Gilbert Originally named Sparta and situated near a mining location that began in 1892, relocated to make way for iron ore mining. Simply taking the name of the nearest group of mines – Gilbert – the town moved near the city of Virginia and was incorporated into a village in 1908. The road that is now Broadway (State Highway 37) was originally built from pine trees growing in he four cities served by the Laurentian Chamber have a shared past that revolves around a great natural discovery – iron ore. Eveleth, Gilbert, Mountain Iron and Virginia are among a group of towns stretching across the low rolling hills of the Mesabi Iron Range, one of the world’s bestknown sources of iron ore. United by their mining origins, each city also has a distinct and fascinating history of its own to tell.
T
Eveleth The beginnings of Eveleth began with the discovery of ore deposits and the formation of the Adams Mining Company. On April 22, 1893 the first map of the village of Eveleth was filed with the Register of Deeds, which reported a population of 200 residents. (The name of Eveleth was adopted in honor of Erwin Eveleth, a timber cruiser who owned land upon which the city is now located.) In 1902 the city was incorporated, and City Hall was constructed in 1906. Today, Eveleth’s population is approximately 4,000, and mining continues to be a main source of business. Additionally, Eveleth has five sites on the National Register of Historic Sites and has provided six members of U.S. Olympic hockey teams.
Merritt Days Festival,” and a two-and-a-half ton, 10-foot high statue of Merritt stands in the heart of the city. A source of pride, Mountain Iron is known as “The Taconite Capital of the World.” Taconite, an ironbearing rock, became viewed as a new resource once the supply of natural ore began to decrease. A process was developed to create Taconite pellets, and Minnesota’s iron ore mining industry was saved. Because of that, mining continues to be Mountain Iron’s central industry. Currently Minnesota’s third-largest city in geographical size, Mountain Iron, with a population of 3,500, carries forward with its proud mining tradition.
Virginia
Gilbert, and was at once part of a twentyeight-mile boardwalk connecting the eastern Mesabi Range towns. Additionally, Gilbert was the eastern boundary of the Mesabi Electric Railway, an interurban streetcar line that ran from Gilbert to the town of Hibbing. Recently, the city of Gilbert reclaimed the historical landmark Lake Ore-be-gone, which was the result of natural flooding from three local iron ore mines. With an approximate population of 1,900, Gilbert continues to develop and grow, and in 2008 will be proudly celebrating its 100th year.
Mountain Iron Named for the Mountain Iron Mine, it was here in 1890 that Leonidas Merritt discovered iron ore. This is considered to be the origin of iron ore mining on the Mesabi Iron Range. In August, Mountain Iron celebrates this event with the annual “Leonidas
The history of Virginia, “Queen City of the North,” began with mining explorations. Settlers first came to the area in 1890 and in 1895, it was incorporated as the first city on the Iron Range. Both iron ore mining and lumber milling were lucrative businesses for Virginia, and at one time the city was home to both the largest white pine mill in the world and the biggest ore-producing mine. Surviving two fires (one in 1893 and one in 1900), Virginia persevered and currently has fifteen buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Virginia’s population has varied throughout the years. In 1895, approximately 1,000 people lived in the city. The population had reached 5,000 before the fire of 1900, and decreased to 2,900 shortly afterward. Now with an estimated population of 9,100, Virginia, proudly located at the heart of the Iron Range and centered around the Taconite industry, continues to flourish. According to the Minnesota Department of Trade and Economic Development, more Minnesotans than ever own their homes. Rentals account for one out of four occupied housing units in Minnesota, while property owners occupy almost 75 percent of housing. The high rate of ownership, seen especially in northeastern Minnesota, is attributed to affordability and the availability of living-wage jobs.

Two of the region’s state parks offer different perspectives of iron mining on the Iron Range. A visit to the Soudan Underground Mine State Park takes visitors on a half-mile trip into the earth via elevator and train to experience first-hand how it felt to be a miner who worked daily in an underground mine. Most iron mines in the area eventually converted their underground mines to strip mining operations, and the Hill Annex Mine State Park offers an excellent example of this “open pit” mining experience. The result of natural flooding from three local mines, Lake Ore-be-Gone in Gilbert is a haven for water-skiers, swimmers, fishers and scuba divers. With boat landings, docks, and picnic areas, there is much to enjoy.

The area is home to 155 nesting birds and 40 species of wildlife, and it is not uncommon to sight a moose! Popular casual recreation trails include Bear
Fishing is another popular sport in the area. There are outstanding opportunities for both shore and boat fishing. Plentiful are walleye, bass, crappie, muskie, northern pike, and rainbow, brook and lake trout. Fishing guides are available at selected lakes and resorts. There are tax-free business opportunities in Minnesota. Under the new Minnesota Job Opportunity Building Zones (JOBZ) program, 34 communities and 58 sub-zones on 3,271 acres across northeastern Minnesota have been given this special designation. A wide variety of industrial sites and existing buildings in this area offer growing and expanding businesses the opportunity to substantially benefit from tax exemptions until the end of 2015.
& INDUSTRY ecause of vast natural reserves, much industry in the quad cities revolves around mining, forest products, and newly discovered resources. For over 100 years, iron ore mining has provided thousands of well-paying jobs for people in the area. The mining industry continues to hold strong because of the discovery of Taconite (an iron-bearing rock). Found in large deposits in recent years, other minerals such as copper, nickel and precious metals are also being looked at for potential commercialization. The timber industry contributes to the regional economy as well. New innovations, such as the harnessing of wind energy and a clean coal gasification technology will create a positive economic and environmental impact for residents of northeastern Minnesota and the entire state.
B
Northeastern Minnesota is rapidly becoming one of the most technologically-equipped rural areas in the nation. Technology centers, high-tech industrial parks, training programs and an extensive telecommunications infrastructure are among the list of efforts to equip the region for this new economy. Companies such as Northwest Airlines and Carlson Wagonlit Travel/SATO Travel have discovered that the region’s quality of life, dedicated workforce and business development incentives combine to form an ideal operating environment. Technology centers, offering hi-speed Internet connections, computer labs, and business support services are beginning to emerge in the area as well. Existing technology centers include the Itasca Technology Exchange and Ely Area Technology Center, and over 10 more technology centers are planned for the future.
Northeastern Minnesota is well-known for its highly skilled, educated and productive employees. Turnover rate is low, and the region has become a draw for companies looking for outstanding employees. Labor statistics in northeastern Minnesota show an educated workforce. 91 percent of Minnesotans have a high school education or above, 17 percent have earned bachelor degrees and 50 percent are professionally certified or licensed (source: Bureau of Business & Economic Research UMD School of Business and Economics). A 2005 study from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development found that regional employment is divided as follows: Health Care and Social Assistance – 20.6 percent; Retail Trade – 12.9 percent; Educational Services – 9.4 percent; Manufacturing – 8 percent; Public Administration – 7.1 percent; Mining – 2.7 percent. Top employers in the area include Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, United States Steel Corportation, Woodline Manufacturing, Inc., Minnesota Power, Belcorp and Premier Plastics. The Laurentian Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit organization made of over 325 members representing business/industry throughout the quad cities and surrounding communities. The Chamber plays an important role in community partnerships and is an advocate for business civic, and industrial interests. The Chamber is also an information and referral center serving businesses in Eveleth, Gilbert, Mountain Iron, Virginia and surrounding communities.
