Box 504 Lindsay, OK 73052 (405) 756-4312 The Lindsay Chamber of Commerce exists to advance the civic, economic and business interests of Lindsay by promoting commerce, leadership and education. The Lindsay Chamber of Commerce invites you to our community, which was once described by General John C. Fremont, in his report to the U.S. Government in 1849, as the “Garden of Eden.” Fremont said, “If there is a garden of Eden in the western hemisphere, it is in the Washita Valley,” this valley being the third most fertile valley in the world. Come visit our town, meet our people and revel in the quality of life that has become our heritage. We look forward to
making your acquaintance! We know you’ll love our small town. Violet Henderson Chamber Director Facebook: Lindsay, OK Chamber of Commerce lchamber1@windstream.net

THE FOUNDING OF LINDSAY By Mrs. Lewis Lindsay Alzira Powell, my mother, and Frank Murray were married at Fort Arbuckle in 1870. She was of Indian ancestry, a descendant of Alzira Folsom, a sister of Davis Folsom, who was the chief of the Choctaw Nation. After living at Paul’s Valley one year they moved to Erin Springs, so named because Murray was an Irishman and the first settler. Before the post office was established, it was called Elm Springs because of a large elm tree by the springs. Frank Murray built a home on the same site that the present mansion now stands. This was a log home, but roomy and comfortable. There were four rooms, a hall and a front and back porch extending the full length of the building. It had huge fireplaces with windows on each side. There we lived until the rock house was built by John Coyle in 1881. He had come to Erin Springs shortly after Frank Murray. He also built Smith Paul a rock house at Smith Paul’s Valley. The Murray house was built of native stone quarried about six miles south of Erin Springs. It was originally a two-story house and in 1902, a third story was added and a few other changes were made, one
4
being a coat of cement put on the stone walls. When I was 6 years old, Miss Maggie Bowen came to teach my brother John and me. We were both young to have a teacher, but in those days they were scarce and my father had a chance to get Miss Bowen, who had been teaching Dr. Shirley’s children near Cherokee town. He brought her here to live with us. After she had been here a short time, he built a school house and she taught still living in our home. My father paid her $30 per month plus room and board. Any children living in the settlement could go to school there. Miss Maggie, as everyone called her, later married John Coyle who built the mansion house. Sophia McCaughey, my grandmother, came to Erin Springs one year after we did and built a home on the old McCaughey place and lived there until her death; her son was the first postmaster of Erin Springs. After a short time, people began to drift into Erin Springs and build cabin homes and tend a few acres of land. Mr. Murray began to farm, at first a small acreage near his home, then in the rich valley of the Washita. His first farm was known as the old hedge farm, fenced with bois d’arc posts. Gradually his farm extended until it

ran almost 10 miles up and down the Washita River on the north side. He was a big-hearted Irishman and would furnish his renters with wagon and team, implements and grub for a year and let them put in so many acres of land, they pay him in rent. That is the way he managed to get in so large a tract of farming land in the Washita Valley. The south side of the river was adapted to cattle grazing. They were turned out on the range and looked after by the cowboys. Indian corn was the main crop, which averaged 50 and 60 bushels per acre and sold for as much as $2 per bushel. Crop failures was unheard of in those days. The government road ran between Fort Sill and Fort Caddo. Long wagon trains drawn by pairs of oxen carried food and other supplies from Caddo, the nearest shopping point to Fort Sill and Reno. These freighters were sometimes a lawless lot, Jesse James being one of them; however he was not an outlaw at this time and acted like a perfect gentleman on his visits to Erin Springs. The stage coach carried the mail along this route twice a week. Sometimes there were a few passengers. One man and a team made a moderate day’s drive and then a new man and fresh team started another day's drive. Thus, the long, lonely trips from Fort Sill to Caddo. Stage stands along the way, which were regular stopping places were Rush Springs, Whitebead and Pauls Valley. The drivers of the stage coaches were welcome visitors because they brought news from the outside world, and often warned
of Indian outbreaks, so that the settlers could prepare for them. Often, the driver was killed by Indians or outlaws but always the horses made the journey alone to the nearest stage stand. In those days it was custom to go armed, but my father was fearless, peaceful and easy to get along with and never carried firearms. His friends all liked and respected him. I remember hearing General Cabell tell the story of a battle that took place on Cabell Creek near the present crossing. One evening near sundown, the general and a handful of soldiers were camped for the night on the creek on their way back to Fort Arbuckle. They were surprised by a small band of Indians and a battle took place. No soldiers were killed, but eight Indians lost their lives. They were buried on the hill where the Murray home was later built. In excavating for a cellar, four skeletons were found. Plenty of arrowheads have been found in the Lindsay field near the creek, also around the old school house where the Indians camped for days at a time. Erin Springs, by the time the Santa Fe railroad was built through Pauls Valley and Purcell, had become a very thriving little village, with a dozen or more comfortable cottages, two stores, one of which had a post office, and a drug store, a blacksmith shop, a school house and a Masonic hall combined, which also served as a church. People thought nothing of riding 30 or 40 miles in a buggy to attend picnics, barbecues and religious gatherings. A very good life it was. lindsaychamberofcommerce.com

LINDSAY SANTA FE RAILROAD DEPOT The Lindsay Santa Fe Depot, located at 107 North Main Street in Lindsay, OK was constructed in the year 1903. Its current location was at one time the property of Lewis Lindsay, who donated the fertile Washita Valley agricultural region acreage to the Santa Fe Railroad Company. When the Santa Fe started laying their tracks west from Pauls Valley, the Rock Island Railroad Company started laying east toward Lindsay, where the two lines met. In 1942, the Rock Island tracks were removed. This depot was established to provide connections with the rich fertile areas of present-day Pauls Valley, Chickasha, and other surrounding areas for shipping goods such as broomcorn, cotton and agriculture products to various markets in Oklahoma. The Lindsay Depot handled freight and
passenger service. The depot retained its role as a shipping/receiving center until its closing in 1985. The Lindsay Santa Fe Railroad Depot is listed on the Nation’s Register as one of the two oldest Santa Fe Depots in South-Central Oklahoma. It is one of the best two remaining examples of vernacular architecture as applied to railroad stations in the early 1900s.

MURRAY LINDSAY MANSION
The Lindsay Historical Society operates two historic museums in the Erin Springs Community just south of Lindsay off highway 76. The beautiful three-story Murray Lindsay Mansion was the home of Frank and Alzira Murray and still stands as a legacy in this community in Garvin County. The home was occupied by Lewis and Anita
Lindsay until the 1960s and was redecorated by their daughter Tess Lindsay. Many beautiful Lindsay family heirlooms and pieces of furniture have been maintained through donations from the family and community. Tours are available Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and group tours are available by appointment.
LINDSAY BROOMCORN SWEEPS THE WORLD A CHANGE IS COMING In 1906 broomcorn was introduced into Lindsay by Fred Tinch and his father-in-law Robert Watkins. Fred and his wife, Inez Watkins Tinch, along with the Watkins moved from Illinois and brought only the best grade of seed. Soon, others such as Thomas Lyons, W. K. Donnell, Scott, Harry and Earl Moore moved into the valley and started growing and buying broomcorn. In 1907 Watkins Company built the first broomcorn storage warehouse. The largest shipment from Lindsay was 1,350 car loads in 1920. Lindsay grew the finest quality of broomcorn in the world and was the largest broomcorn center in production. This corn was used for all grades of brooms.
8
Lindsay became a shipping point for other broomcorn districts because of such large storing facilities and transit privileges. The slogan “Lindsay Broomcorn sweeps the World” soon was heard around the world. Fred Tinch said the night he and Robert Watkins drove into Lindsay in a surrey, a cowboy was riding a mule down Main Street at full speed, yelling, “I’m a wolf with a red necktie,” and he was shooting his pistol every step of the way. They got by him and went on to the hotel. It was election day and everyone was shooting it up, Tinch later found out. After reaching the hotel, Tinch and Watkins asked the hotel manager if they could get a room and the manager replied, “I be damned if I tell you till I know who you are.”

PIKES PEAK SCHOOL The Pikes Peak Museum, a two-room school operated in the Pikes Peak Community until 1958, is located across from the Murray Lindsay Mansion. Many photos of school years and other historical items are on display. The school has been restored and continues to be maintained through donations from Pikes Peak alumni and others. Several events are held in the school museum including the Homecoming on the last Saturday of July and Christmas at the Mansion on the first Sunday of December. Group and individual tours are scheduled by
appointment, and school tours are offered as a step back in time of what it was like to attend a rural school. To schedule a tour of either museum, call (405) 756-2121 and leave a message.
OIL COMES TO LINDSAY On Nov. 21, 1944, Cities Service Oil Company released a location to be drilled in the center of SW, NW, Section 22-5N-4W, McClain County. This well was a wildcat located in the hills of north Lindsay, which were adequate for farm travel but wouldn’t handle the heavy oil field trucks necessary to move tools into the location. After the roads and bridges were constructed or rebuilt, the location was leveled, the derrick was built and Loffland Brothers Drilling Company moved in a rotary drilling rig and commenced drilling the first oil well in Lindsay. The Lawson “A” No. 1 was 10,955 feet deep. The initial production was 852 barrels in eight hours through a ¾-inch choke. The well was completed on Oct. 26, 1945. This well opened a new field in the Golden Trend area of Lindsay and intensified drilling activity that caused major companies
and independents to play the area around Lindsay despite the cost of leases and the deep and expensive drilling at the time. A lot has changed since the first well. The holes became bigger and deeper, the pipe being used is a much higher grade and wells are drilled horizontally. Major improvements in drill bits, drilling mud, fracking techniques and improved well logging have drastically decreased the length of time to complete a well; also, roustabout service at that time was done by hand tools. Now roustabouts service is done by power tools. As time progressed, men have gained experience with drilling. Lindsay has been through many oil booms since the Golden Trend that began in 1945. Hopefully, with the continued knowledge from geologists and improved techniques, the oil industry here will continue for centuries to come. lindsaychamberofcommerce.com

LINDSAY PUBLIC SCHOOLS BY DAN CHAPMAN Superintendent of Lindsay Schools The Lindsay Public School System has a tradition of excellence in both academic and co-curricular pursuits. In 1954 the Lindsay Public School System became a pioneer by setting standards beyond those required by the state when the school became one of the first 10 schools in Oklahoma to achieve total accreditation by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges, a rigorous monitor of school achievement throughout the United States, now known as Advanc ED. To this day, Lindsay Schools maintain this tradition at all levels, from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. During the 2015-16 school year, Lindsay Public Schools underwent its five-year, in-depth, on-site accreditation evaluation and received very high scores. In further recognition of excellence, Lindsay Schools were recently named to a list of the top 10 schools in Oklahoma (including both large and small, rural and urban) compiled by the U S. News and World Report magazine.
A plan for future growth Lindsay school patrons, along with the school administration and staff, began to recognize in the last decade the need for updating and adding to existing school plant facilities. Incorporating people from all walks of life in the community, a fact-gathering committee began discussions to seek out diverse opinions within the community about the future needs of the district. This process culminated in 2014 with a formal presentation to the Lindsay Board of Education, outlining a plan for future growth of school facilities. A year-long campaign to inform the voting public about school needs resulted in a bond issue passage in September 2015. Included in the bond issue were facilities that will enhance the educational opportunities of all Lindsay school children. A new fifth grade center is being built in the elementary school. New safe rooms and band practice rooms are being incorporated into the new basketball arena.
10
Lindsay Public School System 800 W. Creek St. Lindsay, OK 73052 Phone: (405) 756‑3131 Fax: (405) 756‑8819 In addition to its use as a basketball facility, the new arena will house school events such as high school graduation ceremonies, which have outgrown the old facilities. A new field house, concessions, and football stadium will provide a totally new facility for football and track athletes with its incorporated track. In addition to building new facilities, renovations to other areas of the school are part of the longterm plan for school improvement. The agriculture show barns and facilities include a new commons area for meetings, new concession areas and restroom facilities. Though plans are not firmly in place, other projected plans include renovation of existing band rooms and the gym weight room as possible sites for new state-of-the art technology classrooms. Through the foresight of progressive Lindsay patrons, the Lindsay Board of Education and Lindsay school staff, the current and future physical needs of district students are in the process of being built or in the planning stages.
Achieving academic excellence As a result of the school’s dedication to high standards, Lindsay students have annually been recognized among the top academic students in the state. Lindsay High School academic teams have reached the state finals of the Aca-

demic Bowl Competition nine times, becoming the state runner-up twice, placing third once and fourth twice. Sixteen LHS students have been named Academic Bowl All-Staters, along with one Honorable Mention Academic Bowl AllStater. In addition, 12 LHS students (in competition with students from all classes of schools in Oklahoma, both large and small) have been selected as Academic AllStaters, the highest academic honor bestowed upon high school students in our state. In addition to academic bowl competition, high school students have opportunities to attend scholastic meets during the school year at which they compete against students from other schools within the region. Lindsay students consistently perform well in these academic and fine arts scholastic meets.
Providing support to students Through the past six years, Lindsay Elementary School has created and implemented a tiered system of supports to assist students with academic and behavioral needs. This system is part of the Oklahoma Tiered Intervention System of Supports (OTISS) and has proven to significantly reduce the number of behavior referrals to the office as well as the number of students who have been referred to special education services. The benefits and intangibles of the OTISS program extend far beyond its measurable outcomes and improve the educational progress of all students across the curriculum. Lindsay Elementary also adopted a Walkto-Read program at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year that allows students who need assistance because of skill gaps to receive intervention. It also provides opportunities for students with above-grade-level skills to go to enrichment classes for more challenging projects. Through the implementation of these programs and the dedication of many skilled, hardworking teachers, assistants and other staff, Lindsay Elementary has earned the honor
of achieving OTISS Model School status this year, becoming one of only two schools in the state with this distinction.
Agricultural accomplishments To describe the accomplishments of our FFA program would require long and lengthy lists of students who achieve at high levels. Our local FFA chapter was named in 2016 as a State Superior Three Star Chapter. Local FF A students are enrolled in Future Teach Ag-Ed academies to ensure the quality of tomorrow’s agriculture-related teachers, qualifying these students for scholarships from Oklahoma State University when they enter the agricultural education program at OSU. FFA students in Lindsay have received state FFA degrees; participate in speech competitions; show animals at the local, county, state and national levels; and compete in numerous career development events. In fact, the local FFA chapter participates in all opportunities afforded by the FFA program. Active in the arts The LHS fine arts program is another outlet for student expression. The art department sends students to art and scholastic competitions throughout the state. The Lindsay Band program has grown by leaps and bounds. As a result of growth and dedication, the Lindsay High School Band was the 2013 Oklahoma Bandmasters Association Class 2A State Champion Marching Band. Each year, individual Lindsay band members try out for and often achieve all-state band status. In addition, vocal students compete in lindsaychamberofcommerce.com

all regional and state contests and consistently receive high marks.
Success in sports Athletically, Lindsay Schools are known throughout the state for excellence in all sports, each sport having had its successes in recent years: girls’ cross country has qualified for the state meet for the last three years; the football team was a state semi-finalist in 2011, and most recently, were undefeated in the regular season, claiming the 2016 District Championship; the high school girls’ basketball team made an appearance in the state tournament in 2013; high school boys’ basketball claimed the conference title in 2016; competitive cheer competed in the 2014 state competition; boys’ and girls’ track teams routinely compete in the state track meet both as teams and as individuals; softball and baseball teams advance in the playoffs on a regular basis; and boys’ golf competed in the state tourney in 2016. With the passage of a 2015 bond issue, Lindsay athletes will soon be competing in some of the newest and best facilities available to high school athletes in Oklahoma. More importantly, however, Lindsay Schools demand excellence from their athletes in the classroom as well as in the competitive arena. Leop-
ards consider themselves first and foremost scholar-athletes. While no one can predict the future, we know that the Lindsay School System is headed in a positive direction because of the evident successes of its students and the modernization of facilities.
Goals for success The mission statement of Lindsay Public Schools summarizes the district-wide goal for student success: “Empowering all students for success in an ever-changing world.” The present age is a challenging but exciting time to be in education. The administration, staff, and board of education of Lindsay Public Schools are thankful for the opportunities to serve the students of the community and welcome the aid of concerned patrons in the quest for excellence in education here in Lindsay, Oklahoma .
GRIFFITH SPORTS COMPLEX The Lindsay Youth Council was established in 1993, through the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce and president at that time, Bronc Jackson. He and his committee formed the Lindsay Youth Council and spent hundreds of hours making this project a dream come true. The land was purchased and donated by J.K. Griffith. The council is committed to serving the youth of our town and surrounding communities. The six-field complex that consists of two T-ball fields, two softball fields and two baseball fields, hosts slow-pitch softball, fast-pitch softball, T-ball, baseball, co-ed softball, and Lindsay Middle School and High School Softball events. The council is currently working to establish qualifying tournaments as well as other tourna-
12
ments throughout the spring and summer. Griffith Park in Lindsay is a great complex built with the vision to be the best in this area. Under the direction of the Youth Council, the park was built and has continued to grow through volunteer work. Many improvements have been made in the last few years, such as shaded picnic tables, shaded bleachers, and the planting of 20 trees to add shade to the park.
