THE FOUNDING OF LINDSAY By Anita Murray Lindsay, 1869-1963

few other changes were made, one being a coat of cement put on the stone walls. When I was 6 years old, Miss Maggie Bowen came to teach my brother John and me. We were both young to have a teacher, but in those days they were scarce and my father had a chance to get Miss Bowen, who had been teaching Dr. Shirley’s children near Cherokee town. He brought her here to live with us. After she had been here a short time, he built a school house and she taught still living in our home. My father paid her $30 per month plus room and board. Any children living in the settlement could go to school there. Miss Maggie, as everyone called her, later married John Coyle who built the mansion house. Sophia McCaughey, my grandmother, came to Erin Springs one year after we did and built a home on the old McCaughey place and lived there until her death; her son was the first postmaster of Erin Springs. After a short time, people began to drift into Erin Springs and build cabin homes and tend a few acres of land. Mr. Murray began to farm, at first a small acreage near his home, then in the rich valley of the Washita. His first farm was known as the old hedge farm, fenced with bois d’arc posts. Gradually his farm extended until it ran almost 10 miles up and down the Washita River on the north side.

Alzira Powell, my mother, and Frank Murray were married at Fort Arbuckle in 1870. She was of Indian ancestry, a descendant of Alzira Folsom, a sister of Davis Folsom, who was the chief of the Choctaw Nation. After living at Paul’s Valley one year they moved to Erin Springs, so named because Murray was an Irishman and the first settler. Before the post office was established, it was called Elm Springs because of a large elm tree by the springs. Frank Murray built a home on the same site that the present mansion now stands. This was a log home, but roomy and comfortable. There were four rooms; a hall and a front and back porch extending the full length of the building. It had huge fireplaces with windows on each side. There we lived until the rock house was built by John Coyle in 1881. He had come to Erin Springs shortly after Frank Murray. He also built Smith Paul a rock house at Smith Paul’s Valley. The Murray house was built of native stone quarried about six miles south of Erin Springs. It was originally a two-story house and in 1902, a third story was added and a

He was a bighearted Irishman and would furnish his renters with wagon and team, implements and grub for a year and let them put in so many acres of land, they pay him in rent. That is the way he managed to get in so large a tract of farming land in the Washita Valley. The south side of the river was adapted to cattle grazing. They were turned out on the range and looked after by the cowboys. Indian corn was the main crop, which averaged 50 and 60 bushels per acre and sold for as much as $2 per bushel. Crop failures was unheard of in those days. The government road ran between Fort Sill and Fort Caddo. Long wagon trains drawn by pairs of oxen carried food and other supplies from Caddo, the nearest shopping point to Fort Sill and Reno. These freighters were sometimes a lawless lot, Jesse James being one of them; however he was not an outlaw at this time and acted like a perfect gentleman on his visits to Erin Springs. The stage coach carried the mail along this route twice a week. Sometimes there were a few passengers. One man and a team made a moderate day’s drive and then a new man and fresh team started another day’s drive. Thus, the long, lonely trips from Fort Sill to Caddo. Stage stands along the way, which were regular stopping places were Rush Springs, Whitebead and Pauls Valley. The drivers of the stage coaches were welcome visitors because they brought news from the outside world, and often warned of Indian outbreaks, so that the settlers could prepare for them. Often, the driver was killed by Indians or outlaws but always 2019-2020 Chamber Directory

the horses made the journey alone to the nearest stage stand. In those days it was custom to go armed, but my father was fearless, peaceful and easy to get along with and never carried firearms. His friends all liked and respected him. I remember hearing General Cabell tell the story of a battle that took place on Cabell Creek near the present crossing. One evening near sundown, the general and a handful of soldiers were camped for the night on the creek on their way back to Fort Arbuckle. They were surprised by a small band of Indians and a battle took place. No soldiers were killed, but eight Indians lost their lives. They were buried on the hill where the Murray home was later built. In excavating for a cellar, four skeletons were found. Plenty of arrowheads have been found in the Lindsay field near the creek, also around the old school house where the Indians camped for days at a time. Erin Springs, by the time the Santa Fe railroad was built through Pauls Valley and Purcell, had become a very thriving little village, with a dozen or more comfortable cottages, two stores, one of which had a post office, and a drug store, a blacksmith shop, a school house and a Masonic hall combined, which also served as a church. People thought nothing of riding 30 or 40 miles in a buggy to attend picnics, barbecues and religious gatherings. A very good life it was. Anita Murray Lindsay was born in 1869 to Alzira McCaughey Powell and John Powell, who died two months after her birth. Alzira met and married Frank Murray in 1871. In 1889, Anita married Lewis Lindsay. 9

LINDSAY SANTA FE RAILROAD DEPOT The Lindsay Santa Fe Depot at 107 N. Main St. in Lindsay was constructed in 1903. Its current location was at one time the property of Lewis Lindsay, who donated the fertile Washita Valley agricultural region acreage to the Santa Fe Railroad Company. When the Santa Fe started laying tracks west from Pauls Valley, the Rock Island Railroad Company started laying east toward

Lindsay, where the two lines met. In 1942, the Rock Island tracks were removed. This depot was established to provide connections with the rich, fertile areas of present-day Pauls Valley, Chickasha and other surrounding areas for shipping goods such as broomcorn, cotton and agriculture products to various markets in Oklahoma. The Lindsay Depot handled freight and passenger service. The depot retained its role as a shipping/ receiving center until its closing in 1985. The Lindsay Santa Fe Railroad Depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the two oldest Santa Fe Depots in South-Central Oklahoma. It is one of the best two remaining examples of vernacular architecture as applied to railroad stations in the early 1900s.

MURRAY LINDSAY MANSION by their daughter Tess Lindsay. Many beautiful Lindsay family heirlooms and pieces of furniture have been maintained through donations from the family and community. The mansion is open from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. To arrange a tour at a different time, call (405) 756-6502 or (405) 919-6146.

The Lindsay Historical Society operates two historic museums in the Erin Springs Community just south of Lindsay off highway 76. The beautiful three-story Murray Lindsay Mansion was the home of Frank and Alzira Murray and still stands as a legacy in this community in Garvin County. Lewis and Anita Lindsay lived in the home until the 1960s, and it was redecorated

LINDSAY BROOMCORN SWEEPS THE WORLD In 1906, broomcorn was introduced into Lindsay by Fred Tinch and his father-in-law Robert Watkins. Fred and his wife, Inez Watkins Tinch, along with the Watkins, moved from Illinois and brought only the best grade of seed. Soon, others such as Thomas Lyons, W. K. Donnell, Scott, Harry and Earl Moore moved into the valley and started growing and buying broomcorn. In 1907, Watkins Company built the first broomcorn storage warehouse. The largest shipment from Lindsay was 1,350 car loads in 1920. Lindsay grew the finest quality of broomcorn in the world and was the largest broomcorn center in production. This corn was used for all grades of brooms. Lindsay became a shipping point for Lindsay Chamber of Commerce

OK-LIN-CD-19 Design.indd 12

other broomcorn districts because of such large storing facilities and transit privileges. The slogan “Lindsay Broomcorn sweeps the World” soon was heard around the world. Tinch said the night he and Watkins drove into Lindsay in a surrey, a cowboy was riding a mule down Main Street at full speed, yelling, “I’m a wolf with a red necktie,” and he was shooting his pistol every step of the way. They got by him and went on to the hotel. It was election day and everyone was shooting it up, Tinch later found out. After reaching the hotel, Tinch and Watkins asked the hotel manager if they could get a room and the manager replied, “I be damned if I tell you till I know who you are.”

PIKES PEAK SCHOOL The Pikes Peak Museum, a two-room school that operated in the Pikes Peak community until 1958, sits across from the Murray Lindsay Mansion. Many photos of school years and other historical items are on display. The school has been restored and is maintained through donations from Pikes Peak alumni and others. Several events are held in the school museum including the Homecoming on the last Saturday of July and Christmas at the Mansion on the first Sunday of December. Group and individual tours are scheduled

by appointment, and school tours are offered as a step back in time of what it was like to attend a rural school. To schedule a tour of either museum, call (405) 756-6502 or 405-919-6146.

OIL COMES TO LINDSAY On Nov. 21, 1944, Cities Service Oil Company released a location to be drilled in the center of SW, NW, Section 22-5N-4W, McClain County. This well was a wildcat located in the hills of north Lindsay, which were adequate for farm travel but wouldn’t handle the heavy oil field trucks necessary to move tools into the location. After the roads and bridges were constructed or rebuilt, the location was leveled, the derrick was built and Loffland Brothers Drilling Company moved in a rotary drilling rig and commenced drilling the first oil well in Lindsay. The Lawson “A” No. 1 was 10,955 feet deep. The initial production was 852 barrels in eight hours through a three-quarter-inch choke. Completed on Oct. 26, 1945, this well opened a new field in the Golden Trend area of Lindsay and intensified drilling activity, 2019-2020 Chamber Directory

OK-LIN-CD-19 Design.indd 13

causing major companies and independents to play the area around Lindsay despite the cost of leases and the deep and expensive drilling at the time. A lot has changed since the first well. The holes became bigger and deeper, the pipe being used is a much higher grade and wells are drilled horizontally. Major improvements in drill bits, drilling mud, fracking techniques and improved well logging have drastically decreased the length of time to complete a well; also, roustabout service at that time was done by hand tools. Now roustabouts service is done by power tools. Lindsay has been through many oil booms since the Golden Trend that began in 1945. Hopefully, with the continued knowledge from geologists and improved techniques, the oil industry here will continue for centuries to come. 13

LINDSAY PUBLIC SCHOOLS By Dan Chapman Superintendent of Lindsay Schools

barns and facilities include new commons area for meetings, concessions areas and restroom facilities. Other projected plans include renovating existing space for state-of-the-art technology classrooms, funded by another and most recent bond passage. Through the foresight of progressive Lindsay patrons, the Lindsay Board of Education and Lindsay School staff, the current and future physical needs of students have been ensured. Lindsay students have annually been recognized among the top academic students in the state. Lindsay High School academic teams reach the State Academic Bowl Competition with regularity. Countless Lindsay High School students have been named Academic and Honorable Mention Academic Bowl All-Staters. Lindsay Elementary and Middle School have also initiated competitive academic teams. In addition, 12 LHS students have been selected Academic All-Staters the highest academic honor bestowed upon

The Lindsay Public School System has a tradition of excellence. In 1954, we became one of the first 10 schools in Oklahoma to achieve total accreditation by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges, now known as AdvanceED. To this day, Lindsay Schools maintain this tradition. We were also named in the recent past to a list of the top ten schools in Oklahoma compiled by U.S. News & World Report. During the last decade, Lindsay school patrons, administrators and staff recognized the need for improving school plant facilities. A year-long campaign resulted in a bond issue passage in September 2015. A new fifth grade center was built in the elementary school. New safe rooms and band and band practice rooms were incorporated into a new basketball arena. A new field house, concessions and football stadium provide new facilities for both football and track athletes with its incorporated track. The agricultural show

school students in our state. During the last decade, Lindsay Elementary School implemented a tiered system of supports to assist students with academic and behavioral needs. This system is part of the Oklahoma Tiered Intervention System of Supports and has significantly reduced the number of behavior referrals to the office as well as the number of students who have been

referred to special education services. Lindsay Elementary earned distinction as an OTISS Model School, one of only two schools in the state afforded that honor. The Lindsay Future Farmers of America program has a long history of success. FFA students work toward both chapter and individual awards. In fact, the local chapter participates in all dimensions of the FFA program, ranging from animal science to speech competitions to career development. The high school’s fine arts program is ď ľ

another outlet for student expression. The art department sends students annually to art and scholastic competitions. The Lindsay High School Band was the 2013 Oklahoma Band Masters Class 2-A State Champion Marching Band, and in addition, vocal students competing in all regional and state contests consistently receiving high marks. Athletically, Lindsay Schools are known throughout the state for excellence in all sports. With the passage of the 2015 bond issue, Lindsay athletes now compete in some of the newest and best facilities available

to high school athletes in Oklahoma. More importantly, we demand excellence from our athletes in the classroom as well as in the competitive arena. Leopards consider themselves scholar-athletes. We know that the Lindsay School System is headed in a positive direction because of the evident successes of our students and the modernization of facilities. The mission statement of Lindsay Public Schools summarizes the district-wide goal for student success: “Empowering all students for success in an ever-changing worlds.

GRIFFITH SPORTS COMPLEX The council is currently working to establish qualifying tournaments as well as other tournaments throughout the spring and summer. Griffith Park in Lindsay is a great complex built with the vision to be the best in this area. Under the direction of the Youth Council, the park was built and flourishes through volunteer work. Recent improvements and additions include shaded picnic tables, shaded bleachers and 20 trees planted to add shade to the park. The Lindsay Youth Council is committed to serving the youth of our town and surrounding communities.

The Lindsay Youth Council was established in 1993, through the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce and president at that time, Bronc Jackson. He and his committee formed the Lindsay Youth Council and spent hundreds of hours making this project a dream come true. The land was purchased and donated by J.K. Griffith. This six-field complex that consists of two T-ball fields, two softball fields and two baseball fields, hosts slow-pitch softball, fast-pitch softball, T-ball, baseball, co-ed softball and Lindsay Middle School and High School Softball events.
