LODI Presents its Past

Lodi recently turned 110 years old at the end of 2016, but it only grows stronger and wiser with age. The city’s rich heritage is preserved and celebrated at several spots in town, including museums and public art. Here are a few suggested stops for history buffs. S AN J OAQUIN MUS EUM One facility, bursting with stories and artifacts, is the San Joaquin County Historical Society & Museum. This museum, at Micke Grove Park, showcases life all the way back to when Lodi was founded. Particularly interesting is that it charts the progression from the area’s first farmer all the way to modern agriculture. Displays include hand tools and equipment through the years. The museum boasts eight exhibit buildings and four historic buildings, including the 1848 Weber house and the 1866 Calaveras School. H ILL H OUS E MUS EUM This turn-of-the-century Victorian – built and owned by famous early-Lodians George and Mary Hill – is filled with many of the original furnishings and artifacts. Docent-led tours that include tales of the life and times of the Hill family are offered on Sundays. Although great pains were taken to keep the house true to the times, it isn’t set in its original place. In 1948, the house was moved about six blocks. It traveled from School Street to its current location: 826 South Church. At that point, some changes were mandated in order to bring the house up to code, and an upstairs room was added. LODI ALL-V ETER ANS PLAZA MEMORI A L The area between city hall and Carnegie Forum has been transformed into a state-of-the-art living tribute to our nation’s veterans. The plaza, which was dedicated in 2002, incorporates various artistic elements, representing service and sacrifice to our country. The 21.5-foot stainless steel obelisk honors courage and graces the plaza entrance. As you enter the plaza, 13 granite stones are engraved with poetry from both historical figures as well as local artists. An eternal flame (representing valor and sacrifice) burns in the center of a 16-foot-tall curved granite wall, which serves as a backdrop for a beautiful waterfall.

WALLDOG MUR ALS The city commissioned the “pack” of highly-skilled and world-renowned Walldog painters to create nine murals throughout town during a three-day birthday celebration in 2006. VISION 2020 Creating Lodi s Economic Future

Not one to rest on its laurels, the Lodi Chamber of Commerce is in the middle of a five-year plan to ensure Lodi’s economic future. Vision 2020 is an economic plan drafted by the Lodi Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors to ensure Lodi’s best days are the days ahead. The plan is a visioning project driven by what volunteers and community stakeholders have said they would like to see Lodi “be like, look like, and work like” in 2020. The community has been so receptive to the concept that it has taken on a larger purpose, evolving into a true city-wide effort. Those involved include health care professionals, local school teachers and principals, business owners and employees, city council members, faith leaders, nonprofit executives, and, of course, individual citizens. The broad-range plan lays out 55 goals, some short-term and some long-term. It’s a concerted effort to ensure that Lodi’s best days lie ahead, according to Pat Patrick, Chamber CEO and President. The project started with 100 people in five “vision action teams” – or VATS – that cover the following categories: economic competitiveness, livability, tourism, workforce development, and business and community health. E C O NO M I C C OM PE T I T I V E N E S S The chief strategy here is to clearly communicate the critical need for economic improvement to and for all citizens of Lodi. Part of that includes an emphasis to shop and eat locally. Another goal is to have an ongoing effort for targeted job creation through attracting new businesses to Lodi. Lastly, the city wants to help existing businesses expand to create more jobs. Under the 2020 plan, certain small and mid-size companies are being identified with potential to grow jobs. Another strategy is to identify local seasoned experts who can act as “economic gardeners” to cultivate local businesses. L I VABI L I T Y Prime, desirable livability is key to drawing young families to town. Lodi leaders have recognized the need for a new generation to choose to work, play and live here. One goal is to develop more family-oriented anchor attractions. Lodi’s charm is in its downtown, its deep roots and farming values; and in its identity as an established wine destination. In fact, “Wine Enthusiast Magazine” named Lodi the No. 1 Wine Region in the World. One of the next steps is to solidify pride in its diversity through establishing inclusive leadership. Two other major livability-improvement strategies are to support agriculture that is so much a part of Lodi’s fabric, as well as to secure a post-secondary education institution in town. In addition, the city is focused on Asset-Based Community Development – ABCD for short. For Lodi, that means approaching the preservation of the Heritage District from a new angle. Instead of trying to frequently react and problem-solve in a historic area that has recently had some poverty issues, Vision 2020 is focusing on the assets and how

to grow from those, according to the Chamber’s President.

   

TOUR IS M Tourism is a major source of jobs and income for Lodi, with many downtown merchants noting that they receive up to 60 percent of revenue from tourists. Members of the Tourism VAT envision visitors returning multiple times to experience premium wines, farm-to-table cuisine, unique retail and expanding cultural attractions. Major strategies to increase visitor flow into Lodi include the following: Creating a comprehensive way-finding program, which primarily focuses on improving signage Enhancing the downtown experience Developing coordinated branding to help promote Lodi Using existing facilities in a more optimal way to host events

WOR K F OR C E DEV ELOPMENT Essential to the future of workforce development is the Lodi Jobs Academy – a partnership with businesses that are part of the Chamber’s Lodi Industrial Group, the Workforce Development VAT and the Lodi Unified School District’s Career Tech Department. The aim is to have job creators work with the schools who prepare students for jobs, by teaching what the businesses need them to know to succeed in that field. The businesses design the curriculum. Employers also provide students with plant tours, Manufacturing Day, internships, scholarships and jobs. A large skills-gap vacuum of needed skills was created by the many retiring Baby Boomers. The Lodi Jobs Academy is a plus for employers, and it’s a plus for students who want to be in-demand in the job market soon. A major component of this is promoting STEM classes and skills. The Vision 2020 plan has made sure this kind of education starts in middle school and carries on throughout higher education. Seventy percent of jobs over the next 10-15 years will not require a bachelor’s degree or greater, according to the Chamber. So an accreditation from a junior college or a professional certificate from a skills panel from Lincoln Tech in the Heritage District will help learners get a wage that can support a family. B US INES S AND C OMMUNITY H EALTH And lastly, Vision 2020 volunteers are working diligently to see the big picture of a robust city – one that includes the literal health of citizens, too. The Heart of Lodi

While Lodi is arguably best known for its wine, its downtown is equally magnetic for visitors and residents alike. This gathering spot offers a variety of shops, eateries and other attractions. In the late ’90s, downtown received a shot in the arm with the School Street revitalization project, which involved laying old-fashioned brick streets, inlaid golden sidewalks, informational kiosks, a parking garage and movie theater and 30-foot Sycamore trees. Now, about 20 years later, School Street also has become known for its “wine strolls” and many other community events. Visitors here might first notice one of the city’s most prominent landmarks: the Mission Arch. The 40-foot arch was built in 1907 and is topped with a gold-leaf covered California state bear. The general downtown area offers a plethora of eateries, galleries, tasting rooms, coffee shops, clothing boutiques, antique shops and more. (See below for a current list of what the downtown offers.)

S O M E D O W NT OW N H I GH L I GH T S One gem is Hutchins Street Square. Many consider this community center to be the crown jewel of Lodi. An anchor for the downtown, it’s a gathering place and a popular performing arts theater that features plays, ballet and live music. Perhaps even more remarkable is that this community asset was born out of the ashes of a burnt and abandoned school building back in 1979. This venue offers community programs for all ages, including arts, adult day care, and the Camp Hutchins Child Care. It also houses an indoor pool. And many a wedding has been celebrated in its banquet facilities. Another must-see is the World of Wonders Science Museum. The WOW museum takes a handson approach to stimulating interest and learning in all ages. Come away with some new facts about electricity, energy, magnetism, eyesight and more. You’ll forget you’re

learning through more than 50 tactile exhibits and challenges such as a Lego-building raceway; Cranium Corner, which consists of puzzles and brain-teasers; and the Jim Pyers Illumination Lab, where visitors can soak up knowledge about the science of light. One of Lodi’s focal points is some spectacular public art with an interesting backstory. In May 2006, Lodi marked its 100th birthday by commissioning a group of 50 artists called the Walldogs. In just one weekend, they feverishly created nine murals depicting the town’s fascinating heritage. Some of the paintings have a humorous bent, while others are historical. Lodi also boasts a multi-modal transportation hub that combines a train and bus station in one facility, allowing folks to ride the bus from anywhere in the county to the station and hop a train to the Bay Area or Old Sacramento for a day trip. Another main attraction is Lodi Stadium 12 Theatre, which draws thousands downtown every week. EV ENTS AND F ES TIVALS In addition to the downtown’s mainstays are a number of annual goings-on that are eagerly anticipated by locals and visitors alike. One example is the Lodi Street Faire, one of the largest antique and craft fairs in central California. More than 500 antique and craft vendors converge here the first Sunday in May and October. Another popular event is the School Street Strolls, which take place in April and October and offer an evening of delicious wine, food and shopping. There’s also the Lodi Sandhill Crane Festival, an annual celebration of the cranes’ migratory journey. The event, which recently marked its 20th anniversary, draws thousands of visitors to Lodi-area wildlife refuges and farmlands every November. Seasonal offerings in town include the Downtown Farmers Market,

from mid-May through September. Things turn particularly festive in early December for the Christmas Light Parade, which has been known to include about 80 lighted floats and 2,500-plus people on the floats. Tens of thousands of spectators come out to line the approximately mile-long parade route.

Lodi celebrates the sport each year with the Giro D’Vino bike tour in the fall, and the 50k-, 100k- and 100-mile Tour delle Vigne race in May. In June, both amateurs and pros descend on downtown streets for Cyclefest, a daylong event. What’s more, Bike Lodi – a group of local cyclists – has compiled a set of local routes and maps specifically for cyclists visiting from out of town. Rides range from five to 50 miles, with many including stops at wineries and cafes. With names like “Breakfast Burrito Bike Ride,” what’s not to love? Z O O FU N Another way to get wild is at the Micke Grove Zoo. Located in the heart of Micke Grove Regional Park, the zoo is home to native and exotic species from all over the world. Some noteworthy exhibits include the Tropical Forest Canopy, which is home to green iguanas and Prevost’s squirrels; and the Island Lost in Time, where visitors can spy lemurs, geckos and radiated tortoises. M U S E U MS Lodi has arts and culture offerings via several museums. They include the following:  The San Joaquin County Historical Museum, which provides a historical perspective of the region. It offers eight exhibition buildings; four historic buildings; room dioramas of Weber family furnishings (Captain Charles Weber was founder of Stockton and the first farmer in the area); a children’s gallery; and large displays of hand tools and

agricultural equipment. Visitors in December are treated to the museum’s annual Festival of Trees.  Another museum is the Hill House, which is a must-see for history and genealogy buffs. This turn-of-the-century Victorian house was built and owned by George and Mary Hill, an early Lodi family. The house is filled with many original furnishings and artifacts.  For a hands-on educational experience, look no further than The World of Wonders Science Museum. Located downtown, the museum’s mission is to get visitors involved in science-based exhibits and programs to stimulate discovery for all ages. PAR K S AND R EC Lodi’s Parks, Recreations and Cultural Services Department marks its 75th anniversary this year. A yearlong celebration has included monthly commemorative events. The park district’s mission is to improve the lives of residents in Lodi. In just the past year, the department has implemented several new attractions, including an annual spring egg hunt, a haunted house, and free outdoor concerts, at Hutchins Street Square. Located in the heart of the city, Hutchins Street Square is one of Lodi’s crown jewels. This event center is arguably the epicenter of the city, boasting many rooms and facilities, including a theater, amphitheater, halls, a rotunda and an indoor community pool. It houses programs including arts and specialty classes, adult day care, Camp Hutchins Child Care, the Youth Commission and the Arts Commission. The Lodi Primary Care Medical Center was formed in 1995 by a group of practitioners who wanted to provide more medical options to their patients. The center has grown into a practice of 22 primary care practitioners. Of the 22 practitioners, there are 15 family practitioners, six internists, three pediatricians and one physician assistant. The center’s goal is to provide the best medical care while being cost-effective for patients and their families. LPCMC works with the community to serve both adults and children in and around the Lodi area. The Delta Radiology Medical Group also serves the Lodi area. The Delta Radiology Medical Group serves St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Lodi Memorial Hospital, and San Joaquin Hospital. The group has 15 board-certified radiologists who provide outpatient services in Lodi, Manteca and Stockton. Services in Lodi include state-ofthe-art MRIs, mammograms, bone density studies, ultrasounds, CT scans, X-rays and open MRI. The Delta Radiology Group is dedicated to bringing the latest technology to its patients, providing the only digital mammogram that has computer aided detection and utilizes digital X-rays.

As the harvest is completed, members of the community coordinate the Grape Festival at the fairgrounds. The Fair has all the trappings of an old-time country fair – right down to blue-ribbon quilts, pickles and pies. The fun is oozing out from grape stomp contests to incredible billboard-size murals made from grapes! Of course, there is wine to taste and great food to eat and a carnival for the kids. NO VE M BE R- D E C E M B E R The Sandhill Crane Festival is headquartered at Hutchins Street Square early in November. The fest has over 60 wildlife tours going out in all directions. The 6,000 - 8,000 Sandhill Cranes that winter in Lodi are a

true spectacle of nature. Each crane stands at approximately five feet, and has a wingspan of seven feet. Every evening, the birds do their “fly-in” at sunset. The sky fills with these graceful flyers, and the orange harvest sunset provides a colorful backdrop. In December, the holiday-decorated downtown area plays host to The Parade of Lights. More than 80 lighted floats make their

way through twinkling tree-lined streets, and 40,000 friends and neighbors wave at one another in the glow of the town’s Christmas spirit. The Annual Festival of Trees at the San Joaquin County Historical Museum is held the first Saturday and Sunday in December. During the event, the Historical Museum at Micke Grove Park is transformed into a wonderland of holiday cheer. More than 60 exquisitely decorated trees, many with heirloom ornaments, are arranged throughout the museum. Adding to this festive setting will be Santa and Mrs. Claus, wandering carolers and entertainers, wood carvers, weavers and other artisans demonstrating their crafts and selling their wares.
