Letter from the Mayor If you are a new resident or business locating in Mauldin, I would like to personally welcome you to this great city nestled in the Upstate of South Carolina. You will be joining one of the fastest growing communities in the Southeast as our population almost doubled in size to over 25,000 residents in the past decade. Of the 270 municipalities in the state, Mauldin is now the 17th largest city. If you are a new resident or contemplating moving into our city, you are making a great choice to relocate here and become a citizen of our great community. We are, according to movoto.com, one of the “Top 5 Best Places to Live in South Carolina”. All of our city employees are ready to serve you as they perform their daily tasks. In a national ranking of best places for retirement, Mauldin was named the 29th best city to retire in, with the City of Charleston ranked 20th. Mauldin was the only city in South Carolina to make Money magazine’s Top 100 Places to Live. Our police department is proud of their CALEA certification and our fire department is one of only 37 of over 600 departments in the state with an ISO rating of 2. According to FBI crime statistics, Mauldin ranked the fifth safest city in the state. Our public works department provides Mauldin residents with clean neighborhoods through efficient garbage and recycling collection services along with leaf/limb and debris pickup services. Through structured preventive maintenance programs, our street and sewer departments ensure that our infrastructure is performing as it should be. We are pleased to see positive growth trends with our businesses and residential communities as revenues and permit activity continues to increase. Our most recent financial audit indicated that we are very sound financially and we were upgraded to AA+ by Moody’s and A1 by S&P. According to Zippa.com of 62 cities ranked in the state, Mauldin ranked the fourth most successful city. Mauldin’s recreation programs and facilities are first rate and state of the art. We offer some of the best recreation opportunities of any city in the state with 78 acres of parks in addition to the Mauldin Sports Center that includes a gymnasium, a climbing wall and a full line of fitness equipment and classes. Our senior citizens’ program continues to grow each and every year, and our seniors stay extremely active. Mauldin’s Cultural Center, adjacent to the Sports Center and a stone’s throw from City Hall, continues to serve as a resource for the community
by housing the Greater Mauldin Chamber of Commerce and various civic groups. Our newest addition to this venue is our outdoor amphitheater, hosting several performances including “Beaching Fridays” this year for eight weekends and featuring a farmers market during the summer months. Event attendance and building usage continues to set new records for this venue. “Expect Greater Things” as we continue to invest in this facility both internally and externally. If you are a business opening or relocating in our city, we also welcome you and take great pride in being the most “Business Friendly” city in the Upstate. Our goal is to make your transition to our city as seamless as possible. We were ranked by nerdwallett.com in the “Top 10 Cities in South Carolina to Start a Business.” You will also enjoy the benefits of the city’s great working relationship with what we consider the most active and professional Chamber of Commerce in the Upstate. Family values are at the core of our community here in Mauldin. We hope that you will agree that we offer a high quality of life where you can “Expect Greater Things!” On behalf of the city council and our employees, we welcome you to the City of Mauldin. Economic Development
Opportunities are rising in Mauldin for businesses and organizations, and Mauldin’s Economic Development team ensures that those opportunities continue to grow with the city. Mauldin has attracted many new projects in recent months, and with new projects come new jobs. BB&T’s newly constructed 140,000-squarefoot mortgage servicing center houses more than 600 BB&T associates. Combined with the announcement of a Courtyard by Marriott hotel to be constructed in Millport Circle, the two bring more than 800 jobs to Mauldin. Furthermore, Verizon Wireless’ expansion of existing operations in Mauldin will create 260 new jobs; MP Husky’s new 150,000-squarefoot facility on Old Stage Road, currently under construction, is projected to create 50 new jobs; and Caristrap International recently announced its decision to locate its first U.S. facility in Mauldin, a project that will create 100 new jobs. Other businesses new to Mauldin project to bring jobs to the market over the next two to five years, including Morley, Anyone Home and Turbine Technologies, Inc. Mauldin has seen several new and existing businesses undergo construction or renovation, including Jon Kane Fashions, who (with his daughters) designs and manufactures women’s accessories; the relocation of Little Pigs, a Mauldin mainstay for over 30 years; the recent opening of ACE Hardware; the renovation of Wendy’s; and construction on the soonto-open Tropical Grille. Additionally, the Social Security Administration is relocating from Greenville to Mauldin’s North Main Street, while
12
construction is underway on North Main for the Office of Disability and Adjudication Review. Mauldin’s development includes the city’s vision for urban village growth and design. In coordination with Greenville County, the city of Mauldin obtained approval for two multi-county parks. Additionally, Mauldin has approved various amendments to its zoning ordinance that will bring its zoning laws into the 21st century and cultivate more mixed-use, pedestrianfriendly development throughout the city. As the city continues to grow, Mauldin remains a safe, inviting community. In 2017, Money Magazine recognized Mauldin as one of the best places to live in the United States. Known for its excellent schools, great businesses, low crime rates, low property taxes and a great workforce, Mauldin was the top ranked South Carolina community on the magazine’s list. SmartAsset ranked the city as having the healthiest housing market in South Carolina, while the Palmetto Promise Institute listed Mauldin among the top five enterprise-friendly South Carolina cities. The Mauldin community demands growth and excellence, and each City department strives to meet those demands. In addition, Mauldin City Council continues to support efforts in business and economic development, public safety, recreation, arts and culture and beautification. Working together, the people of Mauldin strive toward a bright and flourishing future.

Mauldin Cultural Center
Kera Kitchings
As Mauldin continues to grow, so does the Mauldin Cultural Center’s programming. Between arts classes, music and food festivals, the Mauldin Market, live performances by nationally recognized comedians, and more, Mauldin residents don’t have to go far to have a great time. A variety of classes are offered throughout the year at the Cultural Center. The Art Haven offers classes in pottery, watercolor, sketching, ink and pencil drawing and other multimedia arts to youth and adults alike. In addition to visual arts, the Cultural Center continues to host lessons in vocal arts, guitar, woodworking, youth theater and more. In 2011, the Mauldin Cultural Center built an outdoor amphitheater. In 2012, The Railroad Concert Series officially launched as part of the summer amphitheater programming with a performance by Mac Arnold & Plate Full O’ Blues. Since then, more than 5,000 music lovers have attended the Railroad Concerts, traveling from as far as the Northeast to as close as our neighbors behind the Cultural Center. In 2019, the series will transform into a weekend festival featuring live performances by musicians offering up a heady mix of bluegrass, country, rhythm and blues and more. For those who prefer tunes that fit well to a hot summer day on the sand, Beachin’ Fridays offers live performances by local beach bands. Since 2015, Beachin’ Fridays people have come from all over the Upstate to converge on the outdoor amphitheater for evenings of shag dancing, food trucks and craft beverages. The final night always features a special performance and fireworks. As with the Railroad Concerts, all shows are free of charge, so grab your dancing shoes and bring your energy. From June through August, residents and guests enjoy shopping at the Mauldin Market located at the Cultural Center’s outdoor amphitheater. The market features a variety of vendors from around the Upstate selling locally sourced and produced items including dairy, eggs, produce, honey, gifts, clothing, accessories, treats and pastries, as well as live music, food trucks, craft beverages and family fun. Each year, the Cultural Center invites nationally recognized comedians to hit the stage. In fall 2017, Henry Cho had the audience roaring with laughter with his clean comedy. In
20
spring 2018, hilarity will ensue as James Gregory returns to the Cultural Center for an evening of down-home storytelling at its best. While Mauldin pulls talent from across the country, the city also showcases local talent. Mauldin is home to the Mauldin Public Art Trail, an annual program in which a new art work is selected each year by the Mauldin Cultural Council, a nonprofit arts organization that supports artistic efforts around the community and at the Mauldin Cultural Center, to fill one of nine predetermined slots around the outdoor amphitheater. December 2016 saw the addition of “Palmetto with Flowers” by Jamie von Herndon, a blue palmetto sculpture laden with metal flowers. The sculpture embraces the resilience, strength, and unity of South Carolinians during the tragedy at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston and the 2015 statewide flooding. “We Are All One” by Yelitza Díaz Muzzarelli was installed in December 2017. The piece features beings climbing a concrete wall, exalting the spirit of struggle, equality and reciprocity among humans regardless of their differences. To support budding talent, the Cultural Center partnered with director Tim St. Clair II to start the Mauldin Youth Theatre, giving youth from the community the opportunity to perform on stage. In November 2017, after countless rehearsals and plenty of hard work, the troupe proudly presented their inaugural play, “The Lion King Jr.” The Mauldin Youth Theatre holds open auditions for anyone in the community who is interested in acting. No prior experience is necessary to audition and there are no fees to audition or participate in productions. Mauldin Youth Theatre’s second production will be James and the Giant Peach, coming spring 2018. The Cultural Center supports its established talent with Broadway Under the Stars, which features local theater professionals performing Broadway favorites live under a blanket of stars in the outdoor amphitheater. The outdoor amphitheater is also home to SOOIE, Mauldin’s Annual BBQ cook-off. For its seventh consecutive year, the Cultural Center has partnered with the SC Barbecue Association and the Mauldin recreation, public works, police and fire
departments to host the annual competition. More than 25 cookers come from all over South Carolina to show off their barbecue skills each fall. Friday evening kicks off the event with live music and an “Anything Butt” competition, where cookers can serve anything but pulled pork. The event continues Saturday afternoon with more live music, a kid’s zone and a sanctioned pulled-pork competition. Visitors can purchase a tasting pass for the event, allowing them to taste samples from each cooker and vote on their favorite; they can also purchase pints of barbecue to enjoy later. Every fall, the Cultural Center partners with the Greater Mauldin Chamber of Commerce for the everpopular train show, Trains, Trains and More Trains. Thousands of guests from across the region visit the Cultural Center for the twoweekend event where they can interact with model trains. Continuing their partnership, the Chamber and Cultural Center ring in the holiday season with nearly two weeks of festivities during Mauldin’s 12 Days of Christmas. Running Dec. 1-12, this annual program is jam-packed with events including breakfast with Santa, holiday arts classes, Christmas tree lighting, a parade, a holiday movie and musical performances. The future continues to shine bright for the Mauldin Cultural Center, with new and exciting changes on the horizon. One of those changes is the renovation of the Cultural Center’s auditorium, beginning in 2018. The renovations will be funded through a $125,000 grant from the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, which will be matched by Mauldin City Council. Changes will include a green room for performers, new lighting and sound systems, stadium-style seating, new flooring and a new ceiling. These new renovations come shortly after construction on the Cultural Center’s side parking lot, resulting in 64 new spaces, a new handicappedaccessible entrance to the building and better lot flow. To learn more about classes, performances, festivals, and more held at the Mauldin Cultural Center, visit mauldinculturalcenter.org or call (864) 335-4862.

Education
BETHEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Bethel Elementary School was established between 1801 and 1810; the original school was housed in a one-room log building. In 1916, a two-room school replaced the original building, and the deed was transferred to the board of trustees. The school was built on its present site in 1964 to educate 477 students. Today, the school sits in the heart of the fastest growing region of South Carolina. Cornfields have given way to housing developments, country roads to highways. The tiny sand-colored school was enlarged to three times its original size in a $6 million expansion in 1995. In 2015, the school celebrated its 50th anniversary. Currently, Bethel School is one of nearly 100 schools in the county; it is located in a growing suburb in the Upstate. Since 1997, multiage classes have been an innovative option to consider in lieu of a traditional classroom setting. Challenge, the gifted and talented program, is designed to meet the needs of academically gifted and talented students. The Extended Day program offers a service to the school community and provides enriching, structured care for children. It is offered to students in all grade levels from 2:30 to 6 p.m. on school days. Students are provided homework assistance, recreational activities, snack, arts and crafts and access to educational technology. Students utilize Compass Learning in reading and math while attending the program in order to impact academic achievement. Nerissa Lewis was named principal at Bethel Elementary in July 2014. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Winthrop University and a master’s degree in administration and supervision from Furman University. She is a member of the South Carolina Association of School Administrators. Her previous experience includes principal of Mitchell Road Elementary and Baker’s Chapel Elementary, assistant principal, administrative assistant and teacher.

MAULDIN MIDDLE SCHOOL Mauldin Middle School’s goal is to create a collaborative learning community and to prepare all students to become life-long learners who are responsible and productive citizens. A strong partnership with the community helps to make this school so exceptional. The school opened in 1999 and has almost 1,000 students. The faculty and staff consist of 52 certified teachers, four administrators and 30 staff members. Principal Christopher Kilian is in his third year as principal of the school. In addition to helping students develop world-class skills and life and career characteristics by their course offerings, the school also integrates technology into their curriculum to improve student learning. All students at Mauldin Middle School are issued Chromebooks to enhance the degree of learning. The academic program at Mauldin Middle School is extremely competitive and students have the opportunity to take multiple courses for high school credit. Students may embark in a more rigorous course load by advancing to Algebra I, Geometry, English 1, Spanish, Google Basics and Multi-Media Basics for high school credit. Students also have the option of taking many courses through the virtual program, allowing them to take more AP courses once they enter high school. Students have two periods of related arts each school day, giving them the opportunity to to explore areas in which they are passionate. Students also have “flex time” during the school day, which is a period of additional instructional time set aside specifically for teachers to meet students where they are academically. Students receive either assistance in a content area in which they are struggling, enrichment in a content area in which they are excelling or individualized guidance in completing their assigned academic tasks from teachers. Mauldin Middle School students have the opportunity to participate in many extracurricular activities, including basketball, softball, baseball, soccer, volleyball, National Junior Beta Club, Lego Robotics, Sandlapper Club, Girl’s Science Club, Youth in Government, Battle of the Brains, Student Council, Be A Fan Club, STEP Team, Yearbook, school music and drama performances, band, strings, choral competitions and concerts.
MAULDIN HIGH SCHOOL What is a maverick? A maverick is someone who “exhibits great independence in thought and action.” According to new Mauldin High School principal Mike Peake, “What makes the school so special is our students. We are blessed to have our students.” Mauldin High School mavericks in the class of 2017 graduated ready to change the world. With over $14.8 million in college scholarships, these students have gone on to study at colleges and universities around the state and country, and it was the outstanding, rigorous, and student-centered education offered to them that enabled their success. With a graduation rate above 94 percent (and 90 percent of those students attending two- or four-year colleges), Excellent Absolute Rating on the South Carolina School Report Card for six consecutive years, Palmetto Gold Awards for General Excellence and Closing the Gap, six national merit semifinalists, 72 AP Scholars, 29 AP Scholars with Honors, 53 AP Scholars with Distinction, seven AP National Scholars, 37 Palmetto Fellows, nine Teaching Fellows Scholarships over two years and National Beta Club School of Merit recognitions, Mauldin High School graduates well-educated and civicminded young people equipped to meet the needs of an ever-changing world. Academically, students at Mauldin High School have varied and diverse opportunities to prepare for life outside of the classroom. Each classroom has a smart board, and the school became a Greenville County pilot school for integrating personalized and student-centered learning by providing each student with a Chromebook. Teachers participated in relevant professional development to prepare for teaching familiar content in new and technologically enhanced ways, preparing students for the technological demands of living, learning and working in the 21st century. The ready access to technology, supported by grants from the PTSA, has allowed the school to increase participation in areas like STEM and health sciences. Additionally, students earn college credits while still enrolled in high school through AP courses as well as dual credit classes, and many students explore other opportunities with partner schools such as Donaldson Center, the Fine Arts Center, Golden Strip Career Center, and Greenville Tech Jump Start. With marked success and achievement already, what does the future hold for Mauldin High School? Principal Peake is working to create stronger connections with the Mauldin community. By restructuring orientation and open house to be more family centered, the school is becoming more accessible and open. He also is strengthening connections with colleges and universities as well as programs of occupational training to increase participation in Greenville County’s G+ model, an initiative that enables Mauldin High School students to graduate with more than just a high school diploma. www.mauldinchamber.org
