point in its history and how the Chamber can contribute to economic growth. It was decided the goal should be to attract and maintain “young, diverse professionals who value a high quality of life, an active lifestyle and a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, while maintaining a keen sense of community,” said Tobias Teeter, President/CEO of the Chamber, in a recent LinkedIn article on attracting talent to Joplin. “I’m witnessing a clear shift from business attraction to talent attraction (and retention) as the key economic development driver for the Joplin area. Increasingly, Joplin’s ability to attract and retain millennials and those in Generation Z (after the millennials) will decide our local economic fate,” Teeter also noted in the article. “For many Millennials, second cities are becoming their first choice. Younger professionals are shunning larger cities and moving back to their hometowns in large numbers. They are attracted to lower cost of living, easier commutes and closer connections with family. They seek a neighborhood-oriented, livable version of the urban lifestyle that still offers viable
career and entrepreneurial opportunities, burgeoning music and cultural venues, bike trails and walkable streets, and robust restaurant, coffee shop and bar scenes,” he added. The group paid particular attention to delineating the Chamber’s role in building a better future for Joplin and decided that they should work to grow and service local businesses, improve livability in Joplin, attract both talent and new industries, and build and market the Joplin brand. In addition, based on the vision casting of the Chamber Board and stakeholders, Chamber staff has built out and is revisiting its programming and resources that align with the original mission. They also plan to increasingly reach out to local businesses and entrepreneurs through five dedicated work groups to discover how the Chamber can help their businesses grow and improve the livability of Joplin for them by championing investments for the future like an event center, the Cornell Art Complex, street beautifications and a unified innovation hub. In addition, there are plans for upgrading Chamber technologies and recruiting additional “under 40” professionals into the Chamber and its leadership team. “The Joplin Chamber's roles are shifting and going forward we are going to focus our resources on: (1) growing and servicing local businesses, (2) improving livability, (3) attracting both talent and new industry, and (4) building and marketing the Joplin brand,” Teeter noted.

“We will also lead a structural improvement to Joplin’s entrepreneurial ecosystem through collaborations, combining capacities and programs to promote and provide workspaces, educational programs, mentor-ships, and networking opportunities as a unified ‘innovation hub’ where technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship will thrive,” he added. “Joplin is a dynamic community with people who are proud of the city in which they work, live, and play,” added Kelli Perigo of Freeman Health System. “The Chamber’s strategic plan moves to spotlight the businesses, people, and assets in Joplin and the region. The Chamber staff and Board are excited to work through the strategic plan to support the future growth and prosperity in Joplin and the region.” Jerrod Hogan, President of Anderson Engineering, agreed. “Joplin is an amazing place. We have incredible people, endless opportunities and great things are happening here. I am thrilled with the Chamber’s new strategic plan and areas of focus. The Chamber is honored to serve and support continued growth and prosperity in our region. We have a committed staff, an engaged board and the right leader for our next chapter. This is going to be a great year for Joplin and Joplin business!” w

BUILDING AN ENTREPRENEURIAL ECOSYSTEM University’s Small Business Development Center and the Downtown Joplin Alliance. Combined resources include three dedicated small business incubator facilities, educational workshops and seminars tailored to teach entrepreneurs how to start and sustain a business, networking and mentorship programs and a drive to see economic prosperity and diversity in the Joplin region. The educational opportunities will see a boost in applicability, accessibility and diversity to fit the needs of the changing entrepreneurial landscape in the nation.
This effort is driven by the collective resources of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation in partnership with the City of Joplin, Missouri Southern State
Joplin is uniquely positioned on Missouri’s transit system to be useful to commerce, and a swelling daytime population makes it an attractive destination for
entrepreneurs seeking to start a new business. Unfortunately, most resources are aimed elsewhere. This innovation hub hopes to change that. “There are many resources outside of the area to assist small business owners,” said Loni Smith, Director of Small Business Incubation for the Joplin Chamber. “We hope to fill that regional void. Our low cost of living is an obvious attraction but there is so much more to come in Joplin in the near future.” Now is the time to get excited about entrepreneurship and the forces that have the ability to join together to make a brighter future for start-ups through mentoring, investing and a passion for change.
JOPLIN STRATEGIC PLAN
Through a collaboration of the region’s business support systems, the Joplin area is poised to launch an innovation hub downtown. The goal: provide a structural improvement to Joplin’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. By combining our capacities and programs as a joint partnership, we can promote and provide workspaces, educational programs and networking opportunities that will benefit small businesses and start-ups in a meaningful way. Our purpose is to unify our strengths and provide services where technology, innovation and entrepreneurship thrive.

Advanced Training & Technology Center joplincc.com/attc The goals of the Advanced Training & Technology Center (ATTC) are being met, as most every student trained at the Center is obtaining employment and entrepreneurs are finding success through the Center’s business incubator.
BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY
A partnership between the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, City of Joplin, Crowder College and Workforce Innovation Board, the Center includes Crowder-taught classes in welding, advanced manufacturing, information technology, computer-aided drafting and community health. Crowder is nearly doubling enrollment each semester at the center as the courses offered continue to grow in popularity. In addition, they are near 100% job placement for graduates. “The certifications Crowder offers at ATTC are in high demand in the region,” said Loni Smith, Director of Small Business Incubation at the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce. “We often have employers host job fairs on site and recruit before graduation.” In addition to the classroom areas, the building has more than 6,000 square feet of additional business incubator space, including a full commercial kitchen to incubate culinary businesses. The incubator space is the only one of its kind in Joplin, and can ease the financial burden on entrepreneurs in a variety of fields who are trying to get a business off the ground. “Our partnerships with local educators are critical to being able to provide vital resources to local entrepreneurs and small business owners. Their services and expertise help shape the culture and success of local business,” Smith said. “Our collective abilities to train and educate small business owners will help determine their ultimate success for years to come.” There are several small businesses in the Center and most have reported job creation in the last year, Smith said.

Several new activities are planned – or already taking place – at the Center:
BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY
• Educational workshops in partnership with the Small Business Development Center at Missouri Southern State University geared toward starting a new business and helping enhance best practices once your business is established. It is a quarterly series facilitated by SBDC and open to the general public as well. • A partnership with the Downtown Joplin Alliance to host events on building entrepreneurial culture in the region.
•D eveloping an Entrepreneurs in Residence program where the Center pulls resources from newly retired executives and entrepreneurs in the region to help mentor new businesses and develop a greater sense of entrepreneurial community. osting a needs assessment of the •H entrepreneurs in the region to help better understand their needs. “Local business partners and networking are what drive the local economy,” Smith said. “Through a collaborative effort
between educators, business owners and entrepreneurs, we are positioning ourselves to raise the Joplin brand and turn our region into a prosperous hub for all. The Chamber’s network of businesses and their willingness to work for the greater good of our community is what will set us apart regionally. We are on the cusp of something great.” Contact Loni Smith at (417) 624-4150 or loni@joplincc.com for more information about the Advanced Training & Technology Center and its offerings.

O U T S TA N D I N G B U S I N E S S R E S O U R C E S The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce’s Economic & Workforce Development branch embraces local and regional initiatives in its efforts to improve economic prosperity in the Joplin region. From influencing public policy on behalf of the business community, to leading task forces designed to improve infrastructure and encourage technology-oriented startups, developing Southwest Missouri is a core focus at JACC.
Affiliated Organizations The Chamber is affiliated with a number of organizations, subsidiary corporations and joint ventures aimed at growing the region. The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, for example, promotes endeavors that support charitable, cultural and educational
programs and projects. The Foundation supports educational programs such as Tomorrow’s Leaders Today, Leadership Joplin and Young Professionals Network, and oversees the Newman Innovation Center and the Advance Training & Technology Center.
JACC staff also supports efforts specific to the area inside the city limits of Joplin. The Joplin Industrial Development Authority, operated by chamber staff, strives to develop and market the Crossroads Business Park as well as maintain the Joplin-Webb City Industrial Park.
Chamber staff members also overlap as staff for a variety of these affiliate organizations, including the MOKAN Partnership (MOKAN) and Joplin Capital Corporation (JCC). The MOKAN provides revenue sources to support the economic development efforts in the Joplin area, while the JCC furnishes small business loans and/or equity for projects that would not be financed through conventional means.
JACC also has a voice in redevelopment, which oversees implementation of the master plan for the region. The master plan encompasses long-range community planning and direction across all sectors, including economic development, downtown development, transportation improvements, medical care, social services and arts, culture and recreation.

The Joseph Newman Innovation Center The Joseph Newman Innovation Center (NIC) provides a positive environment for entrepreneurs and the development of innovative new businesses. With office spaces available for lease and shared amenities such as conference rooms, break room and telecommunications infrastructure, the NIC provides a professional atmosphere for focusing on your new business without the risk of having to sign a long-term lease agreement. Located downtown, the NIC blends accessibility with a professional, urban atmosphere. Perhaps even more beneficial than the space itself is the network of business experts who can be accessed through connections at the NIC. Businesses of all types can benefit from the expertise of the Joplin team, which includes Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce staff, the Small Business Development Center at Missouri
Southern State University, Downtown Joplin Alliance and other statewide development agencies. Access to these resources is not restricted to the Center’s tenants. Our goal is to assist the entire
region, not one building. NIC Director Loni Smith emphasizes the significant positive impact the facility has had not only on the fortunes of tenants, but also on the economic prosperity of the region. w ww.j o pl i n c c .c o m z 21

M E R C Y H O S P I TA L J O P L I N mercy.net For more than a century, Mercy Hospital Joplin has cared for the health care needs of the four-state area. In 1896, the Sisters of Mercy arrived with hopes of opening schools but discovered a need for health care because many miners working in the Joplin area needed access to a hospital. The Sisters were ambitious and started several small schools, in addition to opening Mercy Hospital. The hospital grew over the years. In 1968, the Sisters opened St. John’s Regional Medical Center, which was licensed for 367 beds. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by the May 22, 2011, tornado. Today’s Mercy Hospital Joplin is a new, technologically advanced, 240-bed hospital with adjoining clinic/physician office space on a 100-acre campus along Interstate 44. The 900,000-square-foot, $435 million hospital is eight stories high with room for expansion and unprecedented storm-hardened features. Mercy Hospital Joplin has received numerous accolades over the years. Most recently, the hospital was awarded an A grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization, for the fourth year in a row. This designation recognizes Mercy’s efforts in protecting patients from harm and meeting the highest safety standards in the United States. Mercy not only excels in patient safety, service and quality, but also is a leader in bringing the most-advanced technology to Joplin.
From 3D mammography and Automated Breast Ultrasound, to low-dose CT lung cancer screening and a linear accelerator, Mercy’s advanced technology and caring staff provide patients with the best care. Mercy’s cancer program and the Mercy Breast Center are both accredited by the American College of Surgeons.
all without leaving home. Readings alert the Mercy Virtual Care Center team to sudden changes, so they can reach out to the patient to see what’s happening and make changes to medication or simple suggestions. The program can decrease their medical costs and increase quality of life.
With robotic surgery at Mercy Hospital Joplin, patients experience less pain, have fewer complications and a faster recovery time. These are also outpatient procedures that do not require a hospital stay. Unlike open surgeries that require large incisions, robotic-assisted procedures use a number of small incisions usually 0.5 to 1.5 centimeters long. The robotic “wrists” can rotate 360 degrees and move in tiny increments, providing greater surgical precision and improved access to hard-toreach areas.
The experts at the Mercy Bariatric Center specialize in obesity, its causes, prevention and treatments. Bariatric surgery is divided into two different approaches: restrictive, where the stomach’s size and capacity are reduced, and malabsorption, where the stomach’s ability to absorb calories and nutrition is reduced. Mercy provides a variety of bariatric procedures including gastric sleeve, gastric banding and gastric bypass. In addition to partnering with the patient’s primary care physician, Mercy utilizes psychologists, dietitians, physical therapists, cardiologists, pulmonologists and surgeons to ensure the patient’s success.
Sometimes it’s an everyday challenge to manage a healthy lifestyle. A Mercy program called vEngagement is doing wonders for patients with multiple and complicated medical conditions such as those with congestive heart failure. The program helps keep them well from the comfort of their own home and reduces their need for hospitalization. Mercy’s virtual health care providers keep a close “medical eye” on the patient’s vitals through a secure internet connection, a tablet and wireless monitoring equipment. Each day, the patient can easily monitor weight, pulse, oxygen levels and blood pressure on devices that link to the tablet,

Freeman Health System is in its 94th year delivering exceptional, quality health care to Joplin and its surrounding communities in the four-state area. With the largest network of physicians and providers, Freeman offers more than 70 specialties to families and individuals. Statistics and outcomes can be measured in patient visits, surgeries and births, but they do not tell the full story. Freeman leads the way in cardiac and vascular care, orthopedics, sports medicine, women’s services, number of births, mental health services and stroke care, thanks to skilled, dedicated and compassionate caregivers who are invested in the community. Freeman’s free online health risk assessments help patients to recognize possible symptoms and warning signs for heart disease, diabetes and weight loss surgery. Individuals are encouraged to follow up as needed with their physician or health care provider and research more to become more familiar with symptoms. To reach and strengthen the community through wellness education and outreach, Freeman offers a variety of services that extend outside of the walls of the
hospital. Freeman Screen Team provides quality diagnostic health care screenings throughout the region. Freeman Screen Team specializes in providing care to those who might not seek medical services due to costs or transportation by offering low-cost health screenings. In addition to the early detection screenings, blood pressure and blood cholesterol/ lipid panel testing, nutritional counseling is provided to those attending these special events. Early detection screenings include abdominal aortic aneurysm, peripheral arterial disease and stroke/ carotid artery screenings, as well as an osteoporosis risk assessment. Freeman is also active in neighborhood schools, providing school-based clinics that benefit students, faculty and parents, saving time and helping keep kids stay in class (if possible). With school-based clinics in Carl Junction, Neosho, Seneca and McDonald counties, Freeman strives to offer the best physical and mental health care available. Additionally, Freeman is the only Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in a 70-mile radius. Families receive assistance with medical needs such as prescriptions, medical equipment and specialty care through local donations to CMNH.
One-hundred percent of every dollar raised locally stays local – donations help children and their families in 14 southwest Missouri, northeast Oklahoma and southeast Kansas counties. Freeman WellBalance program earned the 2018 Nation’s Best and Brightest in Wellness award from the National Association for Business Resources. Freeman is the only program in the area to earn this recognition. The program honors companies that promote employee wellbeing, worksite health and wellness. WellBalance is the Freeman employee wellness program that promotes healthy lifestyles through free health screenings, fitness classes and workshops and seminars on topics ranging from financial management to physical fitness and nutrition. In 2018, Freeman also earned the American Heart Association’s Workplace Health Achievement Gold Award for its WellBalance program. Freeman was also recognized with more distinctions, including almost 100 separate categories from CareChex – a quality rating system that helps consumers make informed decisions about where to obtain their health care. HEALTH CARE
CHILDREN’S MERCY JOPLIN childrensmercy.org Pediatric specialty care is available to families in Joplin and surrounding communities thanks to collaboration between Children’s Mercy Kansas City and Freeman Health Systems in Joplin. Children’s Mercy is committed to working with family providers by employing pediatricians who provide world-class subspecialty care directly to patients in the Joplin community. Children’s Mercy Joplin moved to a new location in 2018, 1801 W. 32nd St., Building A. The affiliation of the two institutions benefits children in southwest Missouri because it improves access to care, quality of care and affordability by reducing travel time and expenses for families. Children’s Mercy Joplin offers rotating sub-specialty clinics in 10 specialties – cardiology, electrophysiology, cystic fibrosis, endocrinology/diabetes, gastroenterology, hematology/ oncology, hemophilia, nephrology, plastic surgery and urology. In addition, more than 20 pediatric sub-specialty clinics are available via telemedicine. The new location allowed Children’s Mercy Joplin to double in size. It now has 10 exam rooms, a larger waiting area, more parking with direct access to the building, a point-of-care lab and additional work space for staff. “We know there is a demand for pediatric specialty services in Joplin,” said Marshaun Butler, vice president, Children’s Mercy outreach & regional practices. “For almost 25 years, our specialists have traveled to southwest Missouri/southeast Kansas to provide convenient appointments to local children. This expansion allows us to increase our clinic capacity to better serve these patients and families.” 44 z J OPLIN AR E A CHA M B E R O F CO M M E RC E

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE C H A R I T I E S O F T H E F O U R S TAT E S rmhjoplin.org Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Four States believes nothing else should matter when a family is focused on the health of their child – not where they can afford to stay, where they will get their next meal or where they will lay their head at night to rest. We believe that when a child is hospitalized, the love and support of family is as powerful as the strongest medicine prescribed.
Ronald McDonald House of the Four States opened its doors on July 27, 1998. This cornerstone program serves families of seriously ill children and ill expectant mothers being treated at Freeman Health System and Mercy Hospital Joplin. Twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week the 14,000 square-foot facility at 3402 South Jackson in Joplin offers families a home away from home, the support of other families experiencing the same circumstances and the comfort and care provided by staff and over 140 volunteers.
Ronald McDonald Family Room opened in November 2017 in Mercy Hospital Joplin. When a child is critically ill, parents need a break from the ongoing stress of beeping monitors and busy intensive care units. EDUCATION
A well-rounded educational experience at an early age provides a valuable boost for children, which is why the Joplin School District opened the state-of-the-art Joplin Early Childhood Center in 2018. About 260 students ages 3-5 are educated at the 38,000-square-foot center, with about 51 percent of the students requiring special education services. The early childhood center includes 20 classrooms, plus common learning spaces, activity areas and a learning grove that is situated in the middle of the building. “We have so many features that are different than other preschools in the area,” said Mindy St. Clair, JEC director. “Some of these features are a huge sand and water table, center space outside of the classroom that can be changed to follow each unit the students study, bathrooms for every room and small group learning spaces. Also, we have the most wonderful staff to help educate our youngest learners.” Joplin started its early childhood program in 1990 and hopes to grow the number of students it serves even more in the coming years. The $10 million cost of the JEC was funded equally by the federal and state governments. The building also won two awards for architecture and design: International Interior Design Association Mid-America – Silver Award in K-12 Education; and American Institute of Architects Kansas City – Citation Award in Interior Architecture. JEC is just one of the impressive aspects of the Joplin School District, which serves more than 7,800 students from per-kindergarten to 12th grade in 11 elementary schools, three middle schools, one high school, a career and technical center and an alternative center. Technology is incorporated throughout the curriculum. The student-to-computer
ratio is 2-to-1 for grades K-7 and 1-to-1 for upper grades. Serving as the largest district in the area, Joplin Schools offers a plethora of course offerings and extracurricular activities. Joplin High School students have the ability to graduate with an associate degree. They can engage in technology education, and take classes in perengineering and robotics to name a few. Also, the high school offers Advanced Placement courses, dual-credit courses, Project Lead the Way courses and online learning opportunities. In addition, Franklin Technology Center offers students opportunities to prepare for the workplace directly after high school. Among the honors, the district, leaders, staff and students have achieved: •A long-standing history of recognition with Top 100 Missouri Scholars, state and national qualifiers in SkillsUSA, FBLA state, DECA state, along with many state and national qualifiers in fine arts and athletics. •S tudents with perfect scores on the ACT, with averages from the 2017-18 school year: – Top 15 students composite score was 31.95. – Top 40 students composite score was 29.22. – Top 50 students composite score was 28.58. – Top 150 students composite score was 24.86.
who competed at the international competition in 2019. Another JHS student was second place overall in the same competition. ix Joplin High School graduates •S recently earned associate degrees from Crowder College through a partnership with Joplin Schools and Missouri Southern State University. •T he district has adopted the Missouri Seal of Biliteracy to recognize and celebrate students who acquire biliteracy skills and sociocultural awareness. The primary focus of Joplin Schools is its “3 to Achieve” initiative, which drives its strategic plan:
STUDENT READINESS: • Helping students reach goals set for achievement and critical thinking throughout the K-12 education journey that will help them as they advance within the district and into college/the work world. • Encouraging student ownership of learning, which encourages them to be aware of their academic status, participate in classes and engage with fellow students.
LEARNER SUPPORT: • Building student-centered relationships, attracting and retaining quality staff and obtaining technology tools and instructional resources.
EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT: • Prioritizing learning time.
• 100 years of JROTC.
• Providing a safe, nurturing environment.
•C ontinued success at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Regional Science Fair for high school students, including a first-place winner
• Engaging and informing parents and other stakeholders. • Practicing fiscal responsibility.

EDUCATION
jacss.org Joplin Area Catholic Schools has a legacy in Joplin going back to 1885 when the Sisters of Mercy founded St. Peter’s School. The system now encompasses three schools: St. Mary’s Elementary School, St. Peter’s Middle School and McAuley High School. The schools are accredited through the Missouri Nonpublic School Accrediting Association and educate the heart, mind and soul of their students as Christian values in the Catholic tradition are included in all studies as well as weekly church services. The schools are one family, one community educating children for life. St. Mary’s is the home to the early childhood program where children ages 2-5 experience the joys of learning at an early age, and continue at St. Mary’s with kindergarten through fifth grade. Children in grades 6-8 attend St. Peter’s and their high school career continues at McAuley with the opportunity to take Advanced Placement and dual-credit courses. The JACS system is a member of MSHSAA and is in the Ozark Seven Conference. The girls’ volleyball team earned the 2018 district championship. Students in the JACS system have a greater opportunity to play varsity-level sports from freshman to senior year at McAuley in sports such as volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, track and golf. Students at St. Mary’s and St. Peter’s actively participate in athletic activities. JACS student/athletes have won 31 district championships. The 2018 graduating class at McAuley completed more than 2,600 hours of community service, and earned more than $1 million in scholarships. Approximately 99 percent of students graduate and attend four-year universities and colleges across the country.
College Heights Christian School collegeheights.org College Heights Christian School recently celebrated its 40th year as a college prep non-denominational school in Joplin. The school, which has an enrollment of approximately 550 in preschool through high school, is a Christ-centered learning environment where students attend weekly chapel and have Christian values
and Biblical lessons incorporated into all studies. CHCS competes against area schools in sports such as cross country, track, basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball, tennis and golf as a member of the Missouri State High School Activities Association. The school also offers drama, academic bowl, acclaimed programs in vocal and instrumental music and visual arts. All students follow the college prep curriculum with additional options including Advanced Placement calculus, biology and lit and comp along with 33 hours of dual credit classes. The Spanish program is taught from preschool through high school dual-credit Spanish 4. The Missouri A+ scholarship program was recently added to numerous other collegiate scholarship opportunities. National Merit Commended and Finalist students are commonly named from College Heights. Upon graduation, students attend a variety of colleges across the country.
Martin Luther School martinlutherjoplin.com Martin Luther Christian School is an accredited early education, elementary and middle school in Joplin. The school educates students from preschool through eighth grade. It provides whole child education, linking curriculum to the real world, helping students become problem solvers, good stewards and active citizens. The early childhood center features a flexible schedule for families, along with
classrooms that are also safe rooms in the event of inclement weather. The school offers half-day and full-day kindergarten and first through eighth grades. There is a low student-to-teacher ratio because of class size limits.
Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School tjeffschool.org Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School opened in August 1993, and today has more than 350 students enrolled in grades PreK-12. Students are engaged in a rigorous liberal arts college preparatory curriculum, with all students taking several Advanced Placement courses during their upper school years. Extracurricular activities include performing and visual arts, academic and athletic competitions, field trips and clubs. Enrollment is open to all, and financial aid is available to qualified students. The school awards more than $1,000,000 in financial aid annually to approximately 50 percent of the student population. In addition, significant privately funded merit-based scholarships are available. The school has graduated more than 330 students, with virtually all enrolling in fouryear institutions immediately following graduation. The school’s classical Western civilization curriculum emphasizes study of classic texts – both modern and ancient, the humanities, foreign languages, studio and performing arts, mathematics and the sciences. Technology is fully integrated into the school’s program. A board of trustees governs the school, and the school is directed by the head of school. w

M I S S O U R I S O U T H E R N S TAT E U N I V E R S I T Y mssu.edu Founded in 1937 as a junior college, Missouri Southern State University has grown into a regional educational powerhouse with a central mission to educate and graduate knowledgeable, responsible and successful global citizens.
HIGHER EDUCATION
A comprehensive, four-year statesupported university, it offers a variety of graduate programs, NCAA Division II athletics, themed semesters and a variety of enriching cultural activities. Central to Missouri Southern’s mission is a strong commitment to international education, liberal arts and professional and pre-professional programs. The University emphasizes the complementary relationship that exists between these areas in order for students to flourish throughout their career. More than 6,000 students are pursuing degrees and certificates in nearly 140 academic programs. The start of the fall 2018 semester saw the arrival of one of the largest freshman classes on record. Academic programs are organized into four schools: the School of Arts & Sciences, the School of Education, the Robert W. Plaster School of Business and the School of Health Sciences. MSSU also offers a division of graduate studies and distance learning. MSSU is recognized as an affordable option for students looking to invest in their academic future. For the last several years, the Lion Pride Tuition program has offered in-state tuition rate to residents in Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The university recently expanded the program to include students from Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands.
While celebrating its rich past, Missouri Southern remains committed to looking toward the future. In the spring, Missouri Southern celebrated the latest addition to campus with a ribbon-cutting for Jeremiah “Jay” Nixon Hall – the new home for the mathematics department. Connected to Reynolds Hall via a skywalk, the building offers classrooms designed for collaborative and innovate learning, a computer lab, faculty offices and mathematically-themed design elements. The University also recently established the Gipson Center for Healthcare Leadership. Located within the Julio S. León Health Sciences building, the center will help meet the growing demand for graduates with the education and skills to enter into business, management and leadership roles in the health care industry. The backbone of the program will be a new degree program, the Bachelor’s of Science in Healthcare Administration, which launches in fall 2019. Other notable initiatives include: • In conjunction with the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences, MSSU offers the Yours to Lose program – allowing for advance acceptance into medical school following an innovative, three-year course of study. The first cohort of students is set to graduate in spring 2020. • The Great Game of Education is a firstof-its-kind program to give all campus employees a vested interest
in the University’s financial well-being. Utilizing the principles of open-book management, it allows all campus personnel to gain perspective on how they affect the institution’s bottom line. • Each fall, a particular country or region is selected to become the focus of intensive study – from the classroom to the cafeteria. Over the years, themed semesters have focused on China, India, Russia, Cuba, Africa, Great Britain and many others. For Fall 2019, the University will celebrate the Oceania region, which includes Australia, New Zealand, Papau-New Guinea and French Polynesia. • Study abroad opportunities offer students a unique chance to broaden their cultural horizons. In 2019 alone, students will travel to Italy, Belize, Mexico, Czechia, Germany, Norway, Spain, Portugal and Sweden on facultyled trips. Students can also choose to spend an entire semester abroad in countries such as China, England, France, Japan and the Netherlands through the International Student Exchange Program or MSSU’s bilateral agreements with universities around the world.

KANSAS CITY UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND BIOSCIENCES kcumb.edu/joplin Founded in 1916, Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences (KCU) began as one of the nation’s first colleges of osteopathic medicine and has grown to become the ninth largest medical school in the United States. In 2017, KCU opened the Farber-McIntire campus in Joplin (KCU-Joplin), marking a significant milestone in the University’s
history. KCU-Joplin was made possible through partnerships between KCU and Mercy Hospital Joplin, Freeman Health System, the City of Joplin and philanthropic leaders from Joplin and the surrounding communities. As the only medical school campus in southwest Missouri, KCU-Joplin seeks to provide educational opportunities for students who want to study and practice
medicine in the area, rather than having to relocate. As the region experiences a growing need for physicians, it’s hoped that KCU-Joplin will help provide new doctors who expand access to primary care. Currently, nearly 50 percent of KCU alumni practice in primary care specialties, with more than 50 percent serving in rural or underserved areas. KCU-Joplin’s inaugural class of 162 students began in July 2017. The College of Osteopathic Medicine will reach full enrollment in 2020, with 600 total students having matriculated. At that time, KCUJoplin will have also added approximately 100 new jobs and will provide an estimated annual economic impact of $120 million to the region. In 2019, KCU launched Score 1 for Health, a children’s preventive health screening program, at its Joplin campus. Through this program, KCU-Joplin second-year medical students, under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses, provided a variety of free health assessments for elementary school students.

WTI wti.edu The WTI Joplin campus specializes in helping students change careers, begin new careers or train for promotions. WTI, which has five campus locations in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma, is celebrating its 65-year anniversary. “We are different due to the fact we are small, student-centered, flexible and help the students by making enrollment through graduation a process where we work as one,” said campus director Linda Lynch. “We stand beside our students through the process.” The school offers programs for Computer technology and network administration; heating, air conditioning and refrigeration technology; medical assistant and pharmacy technician. WTI stays in constant contact with employers to ensure it is meeting their needs. For example, each program has its own program advisory committee made up of area employers. w

They will eventually be open to the public for educational tours, special events and historic research into Joplin’s past. East Town, just east of Joplin’s downtown, has ready access to Landreth Park, the weekly Empire Market and the independent Bookhouse Cinema. It is also hoped that the neighbors there might someday choose to somehow celebrate and feature their neighborhood’s central cultural corridor and its proximity to historic Route 66.

The development of Joplin followed the development of local industries. The southern neighborhoods provide easy access to Interstate 44 and the growing Joplin medical sector including Mercy Hospital, Freeman Hospital and the KCU Medical School. The northern neighborhoods, on the other hand, have access to plentiful retail and to Missouri Southern State University. Homes in both areas feature a range of mid-century modern, traditional and contemporary architecture.
Emerging Neighborhoods New neighborhoods are constantly coming to market and being integrated into the thriving Joplin community as excited new residents choose to make Joplin their home. Ready access to excellent schools, city parks, employers, coffee shops, running/walking trails, restaurants, shopping, golf courses and entertainment make Joplin a top place to put down roots for generations to come.

One Joplin onejoplin.com A new collaborative organization called One Joplin has been bringing neighbors, city leaders, businesses, nonprofits and public organizations together for the collective good of the community since 2015. It is led by Ashley Micklethwaite, executive director.

“One Joplin is a backbone organization which brings together many other organizations to address common concerns and make Joplin a community of neighbors,” she said. “We are working with neighborhood leaders to learn each area’s unique strengths, issues and concerns and help them figure out how to use their strengths to address the concerns,” Micklethwaite added. “In some cases we are teaching residents how to set up a social media account that they can use to connect with

their neighbors. In others, we are helping them figure out how to hold a block party or ice cream social to get neighbors to meet each other.” One Joplin has also started a “neighborhood council” to bring the leaders from many neighborhoods together to learn from each other, get tips on how to engage the city and to hear experts talk about various issues.
RESIDENTIAL LIVING
“We also try to identify an ‘anchor’ in each neighborhood and often they are churches. We have been working with the neighborhood anchors we have identified to emphasize that they need to see themselves as leaders, using their hidden connections or social capital to boost their
unique neighborhoods,” Micklethwaite said. For instance, the Joplin Public Library has been a fantastic collaborative partner, she said. They have repeatedly offered meeting space and because of their participation in collaborative groups, they have teamed up with the local school district to bring the library’s summer reading programs to neighborhoods and have been educating parents on using the evidence-based literacy app, Vroom. org, which sends daily educational tips to parents’ phones to help them participate in their children’s learning. To learn more about specific Joplin neighborhoods, visit www.onejoplin.com/neighborhoodidentification.html and click around on

C O N N E C T 2 C U LT U R E connect2culture.org Connect2Culture exists to ignite a passion for the arts, culture and entertainment in Joplin. Founded in 2009, C2C has blossomed into a multifaceted organization in a short time. Unlike any organization in Joplin, C2C is: A respected community arts agency, a visionary leader in development of a Downtown Joplin arts and entertainment complex, and a performing arts presenter.
Through social media outlets and a dynamic website, C2C promotes an astounding variety of “things to do” in the Joplin area. Most utilized resources at connect2culture.org are its calendar and arts, culture, and public art directories. The Joplin Arts & Cultural Calendar details all performances, events, exhibits and classes. (A bi-weekly e-newsletter is distributed upon request.) The calendar increases audience, avoids scheduling conflicts and facilitates coverage by local media. The Joplin Arts Directory showcases arts and cultural organizations and businesses in Joplin with links to
C2C hosts an annual series of professional development workshops, to educate, empower and connect the arts and cultural community. While topics vary, C2C Roundtables provide training in best practices, and opens lines of communication. C2C also advocates for the arts at local, state and national levels. Through participation in a recent Americans for the Arts economic impact study, the city learned the nonprofit arts and culture sector is a significant force generating $5.4 million in total economic activity. This spending supports 191 full-time equivalent jobs, generates $3.4 million in local household income and delivers $452,000 in local/state government revenue. These results show supporting the arts enhances both quality of life, and the city’s economic well-being.
C2C’s original focus in 2009 was to develop a visual and performing arts venue. Today, fundraising for the Harry M. Cornell Arts & Entertainment Complex is almost complete. Construction of The Cornell Complex will provide expanded, more suitable accommodations for Spiva Center for the Arts; a home for C2C, a 450-seat multi-functional, performance space, a 1,500-person outdoor amphitheater/festival plaza and more. It will bring major enrichment and revitalization to the heart of Joplin, and hopefully inspire people to live, work, play and stay in Joplin. Completion of this $14$16 million is expected fall 2021.
THINGS TO DO & SEE
As an arts agency, C2C provides leadership and support for more than 30 visual and performing arts entities, cultural organizations and public/private school and university programming. Preparing for future responsibilities at The Cornell Complex, C2C became a performing arts presenter in fall 2017 with the Curtains Up Series offering a diverse lineup of national touring artists. In 2017/2018 the series consisted of three shows, expanding to five in 2018/2019.

JOPLIN HISTORY AND MINERAL MUSEUM joplin-museum.org
THINGS TO DO & SEE
Since its founding in 1931, the Joplin History & Mineral Museum has become the community center for area residents and traveling visitors to learn about the historical significance of the city of Joplin and the Tri-State district. The Museum fulfills its role as an active participant in the cultural and educational community by offering a wide variety of exhibits, collections and artifacts all under one roof. It is the historical cornerstone of the city of Joplin and the leader in interpreting and preserving the rich heritage of the region.
Tri-State Ore- Everett J. Ritchie Collection

J O P L I N L I T T L E T H E AT R E joplinlittletheatre.org Joplin Little Theatre was formed in 1939 and just completed its 79th season of providing quality live theater to the Four-State area. Its first home was a former movie house with no seats or heat. Then came an auditorium on the second floor of the City Market, with a saloon on the first floor. Next, interest from the Joplin community provided the funding to purchase a stone building on the then outskirts of Joplin, which had been used as a stable for the horses of a riding academy. According to a member’s memory, “It took several months before the ‘horsey’ smell was gone.” Joplin Little Theatre is one of the few community theatres to own its own building.
JLT normally presents five shows a season (two musicals, three plays) for five performances each. It also holds a children’s summer theatre workshop, and presents a summer show targeted for family participation and attendance. A volunteer 17-member board of directors handles the operations of the Theatre and a volunteer directing staff chooses the shows. When a slate is gathered by the directing staff, it is presented to the board of directors for approval. The goal is to provide quality entertainment to theatre patrons, keeping in mind the culture of the community and the integrity of Joplin Little Theatre that has been gathered over its many years. Joplin Little Theatre depends on donations, grants and ticket sales for its support. Several fundraisers throughout the season augment its income. Over 400 productions have been staged, over 3,000 people have given their time and talents both on stage and backstage and more than 300,000 people have attended these productions. Nearly every major play and musical that has appeared on Broadway has also been presented on the Joplin Little Theatre stage.

In addition, the impressive Everett J. Ritchie Tri-State Mineral Museum interprets the geology and geochemistry of the Tri-State Mining District. The incomparable mineral specimens on display illustrate the extraordinary history and mining activity of the district. The story of Joplin is inextricably tied to the fascinating history of lead and zinc mining. The mining industry was not only the driving force of the local economy, but it also influenced language, fashion and social customs. The Joplin History & Mineral Museum is committed to preserving the past and educating future generations on the prominent history of Joplin.

EMPIRE MARKET downtownjoplin.com/joplinempiremarket Since the spring of 2018, Joplin’s Empire Market has been helping farmers within 150 miles of Joplin sell their produce and eggs and others in the area sell their bread, honey, artisan goods and even meat to Joplin residents every Saturday year-round from the former Empire District Electric Company building at 931 East 4th Street. The enterprise is overseen and administered by the Downtown Joplin Alliance, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the revitalization of the downtown community. The market is open on the first floor of the brick structure from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday, year-round. It currently houses between 20 and 25 vendors each week and is actively recruiting additional growers and vendors. All products are made or grown by the vendor. “Seventy percent of our vendors are selling food while the other 30 percent are selling artisan goods,” said Lori Haun, Executive Director of the Downtown Joplin Alliance. “It has been very well received and we are now attracting about 500 people each weekend.” They are boosting attendance at the market by holding special events once each month like a Paris-themed week and a chili cook-off and are working with other local non-profits like Wildcat Glades Friends Group and the Girl Scouts to let them hold activities of all kinds at the weekly market. Fitness classes are even being held at the Empire Market. Upcoming fun events include a summer solstice night-market in June, a Mexicanthemed Pepper Fest with a salsa-making contest in August and a Pumpkin Fest in October. “The Empire building has been great because our market is totally indoors during bad weather and it is heated during the winter,” Haun explained. “And because we are open yearround, we have several local farmers applying for and receiving assistance from the USDA to fund high tunnel greenhouses. Even without them, we are seeing farmers bringing in winter squash, onions, sprouts and eggs year-round. It is neat to watch our local farmers grow their businesses . . . and our other vendors, too. For instance, we have one person who brings elderberry syrup and gluten-free baked goods and another making lemon and lime curd.” The Downtown Joplin Alliance now has its offices in a small portion of the second floor of the 1907 Empire District Electric Company building and is leasing the rest of the office space to other businesses. They soon plan to kick off a capital campaign to update the building and grounds, build two kitchens for public and educational use, and install an elevator and other improvements for accessibility.

KEEPING FIT AND ACTIVE Joplin residents love to be active outdoors, whether they’re running, hiking, golfing (regular and disc), canoing, biking or walking. Thankfully, when the weather is less than ideal, there are plenty of indoor fitness options for them, too. Here is a look at some of the most popular ways to keep fit and active in the Joplin area:
Runners have plenty of trails to choose from and races to prepare for year-round: • Freeman Joplin Memorial Run Presented by JVM, which takes place each May in honor of the 161 lives lost when an EF5 tornado tore through Joplin on May 22, 2011. The event includes a Kids Run, 5K, 10K, half-marathon and relay. A portion of proceeds from each race goes back to the memorial and rebuilding efforts. For the first and last mile of the course, runners go past a display of 161 victim banners. (joplinmemorialrun.com) • The Joplin Turkey Trot 5K Run/Walk in Downtown Joplin, which has become a Thanksgiving morning family tradition for many and is presented by the local Starlit Running Company. • Several additional runs produced by the local Starlit Running Company, such as St. Patrick’s Day 15k and 5k, Cinco de Mayo 5K & Margarita Mile, Wizarding Run in October and the Ugly Sweater in December. • The Chilly 5k, an annual New Year’s Day race, which will be produced by locally based Rufus Racing along with the Joplin Family Y in 2020. If you’re looking for a running group, the Common Grounds club meets at the Joplin Family Y. Also, members of the Joplin Area Roadrunners compete at several events in the Tri-State area.
Biking There are plenty of trails and bike lanes in the area. For example, the Frisco Trail runs from Webb City to Joplin, nearby Carthage has many roads with bike lanes, and the Ruby Jack trail runs from Carl Junction to Carthage.

OUTDOORS On a beautiful day there’s nothing like hopping on a bike or putting on your running shoes and hitting a nearby trail, or taking the entire family to a neighborhood park. Fortunately, Joplin has plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors, either on your own or with a group of friends and/or family.
Trails Ruby Jack Trail: The former railroad line that was converted to a multi-use trail runs for 16 miles between nearby Carthage, Missouri, and the Kansas state line. The trail – which goes through the towns of Carl Junction and Oronogo – can be accessed year-round and includes impressive wildflowers during much of the year. Dogs are also welcome on the trail, as long as they are on a leash. The trail is maintained by the Joplin Trails Coalition, a volunteer group.
Frisco Greenway Trail: The trail runs for about four miles between North Street in Joplin to Highway 171 in Webb City, along the former St. Louis-San Francisco Railway property. The trail is made of firmly packed gravel and is ideal for running, walking or biking. It is also maintained by the Joplin Trails Coalition. The greenway includes plenty of foliage, making it especially appealing during the summer and fall.

COMMUNITY BUILDING
Community Building Photo credit: The Alliance of SWMO
When times get tough for families and individuals in the Joplin area, it’s comforting to know that there are organizations and volunteers that are always available to help. One example is the Building Bridges program, a partnership with the United Way of Southwest Missouri and Southeast Kansas. The program aims to break the cycle of poverty by reducing the number of families and individuals who rely on government programs and charitable aid. Building Bridges will sponsor up to 25 participants at a time who are ready to change their own lives. They learn how to find better ways to resolve conflict, live on a budget and build the skills needed for successful employment.
To make the program a success, the organization works with several area churches and organizations that provide a weekly meal, including Saint Paul’s Church, First Presbyterian Church, Freeman Health System, Mercy Health System, Commerce Bank, Southwest Missouri Bank, Rotary, Soroptimist International of Joplin and Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity. Building Bridges also partners with Arvest, Freeman Health System, Missouri Career Center, College Heights Christian Church, Missouri Southern State University and Motive Matters to provide programming to participating families. Kansas City University-Joplin medical students help provide child care to families. In the last five years, Building Bridges families have made notable progress in areas such as: • Debt relief: Several families have paid down their debts, including one that had more than $150,000 in personal debt. • Health: Participants are enjoying bike rides, runs and other forms of exercise. • Education: Several participants have returned to school, earning certificates, bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees. • Giving back: Families have participated in the United Way’s Day of Action, Joplin Area Habitat for Humanity and the Turkey Trot. Another notable nonprofit organization is The Alliance of SWMO, which aims to make the area the safest place for children to thrive.

781-7774 PROUD SUPPORTER OF THE JOPLIN EAGLES!
Established in 1998, The Alliance is one of 20 Caring Communities in the state of Missouri established by the Family and Community Trust (FACT). The organization works to build safer and healthier communities by offering education and resources for children and their families. Much of the work supported by The Alliance is in service of prevention, safety and education. The Alliance, which is headquartered in Joplin, identifies concerns, locates resources and facilitates change through community collaborations, education and prevention work in Jasper, Newton, Barton and McDonald Counties. Programs run by The Alliance include Parenting Classes, Safe Kids, Educare, Project CARE and DYS Youth Mentoring. These programs exist to prevent childhood death and injury by helping children and families in making safer choices and creating safer environments. The Alliance also supports four active community coalitions, which are charged with planning outreach and addressing gaps in the areas of youth substance use, health and safety: Joplin Area Safe Teens Coalition, Carthage Caring Community Coalition, Neosho Community Coalition and McDonald County Coalition. Recent community endeavors involving The Alliance: • Hosting the Suicide Prevention Town Hall in March 2018 after the community experienced nine youth deaths by suicide in a 12-month period. Approximately 200 people attended. The event created awareness and offered a platform for further conversation and education. • Hosting the Cyber Safety Town Hall in February 2019. Approximately 100 people attended. The event offered resources for parents and caregivers. • Distributing “bibliotherapy library” to counselors at Joplin Schools, which features a specific set of books to help counselors facilitate necessary conversations with children in crisis affected by a variety of difficult issues including abuse, suicide, divorce, etc. • Providing 260 car seats in 2018 to families unable to afford them. • Serving 2,585 youths through presentations on distracted driving under the influence since 2018. • Distributing more than 10,800 drug disposal bags since 2017. w
