completing training at the new Advanced Training and Technology Center. The Chamber’s Talent Skilled Development initiative is in place to meet current and future job requirements of area employers with high-skilled welding completers through a partnership with Crowder College in Joplin.
What’s new with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce? JACC provides economic development attraction, local business expansion and retention for the Joplin area. Success over the past year includes the opening of Ajinomoto’s $54 million capitol investment with 240 initial jobs and still growing to more than 400 the number of long-term, high-paying skill jobs. New businesses continue to increase the employment base of the community, highlighted by the dedication of ZAF Energy Systems’ 30,000 square foot facility. ZAF is a manufacturer of high grade industrial grade batteries and projects 100 jobs.
Economic impact of the new medical school is $110,000,000 and will be the centerpiece for the future of healthcare in the Joplin region.
JACC is supporting existing manufacturing companies with a 100 percent placement rate of Industrial Maintenance Technology students
The KCU School of Bioscience and Medicine completed its first year on a high note. Applications have been received for the 2018-2019 school year with another full class anticipated.
New staff continues to provide tremendous energy to programs and discussions that affect Members. The JACC is offering economic development opportunities that create wealth, longterm jobs, and millions of dollars of investments into the Joplin area. If you are a new Member, I would like to meet and introduce you to our Board members and our staff. We want to make sure you are welcomed and included. For all Members, there are numerous ways to become involved. We particularly value your input and advice within committees. All members are welcome to attend and
join in these discussions. The committees often identify issues that need work or offer creative ideas to improve our programs and events, which become policies for our advocacy. Your Chamber provides Member investors with numerous opportunities to grow and develop your business or organization. Fresh leadership development initiatives have begun for Member investors of all age groups. Whether it is one of our many networking events, targeted marketing

he Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce continues to be one of the premier chambers of commerce in the United States. In 2018 JACC received its third consecutive 5-Star Accreditation for five years from the US Chamber of Commerce, the maximum number of years allowable. Essentially, what that means to Members and the region is the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce is identified by its accrediting body as one of the top 1% of chambers in the United States. We appreciate the dedication of Board members and staff that completed the many hours to develop the accreditation document. Members are assured that programs and initiatives offered through the organization are topflight and evaluated by a group of its peers. It means that the procedures and policies are maintained and evaluated at the highest level. It means that the member investors continue to support the activities and the impact of the Chamber.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: CHAMBER 2.0
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CHAMBER 2.0
Re-energized for the future.
I
n 2017, the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated its 100th anniversary. Your Chamber is now entering its second century with more focus on being an investor-driven, business-focused organization. We like to call it Chamber 2.0, new and improved. What can you expect to see? First, the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce is an investor-supported and investor-driven organization. What that means is that members are the core investors that allow the Chamber to operate on behalf of the business community. In addition, the Chamber has investors who support economic development, workforce development and community and regional growth initiatives. Investors support the organization and, in turn, provide the key directions your Chamber is pursuing to improve our area. One of those directions is workforce development and talent recruitment. Our members tell us they need a well-trained, skilled labor pool in addition to up-andcoming new leaders. The Advanced Training and Technology Center (ATTC), several years in the making, is now open for business and provides easy access to affordable training in advanced welding, advanced manufacturing, information technology and other skills people need to obtain good jobs, in turn helping companies be successful. Apprenticeship programs are also underway with more in development stages. In addition, the ATTC has a well-appointed culinary kitchen and incubator space to help develop new companies, enhancing the efforts that have been underway at the Newman Innovation Center for more than a decade. The Chamber staff and board are also looking at new services to help members with their workforce needs. One of those in the area of talent recruitment is focused on outreach to people who
10
may be attracted to our area for jobs and quality of living, and more specifically people transitioning out of the military. Initial response to our “Welcome Home to Joplin” campaign is positive from everyone who has seen it and a number of national organizations have indicated they believe it is a unique effort to help our area firms, as well as grow the broader community. What remains the same? We remain a 5-Star Chamber serving the Joplin area business community. Yes, your Chamber received 5-Star accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce for the third consecutive time: 2007, 2012 and in 2017. This means your Chamber is one of the 2 percent of chambers across the nation with the prestigious distinction, and is one of only 3 percent of the nation’s approximately 7,000 chambers to hold any level of accreditation with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This accreditation validates that the Joplin Area Chamber has financial and personnel policies that meet the highest standard, offers programs that meet members’ needs, and engages in continuous education for its staff. We are not resting on our laurels, but the 5-Star accreditation means we continually strive to improve the organization.
What is in the future for your Chamber? Currently we are searching for a new president. Yes, after 23 years of dedication to the Joplin Area Chamber and the Joplin regional community, Rob O’Brian decided to retire to pursue new endeavors that he, and we, hope will continue to benefit our area. So this year is one of transition as our Board searches for new top leadership to take your Chamber to the next level. However, the Chamber has a professional staff that collectively has more than 120 years of chamber experience to carry on the mission. The Chamber team is fired up to see what our future holds in our second century. Just like your 2.0 Chamber moving from one century and beginning the next, many of our businesses are also celebrating milestones in their businesses. This edition of our Community Profile showcases some of our members that have some great histories to share. We hope you enjoy their stories because they are a part of the fabric that makes Joplin and the area a great place to learn, work, play and live. n

newtonsjoplin.com Newton’s Jewelry has played an integral part in the business community of Joplin since it first opened its doors at Fifth and Main in 1939. The store’s founder and family’s patriarch, George Henry “G.H.” Newton, opened his first jewelry store in McAlester, Oklahoma, in 1914 and over the next 50 or 60 years the family expanded into all four of the surrounding states, having a total of 16 stores at one time. In fact, there were four Newton-owned jewelry stores in Joplin alone by the early 1970s – two with the Newton name, one called Zinn’s and one called McKee’s. G.H.’s grand plan was to be able to pass on the stores to his four sons – one son per state. “Bunny” Newton received the stores in Joplin.

Operating today is the original Joplin store, now owned and run by Bunny’s wife, Jane, and their son, Brian. The Joplin store specializes in unique pieces of jewelry that are custom-made in-house or made by small mom-and-pop production companies. Nothing is mass-produced because Brian is well aware that women don’t want to see someone else wearing the same jewelry as they are. Newton’s also buys and re-sells estate jewelry and Brian, like his father before him, travels the world to acquire high-quality gems, gold and pearls. Newton’s is also well-known for being a full-service jewelry repair facility that handles all kinds of repairs in-house. ›

R.E. SMITH CONSTRUCTION CO. resmithconst.com BUSINESS & INDUSTRY
R.E. Smith Construction Co. is one of the premier general contracting firms in the Four-State Area, specializing in industrial, retail, educational, civic, medical and recreational construction since its founding by Richard E. Smith in 1952. And over the years it has literally changed the face of Joplin. For instance, it recently completed the new $14.3 million Joplin Public Library at 20th and Connecticut and had also built the library’s immediate predecessor at 4th and Main. The Smiths have also been actively involved in construction at Missouri Southern State University, and they are
credited with building over a dozen of the institution’s projects, including a recently-completed dormitory and the Stadium Support Facility, as well as a number of structures on the campus of Ozark Christian College.

In addition, R.E. Smith Construction was the contractor for the Schifferdecker Aquatic Center, as well as on earlier projects like the Cunningham and Ewert Pools, the Joplin Family YMCA, the Salvation Army Thrift Store, two Joplin fire stations, approximately 12 public schools, several local churches and is currently building the new Senior Citizens Center, adjacent to the new Mercy Park which they completed last year. Today the firm is owned by Richard Smith’s sons, Dick Smith (president) and Dave Smith (vice president).

LAKELAND OFFICE SYSTEMS lakelandoffice.com Lakeland Office Systems has been growing by leaps and bounds. Founded in 1985 by two former Xerox technicians, Lakeland has become one of the largest locallyowned and independently-operated Office Equipment Solutions companies in the Four States region. It had a whirlwind of a year in 2017 with the acquisition of Inland Printing Company (the longest standing Canon dealer in Missouri with offices in Springfield and West Plains) and Osborn Paper Company, Joplin’s oldest industrial paper, packaging and janitorial company. Osborn was founded by Sylvester Osborn in 1895 when he couldn’t find the proper paper to wrap mercantile goods at his local feed store. “My brother, John, and I felt that acquiring these two companies was a way for us to diversify our products and geographical reach and also to help solidify our market share in Springfield,” said David Tyson, executive vice president. Lakeland already sold Canon, Sharp and Lexmark copiers and printers, as well as related document management software. The Tysons also recently opened a new 17,000-square-foot office technology center in Joplin and plan to add another 5,000 square feet to it so that Osborn can be integrated into the facility. “We pride ourselves in working with companies throughout the Four-State area to deliver the best-in-class business solutions—from small desktop printers to large production presses, or basic network services up to fully custom and automated document solutions, and everything in between,” Tyson explained. “We also have a long-standing reputation for offering the fastest on-site response times.”
Proud to support the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce.
Osborn Paper Company is one of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce’s oldest continuous members, joining in 1941. Lakeland Office Systems joined the local Chamber in 1988. The combined company employs over 50 people, manages over 7,500 copiers and printer devices, and has two sales teams to handle their diverse product lines. n w w w. jop linc c .c om

environmentally friendly batteries for a variety of uses, opened with 30 people and will grow to over 100. One of the Newman Innovation Center graduates, Automated Technology Company, is growing in its new location downtown. ATC, which fully automates all building systems, expects to grow from its 25 employees to more than 100 in the next two years.
INNOVATION CENTRAL
MEDICAL BUZZ Kansas City University’s Joplin medical school opened its doors to its first class of medical students in July 2017. As it goes into its second year, KCU – Joplin is rapidly gaining attention as a leading, state-of the-art equipped, premier faculty-led school across the Midwest. The school is predicted to have a $100 million impact on the area when it reaches its full 600 student level. It is the first new medical school opened in the state in more than four decades.
READY FOR BUSINESS In 2016, the Joplin area became the first three-state, multi-county region in the U.S. to be certified work-ready by ACT. Barton, Jasper and Newton counties in Missouri; Cherokee, Crawford and Labette counties in Kansas; and Ottawa County in Oklahoma make up the region. All these counties are working toward recertification in 2017. Certification ensures our community is armed with the skills and tools to succeed in today’s economic environment.
The all-new Advanced Training & Technology Center (ATTC) is a multipurpose facility owned and managed by the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Education, business assistance and job creation, specifically targeting low-tomoderate income levels, are the primary missions of the facility. Contracted partners, including Crowder College, Workforce Innovation Board and the Joseph Newman Innovation Center, will operate programs to help fill gaps in the area’s workforce by providing higher-skilled workers to existing and new companies. In fall 2017, students began taking classes in advanced manufacturing technology, advanced welding, drafting, information technology and computer network support. In the near future
community health programs will get underway adding to the area’s support for the health care sector. Another stellar resource for local entrepreneurs is the Joseph Newman Innovation Center, which has helped create nearly 500 jobs since opening in 2005. The center currently is home to 13 businesses and continues to offer outreach and counseling to startup businesses and entrepreneurs. In partnership with the Innovation Center, Missouri Southern State University opened the region’s only DNA lab, which offers training workshops to industries on the use of the technology and helps introduce existing industries to the technology for food safety testing. For students, the DNA lab offers a centralized location for DNA research.
CHAMBER CHAMPS Your Chamber keeps you informed about issues that affect your business and our community and offers legitimate programs that put members in touch with legislators. Your Chamber’s membership in the Chamber Federation gives members with 10 or fewer employees a free membership in the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which helps the smallest of businesses stay informed about legislative items that affect business. n
BUSINESS GROWTH Ajinomoto opened a $5-million, 240 employee facility in early 2018, adding to the food processing sector in Joplin. The plant is expected to grow to nearly 400 employees in the next few years. ZAF Energy Systems, a producer of unique, 16

he Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce’s (JACC) Economic & Workforce Development efforts include local and regional initiatives to improve economic prosperity in Joplin and throughout the area. From influencing public policy on behalf of the business community, to leading task forces designed to improve infrastructure and encourage technologyoriented startups, developing Southwest Missouri is a core focus at JACC.
AFFILIATED ORGANIZATIONS The Chamber is affiliated with a number of organizations, subsidiary corporations and partnerships aimed at growing the region. Our key affiliate is The Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, which supports and promotes educational, cultural and job creation programs and projects. The Foundation supports educational programs such as Tomorrow’s Leaders Today, Leadership Joplin and the Young Professionals Network. The Foundation oversees the Newman Innovation Center and the Advanced Training & Technology Center, both of which offer space for emerging and small firms to grow and, at the ATTC, where area residents can receive training in advanced job skills. Chamber staff members also overlap as staff for a variety of these affiliate organizations, including the Joplin Regional Partnership (formerly the Joplin Business & Industrial Development Corporation) and Joplin Capital Corporation (JCC). The Regional Partnership provides revenue sources to support the economic and workforce development efforts in the seven-county Joplin region, a unique three state effort. The JCC furnishes small business loans and/or equity for projects that would not be financed through conventional means. JACC staff also supports efforts specific to Joplin. The Joplin Industrial Development Authority, operated by Chamber staff, developed and markets the Crossroads Business Park as well as maintaining the Joplin-Webb City Industrial Park. The Joseph Newman Innovation Center (NIC), as noted is run by the Chamber Foundation. The NIC provides a positive environment for entrepreneurs and the development of innovative new businesses. The NIC’s office space and shared amenities such as a reception area, conference rooms, break rooms and telecommunications infrastructure, provide a professional atmosphere for focusing on your new business without the risk of having to sign a long-term lease agreement. Located downtown, the NIC blends accessibility with a professional, urban atmosphere. Perhaps even more beneficial than the space itself is the network of business experts who can be accessed through connections at the center. Businesses of all types can benefit from the expertise of the Joplin team, which includes Innovation Center staff, JACC staff, the Small Business and Technology Development Center at Missouri Southern State University, and other statewide development agencies. Access to these resources is not restricted to the NIC’s tenants, and these partners are prepared to assist in solving problems ranging from financing, management and relocations to research and manufacturing processes. Since 2005, the NIC has assisted over 30 tenants as they created nearly 500 new jobs, and the NIC’s outreach programs have helped hundreds more within the region. All assistance programs are provided free of charge. Contact Loni Smith at (417) 624-4150 or loni@joplincc.com for more information about the NIC and its offerings.

by HUD, the Foundation acquired a 51,000 sq. ft. building used by Franklin Tech after Joplin’s tornado in 2011. The space was renovated in some areas and upgraded in others to create a mixed use training, incubator and community facility. Crowder uses nearly 30,000 sq. ft. of the space for training in advanced manufacturing and IT skills, training that is very skills-based and allows people to move up in their current employment or move to a better job within months. The facility has incubator space for small startups and has a full, culinary kitchen for catering and food product entrepreneurs. The WIB provides pre-apprenticeship training on basic job skills for people just getting into or returning to the work world, with a focus on homeless and lowincome citizens who need a hand up to get back into jobs. There is also space for community meetings and training. For more information contact Loni Smith at (417) 624-4150 or loni@joplincc.com. n

The Location for Logistics
I
f it needs to be shipped – and everything does – there’s a good chance it’s passed through or close to Joplin. Three Class 1 railroads and two regional short-lines join trucking, rail, air and port concerns to ensure that when shipments need to get somewhere, they get there fast. Close to 6 million Americans are a mere 150 miles from Joplin’s interstate crossroads, and 65 million are within an easy day’s drive. Interstates 44 and 49 provide ultimate access – East Coast to West Coast and Canada to Mexico – while a network of state and federal highways provides unfettered access to the reaches of the four-state area of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. The city’s four industrial parks – Joplin Southern Industrial Park, Crossroads Business and Distribution Park, Joplin/ Webb City Industrial Park and Joplin Airpark – provide ample goods for more than 50 local trucking firms. Additionally, Contract Freighters, Inc. (CFI) is headquartered in Joplin, and TriState Motor Transit handles potentially dangerous freight. It’s an easy drive to Tulsa’s Port of Catoosa, one of the largest, farthest-inland river ports in the United States. In addition to Kansas City Southern, Burlington Northern-Santa Fe and Union Pacific, the regional short-line Missouri
Airport
Northern Arkansas Railroad – part of the Genesee & Wyoming system – is headquartered in nearby Carthage and operates nearly 600 miles of line in Arkansas and Missouri. MNA traffic generally consists of coal, grain, frozen foods, minerals, steel, chemicals and asphalt on 527 miles of line. (The line was initially chartered in 1883 and was part of the Missouri Pacific Railroad’s mainline from Kansas City to Memphis.) WATCO, one of the largest short-line railroads in the United States, offers direct service to its own port in Houston. Rail lines such as these, along with Joplin’s motor freight capability, connect
Missouri shipments to ports of import and export on the Gulf and Atlantic Ocean. The city is also home to Joplin Regional Airport (see facing page). A further trio – Springfield Regional, Northwest Arkansas and Tulsa International – are all within 60 to 90 minutes. Whether your need is Local Cartage, Over-the-Road Trucking, 3rd Party Logistics, Warehousing, Manufacturing, Rail or Air Transportation, Joplin can be the hub for your needs.

HEALTHCARE
Mercy Hospital Joplin mercy.net For more than a century, Mercy Hospital Joplin has served the health care needs of the four-state area. In 1896, the Sisters of Mercy arrived with hopes of opening schools, but the need for health care was a priority because many miners working in the Joplin area needed access to a hospital. The Sisters were ambitious and started several small schools, in addition to opening Mercy Hospital. The hospital grew over the years. In 1968, the Sisters opened St. John’s Regional Medical Center, which was licensed for 367 beds. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by the May 22, 2011 tornado. Today’s Mercy Hospital Joplin is a new, technologically advanced, 240-bed hospital with adjoining clinic/physician office space on a 100-acre campus along Interstate 44. The 900,000-square-foot, $435 million hospital is eight stories with room for expansion and unprecedented storm-hardening features. Mercy Hospital Joplin has received numerous accolades over the years. Most recently, the hospital has earned recognition from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization, as the only Top General Hospital in Missouri and one of only 45 Top General Hospitals nationwide. Mercy not only excels in patient safety, service and quality, but also is a leader in bringing the most-advanced technology to Joplin to care for patients. Research shows 3-D mammography detects cancer earlier. Mercy Hospital Joplin offers patients automated breast ultrasound system as a supplement to mammography for women with dense breast tissue. By pairing the two, Mercy Breast Center is able to better detect small cancers that may not be seen on a mammogram alone. The center has received accreditation 30
from the American College of Surgeons acknowledging Mercy’s commitment to providing the highest quality evaluation and management of patients with breast disease. With robotic surgery at Mercy Hospital Joplin, patients experience less pain, have fewer complications and benefit from faster recovery time. These are also outpatient procedures and do not require a hospital stay. Unlike open surgeries that require large incisions, robotic-assisted procedures use a number of small incisions usually .5 to 1.5 centimeters long. During these procedures, a thin tube with a camera provides a high-resolution, 3-D image of the surgical site. Through the tiny incisions, the surgeon inserts surgical instruments attached to robotic arms. The robotic “wrists” can rotate 360 degrees and move in tiny increments, providing greater surgical precision and improved access to hard-to-reach areas. Sometimes it’s an everyday challenge to manage a healthy lifestyle. A Mercy program called Engagement@Home is doing wonders for patients with multiple and complicated medical conditions, such as those with congestive heart failure, to keep them well and reduce their need for hospitalization. Mercy’s virtual health care providers keep a close “medical eye” on the patient’s vitals through a secure internet connection, a tablet and wireless monitoring equipment. Each day, the patient can easily monitor weight, pulse, oxygen levels and blood pressure on devices that link to the tablet. Readings alert the Mercy Virtual Care Center team to sudden changes so they can reach out to the patient to see what’s happening and make tweaks to medication or make simple suggestions to help the patient.
The program can decrease their medical costs and increase quality of life. Since launching Engagement@Home as a pilot program in 2016, results show a 50 percent reduction in emergency department visits and a 50 percent reduction in hospital readmissions. The experts at the Mercy Bariatric Center specialize in obesity, its causes, prevention and treatments. Bariatric surgery is divided into two different approaches to helping treat obesity: restrictive, where the stomach’s size and capacity are reduced; and malabsorption, where the stomach’s ability to absorb calories and nutrients is reduced. Mercy provides a variety of bariatric procedures including gastric sleeve, gastric banding and gastric bypass. In addition to partnering with the patient’s primary care physician, Mercy utilizes psychologists, dietitians, physical therapists, cardiologists, pulmonologists and surgeons to ensure the patient’s success. Find out more about Mercy Joplin by visiting mercy.net. n

Freeman Health System freemanhealth.com Freeman Health System continues its 93 years of rich heritage in delivering exceptional, quality health care to Joplin and its surrounding communities. As a testament to the ongoing dedication of Freeman to quality care and patient safety, Freeman was again recognized with more distinctions, including almost 100 separate categories from CareChex – a quality rating system that helps consumers make decisions about where to obtain their health care. Among other accolades, Freeman received two awards from the American Heart Association: Mission Lifeline Silver Plus and Silver Level for Workplace Health Achievement. The Leapfrog Group again awarded an “A” grade to Freeman for patient safety and quality and named it a Top Teaching Hospital. The Freeman Bariatric Center earned accreditation as a Comprehensive Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, a joint program of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. The first and only comprehensive bariatric program in the area to be accredited within a 100-mile radius, Freeman Bariatric Center meets the highest standards for patient safety and quality of care.
Freeman Cornell-Beshore Cancer Institute is one of only four practices in Missouri to be recognized by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) Certification Program, an affiliate of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The QOPI Certification Program provides a three-year certification for outpatient hematology-oncology practices that meet the highest standards for quality cancer care. Freeman Radiation Oncology now offers Optune, a treatment for newly diagnosed and recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), an aggressive form of brain cancer. According to the American Brain Tumor Association, more than 12,000 individuals in the U.S. will be affected by GBM this year. Freeman became the first and only local hospital to offer high-dose rate brachytherapy, a form of radiation therapy that enables doctors to deliver higher doses of radiation to specific areas of the entire body by placing radioactive sources inside the tumor cavity. Additionally, new service lines were launched this year, including one for osteoporosis, spinal care and Freeman First Care that helps individuals and employers get established with a primary care provider and can assist with referrals to specialists as needed. Freeman Heart & Vascular Institute performed the first transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedures in the area and opened its Structural Heart program. The minimally invasive technique gives hope to patients who suffer from severe
32
aortic stenosis, but who are not ideal candidates for a complex open heart surgery. Freeman held a ribbon cutting ceremony at Freeman Neosho Hospital to celebrate the completion of a project to expand computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging services. The project is the largest at the Neosho campus since 1983. The addition was named the Larry D. Neff CT-MRI Suite after Larry D. Neff, who passed away in May 2016. Neff served as chairman of the Freeman Neosho Board of Directors and was an 18-year member of the Freeman Health System Board of Directors. Also in Neosho, Freeman Neosho Rehabilitation Services was recognized by Focus on Therapeutic Outcomes, Inc. with an outcomes excellence award for orthopaedic rehab. Ozark Center recently opened a new location with all adult psychiatric services now under one roof. The center program is known as HOPE Spring – Healing, Overcoming, Persevering and Empowering. In addition, a new opioid clinic for assessment and treatment opened recently. Another clinic that opened this year under Ozark Center is a walk-in clinic, where patients can be seen the same day and/or with less waiting. Additionally, Ozark has a new eating disorders treatment team in place to provide family-based treatment and interpersonal psychotherapy for eating disorders. n

Ronald McDonald House rmhjoplin.org Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Four States creates, finds and supports programs that directly support the health and well-being of children and their families. The charity operates the only worldwide service of its kind through two programs. Ronald McDonald House of the Four States opened its doors on July 27, 1998. Ronald McDonald House celebrates 20 years of serving families of seriously ill children and ill expectant mothers being treated at Freeman Health System and Mercy Hospital Joplin. Twenty-four hours
per day, seven days a week the 14,000-square-foot facility located at 3402 S. Jackson in Joplin, Missouri, offers families a home away from home, the support of other families experiencing the same circumstances and the comfort and care provided by staff and over 140 volunteers. Ronald McDonald Family Room opened Nov. 13, 2017, in Mercy Hospital Joplin. When a child is critically ill, parents
needs a break from the ongoing stress of beeping monitors and busy intensive care units. The 850-square-foot room, located on the sixth floor of Mercy Hospital, offers families a place of respite, relaxation and privacy just steps away from their child’s bedside. Services are available to families of pediatric patients from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. n

Orthopaedic Specialists of the Four States ortho4states.com Orthopaedic Specialists of the Four States (Ortho Four States) is the largest and most comprehensive neck-to-toe orthopedic and sports medicine care group and facility in the Four State Area, providing a compassionate, patient-centered approach to worldclass orthopedic care, according to Joe Caputo, Chief Executive Officer of the 11-physician care group. Ortho Four States has a large patient care campus in Galena, Kansas which includes a 36-bed hospital, HydroWorx therapy pools in a nationally recognized rehabilitation center, an ambulatory surgery center, a pharmacy and a variety of other physician offices for other specialties. Ortho Four States also offers satellite offices in Pittsburg, Kansas; Fort Scott, Kansas; Carthage, Missouri; Grove, Oklahoma; and Bentonville, Arkansas. The primary service area for Ortho Four States extends in a 60 to 70-mile radius of Galena, an area that boasts a population of approximately 450,000, according to Caputo. The roots of Ortho Four States can be traced back 11 years to when a group of fellowshiptrained and board-certified orthopedic physicians and surgeons formed a medical practice in Joplin in January 2007. Three years later, in 2010, they opened a medical office and ambulatory surgery center across the state line in Galena, Kansas, where insurance regulations were less restrictive and where large pieces of medical equipment and facilities could be purchased and/ or built without having to obtain a “Certificate of Need,” as is required in Missouri, Caputo said.
36
“We wanted to deliver a level of quality and service to our patients unlike anything being offered in the Four State Area and we knew that we could do that better if we were operating on our own,” he added. “We also wanted to deliver the whole continuum of orthopedic and spine care on our campus.” From medical treatments and physical therapy, to non-surgical and minimally invasive procedures, to the most challenging musculoskeletal surgeries, Ortho Four States serves those needing treatment for accidents, injuries, sports medicine, athletic training, physical therapy, joint replacement and revision, bone health, medical conditions, pain management, disease processes and infection. “Our doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists and physical therapy assistants work together to provide patients and their families with individually-created care plans, targeted at correcting and eliminating the pain and suffering caused by injuries and disorders of the spine and joints,” Caputo said. In 2013 the orthopedic group partnered with the City of Galena to open Premier Surgical Institute, a general acute care hospital that accommodates a variety of surgical specialties including orthopedic surgery, gastroenterology, urology, general surgery, and ear-nose-throat (ENT) surgery just to name a few. Premier Surgical Institute does not, however, offer an emergency room or intensive care unit services. “A section of the Affordable Care Act prohibited physicians from owning the operations of hospitals. So we ended up partnering with the City of Galena, which actually owns the operations of the hospital,” Caputo explained. “In addition to Premier Surgical Institute, our physicians also have privileges at Stateline Surgery Center in Galena, Kansas, Mercy Hospital in Carthage, Missouri, Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas and Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville, Arkansas.”
In fact, many Ortho Four States physicians grew up in the Joplin area and returned home after training and working their residency in larger cities around the country. “While away, Ortho Four States’ doctors not only acquired advanced medical and surgical techniques, but identified various ways to best care for their patients. Each with their own area of orthopedic specialty, Ortho Four States physician-architects came together to collectively forge a master plan to build Ortho Four States’ patient-centered practice and orthopedic facilities,” Caputo said. Premier Surgical Institute has been recognized with impressive awards recently. In 2016 the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) awarded Premier Surgical Institute their highest rating – five stars. The National Research Corporation named Premier Surgical Institute a top “patient-centered care” performer among hospitals with less than 100 beds in both 2015 and 2016, and, in early 2017, Becker’s Hospital Review honored Premier Surgical Institute for receiving Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores in the 90th percentile. Premier Surgical Institute is one of 57 hospitals in the country to earn this prestigious recognition with 90 percent or more of patients giving them an overall care rating of nine or 10 on the patients’ HCAHPS survey. Premier Surgical Institute has won the Spine Surgery Excellence Award two years in a row in 2017 and 2018, and was named among the top 5% in the Nation for Spine Surgery in 2017 and 2018. Additionally, the hospital is a Five-Star recipient for Total Knee Replacement, Total Hip Replacement and Spinal Fusion Surgery in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Ortho Four States also prides itself on helping patients navigate the complex insurance and health care system. Ortho Four States accepts most insurance plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield and many Freeman and Mercy directed plans. n

Hometown Pediatrics of Joplin LLC HEALTHCARE
joplinhometownpeds.com Hometown Pediatrics of Joplin LLC is literally a labor of love for Dr. Shari Smith and her two nurse practitioners, Stephanie Stewart and Jill Blair. All three were born and raised in Joplin and they have made it their mission to make a difference in the lives of the community’s young people and to help them grow into happy, healthy and good young adults. The practice opened in late 2014 and it grew so fast they found they needed to build a larger building, which opened October 2017. The new location is at 200 Castle Drive in Joplin, next door to All Aboard Ice Cream. Dr. Smith was trained as an osteopathic pediatrician, which means she takes a whole person approach to treating her patients, taking the emotional health of each patient into consideration along with their physical health. Stewart and Blair follow suit. Hometown Pediatrics is also a faithbased practice. “This is our mission, not our job,” she said. “Stephanie and I had been practicing together for 10 years before we opened this practice together. We wanted a place that felt personal, comfortable, happy and safe to our patients and their parents. So we gave the office a homey, family feeling, not a sterile one, by incorporating old church benches from a church in Oklahoma and providing lots of activities for the patients. “We are so happy with how it has turned out,” Dr. Smith said. We all have our own children of varying ages, so we understand how the parents feel.” That is why they adopted the slogan of “Our family taking care of your family.” “And we all appreciate one another. All of our jobs are important and we all know that. So if there is a problem, we will all pitch in to help,” Dr. Smith added. n

Children’s Mercy Kansas City childrensmercy.org Children with specialized medical issues may receive diagnosis and care closer to home than ever before. Children’s Mercy Kansas City, the premier pediatric hospital in the region, has been serving the Joplin region since 2014. In a unique collaboration with Freeman Health Systems, Children’s Mercy has been working with family practitioners to bring pediatricians with world-class expertise in subspecialty care, according to Marshaun Butler, vice president.
4130 MAIN <> JOPLIN, MO
The clinic, located at 3333 McIntosh Circle Drive, offers rotating sub-specialty clinics in seven specialties – cardiology, endocrinology/diabetes, oncology, hematology, gastroenterology, nephrology and plastic surgery and an additional 20 sub-specialties via telemedicine. Children’s Kansas City, as the clinic is called, currently features five exam rooms and core care teams who assist the many specialists who rotate through the clinic each month, as well as the pediatric gastroenterologist who practices at the clinic full-time. Some specialists bring an entire team of support staff with them on each rotation, while others receive support from the onsite staff in Joplin, Butler said. Once a child has been diagnosed, the physicians and parents coordinate a care plan. If complicated surgery is indicated or long-term support is needed, the patients are considered for transfer to Children’s Mercy’s 314-bed hospital in Kansas City. Parents are also sometimes given the option of having the surgery done locally. “It is handled on a case-by-case basis,” Butler said.

“We generally like to be invited into an area to collaborate with and complement the general pediatricians already practicing there,” Butler added. “We step in where there is a gap in specialty service and where patients and their parents would otherwise have to travel long distances to reach pediatric specialists. We like to say that we offer world-class care, close to home.” The reaction of Joplin parents and grandparents to Children’s Mercy coming to Joplin to treat children in southwestern Missouri and southeastern Kansas has been very positive. “They are so happy that we are in their community so that they can make appointments in their own backyard. It really reduces the burden of having to travel 150 miles to Kansas City, potentially incurring the expense of a hotel room, taking time off of work and taking their children out of school.”

U.S News and World Report has named Children’s Mercy Kansas City as one of the nation’s best children’s hospitals with rankings in 10 specialties, according to Butler. It is also the only hospital in Missouri or Kansas to earn Magnet designation for nursing excellence four consecutive times, and is one of just eight hospitals, pediatric or adult, in both states to achieve this milestone from the Magnet Recognition Program®. Children’s Mercy earned Magnet designation in 2003, 2007, 2012 and 2016. n

Students are engaged in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, with all students taking several Advanced Placement courses during their upper school years. Extracurricular activities include performing and visual arts, academic and athletic competitions, field trips and clubs.
The school has graduated more than 375 students, with 100 percent of them enrolling in four-year institutions immediately following graduation. n
Martin Luther Christian School is an accredited early education, elementary, and middle school located at 26th & Connecticut in Joplin. The school educates students from preschool through eighth grade. It provides whole child education, linking curriculum to the real world, helping students become problem solvers, good stewards and active citizens.
Mother Catherine McAuley’s Sisters of Mercy founded St. Peter’s School in Joplin in 1885. JACS continues this tradition of faithful Catholic education in her spirit.
The early childhood center features a flexible schedule for families, along with new classrooms that are also safe rooms in the event of inclement weather. The school offers half-day and full-day kindergarten and first through eighth grades. Class sizes are limited, which means there is a low student-to-teacher ratio. Parents can call the school to set up an Educational Success Consultation.
THOMAS JEFFERSON INDEPENDENT DAY SCHOOL tjeffschool.org The school, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, was the vision of a group of Joplin parents who were determined to provide an excellent educational experience to prepare their children for college and life.
Joplin Area Catholic Schools provide Catholic and non-Catholic students with a strong academic and Catholic faith foundation. Focusing on educational and social skills needed to be active, productive members of the community and Church, we teach students to integrate Christian values into all aspects of life so they will be effective witnesses to the presence of Christ in the world.

Pittsburg State University pittstate.edu Pittsburg State University, which was founded in 1903 as the State Manual Training Normal School Auxiliary, is a comprehensive state university with more than 150 degree programs and more than 6,900 students from across the United States and around the globe. PSU offers accredited bachelor’s and master’s degrees in many areas, as well as a doctoral degree in nursing practice. U.S. News & World Report consistently includes the university in its “Best in the Midwest” list of colleges and universities and a number of PSU’s academic programs are nationally ranked. Pitt State is organized into four colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the Kelce College of Business, the College of Education and the College of Technology. The College of Arts and Sciences includes a wide array of programs ranging from art, music and communication to nursing, biology, chemistry and physics. For instance, the University’s pre-professional programs, including pre-medicine, have a reputation for high placement rates in professional institutions and the Irene Ransom Bradley School of Nursing has graduated bachelor’s and master’s degree nurses to serve the region for more than 45 years. The school recently added a doctoral program in nursing practice. In addition, the College launched a polymer chemistry initiative in 2014 and today PSU offers the only bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in polymer chemistry in the region. Even undergraduates are initiating important polymer research and getting it published in respected journals. Nearly a dozen researchers from around the world are also housed in the Kansas Polymer Research Center where they partner with 44
industry to develop groundbreaking bio-based resources for industrial applications using everything from orange peels to soybean oil. The Kelce College of Business has developed a reputation for both high academic standards and successful graduates. The Princeton Review lists the college as third among “FamilyFriendly” schools and it is included on The Princeton Review’s list of the “Best 294 Business Schools.” The College of Education traces its roots to the university’s early days, and Pitt State grads can be found making a difference in students’ lives in school classrooms and administrative posts throughout the Four-State Region and across the country. The College of Education serves students in three departments: health, human performance and recreation; psychology and counseling; and teaching and leadership. Finally, located in the Kansas Technology Center, the university’s College of Technology encompasses 15 degree programs, many of which are nationally recognized. Departments include automotive technology, engineering technology, graphics and imaging technologies, the school of construction and technology and workforce learning.
The 278,000-square-foot Kansas Technology Center provides space for scores of labs where students work with the latest technology available to industry. Much of that technology is in place because of strong ties between the College of Technology and hundreds of industry partners around the world. From the earliest days, the University, the community and alumni have benefited from strong partnerships. The Kansas Technology Center, the Student Recreation Center, the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts, the Tyler Research Center and the Plaster Indoor Event Center are just some of the projects that relied on a mixture of private and public support. This year, the University, City and private investors are working together to renovate and repurpose four historic buildings in downtown Pittsburg. Pitt State also has a big impact on the cultural life of the local community and the region. Each year, tens of thousands of people throughout the Four-State Area attend concerts, theatrical productions, addresses by internationally-known speakers, sporting events and gallery exhibits. Many are free to the public. n

Missouri Southern State University mssu.edu Missouri Southern State University is a regional educational powerhouse that prepares graduates to play an active role in the global economy. Missouri Southern, which has been in Joplin since 1937, started as a junior college. It now is a comprehensive fouryear state-supported institution, offering NCAA Division II athletics, themed semesters, enriching cultural events in theater, art, music and film and much more. “Our thinking is global,” said Cassie Mathes, director of university relations & marketing. “As a university, we know we have the power to make a difference in the lives of our students and people in our region, nation and the world.” Central to the MSSU mission is a strong commitment to international education, liberal arts, professional and pre-professional programs and the complementary relationship that must exist among them to prepare individuals for success in careers and lifelong learning.

More than 6,000 students are pursuing degrees and certificates in nearly 140 different academic programs, both undergraduate and graduate. The University’s academic programs are organized into four schools: the School of Arts & Sciences, School of Education, Robert W. Plaster School of Business and the School of Health Sciences. MSSU also offers a division of graduate studies and distance learning. 46
For the last several years, MSSU’s affordable in-state tuition rate has also been offered to residents of several other states through the Lion Pride Tuition program. This means students in Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas can also take advantage of the in-state tuition rate. Missouri Southern is building for the future as well. Construction is underway on Nixon Hall, which will serve as the new home for the University’s mathematics program. The 20,000-square-foot, three-story building will be on the south side of Reynolds Hall and connected via a skywalk to the main hall of Reynolds’ second floor. It will house mathematics classrooms, faculty offices, a computer lab and student study areas. The $8.1 million construction project is scheduled for completion in time for the start of the spring 2019 semester. Other notable initiatives at MSSU include: • The new Master of Science in Management program, which continues to thrive. Enrollment for the program, which offers human resource and general management tracks, has grown by more than 45 percent in the last year. • The Great Game of Education, a firstof-its-kind program, is designed to give all campus employees a vested interest in the University’s financial well-being. A series of financial training sessions was designed to give employees an understanding of openbook management principles and an invaluable perspective on how their roles affect the University’s bottom line. • MSSU’s progressive work in the education field has resulted in Dr. Alan Marble, president of the University, being recognized among the 2018 Icons of Education class by Ingram’s magazine. The annual recognition honors those who, with the body of their working classrooms or administrative roles, have demonstrated exceptional ability to

influence students and elevate their academic performance, or whose administrative contributions have enabled teaching staffs to do the same. • Students are regularly recognized for their work in and out of the classroom, including the music department, mock trial team and athletic teams. • Since 1997, MSSU has made a concerted effort to internationalize its curriculum with themed semesters. Each fall, a particular country or region of the world is selected to become the focus of intensive study from the classroom to the cafeteria. Over the years, those semesters have focused on China, India, Russia, Cuba, Africa, Great Britain and many others. In 2018, MSSU will celebrate the Scandinavian Semester. The University’s international mission was developed in the 1980s as a way of ensuring that students were prepared for an increasingly globalized economy and world. • Study abroad programs provide MSSU students with additional opportunities to gain an understanding of other cultures and international issues. In 2018-19, students will travel to Paris, China, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Europe, Scandinavia and Sweden under faculty supervision. Individually, students can spend an entire semester in such countries as Austria, China, England, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands or Morocco through the International Student Exchange Program or MSSU’s bilateral agreements with universities around the world. n

Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences Founded in 1916, Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences began as one of the nation’s first colleges of osteopathic medicine and has grown to become the largest medical school in Missouri. In 2017, KCU opened a second campus in Joplin, marking a significant milestone in the University’s history. KCU-Joplin was made possible through partnerships between KCU and Mercy Hospital Joplin, Freeman Health System, the City of Joplin and philanthropic leaders from Joplin and the surrounding communities.
As the only medical school campus in southwest Missouri, KCU-Joplin seeks to provide educational opportunities for students who want to study and practice medicine in the area, rather than having to relocate. As the region experiences a growing need for physicians, it’s hoped that KCU-Joplin will help provide new doctors who expand access to primary care. Currently, KCU is the secondlargest provider of physicians in Missouri and Kansas, with more than 60 percent of alumni practicing in primary care specialties.

This allows students the opportunity to transfer to these institutions seamlessly upon completion of their studies at Crowder. Men’s baseball and soccer and women’s basketball and softball play a very large part in campus life at this nationallyranked Division I school. Over the years, numerous Crowder College athletes have been drafted into Major League Baseball and have been named All-Americans in both athletics and academics. In fact, the school hosts scouting days when college and professional scouts may visit the campus to see prospects for four-year and professional athletics. Crowder College also boasts a Business and Training Development segment that offers customized non-credit training to area industries for their employees. Crowder has partnered with the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce to offer classes at the Joplin Advanced Training and Technology Center. The programs offered include: Advanced Manufacturing – Programmable Logic Controllers, Computer IT, Drafting, and Welding. These programs are set to complete a certificate in one or two semesters. The experience gained in these programs allows a student to enter the workforce in a high-demand field. n

HIGHER EDUCATION
Missouri State University’s Joplin Outreach outreach.missouristate.edu/joplin.htm Scores of educational professionals and social workers in southwestern Missouri have advanced their careers since the early 1990s by attending classes at Missouri State University’s Joplin Outreach campus and earning graduate degrees without having to travel 72 miles to the main campus in Springfield. The Missouri State University Outreach Center in Joplin moved to its current location in 2010 and now not only educates graduate students in its classrooms, but it also assists undergraduates who are taking online classes by offering test proctoring, computer labs and other support services, according to Larry Nichols, regional outreach administrator for the Southwest Region, which includes centers in Joplin, Nevada, Cassville and Neosho.
Missouri State University began in 1905 and was formerly called Southwest Missouri State University. It officially changed its name to Missouri State University in 2005 in order to reach out to students all over the state. Today MSU’s three campuses in Missouri, its one campus in China and its many satellite locations enroll 26,000 students. The Joplin Outreach Center generally enrolls 25 to 60 students per semester and the majority of courses are offered in the evenings. Traditional classes, as well as classes using interactive television and Zoom web conferencing to allow students in various locations to interact
with each other and the professor, are all offered. “We are constantly trying to grow opportunities in this region and make higher education accessible to all,” Nichols said. n

Ozark Christian College occ.edu Ozark Christian College is one of the premiere Christian colleges in the United States. The mission of this Bible-focused college is to train men and women for Christian service, both in churches and in parachurch organizations and ministries that aim to make the world a better place. The college offers six different bachelor’s degrees, three associate
degrees and even an online degree, said Amy Storms, director of marketing and communications. Majors include psychology and counseling, student ministry, biblical communication, biblical justice, worship arts and organizational leadership. “Currently, we have an enrollment of approximately 600 undergraduate students on campus, plus a few dozen studying with us online,” she said. “Many of our students are simultaneously pursuing a degree at Missouri Southern State University through our dual degree program allowing them to receive a bachelor’s degree from each institution over a fiveyear period.” Student ministry majors generally go on to pursue careers in youth ministry, working with

junior high and high school students, while those majoring in worship arts are employed in music ministries and other related fields. Biblical justice majors may go on to law school or choose to work in social service agencies, while those who study preaching go on to speak and teach regularly in their churches. Ozark’s 15,000 alumni have served in 50 states and over 100 different countries. Among them are best-selling authors Kyle Idleman of Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky, and Jon Weece of Southland Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky. Ozark Christian College was founded in Bentonville, Arkansas, in 1942. It moved to the much more bustling Joplin in 1944 where it initially operated out of a renovated house on North Wall Street. Ozark moved to its current 100-acre campus in the early 1960s. Students participate athletically in six varsity sports – men’s and women’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s cross country. n

Vatterott College-Joplin specializes in trade school classes and career college programs in its approximately 30,000 square feet of lab and classroom space on Illinois Avenue.
The WTI Joplin campus specializes in helping students change careers, begin new careers or train for promotions. WTI, which has five campus locations in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma, has been in career education since 1954.
The facility features lecture, lab and shop areas with industry-related equipment and computers needed for demonstration, instruction and student hands-on training. From enrollment until graduation and beyond, the school is very hands-on with students, providing them with the skills, training and resources they need to embark on a successful career. The career-focused offerings include: • Trades: The campus is enrolling students for computer-aided drafting, welding, HVACR and electrical programs.
“We are different due to the fact we are small, student-centered, flexible and help the students by making enrollment through graduation a process where we work as one,” said Campus Director Linda Lynch. “We stand beside our students through the process.” The school offers programs for: • Computer technology and network administration • Heating, air conditioning and refrigeration technology
“WTI strives to develop students’ knowledge and commitment to their future by providing them with the tools necessary to succeed in their chosen field,” Lynch said. “We also set standards that will help each individual student develop the personal character and self-respect that is vital to his/her success after graduation.”
CITY POINTE BEAUTY ACADEMY citypointebeauty.com City Pointe Beauty Academy has continued to grow in the nine years it has served the Joplin area, expanding in 2017 to add even more space. City Pointe has an enrollment of between 60-70 students in the building with room to grow. It is a Redken premier school, which means City Pointe trains students using only top-of-the-line professional products. “Our school programs are cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology and massage

The academy is accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences, licensed by the Missouri Board of Cosmetology and Barber Examiners, the Missouri Board of Therapeutic Massage, certified to operate by Missouri Department of Education and approved by the U.S. Department of Education to offer federal student aid.
NEW DIMENSIONS SCHOOL OF HAIR DESIGN newdimensionsschoolofhair design.com New Dimensions, which was opened in 1991 by Dennis and Sharon Clements, teaches cosmetology, hairdressing and manicuring to Joplin-area students. Starting the school became a focus for Sharon after she attended a different school in the Joplin area. “My passion switched from standing behind the chair to educating students in their passion for this industry,” she said. “It is pure joy to watch a student’s face light up when they accomplish a task or grasp onto a new concept or idea.” The school uses Paul Mitchell products and plays host to Paul Mitchell-trained educators who come into the school twice monthly to provide further education to the students. These extra classes concentrate more on the aspects of working in the salon and guest services than textbook theory. The school has about 30 students at a time. New Dimensions offers different attendance schedules to fit the needs and lifestyles of students, including people with part-time jobs, single parents or parents with school-age children.

ADVANCED TRAINING AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER joplincc.com/attc The focus areas for the Advanced Training & Technology Center (ATTC) are to provide workforce training and facilitate business incubation. The ATTC, which is a partnership between the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, City of Joplin, Crowder College and Workforce Innovation Board, includes Crowder-taught classes in welding, advanced manufacturing, information technology, computeraided drafting and community health. In addition to the classroom areas, the building has more than 6,000 square feet of additional business incubator space, including a full commercial kitchen to incubate culinary businesses. The incubator space is the only one of its kind in Joplin, and can ease the financial burden on entrepreneurs in a variety of fields who are trying to get a business off the ground, said Loni Smith, director of small business incubation for the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce. Through the incubator’s connections with the Chamber, the entrepreneurs can get assistance with setting up a business plan, obtain mentorship and network with other Chamber members. “The goal, in the end, is job creation,” Smith said. “We want people to start small businesses, hire more local talent and grow our economy.”

Multiple self-checkout stations populate the building. An automated system checks in and sorts materials. Coming soon is the 24/7 locker pick-up of books on reserve. All of these features have resulted in a rise in patronage, Joplin Public Library Director Jacque Gage noted. “We have seen a 32 percent increase in circulation of materials and a 21 percent increase in program attendance,” she said. Furthermore, new patron cards have increased dramatically. n

417-626-8009 Although often believed to have been named for the ragtime composer Scott Joplin, who lived in Sedalia, Missouri, the City of Joplin is named for Reverend Harris Joplin, an early settler and the founder of the area’s first Methodist congregation. The city was established in 1873 and expanded significantly from the wealth created by the mining of zinc. But its growth faltered after World War II when the price of the mineral collapsed. Soon thereafter, however, the city gained travelers and notoriety as the famed Route 66 passed through it.

Each year they hold an annual Home Show at which members showcase product samples and photos of finished jobs so that interested members of the public may view work, touch and handle products and converse with service providers. “It is particularly important in this part of the country to work with a local person who both knows the codes and fees and also understands the challenges of working in our terrain,” said Valerie Searcy, executive officer of the association. Occasionally, the association also holds a Parade of Homes, allowing local builders to construct entire homes that then appear on a public tour. The association holds monthly events like a golf tournament, fishing tournament and clay shooting event, particularly from May through October, and awards trade school and college scholarships to the children of fellow members. “Our goal at these fun, low-key events is to allow our members to network with others in the industry so that our contractors can possibly find new local subcontractors and suppliers,” Searcy said. Builders in the area (all of whom are locally-based at this point) primarily focus on constructing and remodeling single family homes and occasionally multi-family structures, Searcy noted. We are also fortunate to have so many eating establishments available to us, including pubs, bars and grills, family style restaurants and fine dining. We have tons of shopping variety, both big box and local. We have a wide selection of grocery stores, health food shops and exercise venues. We have two major medical systems, affordable homes and a healthy local economy, all making a wonderful opportunity to live, work and retire here,” she added.

“As far as I know, new homes, which are clean and unlived in, are on the showing lists of clients, but so are older homes which feature lots of character and mature trees. It depends on each buyer’s preferences,” she said. The average “days on market” for a home in Joplin is 120 and the average price for a home sold in Joplin is $124,288, Cox said. New homes in Joplin tend to range in price from approximately $86,000 to $300,000. As of early March, Cox admitted that “the current housing stock in the Joplin Metro Area is lower than we’d like to see. We currently have about 350 less listings than we normally carry. For the homes that are currently listed and priced well within their appraisal value, showings start almost immediately when hitting the MLS and are seeing offers quicker than usual.” The Ozark Gateway Association of Realtors (OGAR) has 608 members in its Multiple Listing Service. oplin is fortunate to have groups in the community working to promote arts and culture and keep residents informed of upcoming opportunities. Connect2Culture (C2C) was founded in 2009 as a nonprofit arts organization and has operated as Joplin’s community arts agency since 2013. “One of our goals is to give all the arts organizations in the area a voice,” said Emily Frankoski, community arts director. “We work with many different organizations to help grow the arts community.” Operating as an umbrella organization, C2C supports the overall development of arts and culture in Joplin. “Joplin is fortunate to have groups in the community working to promote arts and culture and keep residents informed of upcoming opportunities,” she added. As a service to the community, the C2C website (connect2culture.org) features a comprehensive arts directory that acquaints residents and visitors with arts and culture offerings in the city. The site also provides access to arts roundtable discussions, a photographic public art directory, monthly Joplin arts news and
information on how to get more involved in the arts. The biweekly Joplin Arts & Cultural Calendar, available by email subscription, keeps residents informed of upcoming events, performances, exhibits and classes. In addition to arts services, C2C brings national touring performers to the area on a regular basis with their Curtains Up series initiated in fall 2017. They also host Joplin’s annual bluegrass festival, Fiddlers on the Route, every third weekend in June.
All of these efforts lead to an even bigger picture for the arts in Joplin. Connect2Culture and George A. Spiva Center for the Arts, Joplin’s premiere visual arts center, have been working since 2009 to build a state-of-the-art performing and visual arts center and plan to realize the Center in 2021. Plans include a multi-functional 450-seat performing arts venue that presents varied opportunities for usage, an expanded home for George A. Spiva Center for the Arts and a 1,800-2,000 capacity outdoor amphitheater/festival plaza. This exciting development will be located in the heart of downtown Joplin. Downtown Joplin Alliance was formed as a nonprofit organization to help revitalize the downtown community. Promoting the downtown area as a fun destination where visitors and residents can enjoy art, history, shopping and entertainment, the organization hosts several events throughout the year. Third Thursday has been the city’s trademark cultural event since 2008. From March through October on every third Thursday of the month, Joplin’s Main Street becomes a destination for enjoying music, entertainment, shopping and food. The main event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and draws a crowd of 5000

attendees! With food trucks, live music, artisan market, shopping, and performances of all types, Third Thursday is a must-attend event. Downtown restaurants offer dinner specials on Third Thursday as well as takeout items participants can enjoy as they stroll through the event. Shoppers find a variety of discounts as well as contests, special classes and events to make shopping downtown a fun experience. Downtown Joplin Alliance is also launching a brand new farmers market experience. April 28th, the Joplin Empire Market opened. It is a food-centric market held every Saturday year-round at 931 East 4th Street. The Empire Market combines farm fresh
goodness, hand-crafted products and local eateries, all in one location. Customers can shop for their weekly groceries, find unique gifts made by local artisans, enjoy local music and a meal, all within the market’s laid back atmosphere. The region’s universities provide additional arts opportunities. Missouri Southern State University hosts the Missouri Shakespeare Festival in June. Financially supported by the Missouri Arts Council, the annual event presents some of Shakespeare’s most famous works at the Bud Walton Theatre. Staged over two weekends, the event, organized by the theater department at MSSU, has included productions of “Macbeth,” “Twelfth Night” and “The Tempest.” The Bicknell Family Center for the Arts at Pittsburg State University hosts a variety of public musical performances, theater productions and lectures. The $33-million facility features a 1,100-seat performance hall, a 250-seat theater and a 3,500-square-foot art exhibition area with three galleries. One of the more popular activities is the Art Walk on the first Thursday from March through October in downtown Joplin. The event gives local artists and galleries a chance to showcase their work and often features live music. Hosted by Joplin Regional Artists Coalition (Linda Teeter is contact; 438-5931), an “after party” in a designated area extends the festivities with live music, beer gardens and more. n w w w. jop linc c .c om

The center, which is in the historic Cosgrove Building at Third and Wall in downtown Joplin, was founded by George A. Spiva, a businessman and philanthropist. “George A. Spiva Center for the Arts has been and continues to be the lynchpin to visual arts presentations, opportunities for arts education for all ages and supporter of aspiring and professional artists in Joplin and the surrounding fourstate region,” said Clifford Wert, president and CFO of Connect2Culture. “The Joplin community has stood behind Spiva Center for the Arts with consistent financial support and undergirding.” Spiva is taking its role a step further in the coming years. In addition to diversifying its new programs, the Center is partnering with Connect2Culture to develop an Arts & Entertainment Center that will: • Double the size of Spiva. • Add a 400 to 500 seat multi-functional performance space. • Include an 1,800 to 2,000 capacity outdoor amphitheater/festival plaza. “The Center will transform downtown Joplin and the region, matching a stateof-the-art space with the already high quality visual arts and programming that Spiva has provided for over 70 years, and stellar performances booked by Connect2Culture,” said Spiva Center for the Arts Executive Director Josie Mai. “The center will also be a space for special community events and facility rental.” 64
Partnerships include: • Veterans – Compass Quest, VFW, American Legion • Neighborhood centers – Boys and Girls Club, Joplin Family Y • Youth organizations – Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts • Homeschool – Homeschooler’s Network, Assembly of Christian Home Schooled Families • Adults with disabilities or mental illness – Independent Living Center, Alzheimer’s Association, and Ozark Center’s INSPIRE Center
Currently, Spiva’s 2,250 square foot Main Gallery features the work of nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. It also plays host to a variety of events, including artist-led talks and musical performances. Emerging local artists take the spotlight in the 540-square-foot Regional Gallery. The smaller Upstairs Gallery is a rental/ teaching facility where local artists can learn about how to install and promote exhibits of their work. Spiva’s daily work is influenced greatly by its mission – to celebrate the creative experience. Spiva averages 14,000 visitors per year but it is just as well known for its promotion of arts throughout the community. Spiva is in the midst of an intentional outreach to underserved groups in the visual arts. “We are actively growing partnerships with organizations,” Mai said. “We strive for museum-quality experiences in art
• Neighborhood picnics and festivals – Emancipation Days, Carl Junction Blues Fest, Joplin Arts Fest, Downtown Joplin First and Third Thursdays “Spiva Center for the Arts is a hub for the community, fostering creativity and dialogue,” said Anne Kraybill, director of education and learning, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. “Their exhibitions feature regional and national artists of renown, and their programs ensure the arts are accessible and relevant to all. They are a valued arts partner for the region!” Originally incorporated as the Ozark Artists Guild, George A. Spiva Center for the Arts has presented visual arts experiences to the four-state region since 1948. George A. Spiva – businessman, philanthropist, and lover of the arts – helped establish Joplin’s first art center in 1958. Founded on the belief that opportunities in the arts should be available to all, Spiva continues to flourish through the generosity of members and friends who share that vision. n

Joplin Little Theatre Joplin Little Theatre was formed in 1939 and just completed its 78th season of providing quality live theater to the Four-State area. Its first home was a former movie house with no seats or heat. Then came an auditorium on the second floor of the City Market, with a saloon on the first floor. Next, interest from the Joplin community provided the funding to purchase a stone building on the then outskirts of Joplin, which had been used as a stable for the horses of a riding academy. According to a member’s memory, “It took several months before the ‘horsey’ smell was gone.” Joplin Little Theatre is one of the few community theaters to own its own building. JLT normally presents five shows a season (two musicals, three plays) for five performances each. It also holds a

Children’s Summer Theatre Workshop, and presents a summer show targeted for family participation and attendance. A volunteer 17-member board of directors handles the operations of the theatre and a volunteer directing staff works the choice of shows presented. When a slate is gathered by the directing staff, it is presented to the board of directors for approval. The goal is to provide quality entertainment to patrons of theater, keeping in mind the culture of the community and the integrity of Joplin Little Theatre that has been gathered over its many years. Joplin Little Theatre depends on donations, grants and ticket sales for its support. Several fundraisers are offered throughout the season to augment the income. Over 400 productions have been staged, over 3,000 people have given their time and talents both on
stage and backstage and more than 300,000 people have attended these productions. Nearly every major play and musical that has appeared on Broadway has also been presented on the JLT stage. n
Stained Glass Theatre sgtjoplin.com Like the mythical Phoenix, Joplin’s Stained Glass Theatre, a faith-based, family-friendly amateur theatre, celebrates its 20th anniversary season during 2018. When the deadly tornado hit Joplin in 2011, the troupe’s company lost their theatre and the lives of several members, as well. But the troupe has persevered and celebrates two decades with a “best of” series of shows voted on by its audiences.
Today the company has a permanent home once again, only six blocks from its destroyed theater. The new one is a rehabbed church at 2101 Annie Baxter Avenue with graduated seating which can hold 180 people. The Stained Glass Theatre offers six to eight shows a year, an array that is also open to the entire family. “What sets us apart from other theater companies is the fact that we only perform shows that any member of the family can feel comfortable seeing,”
By Tammy Aggus
Jeremy Wolfe, head of the company said. “We have performed such shows as ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ ‘Emma,’ ‘A Little Princess,’ ‘It’s A Wonderful Life,’ ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ and many well-known musicals.” More information on Stained Glass Theatre can be found on its website (above) or on Facebook. History and Mineral Museum joplin-museum.org For more than 100 years, the Joplin area was one of the world’s leading sources for zinc, an era that’s celebrated in the city’s History and Mineral Museum. Tri-State Ore- Everett J. Ritchie Collection
Lead and zinc were mined in southwest Missouri, southeast Kansas and northeast Oklahoma in an area known as the Tri-State Mining District. The mining boom transformed the economic and social history of Joplin and the surrounding region, running from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s. Joplin was considered the hub of that district, as investment and population flowed into the area during the mining peak years of the late 1800s and early 1900s. “The story of Joplin is inextricably tied to the complex and fascinating history of mining, which makes the museum an educational destination for tourists who Aitchinson Hand Carved Miniature Circus- From the Merle Evans Circus Collection are traveling to and through the city,” said Director Chris Wiseman. “The Joplin Museum is the steward of one of the world’s most exceptional collections of lead and zinc ores, as well as other minerals from the Tri-State District.”

• The Dorothea B. Hoover Historical Wing, which focuses on various aspects of the city’s history, including how the mines led to growth and development in Joplin. “The Ritchie Mineral Wing interprets the geology, geochemistry and history of mining just prior to the Civil War through the mid-twentieth century,” Wiseman said. “For approximately 100 years, Joplin was zinc mining; and zinc mining was Joplin.” The Ritchie Wing is an accessible introduction to the geology and geochemistry of the area and shows the various mining methods and processes used from the 1870s through the 1960s. Some of the collections in the Ritchie museum include: • Evolution of mining technology and tools • Historical geological maps • Fossils, projectile points and stone tools • Florescent minerals • Modern usage of minerals The Hoover Historical Wing includes thousands of vintage artifacts, presenting “the material culture of the city’s growth and history,” Wiseman said. One of the museum’s top priorities is education. “We consider ourselves a partner in education for Joplin schools, businesses and organizations,” Wiseman said. “The
staff and volunteers strive to provide an enriching educational experience to all visitors. Each year thousands of area school children are introduced to the museum and given free tours.” The laid-back, friendly feel of the museum is exemplified by the presence of two loveable grey cats, Crystal and Roxie, who are popular with visitors. The museum is located in historic Schifferdecker Park. Also, the park is home to an 18-hole public golf course and the Joplin Aquatic Center. n

Joplin Annual Events and Festivals CULTURE & ATTRACTIONS
J
oplin has the distinction of being one of the most popular towns along Route 66, as it boasts an active Main Street and has several downtown events throughout the year.
It’s no wonder, then, that Joplin-area events are as popular with out-of-towners as they are with regional residents. One example of a new festival is Fiddlers on the Route, a bluegrass-focused festival that has a Route 66 connection. This will be the second year for the June event, which will take place in Memorial Hall in 2018 instead of outdoors as it did in its first year.
Another relatively new event that draws participants from dozens of states is the Joplin Memorial Run, which has become a hugely popular half-marathon and 5K. Over the past three years, $100,000 was donated to rebuild the specialized playground at the Bill and Virginia Leffen Center for Autism. A more traditional year-round event is to visit Candy House Gourmet, a chocolate factory near downtown that has been a top destination for almost 50 years. Visitors love to look through the windows to see the popular treats being made. Here is a look at some of the top events throughout the year:
MARCH First Thursday ArtWalk People can stroll among the city’s many art galleries and enjoy live musical performances during this event, which takes place from March through October.
68
St. Patrick’s Day 15K and 5K Each year, the Starlit Running Company organizes 5K and 15K runs in downtown Joplin on the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day. Third Thursday Main Street between First and Seventh Streets becomes a hotbed of activity from March through October with performance stages, vendor tents and food carts. Downtown galleries and restaurants feature art displays and car shows often take place. There are plenty of fun kid-focused activities as well. The experience changes as the themes and sponsors shift each month. PhotoSpiva This photo competition has taken place for more than 40 years at the George A. Spiva Center for the Arts. It is the longest-running one of its kind in the country and is open to all U.S. amateur and professional photographers. It takes place from March through late April or early May.
JUNE MSSU Shakespeare Festival This festival celebrating Shakespeare’s most famous works is staged over two summer weekends. It is presented by the theater department of Missouri Southern State University and takes place at the Bud Walton Theatre. Fiddler on the Route A bluegrass-focused festival, takes place in June on historic route 66.
JULY Independence Day Festival Fireworks are the star of the show at this event, which again takes place at Missouri Southern State University. Includes family activities, live music, food vendors, and more.
MAY Joplin Memorial Run The purpose of this two-day event – which includes a half-marathon, 5K and kids’ fun run – is to raise funds that support ongoing recovery from the May 2011 Joplin tornado. The event begins with a 10-block Walk of Silence along a flag-lined corridor with 161 flags that represent the people lost in the tornado. Joplin Truckers Jamboree This two-day rally for truckers takes place at the Joplin 44 Petro Truck Stop.
Summer Roundup Triathlon This Olympic triathlon takes place north of Joplin and is the largest open water triathlon in the Midwest. It includes a 1,500-meter swim, 24.6-mile bike course and a 6.2-mile run. Carver Day Carver Day commemorates the life of George Washington Carver and takes place on the second Saturday of July in nearby Diamond. The free event includes speakers, storytellers, and blues, jazz, folk and gospel performers.

Joplin Community Parks joplinmo.org/162/Parks-Recreation Joplin has more than 1,000 acres of park land and 22 city-owned parks and greenways. But one stands out, for historical and sentimental reasons – Cunningham Park. “Cunningham Park was the first park given to the city of Joplin in 1897,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Paul Bloomberg. “It was donated by Mayor Thomas W. Cunningham and was formerly known as Cunningham Grove.”
Recently, the district added new playgrounds at Ewert, Humphrey and Parr Hill parks and a shelter/amphitheater at Ewert Park. Upcoming park projects include: • New playground at Leonard Park • Expansion of the disc golf course at McClelland Park from 18 holes to 36 holes • New toddler play features at Garvin Park
EWERT PARK
• Mountain bike/pedestrian trail at Dover Hill Soccer Area
The park, which is at Seventh and School streets, has a picnic shelter, a picnic shelter/amphitheater, restrooms, parking lot, tennis courts, skate park, family aquatic center, playground, and basketball courts that have ornamental lighting for night use.
Here is a look at all the district parks:
CAMPBELL PARKWAY Located along a portion of Murphy Boulevard from Illinois Avenue to 20th Street, the parkway includes a 1.8-mile pedestrian trail with benches located along beautiful greenways, landscaped plots including trees, and Joplin Creek winding through the center. The park was a popular spot for many decades and then it took on new meaning after it was destroyed in the deadly 2011 tornado. Following the tornado, thousands of residents and volunteers from across the country pitched in to rebuild the park, which is now No. 1 on the list of Trip Advisor’s “Things to Do” in Joplin. It has become the main site for events in remembrance of the tornado and has several features – including a reflecting pool, plaque and butterfly garden – that honor those who died in the storm and people who helped in the aftermath.
CRESTWOOD PARK Located at Manitou Street and Crest Drive. Approximately 2 acres, it was given to the City of Joplin in 1949 by Mr. and Mrs. George N. Spiva.
CUNNINGHAM PARK On Maiden Lane from 24th to 26th streets, the park offers a variety of activities including a multi-use basketball/soccer court, swimming pool, walking trail, restrooms, two playgrounds, three shelters and a butterfly garden.
Also, Mercy Park, which is just south of Cunningham Park, has become a favorite for runners and walkers, Bloomberg said. “This park was the former property of Mercy Hospital before the tornado,” he said. “Mercy donated the land to the City of Joplin and it was developed into a passive park for people to enjoy.” Landreth Park is very popular for organizations that coordinate 5k runs and large events.
70
GARVIN PARK Located at 28th Street and Virginia Avenue, this park offers the advantages of being a small neighborhood park with a gazebo, playground and picnic shelter.
HUMPHREY PARK Facilities at this park on Utica Street and Independence Avenue include a picnic area, restrooms, paved walking path, playground, parking lot, a basketball court and a large open area for play.
LANDRETH PARK Situated at Landreth Avenue and Pool Street, this area offers picnic areas, jogging areas, four pickleball courts, two shelters, an amphitheater, restrooms, playgrounds, four sand volleyball courts, a softball field and two parking lots.

The theatre was destroyed and several occupants perished during the tornado. Plans are underway to help fund a memorial. The memorial run draws runners from all over the United States, and the citizens of Joplin have taken ownership of the event and consider it a source of community pride and testament to Joplin’s resilience in the face of a natural disaster.
ACTIVE LIFESTYLE EVENTS, INC. www.joplinmemorialrun.com Active Lifestyle Events, Inc. (ALE) was formed in 2011. Its mission is to promote health and fitness within the Joplin community. The primary event that funds ALE’s projects is the Joplin Memorial Run. The run was created to remember and memorialize Joplin victims of the May 22, 2011, EF5 tornado; support rebuilding the community; and to construct and maintain memorials to this historic event.
A majority of the proceeds from the event go to official charity partners to further this mission. Since its inaugural event in 2012, the memorial run has donated over $175,000 to rebuild homes for those who lost theirs in the tornado; help fund the recovery of the Joplin schools; and, most recently, to rebuild a specially equipped playground for children at the newly rebuilt Bill and Virginia Leffen Center for Autism. A portion of the funds for the 2018 event will help refurbish the newly acquired home of the Stained Glass Theatre.
ALE is also involved in promoting healthy, active living in the community. A grant program created last year awarded over $6,000 of grants to various local organizations. “Active Lifestyle Events is very proud to support local organizations in promoting active, healthy lifestyles,” said Audie Dennis, founder of the Joplin Memorial Marathon and president of Active Lifestyle Events. “Our flagship event, the Joplin Memorial Run, has helped citizens of this city continue to heal, is a lasting memorial to those lost that day and is a testament to the perseverance and fortitude of the residents of this community.” n

MIDWEST REGIONAL BALLET midwestregionalballet.com Midwest Regional Ballet (MRB) is a preprofessional performing arts company and dance education center for children, teenagers and adults, located in Joplin. Its mission is to build confidence and character while developing responsible community members, leaders and artists, said Kaye Lewis, the company’s artistic director. They strive to maintain a foundation of strength in firm leadership and integrity in action, to focus on family, responsibility, commitment, discipline, community awareness and the best in artistry.
MRB boasts both a 143-student dance school that trains children from the age of 2 to adults in ballet, jazz, tap, modern dance and even aerial moves and a dance company for those possibly interested in becoming professionals one day. The Dance Company portion of the MRB School was formed in 1999 as a means for young dancers (ages 10 to 32, currently) in the Four State area to achieve a professional career in performing arts by providing them the necessary technical foundation, skills and performance experience required to be successful in the arts. There is no other dance school in the Four State area that affords students the opportunity to perform in full-length productions through a performance season, thus 76
developing a proficient performance repertoire and résumé. The MRB Dance Company exists to equip students for a successful career in any aspect of the arts, through knowledge, confidence and discipline, Lewis said. In fact, 26 of her former students have already gone on to work professionally in music videos, television and movies, as well as at Friends University, Oklahoma University, Ballet National, the St. Louis Ballet, Denver Ballet, Wilmington Ballet Company, Joffrey Ballet (in New York City) and at Rutgers University. A native of the Four State area, Lewis has been teaching dance for 31 years. She was trained by Judith Pendergraft in Carthage, Gus Giordano’s Dance Center in Chicago and The Dallas Metropolitan Ballet. She has also won many awards for her works and has traveled across the United States networking with prominent professionals and creative minds, alike. Lewis also enjoys creating both original works and classical pieces for her company dancers to perform and enjoys partnering with outside talent such as the American Opera Studio of Kansas City, the Southeast Kansas Symphony Orchestra, the Harlem Globetrotters, local community theaters and Amplify Gymnastics.
proverbial hamster wheel, Lewis said. It will be presented at the Pittsburg Memorial Auditorium. “Prospective students sometimes worry that they will be spending hours and hours over weeks and weeks, rehearsing for an MRB show, but it actually takes no more time than rehearsing for a standard dance recital. We put our shows together in six weeks,” Lewis said. The MRB also gives back to the community by making donations to charitable organizations and nonprofits such as: Children’s Miracle Network, Hope 4 You Breast Cancer, Freeman’s Cancer Center, Lafayette House Women’s Addiction and Recovery Shelter, Susan G. Komen, Via Christi and the Arthritis Foundation. The company was also a supporter of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Art in Public Places” arts awareness initiative.
This spring the Dance Company performed “Cinderella” and it is slated, in early June, to perform an original production called “Black and White Series,” written by Lewis. It features six stories delving into such very serious topics as rape, drug abuse, suicide, mental illness, abuse and body dysmorphia and how “playing the victim” simply keeps one on the

amplifygymnastics.com Gymnastics is a sport practiced by men and women, children and adults, which requires balance, strength, flexibility, agility, coordination, endurance and control. The pursuit of gymnastics encourages the development of a variety of muscle groups, as well as the development of alertness, precision, daring, self-confidence and selfdiscipline. So it seemed to be the perfect antidote for a community suffering through the aftermath of a tornado. Amplify Gymnastics, which had been due to open in 2011, finally opened in March, 2012 after a total rebuild. The facility that owners Kip Johnson, Paul Comstedt and Derek Hammeke had been planning to open had been destroyed by Mother
Nature and it took until March 2012 for them to rebuild and finally open their doors. But the community welcomed them with open arms. By September of that first year they had enrolled 550 students and were bursting at the seams, Comstedt said. He found his way to Missouri, thanks to a full scholarship, to attend Ozark Christian College in 2004. That is how he met his co-owners. But after graduation, Comstedt returned to Colorado and then spent nearly a year on a mission trip to teach English and gymnastics in China, before returning to Missouri in 2010 to open a gymnastics school with his friends. “I had planned to pursue a career in teaching but discovered that I could do the mentoring with young people that

I longed to do by teaching gymnastics, too,” he said. Amplify Gymnastics teaches students from 18 months old to young adult. They employ approximately 30 teachers and staff members and run programming seven days a week. They also offer their facility for birthday parties and other private events – particularly on Saturday afternoons and evenings. “We currently have approximately 700 children, teens and young adults enrolled and we feel very blessed. We knew we could fulfill a need in this area and we are doing just that,” Comstedt said. “We have recently expanded to a 14,000-square-foot facility and offer state-of-the-art equipment including two springboards, in-ground trampolines, balance beams, parallel bars, foam pits and much more with average studentteacher ratios of 8:1.” The partners are able to offer urban gymnastics, cheerleading, trampoline and tumbling classes, pre-school gymnastics and beyond for those who wish to compete, as well those who only wish to develop their abilities without competing. Recreational classes run anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes per week. New competitors remain close to home while older, more experienced competitors travel nationally and practice between nine and 22 hours each week. “No matter a student’s level, our motto at Amplify is: Get AMPed,” Comstedt said. “AMP stands for Always Making Progress and that is what our students are doing.” For more information, visit www.amplifygymnastics.com. n w w w. jop linc c .c om

And what’s more, CIY is communicating and programming to students on the digital front through its Æffect division. Students can connect to one another and to CIY year-round through apps, online games, social media and various other digitally driven initiatives. After 50 years, CIY has made an impact for the Kingdom on a global scale, and that was fully realized in 2017 when the organization opened its first international office in Dublin, Ireland. By expanding to places like Europe, India, Canada and some Latin American countries, CIY is able to fully realize its mission to amplify Christ’s call on students’ lives to be Kingdom workers on a global scale. share our vision. It leads the Joplin area community concerning traditional spiritual values and moral issues, helping to promote and or provide continuing education and evangelistic opportunities.
The Joplin Area Ministerial Alliance (JAMA) is a fellowship of Christian ministry leaders, working toward a unified effort, to represent God and facilitate outreach to the greater Joplin community. That outreach is defined by the Upward (worship), Inward (fellowship) and Outward (evangelism) aspects of the Great Commission. The Vision of JAMA is to join hands in prayer and service to make a difference for the Kingdom of God. JAMA’s purpose is to encourage, support, promote harmony, pray for, and minister to one another and to all those that fall within the sphere of JAMA’s influence. JAMA actively promotes unity and a spirit of cooperation among Joplin area churches, para-church ministries and other nonprofit organizations that
JAMA also helps finance, support and participate in benevolent community programs, whether initiated by or simply endorsed and supported by JAMA.
Ministerial Alliance
JAMA is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization with a network of over 160 faith communities and congregations dedicated to these efforts. In keeping with our mission statement of “Many gifts, one spirit,” we recognize that each ministry leader brings to the table unique gifts which they can offer to the community and the region. This, in effect, builds leadership and relationships as we serve the communities represented. n

THE
MIGHTIEST LITTLE
CITY IN THE USA IS...
Jimmer who? • Jimmer Pinjuv is the Managing Member and part owner of Wildwood Ranch, LLC, a 2064-acre master planned community. • Over the past 40 years, Jimmer has been involved in various aspects of development, with experience in all phases of residential and commercial construction. He started his career working with merchant home builders in Las Vegas, Nevada and southern California — managing several residential and commercial projects. Later he owned and operated ‘The Pinjuv Companies’ a commercial contracting business in Las Vegas, until moving to the Joplin area in 2005.
Wildwood what? • One of the primary goals in developing Wildwood Ranch is to create jobs for residents and provide a strong economic foundation for the future of Joplin and the surrounding area. More and more businesses are choosing Wildwood Ranch for themselves and their employees because of the quality of life, excellent educational opportunities, central location in the U.S., and the relatively low cost of living. • We want to invite you to experience the Wildwood Life.
• It is this 40-year depth of experience that brings an entrepreneurial approach to business and opportunities to those organization that locate at Wildwood Ranch.
We’re ready for your call.
