EXPLORE OUR BUSINESS DISTRICTS The Southport Corridor, easily accessible via the CTA Brown Line and a short walk

from Wrigley Field, is a go-to regional destination for the perfect day of shopping. This street is full of local charm, offering an eclectic mix of clothing and accessory boutiques, salons and spas, trendy restaurants, and family hot spots. Its diverse visitors enjoy an elevated experience with a small town feel in a big city environment.

The Lincoln Hub is one of the city’s best kept secrets. History “This is a delightful spot, and one to which our citizens have flocked in large numbers since its first opening,” the Chicago Daily Tribune wrote in 1854. The delightful spot was the Lake View House, the breezy resort that gave Lakeview its name. The resort is long gone, but the visitors stayed. Chicagoans in the 19th century poured north into Lakeview, an agricultural region known as America’s celery capital. The newcomers turned truck farms into suburban subdivisions, incorporating as a city in 1887. Lakeview couldn’t make it on its own, and voted to join Chicago after two years of independence. The voters were “fools,” Lakeview’s mayor said, but it was done. Lakeview grew into a prosperous industrial neighborhood, with factories on Diversey Parkway and along the railroad that ran down Lakewood Avenue (you can still see traces of tracks). A few old businesses survive. Monastery Hill Bindery, founded by a German immigrant before the Fire, along with Dinkel’s Bakery, are some of the reminders of Lakeview’s German community. One of Lakeview’s last manufacturers is Torstenson Glass, a 19th century business

located near Belmont and Sheffield, in the heart of the old Swedish enclave where Ann Sather Restaurant stands. By the 1970s, Lakeview boasted an unusual and shifting population. Old families of German and Swedish stock were joined by American Indians, Southerners, Hispanics, gays, hippies and Japanese Americans. Restaurants like Zum Deutschen Eck co-existed with hillbilly joints, folk bars, taquerias and drag queens. Somehow it all worked. Lakeview started switching names regularly, a sure sign gentrification was coming. New Town, Wrigleyville, Boystown, Belmont Harbor, Graceland West: Some labels stuck and some didn’t. Lakeview grew into the neighborhood it is today, a fashionable urban locale with a deep history and a future yet to be written. This brief history of Lake View is based on the book “Lake View,” by Matthew Nickerson. His new book, “East Lake View,” was published in 2017. Landmarks Get an inside look at select Lakeview landmarks at Chicago Architecture Center’s annual Open House Chicago in October (www.openhousechicago.org).

The Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport Ave. Opened in 1911, The Athenaeum Theatre is the oldest continuously-operating off-Loop theater in Chicago. The German-American parishioners of St. Alphonsus built it to stage neighborhood theatrical productions and German folk operas. The building has long been a center for the arts. It provides offices, rehearsal space and several small studio theatres for numerous performing arts organizations. Though a fire damaged the building in 1939, the beautiful main auditorium survived unscathed. It seats nearly 1,000 and retains its Old World elegance. (Credit: Chicago Architecture Center)

Marshfield Trust and Savings Bank Building, 3301 N. Lincoln Ave. This terracotta-clad flat-iron building makes the most of its triangular lot. Like many neighborhood banks from the 1920s, the Marshfield Trust and Savings Bank employed the Classical Revival style of architecture to convey a sense of permanence and security. Arcaded two-story arched windows extend across both street facades. The building contractor was Avery Brundage, who went on to be president of the International Olympic Committee. The Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave. Opened in 1929, The Music Box Theatre serves as Chicago’s premier venue for independent and foreign films. With 700 seats, it is the largest film theater space operating full-time in the city. The Music Box Theatre presents 300 films annually, ranging from provocative documentaries and avantgarde midnight shows to family friendly singa-longs.

Schubas, 3159 N. Southport Ave. Historic Schubas Tavern, located at Southport and Belmont avenues, was once a “tied house,” as indicated by the Schlitz sign that remains above its second-floor windows. St. Alphonsus Church, 1429 W. Wellington Ave. With its soaring central bell tower clad in weathered green copper, St. Alphonsus has been a prominent feature of the sixway intersection of Southport, Lincoln and Wellington since 1896. The parish was founded by the Redemptorist Fathers in 1882, and was a major center of Chicago’s north-side German community. The GothicRevival interior features a royal blue ceiling with pointed arches and golden ribwork in starburst patterns that was restored after a 1950 fire. Lakeview Low-Line: Connecting & Beautifying Lakeview

Currently under construction, the Lakeview Low-Line re-envisions the halfmile space beneath the CTA elevated tracks between the Southport and Paulina stations as an exciting Chicago art destination and a fun and dynamic path connecting Lakeview. Mural walls along the walkway will play host to rotating art exhibits, creating a largerthan-life outdoor gallery. An interactive light installation along the length of the path will playfully celebrate the ‘L’ structure, creating a quintessentially Chicago experience. And new greenspace and plazas will beautify the neighborhood and provide opportunities for programming.

“Creating public artwork allows me to visually stimulate an audience and inspire them with my cast of characters doing what they do best: being humorous about the human experience.” Lauren Asta is a traveling muralist and artist who left her home base of San Francisco in 2016 to follow her paintbrush. She specializes in illustration, doodle art, street art and murals. Her murals are all hand painted without any aid of a sketch, projector, or traced outline. She works completely freehand.

Flight Patterns by Chris Silva and Yollocalli Arts Reach (2018), 3411 N. Paulina St. Chris Silva’s creative pursuits are firmly rooted in Chicago’s street art scene, and his artistic journey began right here in the neighborhood of Lakeview. Chris was an innovative figure in Chicago’s early graffiti and skateboarding scenes and from that foundation he proceeded to play a significant role in the development of what is now commonly referred to as “street art.” Yollocalli Arts Reach is the youth initiative of the National Museum of Mexican Art. For over 20 years, Yollocalli Arts Reach has made informal learning spaces available to thousands of teens and young adults in Chicago, winning numerous awards for innovative, youth-centered arts programming. Funded by SSA 27 as part of the Lakeview Low-Line.

Urbs in Horto by Louise “Ouizi” Jones (2019), 3637 N. Southport Ave. (Pictured below) Located just blocks from Wrigley Field in the heart of the Southport Corridor, Urbs in Horto is a bold new mural that incorporates colorful flowers found throughout the Midwest in its design. Created by renowned Detroit-based artist Louise “Ouizi” Jones, the artwork borrows its name from the City of Chicago’s official motto, which means “City in a Garden.”

Ouizi says depicting Chicago’s motto in plain view and using specific blooms will honor the city’s close relationship with nature: “Chrysanthemums are Chicago’s official flower, so they are featured most prominently in the mural. Roses are universally recognizable and loved, but they were also Anne Hewlett Fuller’s favorite, and the bloom that the famous Chicagoan architect and designer Buckminster Fuller gave her in courtship. Echinacea and prairie grasses are both found growing wild in Chicago, a nod to the abundance of beautiful wild foliage in Illinois.” Funded by SSA 27 and Southport Neighbors Association.

Lake View by Anthony Lewellen (2017), 3241 N. Lincoln Ave. This iconic 4,000 square-foot mural celebrates Lakeview at an intersection that has historically served as the geographical center of the neighborhood. Artist Anthony Lewellen was raised in Lakeview, went to Lake View High School and has been a prominent figure in the Chicago art scene for decades, drawing inspiration for his design from the place he once called home. Lewellen says the central female figure in Lake View personifies the neighborhood itself: “Her hair, flowing like waves, towers above the surrounding trees and buildings and in her reflected gaze, we see the horizon clear, blue, open and full of possibilities.” Funded by SSA 27.

Lakeview’s Coolest Cocktails Lakeview is home to a range of well-known establishments that serve innovative and experimental drinks alongside the classics.

Ella Elli is a crowd favorite, with an 1 extensive list of cocktails served at all hours. They love to highlight their Rosemary Gimlet, which contains Ketel One Grapefruit & Rose, lime juice, simple syrup, grapefruit juice, and a spritz of green chartreuse. According to Marketing Manager Lindsey Kamberos, here’s the secret: “Take the sprig of rosemary, curl it at the bottom of the glass, six sprays of green chartreuse. Light the rosemary (on fire). Let it burn for a few seconds until you smell the smoking rosemary—then dump ice on top of the flame to put it out. Pour all ingredients in a shaker—shake for 15 seconds. Pour the mixture over ice.”

Refined Italian restaurant Coda di 2 Volpe has a wide variety of drinks, including a special “After Dinner Drinks” menu with dessert. If you are searching for something with Italian flare, Coda di Volpe serves it up. Try the Stolen Vespa, the Stella Candente or the Spiced Cranberry Orange Lightworks–a slushie cocktail in the style of the Italian sgroppino.

Explore another taste of Italy at La 3 Gondola. Their Limoncello Martini is a must when you visit, transporting you straight to the coast of Southern Italy.

You have to try the Tied House Old Fashioned, made with Evan Williams bourbon and Schlitz Demerara syrup. Ryan Beshel, founder and creative director, shared, “We make a simple syrup using Schlitz lager instead of water and Demerara sugar instead of white sugar. This gives the syrup a malty richness that we love. Finished with house bitters, a large cube and both an orange and lemon swath, it’s been on the menu since day one.”
