W

hile the park that Lincoln Park is named after and Lake Michigan provide for a special experience in and of themselves, there’s so much more to explore than just abundant open space. Take a tour of the cultural institutions and other unique destinations that make the park and lakefront unlike any other in Chicago.

Don’t forget to make time for the Chicago History Museum during your adventure along the lakefront. Located at the southernmost tip of Lincoln Park – both the park and the neighborhood – the Chicago History Museum celebrates the people, places and events that make Chicago a city unlike any other.

Are you looking for a good running path? Perhaps a bike ride along the Lakefront Trail? Maybe you’re just hoping to relax, play some Frisbee in the park and soak up some sun by the lake? Any way you slice it, our neighborhood’s parks and lakefront are the best outdoor spaces in Chicago.

CHICAGO HISTORY MUSEUM* 1601 N. Clark  (312) 642-4600  www.chicagohistory.org

Nature doesn’t stop once you enter the lakefront’s popular cultural destinations. Visit the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and you’ll be engrossed by the incredible Butterfly Pavilion and a look at Chicago’s prairie past. Walk five minutes south to celebrate nature of all kinds at the Lincoln Park Conservatory. Here you’ll not only find Midwest plants, but warm up on a cold winter’s day with lush, tropical plants too. The fun doesn’t stop there! After learning about the animals that are native to Lincoln Park and the different orchid species, head a little further south to the Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago’s free, open 365 days-a-year destination for everything from snakes and sea lions to zebras and monkeys. The Lincoln Park Zoo has recently undergone several exciting renovations with a new polar bear and penguin habitat set to open this year. This is a must-stop spot with friends, family or that special someone. Local’s tip: Warm up or cool down inside the primate house!

MORE GREAT PARKS From the neighborhood’s namesake park to Jonquil, Oz, Wrightwood and other area green spaces, Lincoln Park is home to dedicated outdoor spaces at nearly every turn. These parks provide for amazing opportunities to celebrate summer in the city, play a game of Chicago’s own slow-pitch softball with friends or picnic with family. Lincoln Park’s ample green spaces contribute to the neighborhood’s walkability and unique sense of place.

ENJOYING LINCOLN PARK

C

hicago’s music, art and theater scenes have been producing nationally-renowned talent for generations. In Lincoln Park, we have countless opportunities to see emerging or established talent at our many venues. Everyone knows that Chicago is home to the blues, and Lincoln Park has several famous venues for this style of music. That’s why you have to stop by Kingston Mines and B.L.U.E.S., which feature amazing blues musicians each night. If more modern and up-and-coming music is your style, check out the Park West and Lincoln Hall, where amazing sound and an intimate layout put you at arm’s reach to your favorite band or the next “big thing” on tour. On any given night in Lincoln Park, you’ll find as many as 10 stages full of theater productions ranging from the dramatic to over-the-top and hilarious. The DePaul Theatre School highlights the next generation of theater actors while Steppenwolf

20

IL-CHI-CW-16 FINAL PRINT.indd 20

Theatre Company brings the country’s best talent together at popular shows. Along Lincoln Avenue you’ll find Victory Gardens Biograph Theater, The Greenhouse Theater Center, performances of Emerald City Theatre (at the Apollo Theatre) and the American Blues Theater. And how could we mention theater without giving props to the amazing comedy scenes found in Lincoln Park – The Second City, which has graduated some of today’s top comedians, as well as the iO Theater renowned for its improv performances! The public art is worth an afternoon exploring in itself. In Lincoln Park, you’ll spot Abraham Lincoln, Alexander Hamilton, Ulysses S. Grant, Shakespeare and more. In Oz Park, Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow are sprinkled throughout. And along busy commercial corridors in Lincoln Park, you’ll find sculptures from local artists, thanks to the Art on Clark 3D Program and the Chicago Sculpture Exhibit.

incoln Park is one of Chicago’s premier neighborhoods for shopping. Whether you’re searching for furniture, clothes or gifts from national brands to independent boutiques, we’ve got it all. Recognized by hotel concierges, bloggers and fashion experts for being home to a stylish and concentrated retail scene, the neighborhood’s boutiques and other retailers are an amazing asset. Our neighborhood’s contrast of large and small retailers all found within a charming yet vibrant community, present a one-of-a-kind shopping experience.

Of all the hot shopping spots in Lincoln Park, perhaps the most unique is the Armitage – Halsted – Webster area. Both a historic district and architecturally significant, Armitage – Halsted – Webster is the place for high-end clothing, handmade accessories, one-of-a-kind gifts, children’s goodies and other great Chicago treasures. Armitage – Halsted – Webster has gained national notoriety for attracting exclusive brands, and the community’s treelined streets and historic homes makes you forget that you’re

shopping in one of the world’s biggest cities.

North/Clybourn Red Line stop may be your best bet – that is, if you’re not buying a new couch while visiting the area!

Along Clark Street and Diversey you’ll find more boutiques and retailers in a shopping corridor that shines with customers popping in and out of bustling storefronts. In fact, the Diversey and Clark intersection and surrounding area is one of the most trafficked by pedestrians in the City of Chicago and only steps from the lakefront attractions. Lincoln Park’s Clybourn Corridor is well known for being home to some of the nation’s most popular brands, with a primary focus on home goods and furniture. Onsite parking is available at many businesses in this corridor and recently the New City complex was completed with fresh new brands and parking. But the CTA’s North Avenue bus or

A quick trip east down North Avenue from the Clybourn Corridor brings you to Old Town. A historic community with much of its shopping and dining tucked within Lincoln Park’s shadow. Old Town is another walkable area with a contrast of local favorites and national brands. Local’s tip: If you’re staying downtown, the south end of the neighborhood is a great place to start or end your trip as it’s located just blocks from River North and Streeterville hotels. O

ne of the best ways to experience the neighborhood is by checking out the food scene. In Lincoln Park, you can get a taste of everything that makes Chicago one of the world’s best – and most diverse – culinary destinations. Whatever your taste buds may fancy, there’s no denying the fact that Lincoln Park is a foodie’s dream! Looking for that perfect place to celebrate a special occasion? Maybe you’re trying to find the hip new spot to take that out-of-town guest? Restaurants are scattered throughout the neighborhood, making it easy to pop in to a local café, gastropub or market after a full day of outdoor fun, shopping and catching the sites. From family-friendly and more affordable eateries to well-established restaurants, you’ll find a range of dining options here in Lincoln Park. In 1988 the Goose Island Beer Company launched in Chicago on Clybourn in Lincoln Park, helping to establish both the area and the craft beer movement as the next big thing. Goose Island’s footprint in Lincoln Park is just one example of the dining experiences that started in this neighborhood. Another nationally-renowned brand,

Lettuce Entertain You, opened its first restaurant right here in Lincoln Park with RJ Grunts, just across from the Lincoln Park Zoo. Beyond all of Lincoln Park’s firsts, there are of course the new and trendy hot spots popping up throughout the neighborhood. Places like de Quay, where you’ll experience a fusion of Dutch and Indonesian cuisine, Knife & Tine, which takes the average American dish and puts their distinctive culinary twist on it, and many others, provide plenty of options for anyone having a night out. Every winter Lincoln Park eateries provide a warm getaway for diners, with an inviting ambience and hearty seasonal dishes. Yet it’s the spring, summer and fall seasons that really allow Lincoln Park restaurants and bars to shine when they open their sidewalk cafés for al fresco dining. Lincoln Park sure has great food, but is also home to some of the hottest places to go for a night out on the town. From cocktail lounges and authentic English and Irish pubs to sports bars, dives and everything in between, you can easily grab a local brew, swirl that glass of Pinot Noir, or sip that perfect tropical cocktail. Couple that with the country’s best comedy clubs and music venues and your night out in Lincoln Park is complete. For a list of restaurants, check out our Dining Guide on pages 27-31 and directory pages 69-71.

NEIGHBORHOOD RESOURCES PARKING Residents living in Lincoln Park, or any Chicago neighborhood, are required to renew their city vehicle stickers annually. Individuals moving to Chicago or purchasing a new vehicle are given 30 days following the purchase or move-in date to obtain the necessary sticker without incurring a late fee. Proof of residency is required. Certain residential streets require specific residential parking permits that limit parking on many city streets to residents and their guests during designated hours. Often found around high-traffic areas including schools, high-density residential neighborhoods, cultural institutions and commercial districts, much of Lincoln Park falls into one of several residential parking zones. One-day (24 hour) visitor parking permits are available for residents to provide parking access for friends or relatives. 24-hour visitor permits can be purchased by residents at your local alderman’s office. These passes cost $8 for 15 one-day permits. Visit www.chicityclerk.com for more information on parking permits. Most commercial streets in Lincoln Park feature pay-and-display parking boxes where you purchase time with quarters and/or credit cards. The printed receipt is then placed on your dashboard. The maximum allotted time on streets governed by payand-display boxes is generally three hours – enough to allow for dinner and a show. Download the Park Chicago app (www.parkchicago.com) for convenient payment and tracking of your parking.

ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION CTA The Chicago Transit Authority’s (CTA) affordable and reliable buses and trains are vital to Chicago’s residents, businesses and visitors. Lincoln Park is served by three CTA train lines, often dubbed the “L”: the Brown Line, which offers service between the Loop and Kimball; the Red Line, which runs between How-

46

#MAKEITLP

IL-CHI-CW-16 FINAL PRINT.indd 46

ard and 95th/Dan Ryan; and the Purple Line Express, which offers rush hour service, Monday through Friday, between Linden (in Wilmette) and the Loop. Over a dozen bus routes offer service to and from Lincoln Park making access to the neighborhood and its amenities a breeze. For more information on routes and fares, including special packages and reduced fare qualifications, please visit www. transitchicago.com. METRA Metra is Chicagoland’s popular commuter rail network and is a wonderful way to get to Lincoln Park and avoid traffic to and from the northern and northwestern suburbs. For complete information on routes and fares, visit www.metrarail.com. BICYCLING Chicago continues to build on its commitment to being a bike-friendly city. In Lincoln Park, bike lanes can be found on many of the neighborhood’s most popular thoroughfares and hundreds of bike racks are available where they’re needed most. Chicago’s Lakefront Trail, which runs 18 miles from Edgewater to South Shore, is one of the best ways to see the city, and Lincoln Park is a natural stopping point during the journey. Please remember to obey all traffic laws, wear a helmet and note that the City of Chicago requires a headlight if you’re traveling at night. Most CTA buses have racks to transport your bicycle and CTA and Metra trains allow for bikes during non-rush periods. CAR-SHARING Car-sharing continues to grow in popularity in Chicago as people look for ways to cut costs but still enjoy the flexibility of a car. Two major companies are currently operating in Chicago offering residents the option of car-sharing to minimize congestion, pollution and physical vehicles in Chicago. Zipcar (LPCC member) and Enterprise Car Share offer a range of rental packages to meet your needs and car-sharing parking spots can be found in dozens of Lincoln Park lots.

The LPCC developed the Lincoln Park Guide to Good Storefront Design as a resource for current and aspiring business and property owners to ensure that good design is part of their retail storefront. This guide provides you with the general City of Chicago requirements for signs, awnings, window displays and lighting. It also provides specific recommendations about what good design looks like in the context of Lincoln Park, and some basic guidelines to follow that should help your business thrive in the neighborhood. BUSINESS RESOURCES WHAT IS A SPECIAL SERVICE AREA (SSA)?

O

ften known as Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) in other cities, SSAs provide a reliable means to create, maintain and manage commercial districts – keeping them clean, attractive and competitive. There are over 50 active SSAs in Chicago, which provide services for most major shopping and dining corridors. In Lincoln Park, there are two such areas: Clark Street and Lincoln Avenue. SSA services are only provided to businesses and properties located within the specific boundaries of each district. SSAs provide services that are not provided by the City of Chicago or are in addition to city services. An appointed Commission of local business and property owners governs each SSA, and the Chicago Department of Planning and Development oversees the program.

HOW IS THE LPCC INVOLVED? Each SSA Commission determines the services and budget for the district. The Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce (LPCC) acts as the service provider for the Clark Street and Lincoln Avenue SSAs, developing programs, coordinating services and managing subcontractors as directed by the SSA Commissions.
