Mequon-Th iensville HISTORY T

he City of Mequon and the Village of Thiensville share a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century when adventurers began to trap and trade with the Potawatami and Menomonie tribes living along the Milwaukee River. By the mid 1830’s, many of the early explorers began to build and settle in this area which was designated as the Town of Mequon in 1836. Not long thereafter, Thiensville saw its beginning when John Henry Thien, a German immigrant, travelled along the Milwaukee River looking for a new home. He and his wife settled near the Native American village known as Mequon Sippi in 1842 and began building a dam to provide water power for a grist mill and saw mill. As more and more immigrants found their way to the area, the community began to thrive. These adventurous immigrants mostly English, German, Irish and Yankees who migrated from the east, learned and worked with Native Americans as they built their new community.

Mequon became an official township in 1846, and town meetings were held at Thien’s home. Though Thiensville was, and still is, entirely surrounded by the town of Mequon, it remained unincorporated until 1910 when it officially became the Village of Thiensville with a population of 289. Both Mequon and Thiensville flourished throughout the early 20th century, and in 1957, the Town of Mequon became the City of Mequon. The area has grown greatly since its beginning, but it still remembers and honors the culture and history that made it what it is today.

■ Thiensville Historic Preservation Commission, which oversees the Main Street and Green Bay Road historic districts, offers a walking tour booklet that describes the history and architecture of the heart of the village.

■ Mequon Landmarks Commission, which designated 27 historical sites in the City of Mequon since 1981, starting with the Jonathan Clark House. ■ Trinity Freistadt Historical Society, located on Mequon’s west side, offers a unique historic village and records of their community dating back to 1839. ■ Mequon Thiensville Historical Society, founded in 1987, offers a research center which contains a significant collection of local historical pictures and documents. The society also maintains the 1839 Isham Day House Museum on Cedarburg Road opposite the Mequon City Hall. ■ Jonathan Clark House Museum is the newest historic organization. Located on Cedarburg Road in Mequon, this beautiful 1848 Greek Revival structure is open by appointment for tours and hosts several community events each year.

Mequon-Thiensville Historical Society The Mequon-Thiensville Historical Society formed in 1987 with members of the former Mequon Men’s Club. Starting with the extensive personal document collection of Don and Bev Silldorff, the archives has grown significantly over the years and includes documents dating back to the middle 1800’s. The Mequon-Thiensville Historical Society is available for genealogical research, history of local individuals and buildings and a large inventory of local photographs and maps. Copies of recent newsletters are available at the MTHS website, www.mthistoricalsociety.org. 6

LIONFEST Thiensville Village Park

Winter Frolic, held every year at the expansive Mequon Nature Preserve, provides a wide range of outdoor activities such as sleigh rides, snow shoeing, ice fishing, chainsaw carvings and bonfires. Family Fun Before the Fourth, the popular community event held on the Saturday before the Fourth of July, begins with a parade in the morning and is followed by free ice cream and entertainment at the Village Park all day. The event ends in the evening with a concert and fireworks. Pommerntag, an outdoor ethnic festival, celebrates the German culture that is interwoven with Mequon-Thiensville’s history. It features ethnic food, cultural displays, genealogy research, music and dancing. Gathering on the Green is a premier outdoor performing arts festival that takes place at the scenic Rotary Park. The concerts feature exceptional entertainment ranging from local fine arts to popular national touring bands and artists. An outstanding fireworks display choreographed to a live orchestra is featured after the final performance. A bustling farmers’ market is also held every Tuesday from May to October in Thiensville. The market features an array of merchants and products, luncheon vendors, music, contests and more. Due to its popularity and close proximity to the river the market is known as the best “dam” market.

Recreation M equon and Thiensville offer numerous opportunities for outdoor recreation.

The community is filled with small and large scenic parks which provide outdoor fun for the whole family. Area parks feature playground equipment, hiking and biking trails, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, swimming pools, fishing, canoe and kayak launch sites, picnic areas and more. Thiensville Village Park, an especially popular venue, offers a riverside setting and an opportunity to observe a fish passage on the Rotary Riverwalk trail. The 16.3 acre park, serves as the site for the weekly Thiensville Village Market, the annual Family Fun Before the Fourth event and Lionfest. The expansive Rotary Park in Mequon, host of the large annual Gathering on the Green concert and event, is also a frequently visited location. It features a large fishing pond, pavilions, soccer fields, walking paths and more.

Virmond Park, a 63-acre park, provides breathtaking panoramic views from the bluffs that overlook Lake Michigan. Visitors can stroll through the many trails in the nature conservancy and enjoy the picnic and recreational areas. Residents and visitors may also relish a stunning view

of Lake Michigan from the lake bluff and shoreline path accessible through the beautiful Concordia University Wisconsin campus.

The Mequon Nature Preserve encompasses 438 acres of land offering visitors five miles of hiking trails, a 50-foot observation tower and an education center. The geography includes emerging forests, natural wetlands and a restored prairie. Restoring the area began in 2000, transforming farmland into a rolling landscape covered with Maples, Oaks and other plant species consistent with the pre-settlement environment. The Preserve provides students, youth groups and the public an outdoor classroom to explore the habitat as well as an indoor education center. For more information, visit mequonnaturepreserve.org. In addition to the parks and preserves, there are several golf courses in the area. Golfers can hit the green at Mee-Kwon Park Golf Course or at one of the local County Clubs; The River Club of Mequon, North Shore Country Club or Ozaukee Country Club. Golfers can practice their chipping, putting and full swings throughout the winter at the Pin High Golf Center which features an indoor course and golf simulator as well as multiple outdoor courses. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy the scenic Ozaukee Interurban Trail which spans 30 miles, beginning in Mequon and continuing across all of Ozaukee County. The trail is a paved, free-to-the-public path and is a designated â&#x20AC;&#x153;Great Wisconsin Birding Trail.â&#x20AC;? Visitors to the trail experience picturesque views of the Milwaukee River, Lake Michigan, Cedar Creek, wetlands, historic downtowns, forests and farmland all while walking, biking, running, skating or cross-country skiing.

There are more palatial abodes available at prices topping $1 million, with a few priced as high as more than $3 million. The Hidden Lake subdivision, west of N. Range Line Road and just north of the Ozaukee County line, has some of the most opulent homes in Mequon. A house recently on the market, built on a two-acre lot in 1999 and boasting 10,000 square feet of living space, was listed at $3.295 million. A building boom in the 1990s saw the establishment of The Pines on the east side of Mequon. Like Hidden Lake, The Pines is home to large lots and many houses that approach or exceed seven-figure prices. Other similar subdivisions in this area include Stonefield and Eastwyn Bay, where buyers will find highly desirable lakeside properties.

The school district purchased the land several decades ago with the expectation of accommodating a spike in enrollment with the building of a new school building. When that rise in enrollment didn’t materialize, the land was sold. The site is located between Wauwatosa and Swan roads, south of the Knightsbridge and Brighton Ridge subdivisions. Developers are building single family homes there that will be priced at between $400,000 and $600,000.

Historically a heavily agricultural area that today remains home to considerable farmland acreage, Mequon really began to develop as a residential community in the 1960s. Several older neighborhoods in Mequon give buyers an opportunity to discover a selection of ranchstyle homes and basic two-story homes. There are also some houses located along the Milwaukee River where residents can avail themselves of boating opportunities and, when the water is sufficiently frozen in the winter, snowmobiling.

Baumann said the area will reflect Mequon’s efforts to foster the creation of what are known as “conservation subdivisions.” Between tracts of lots where houses will stand will be several lots that will remain undeveloped, preserving green space and enhancing residents’ quality of life. Those lots typically provide parks, walking trails, community gardens, playgrounds and other outdoor amenities for residents. One of the new subdivisions, Highlander Estates, is being built by Neumann Companies and will feature 33 percent open space. The other, The Enclave at Mequon Preserve, is being developed by Veridian Homes. Located just south of Route 167 and west of Route 181, this development is close to the Mequon Nature Preserve. Homes here start at $510,000. Baumann said most houses available in Mequon are priced around $300,000 to $400,000, but there is also housing stock in Mequon priced between $200,000 and $300,000. Mequon enjoys a very low tax rate compared to many other communities in the area.

Newer homes, built close to the turn of the 21st century, can be found in the Ridgeview subdivision on the far west side of Mequon. Mequon also has a selection of condominiums for sale. Renters looking for multi-family housing have a choice of several apartment communities, including Mequon Trail Townhomes, near the northeast corner of Route 167 and Route 181. Construction on the new Mequon Town Center, a development that includes apartments along with retail spaces, businesses and commercial enterprises, continues as developers unveil opportunities for high-end renters looking for luxury and proximity to services and shopping opportunities in Mequon. The City of Mequon, with a population of about 23,000, covers about 49 square miles. Near the center of the city is a onesquare-mile parcel that is the Village of Thiensville, with a population of 3,200. Thiensville has an older housing stock with prices that range from about $200,000 to $400,000. Property taxes in Thiensville are slightly higher than taxes in Mequon because the tiny village supports its own village government and associated services. 

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT I n the making for about 10 years, the most significant change on the economic development scene in Mequon is the Mequon Town Center, a development that is fast creating a focal point for the community.

Anchored around a mix of retail establishments, luxury apartments and other amenities, the development on the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s west side balances the lure of the lively shopping

Apartments at Mequon Town Center have two and three-bedroom floor plans that offer living space that ranges from 1,400 to 2,200 square feet, underground parking,

The development has been led by Cindy Shaffer of Shaffer Development. Plans for an expansion of the project to the west, with more residential units, retail and office space, along with a market, are in the works.

Located just 15 miles north of Milwaukee along the shores of Lake Michigan, Mequon has a population of about 22,000. Tollefson said the population is neither growing nor declining. Most residents are in the higher income brackets and most skew a bit older with the median age being 45.

Mequon Town Center brings a decidedly urban flair to an upscale area that enjoys the relative calm of a rural setting, lending an air of diversity to the landscape. Kim Tollefson, Director of Community Development in Mequon, said much of the City’s 49 square miles remain agriculturally-based, with crops and livestock dotting the countryside, especially in the northern and western portions of the city. Mequon has a time-honored history and tradition of holding conservation in high regard, encouraging low-density growth and building fewer roads and urban infrastructure so that Mequon has been able to retain a more rural feel. Residents enjoy the convenience provided by big-city amenities as close-by as a 15-minute drive while also deriving peace and pleasure from the area’s natural environs, where

Mequon enjoyed an economic boom in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but underwent a decline in residential population after the 2008 economic downturn. Since then, she said, the city has been rebounding strongly, regaining its economic footing. Economic recovery has been aided, in part, by a change in city zoning rules that allows for houses to be built on one-acre lots. Previously the minimum lot size was five acres. The rezoning of a 380-acre parcel has encouraged the development of two subdivisions on the city’s west side. The city is home to business parks and corporate centers, with solid commercial corridors featuring a variety of retail establishments on both the east and west sides. 

owned restaurants, coffee houses, shops, galleries, professional offices and more. The Thiensville Business Association hosts a popular outdoor Village Market at Thiensville Village Park every Tuesday between June and October.

The Village of Thiensville, just over onesquare-mile in size, is surrounded by Mequon on all sides and has a population of about 3,200. Thiensville’s residential areas are built out, said Van Mobley, village president. Older houses that have been refurbished bolster the village’s strong economic base, attracting buyers. The village offers large ranch-style houses that sell for between $200,000 and $270,000. There are also two-story homes on the village’s north side priced around $300,000.

The Thiensville business district continues to grow. In 2016, a new three-story medical building opened downtown. The Thiensville Health Alliance building located on Main Street brings a variety of complementary medical services to the community all under one roof. The building was developed by Dr. Gary Lewis and Andrea Mayerson. Dr. Lewis previously operated an independent medical practice in downtown Thiensville and saw this development as an opportunity to expand his own offices and accommodate other wellness related businesses.

Mobley said the village is seeing a rebound in interest and prices of condominiums. Apartments built in the late ‘60s are undergoing condo conversions. The White Coach condominium development on S. Main Street is expanding with the construction of a 16-unit building, he said.

Port Washington State Bank is building a new bank branch on Main Street in Thiensville and will open in the spring of 2017. Mobley mentioned several parcels of land along N. Main Street and on Green Bay Road are ripe for redevelopment.

hether it’s an occasional trip to the doctor for a minor ailment or regular treatments for chronic conditions, Mequon and Thiensville residents are well-situated, with a number of excellent health care providers located right in their own backyards. An abundance of health care options are available, providing residents with a wide range of emergency, primary and specialized care. On the northeast side of the city, Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee, part of Ascension, offers the community a 182-bed community hospital. The medical campus also includes a Physician Office Building, Lawliss Family Hospice and the Columbia Birth Center Birth Hospital. Located on N. Port Washington Road , the hospital features an awardwinning Cancer Center, one of 74 U.S. healthcare facilities with accredited cancer programs to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The hospital is also home to an accredited chest pain center and an accredited stroke center. The facility offers substance abuse treatment, pain management, pulmonary medicine and orthopaedic , cardiovascular, rehabilitation and gastroenterology services. Patients visiting this location of the Ascension medical health system also will find a Vascular Institute, a Continence Center, a Perinatal Assessment Center, podiatry care, robotic surgery and plastic and reconstructive surgery services.

Aurora Health Center Mequon, located at 12203 Corporate Parkway on Mequon’s east side, offers clinic services, including primary and specialty care for adults and children, diagnostic testing, lab work and imaging. Specialty care includes family medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics and general surgery. The health center is part of a network of 15 hospitals, 150 clinics and 70 pharmacies that serve eastern Wisconsin and is headquartered in Milwaukee. More than 20 pediatric specialties are available at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin’s Mequon Clinic. The clinic, located on the east side of the city at 1655 W. Mequon Road, just west of Route 43, opened its doors in early August 2016. A pediatric eye clinic was added at this location in the fall of 2016. The Mequon Clinic offers both primary care and specialty care for children. On nights and weekends, the urgent care center is open as the area’s only walk-in urgent care center exclusively designed to treat kids. On-site laboratory services and imaging services, including MRI, ultrasound, fluoroscopy and x-ray, are available. The campus is also home to the Skywalk Pharmacy, where pediatric medications and specialty products for children and moms are available. The campus offers ease and convenience for parents and patients, bringing many of Children’s services to Mequon, said Juliet Kersten, vice 

president, ambulatory and regional services. Another relative newcomer to the area will be the Froedtert and Medical College of Wisconsin health network, which plans to open a clinic on Mequon’s east side in late 2017. The clinic will offer primary care, Urgent Care, Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, Physical Therapy, Lab, Radiology and a few other specialty services, said Andrew Dresang, Froedtert’s director of community engagement.

The clinic will be located near the corner of North Port Washington Road and Venture Court. Since the fall of 2015, Wright House Senior Living of Mequon has offered assisted living services for patients with memory impairment. The facility offers private apartments, nursing and personal care, social events and assistance with scheduling and transportation for medical appointments. The facility is located at 6729 W. Mequon Road.
