WELCOME
Greater Mauston Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to learn more
M
Mauston combines the friendly small-town charm of scenic Wisconsin with the progressive, on-the-move attitude of a much larger city and a strategic location ideally suited for commerce and tourism. Established as a sawmill settlement and incorporated in 1887, the City of Mauston (population 4,447) is situated exactly halfway between Minneapolis and Chicago on Interstate 90/94 and just a short drive north of the state capital, Madison. The hub of Juneau County, Greater Mauston is naturally connected to the outdoors with woods, lakes and rivers. The Lemonweir River flows through our revitalized downtown and a newly created river walk that has quickly become the community’s focal point for commerce and leisure. The Wisconsin River, Petenwell Lake and Castle Rock Lake – Wisconsin’s second and fourth largest lakes – are just minutes away (see Tourism section for details). While preserving our heritage with places such as the
Boorman House Historical Museum and historic buildings such as the Juneau County Courthouse and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the city has adopted a modern approach to economic development, new housing/residential areas, transportation and community facilities such as our great schools, senior housing and many parks. We are committed to controlled, sustainable growth that reflects a respect for the importance of open space and natural beauty. The result is a lifestyle that puts the great in Greater Mauston. TOURISM Tourists find themselves naturally connected in greater Mauston
G
Greater Mauston offers an abundance of year-round recreational and leisure opportunities that are available to residents and visitors alike. Water-based activities include great fishing, boating, swimming, canoeing, paddle boarding and tubing on our lakes and rivers. Other superior recreational opportunities include horseback riding, camping, snowmobiling, hiking and biking. Recently, the Mauston Room Tax Committee launched its new tourism brand and campaign to tell more potential visitors about the area. Mauston is naturally connected to the natural beauty of south central Wisconsin that was extolled by two of America’s iconic conservationists – Aldo Leopold and John Muir. Greater Mauston also encompasses Elroy, Lyndon Station, New Lisbon, Wonewoc, Camp Douglas and Hustler and Necedah, all within a 45-minute circle. Here are just some of the reasons why visitors should discover what local residents already appreciate about Greater Mauston: The Necedah National Wildlife Refuge with its breathtaking photo ops is a 44,000-acre preserve for wildlife that includes eagles, pheasants, gray wolves, coyotes, foxes, cranes and more. The refuge is open year-round and is just a 20-minute scenic drive north of Mauston.

Juneau County Castle Rock Park, situated on the 16,000-acre Castle Rock Lake, has 16 acres, a sandy swimming beach, great fishing, boating and 300 campsites. Buckhorn State Park is also located on Castle Rock Lake. The Cruisin’ Turtle party boat, based at the Dirty Turtle pub in New Lisbon, offers scenic tours for groups and private parties. Castle Rock Golf Course is a scenic 18-hole public course located at the gateway of Castle Rock Lake and Petenwell Lake, just north of Mauston. Mauston’s Historic Boorman House offers a step back in time to the founding of Maugh’s Town as a sawmill settlement in the late 1800s. Special thematic open houses are held during the Christmas holidays, and a quilt exhibit and sale is held there in September. The entrance to the Elroy-Sparta biking trail is 20 minutes from Mauston on the back roads. Plans are in the works to directly connect our biking trails to this nationally known rails-to-trails system. Wisconsin Dells and its renowned waterparks are just 20 minutes south of Mauston on I-90/94.

Woodside
SPORTS COMPLEX
W
Woodside Sports is Mauston’s premier sports complex that offers camps, clinics, tournaments and other events for all ages. This western themed sports complex features eight all-turf baseball fields. The second facility will include soccer and baseball fields, as well as the Wisconsin Dells Center located just down the road in Wisconsin Dells. The Woodside Wisconsin Dells Center is an indoor dome large enough to hold one football field that also hosts tradeshows and conventions. Sports offered are baseball, softball, soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey, volleyball and wrestling.
THE PRESENT & FUTURE In 2002, Damon purchased the land from Lucille Feldman Nichols, one of the original five Feldman children. It has been over 10 years of persistence, commitment and patience that Damon’s vision has begun to formalize into a reality. On Nov. 13, 2010, one half mile from Woodside Ranch, ground breaking ceremonies were held at the construction site where over 100 community officials, residents, media and celebrities attended, including thenChicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, hall-of-famer Paul Molitor and future hall-of-famer Frank Thomas. Since 2010, Woodside Sports Complex has grown to include the 245-acre facility in Mauston, as well as soccer and baseball fields in Wisconsin Dells. Future plans also include championship stadiums for baseball and soccer as well as tennis courts. Opened in June 2014 with eight fully synthetic turf baseball/softball fields in Mauston, Woodside eventually hosts over 80 events per year when complete, and is committed to becoming the premier complex that provides programming for youth and athletic development, and attractions for the entire family.
HISTORY: HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Today’s famous Ranch Guest House started out as a simple two-story farmhouse built in the 1850s. Driven by aspirations of becoming a farmer, Davenport, Illinois, railroad worker William Feldman, his wife Sophie and their five children purchased the farm in 1914. Known as Woodside Farm for the next 15 years, the Ranch became a getaway from the city, and the Feldmans saw their dream expand as more of the friends and family vacationed there. For the next 60 years, Woodside Ranch was owned and operated by the Feldman family. In 1998, Damon Zumwalt, owner of Woodside Ranch and owner/developer of Woodside Sports Complex, visited Woodside Ranch as a guest over the winter, and while on horseback he ventured through the woods and into the meadows. Damon’s first thought was, “How many soccer fields could I build here?” A visionary and entrepreneur, Damon envisioned hundreds of youths playing sports, and believed Woodside Ranch had the potential to become the most unique sports complex in the country. As a father of five children, all of whom were involved in sports growing up, Damon had an idea of what worked and what didn’t work. Damon’s vision was to create a state-of-the-art complex where youths would compete and learn valuable lessons taught through sports, lessons and principles he also learned through his career as a high school and collegiate athlete.
WOODSIDE RANCH RESORT AMENITIES The Woodside Ranch Resort & Conference Center of today is an all-inclusive guest ranch that is open year-round. The all-inclusive rate includes your meals, lodging, activities and of course, horseback riding and pony and wagon rides. Lodging options consist of cozy cabins with working fireplaces, ranch house rooms (rustic hotel rooms) and a recently renovated lake house. Meals are home cooked and served family style in the ranch house. In the morning, the legendary breakfast ride takes guests out in the woods to breakfast. For those looking to stop in for a day of fun, Woodside also offers horseback rides and pony and wagon rides to the public as well. There is something for everyone. Discover a Wisconsin legend 100 years in the making.

LOCATION
M
Mauston finds you surrounded by natural wonder, wildlife and has a rich variety of outdoor activities. The city of Mauston is located next door to Wisconsin’s second and fourth largest lakes, Petenwell and Castle Rock Lakes. Other natural features that surround our area include the Dells, multiple rivers, Indian effigy mounds and the Necedah Wildlife Refuge. Mauston also has a rich rural history with access to diverse agricultural experiences from cranberry bogs to dairy farms to apple orchards. The city’s beginning was based on the lumber industry of early Wisconsin. Mauston’s unique name originally was Maughs Town, named after its founder Milton M. Maugh. Incorporated in 1887 with a population of 1,857, the city
today has a population of approximately 4,500 maintaining its rural character. However, the city does benefit from its central location, for instance, it is the Juneau County seat. Mauston is often referred to as the halfway point between Chicago and the Twin Cities. Mauston’s position along Interstate 90-94 provides easy access to several economic centers: Madison, WI ................................................ 1 hour La Crosse, WI ............................................... 1 hour Milwaukee, WI .......................................... 2 hours Minneapolis, MN ....................................... 3 hours Chicago, IL ................................................ 3 hours

UNION AIRPORT
A
A community that is readily accessible by air transportation holds a competitive advantage and realizes economic and quality of life benefits that can affect every citizen. The Mauston-New Lisbon Union Airport is fast becoming the principle access route from a community to the nation and world. As an important part of our statewide transportation network, local airports such as Mauston-New Lisbon Union Airport play a critical role in fostering business growth and economic development. Convenient access to air transportation allows businesses to quickly move goods and key personnel from one site to another, saving valuable
time and increasing productivity. The Mauston-New Lisbon Union Airport also provides facilities for emergency medical flights, law enforcement, agricultural spraying, pilot training and many other important community services. These services include management and operation of the airport, as well as the businesses providing aircraft maintenance, fueling, storage rental, charter sales and leasing activities. The airport has a 3,686 x 75-foot paved runway, rotating beacon and PAPI. It accommodates all small single-engine piston aircraft and some twin-engine piston aircraft under 12,500 pounds. Plans are in place to expand the runway in the near future. We invite visitors who land at our airport to enjoy local accommodations, restaurants, retail shopping and recreation, and to explore our area for commercial/industrial opportunities. The airport is located four miles north of Mauston between Mauston and New Lisbon.

History of the
BOORMAN HOUSE
M
Mauston was founded by Milton M. Maughs, and the town was originally named Maughs Town after its founder; it was based on the lumber industry of early Wisconsin. Learn more about Mauston’s storied past at the Boorman House, built by Benjamin C. Boorman at 211 N. Union St. Boorman was born Sept. 3, 1830, in Kent County, England, emigrated to New York in 1840 and was apprenticed at an early age by the owners of Wadsworth Flouring Mills. He came to his father’s farm near Delevan in 1845 where he worked for several years. Construction began in 1874 on a new 13-room home for the Boorman family, and was completed in 1876. The exterior was covered with a cream colored brick, made by S.E. Ellsworth at his yard about a half-mile south of the Allaby corner, junction of County Trunk G and State Highway 82. The interior lumber was of the finest woods being finished in the Boorman Mill. The building was erected on lots 13 and 20, Boorman’s Addition, and stood in a beautiful grove of trees. There was a carriage shed, an extensive lawn and a formal garden. Several brick sidewalks extended to the street. There was a large, columned porch on the front or east side of the house and cupola or “Widow’s Walk” adorned the roof. The rooms were large and airy with a curved mahogany staircase to the second floor. Three marble fireplaces graced three rooms and apertures throughout the house held many lamps. The house was furnished with the finest silver, carpeting and furniture including a Grand Piano. The cost of the building was $12,000.
Boorman died Aug. 17, 1886 of consumption and after the closing of his estate, Jeff T. Heath came into possession of the mills, dam and the Boorman House. On the death of Heath in 1903, the house was purchased by Tom Powers, a wellknown Mauston citizen. He lived there with his family, selling to John Tremain about 1930 who sold to Francis Gardner and his wife. They sold the house to Edward Pierce about 1962. The Juneau County Historical Society was formed at the Boorman House in 1963 and used the house for a museum for a number of years before moving to the Boorman House about 1978. The historical society purchased the house for a Museum from Edward W. Pierce on Aug. 6, 1987.

RURAL LIVING
M
Mauston is a rural community centrally located in southwestern Wisconsin on Interstate 90/94. Mauston’s location gives it the advantage of maintaining a “small town” lifestyle with a short commute to “big city” activities. The community is within a three hour drive to both Chicago and Minneapolis. Close enough for a client visit, yet far enough away to get quality rural talent and lower real estate costs.

Several unique recreational and cultural experiences surround Mauston. Wisconsin Dells is only 20 minutes east of town. The second and fourth largest Wisconsin lakes with resorts and outdoor recreation
are minutes north of Mauston. Miles of state bike trails pass through the county, and the nationally acclaimed Necedah Wildlife Refuge lies a few miles north.

SCHOOL DISTRICT
T
The Mission of Mauston Schools: in partnership with families and community, is to be the school district of choice that is committed to educating students to set goals, think critically, act responsibly, and work cooperatively to become successful citizens. The School District of Mauston encompasses 324 square miles in the heart of the Lemonweir Valley, offering an excellent comprehensive public education for students ages four through high school. The Mauston Board of Education believes that a strong public education is the most certain means of developing an informed community. Public schools are the bedrock of healthy, engaged communities. Mauston Schools makes a bold promise to build a quality foundation of learning in the community so that our young people can be instrumental in creating a promising future. Mauston Schools know that the children, youth, and citizens of the community deserve no less than our best efforts at supporting our students’ highest levels of academic and personal achievement. Mauston Schools have high quality teachers, support staff, and school principals who have high expectations for all students. Mauston has five schools that are dedicated to studentcentered excellence. Every level of the organization is a part of championing a quality educational experience that maximizes each student’s potential for success. Every individual in the organization has a united purpose to help students reach their highest levels of attainment. Teachers, support staff, parents, students, and the community play a significant and important role in a collective partnership to serve our students. This collective support is evidenced in school hallways, athletic fields, classrooms, and at community events. All adults are positive ambassadors for the students and the schools in the School District of Mauston. A RICH AND FOCUSED LEARNING EXPERIENCE Students in the Mauston Schools experience a high quality and coherent instructional program in Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Each school has a school improvement plan that defines its goals and priorities as a school. Teachers, administrators, and support staff are evaluated on an annual basis to ensure that each staff member is growing professionally and that their work is aligned with District and school defined priorities. In addition to strong teaching and learning for student success in college, career, and life, students at all schools also participate in instrumental and vocal music, adaptive and general physical education, visual arts, integrated technology, and library and media instruction. At the secondary schools students have the opportunity to study these

specific interests in more depth through clubs, co-curricular, and other academic and non-academic activities. LIBRARY
T
The Hatch Public Library was made possible by generous contributions of both time and money from many citizens in our community. Notably, Bill and Jean Hatch stepped forward to make a $1 million pledge toward the building of our new library in memory of their grandaughter, Deena Hatch, motivating the community to make the dream a reality.
The Hatch Public Library provides free materials and services to help area residents meet their personal, educational, professional and recreational needs. In addition, we offer magazines, audio books, music CD’s and DVD’s. The Library also has a state-of-the-art computer lab with 16 internet computers and free Wi-Fi access. The Hatch Public Library subscribes to more than 100 magazines, receives 4 daily newspapers and offers preschool story times.

These programs wrap around life stages and respond to the concerns of citizens. ADVANCED LEADERSHIP PROGRAM The Advanced Leadership Program strives to identify, cultivate and support leadership development in Juneau County. The ALP program collaborates with other organizations and
Community relationships are vital to Western. Each program has an advisory committee made up of people from local business who are either in that career or are considering hiring for that career, helping to ensure Western graduates have the skills they will need in the workforce. In addition, students get real-world experience by participating in related community service projects as part of their course work.
businesses to deliver leadership training for area citizens. The program offers 10 sessions over a 10-month period, with each session geared toward a certain topic and/or community issue. Business &
INDUSTRY
M
Mauston’s stable job market has seen a positive expansion in its retail and tourism market. We provide about 3,000 jobs to our community and the region. Juneau County is in the top third of the strongest wage paying counties in the state. The following list outlines the top 10 private employers within the city and its immediate borders. EMPLOYER

Manufacturing ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT – Programs & Financing TIF: Tax Incremental Finance The City of Mauston has two Tax Incremental Finance (TIF) districts. Both are financially healthy and stable, positioning the city with the ability to comfortably incentivize new development. The first TIF is the city’s industrial park located on the west side of town. The park has access to rail and is located on State Hwy 12/16.The city recently expanded the industrial park and created over 30 acres of developable land with provisions for streets, water, sewer, electrical, telecommunications, storm water detention and drainage. Property in the recent expansion is city owned. The second TIF is the city’s business park located on the east side of town. The park has easy access to Interstate 90/94, offers the basic public amenities (street, water, sewer and electricity) and provides a variety of parcel sizes for future development. The city, county and private entities own lots open for development.
Downtown Redevelopment The city has cleaned and prepared downtown sites for redevelopment. It is shovel-ready, over an acre in size and in a good location next to the County Justice Center, one block from State Street. Revolving Loan Fund The city maintains a revolving loan fund to provide gap financing for small businesses and start-ups. The primary purpose of the program is to provide additional jobs. The loan amount is subject to the availability of funds. There is no set minimum or maximum, but generally loans will not exceed the 20 percent of available funds. Private funds must be leveraged at least one dollar for every dollar of RLF funds. In addition, at least one permanent full-time equivalent position must be created or retained for every $20,000 of RLF funds requested. Economic Development Corporation The city is serviced by two development corporations, the Greater Mauston Area Development Corporation and the Juneau County Economic Development Corporation. GMADC is the primary contact for development opportunities within the city. CITY DEVELOPMENT PLANS Most importantly, the city has the infrastructure to support additional growth. The school system infrastructure is also positioned for growth. The City recently invested in the redevelopment of its downtown by rehabbing its downtown Riverside Park and developing a mile of Riverwalk. Those investments have in turn attracted private development to invest and revitalize the Downtown and entry corridor. The City has every intention to continue its focus and efforts to expand park and trail amenities throughout the community.

WORSHIP
L
Long ago, the first settlers in the area realized the importance of faith in establishing a strong sense of community, and built the town’s first churches to reflect their convictions. Over the years, religion has had a strong presence in the lives of our citizens. Today, Mauston’s faith community is as strong and vibrant as ever. The faithful gather in any one of more than a
dozen nearby worship facilities that hold services throughout the week and represent a broad spectrum of beliefs. Through the Mauston Area Ministerial Association, religious leaders work hand in hand with civic groups and are active in the daily lives of residents. They provide valuable care, offer direction and lend comfort and relief to those in need. Photo by Diane Dahl

Habitat for
HUMANITY
A
Across the U.S., Habitat for Humanity has built or renovated over 400,000 homes for low income working families, impacting over 850,000 children who live in those homes. Now Habitat for Humanity is at work in Juneau County. Habitat started working in Juneau County in 2009. Locally Habitat has built or renovated 10 homes for low income working families in Juneau County and continues to build one home per year. Who Habitat helps: Habitat helps families who have a steady income and agree to put in 500 hours of sweat equity in helping to build or renovate their home. Habitat for Humanity also has a strong partnership with the Mauston High School. In conjunction with its Advanced Construction class led by Mike Borreson, interested students get the opportunity to gain real-world carpentry experience in field and many of the students go on to carpentry or construction careers. JUNEAU COUNTY GAINS FOREVER When construction is completed, the selected family purchases the home from Habitat with a no-interest mort-
gage. The monthly mortgage payments provide capital back to Habitat for building more homes to help additional families. As a result, any donations or volunteer effort contribute to decent and affordable housing for working families in Juneau County for many years to come. HOW YOU CAN HELP Habitat is a volunteer organization, and many of the resources needed for building homes are donated. Anyone willing to give of their time, to donate building materials, to provide professional services or to make financial contributions is welcome. Another way to support Habitat in Juneau County is to donate items to the Mauston Habitat ReStore, located just south of Mauston on Hwy 12-16. All proceeds from ReStore sales go to Habitat’s housing programs. WE HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU Anyone wishing to volunteer or work with Habitat can give them a call at the Habitat ReStore, just south of Mauston, at (608) 847-2000, or visit www.maustonrestore.com or www.habitat-ajc.org.
