REASONS WHY I SHOULD JOIN THE GREER COUNTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE I have a stake in Greer County. I have a business stake in the county which can best be safeguarded by working with others through the Chamber of Commerce. I help insure area progress, which in turn insures me the success of my business. It is only fair for me to support the Chamber because I reap the benefits of the concerted planning, counsel and action the Chamber provides. My support yields many benefits. My support is “plowed back” to yield many benefits in new industries, increased payrolls, legislation, business protection and community advancement, which benefits my business. I have an obligation. I realize that everyone owes a debt to their community that cannot be paid in taxes; it is a debt of personal service. Since Greer County is my chosen place to live, work and play I should put something back. My Chamber of Commerce helps me fulfill this obligation. The Chamber needs me. MANGUM
In the extreme southwest corner of Oklahoma, “The Empire of Greer” has a history distinctively its own. Greer County, before statehood, contained 1,571,575 acres and was larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware. It consisted of the present counties of Greer, Jackson, Harmon and the southern half of Beckham. It was bounded on the south by the Red River, on the east and north by the North Fork of the Red River and on the west by the 100th Meridian. First Called “Tin City” by the cowboys, because of the tin cans that were unrolled and nailed over the strips of planking, Mangum was named for Captain A.S. Mangum, who participated in the Battle of San Jacinto in Texas. Captain Mangum was given a veteran’s certificate which gave him land in Greer County for his services. The western cattle trail was established across the eastern end of Greer County about 1876. Thundering herds of cattle were driven over the trail on the way to the Kansas shipping points. According to a record kept by Corwin Doan -- who operated a store at Doan’s Crossing on the south bank of the Red River – seven million cattle and four million horses were driven on the trail during the years it was used. Today, Mangum is a place that is always on the go, with the hustle and bustle of everyday life adding to the charm of this delightful, historic city. Many attractions and events await your visit. Mangum offers familiar favorite restaurants, with home cooking and family dining. A number of antique shops and other shopping awaits you. 6
Opportunity for growth and expression can be found at the Margaret Carder Library, the Old Greer County Museum, the community center, theater group and numerous churches of various denominations. Artists Alley is another cultural hub that helps to put Mangum firmly on the map; home to several awardwinning artists, Artists Alley is a major attraction, helping to bring visitors to the city. The City of Mangum also boasts a dynamic Main Street program that is responsible for the renovation of many buildings in the historic downtown region, as well as aiding with the economic regeneration of Mangum’s economy. Incorporated 1883 The City of Mangum is a thriving community located in Southwest Oklahoma. Home to a growing population of approximately 3,000 people, Mangum is the county seat of Greer County. The City of Mangum is among a handful of cities in Oklahoma that has its own power plant, substation and distribution system. In 1927, this light bulb installed at the Mangum fire station is still going strong – 90 years later. Greer County Court House was built in 1906, continuing to serve the county to the present time. Some of the most striking places in Mangum are Margaret Carder Library, Old Greer County Museum & Hall of Fame Inc., Hotel Franklin, First United Methodist Church, Greer County Court House, Mangum Power Plant, City Hall, the Mangum City Golf Course, Jewett Scott Park, Scott Fields airport and the Mangum High School. Mangum is a community that welcomes everyone with open arms and a friendly smile!

GRANITE Accounts of the early days in Granite, Oklahoma, recalled a raw western frontier town. In 1900, the barren prairies east of Granite, known as the Kiowa, Comanche and Apache reservations, were dotted with prairie schooners loaded with pioneers, making their slow way westward along the trail marked by carcasses, dead camp fires and empty tin cans. The destination: Granite. This town of tents was a boom town, with every other place a saloon, with gambling tables in open view, with red-lipped women and red-nosed men jostling each other on the streets. A town where the flickering lights never went out. A town where the only music was the lonesome wail of the coyote and steady click of the poker chip. A town where hundreds of little cow ponies stood like statues where their riders had dismounted and thrown their reins over their heads. On Nov. 17, 1900, the town of Granite was incorporated. A description of Granite in news accounts of the time painted it as a western oasis: “Granite is truly the joy spot of Western Oklahoma, located at the foot of the magnificent and rugged Wichita Mountains. With the finest and purest water in the state, six splendid churches and the best schools in Greer County, the famous Sulphur Springs with their pure health giving waters, dense shade and magnificent mountains (truly the Oasis of Western Oklahoma). Granite offers more as
home city and a place to raise and educate children than any other place in Southwest Oklahoma.” INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GRANITE Granite is nestled in the foothills of Walsh and Headquarters Mountains, bringing an abundance of wildlife to the community. The town also has a rich history with granite stone architecture built in the early 1900s. GRANITE IS HOME TO • Oklahoma State Reformatory granite rock structure built in 1909 • 30-foot-tall Will Rogers granite mosaic • Headquarters Mountain Butterfly Garden and Hiking Trail • A 12-foot-tall metal guitar sculpture MAJOR EVENTS Independence Day Celebration, July 4 – picnic in Gene Hahn City Park, Lion’s Club Coke floats, fireworks after dark. Christmas Celebration, first Saturday in December – Lion’s Club hot dogs, arts and crafts, bingo, entertainment, $1,000 Greer Bucks giveaway.

WILLOW Located in northern Greer County, Willow is a small community with a population of around 150. A small town with a huge heart, the Town of Willow hosts a monthly get-together for its senior citizens. Willow is also very proud of its July 4 Independence Day Celebration with a parade, large pot luck dinner, and a fireworks display at dark. Nearby is the Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area, a 25,000-acre preserve that features fishing, hiking, horseback riding and hunting. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT WILLOW Willow got its first post office in 1899. The original town site was located onehalf mile west of the present town. The
first name suggested for town was “Patt,” but was rejected by postal officials who gave them a list of names. Willow was chosen by a selection committee. In 1910, the town of Willow moved onehalf mile to the east (present location) with the opening of the Wichita Falls & Northwestern Railroad.

REED Located is far western Greer County, Reed is a small unincorporated community located along State Highway 9. The Reed Post Office opened in 1892. Reed was said to have been named for the first postmaster, John Reed Graham. Although a small community, Reed is known for its legendary Fourth of July Celebration with live music, a huge potluck meal and fireworks after dark. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT REED Two famous residents of Reed – the Ponder brothers, Major League Baseball player Charles Elmer Ponder and World War I Flying Ace William Thomas Ponder – were born
in Reed and were of Cherokee descent. Reed also was home to Curtis Bell, Western Oklahoma Hall of Fame member and renowned history and poetry writer.
