WELCOME TO THE
2018 Riverwalk Fine Art Fair
T
hirty-three years ago, the Naperville Art League hosted the inaugural Riverwalk Fine Art Fair, the first juried fine art fair in the area. Noted at the time for being the largest outdoor art exhibition the western suburb had ever mounted, the show gained international recognition when 39 residents and art league members, along with two dogs, joined together for a re-enactment of Georges Seurat’s painting, “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” in support of the planned “Art Comes Alive” weekend. The live simulation ignited a passion in the arts and the momentum has never stopped. Thanks to the efforts of countless sponsors, artists, program organizers, groups, and volunteers who work continually throughout the year, the Riverwalk Fine Art Fair brings you one of the top outdoor fine art fairs in the nation. The spirit of creativity and expression has never been more evident as we present 130 of the finest artists and craftsmen from the United States and beyond. We invite you to experience the beautiful display of artwork while exploring the variety of media, including painting, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, 2-D and 3-D mixed media, drawing, fiber arts and much more. This year, the Naperville Art League serves not only as host of the Riverwalk Fine Art Fair but as the presenting sponsor as well. The League’s Board of Directors wish to thank Naperville Bank and Trust for their continued support and generosity as a sponsor. In addition, they extend their appreciation to the City of Naperville, the Naperville Park District, Naperville Public Library, the City Clerk’s Office, Community Radio Watch and the numerous volunteers from the Naperville Art League for their efforts. The collective commitment to this event ensures a successful celebration of the arts that enriches the lives of many. Enjoy!
Sincerely, Deborah Venezia Director of the 2018 Riverwalk Fine Art Fair

2018 JUDGES Donna Castellanos
Donna Castellanos has been a lifelong resident of Elmhurst, where she continues to give back to the community through her work as an artist, curator and educator. After receiving a degree in graphic design from the American Academy of Art, Chicago, Donna spent five years in the field of advertising. Feeling unfulfilled, she left her profession and began to dabble in visual and wearable arts. While raising her two children, Donna was able to define her style and fell in love with found objects, a medium she incorporates into her paintings, sculptures, jewelry and clothing. Donna serves as the Education Program Coordinator at the Elmhurst Art Museum where she teaches mixed media classes as well as designs interactive interpretive displays for the museum’s major exhibitions. Earlier this year, Donna’s work was featured in “Rescuer of Once Loved Things,” a display that showcased her innovative use of items including recycled encyclopedias, nails, textiles, and musical instruments. Attendees were invited to explore their own creativity through interactive activities and assisted Donna in giving the once loved things a new life.

NAPERVILLE ART LEAGUE INSPIRING PASSION IN THE ARTS
N
aperville Art League (NAL), a nonprofit volunteer organization, comprises more than 200 local artists and art enthusiasts whose creativity makes the organization new every day. NAL’s mission is to “provide art instruction and education, encourage interest in all forms of creative art, and stimulate understanding and appreciation of art in the community.” From its beginning in 1961, the organization has impacted the Naperville community through fostering public art, providing classes for all ages and skill levels, presenting culturally enriching gallery shows, and hosting special events including the award-winning Riverwalk Fine Art Fair.
Bringing you one of the best art fairs in the nation
6 I 2018 RIVERWALK FINE ART FAIR
The Riverwalk Fine Art Fair has gained national recognition over its 33-year history. As host, NAL made great strides by engaging the
corporate community through sponsorship opportunities, enabling the show to flourish. Dedicated NAL members also contribute to the success of the event as they continue to lend their time and talent to assist with every aspect of the festival. This cooperative spirit plays a major role in bringing artists and art fair goers together to create one of the top outdoor art fairs in the country.
Dedicated to the community NAL strives to make an artistic mark on the local community. In 1984, NAL began to foster the development of public art in Naperville when they commissioned one of the first sculptures in town: the striking 15-foot-high, red sculpture just west of Eagle St. at the city’s Riverwalk entitled “Landforms” by artist Jack Arnold. Efforts continue as NAL supports the Century Walk, Naperville’s captivating public art project, as it advances in depth and magnitude.

The League’s Naperville Fine Art Center & Gallery, located at 508 N. Center St. in Naperville, is a resource to the community year-round for art, classes, special exhibits, auctions, and more. Each month, new gallery exhibits showcase the work of talented member artists. These shows provide opportunities for art enthusiasts and collectors to purchase quality, original art at reasonable prices while giving members the ability to display their pieces in a gallery setting. Visitors are invited to also enjoy the “Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists” mural on the building’s exterior. Designed by author/illustrator Mike Venezia and painted by Marianne Lisson Kuhn, it is one of the most colorful pieces on Naperville’s Century Walk. The Gallery is open to the public. Check the website for hours.
In addition to monthly members’ shows, NAL opens its gallery to traveling exhibits, fiber art displays, art auctions for area nonprofits, and individual shows by both emerging and established artists. The public is invited to experience the versatility of the visual arts by attending these unique events. Whether it be the emotionally stirring photos of a young girl and her family from “Anne Frank: A Private Photo Album” Traveling Exhibit or the humorous twist on the work of the great masters in the annual “Fabulous Fakes” show, viewers will be captivated. NAL also stages a public art competition and exhibition each spring where artists of all skill levels from the community are invited to submit pieces for judging and prizes.

rts DuPage Month makes its debut in October 2018, bringing with it an invitation to discover the vibrant arts scene flourishing within DuPage County. Launched by Arts DuPage, a countywide arts council operating under the wing of the DuPage Foundation, Arts DuPage Month shines a light on the entertaining, provocative, and unique art and cultural experiences available locally. Following in the footsteps of Americans for the Arts, Arts DuPage Month was modeled after Arts & Humanities month, a coast-to-coast collective recognition of the importance of culture in America. Through this initiative, artists, businesses, and art lovers connect and engage in amazing offerings that may otherwise go unnoticed. Arts DuPage takes the national focus and drives it home to DuPage County to showcase the rich artistic local landscape that surrounds and inspires us. All Arts DuPage Month events are enhanced with special twists and incentives so that participants can enjoy elevated artistic encounters that include guest speakers, admission discounts, backstage tours and delicious treats. By upping the ante, Arts DuPage aims to attract those resistant to the arts and show them that there is an exciting world of activities waiting to be discovered. Designated Arts DuPage Month events can easily be found on www. ArtsDuPage.org, DuPage County’s comprehensive website featuring arts and cultural events and activities. The website is easy to navigate and features separate searchable categories in theater, music, dance, visual arts, museums, art festivals, literature, family fun, classes and free events as

ARTIST PROFILE Sharon Matusiak & Robin L. Washburn Owner of Wolf Creek Studio Marion, IL Medium: Mixed Media Welcome to Wolf Creek Studio where we believe art should be inspiring, engaging, rejuvenating and spiritual. We work collaboratively as a husband-and-wife team to illustrate our path in life. As we continue to evolve through our craft, we have taken a departure from the abstract geometric design we used for some years and have returned to the use of symbolic imagery. Most recently we directed our focus on the iconic forms of boats, nests and books. The boat represents the spiritual journey: it has been used in funeral rites, for the exploration of, and travel around, the planet, for the gathering of food, for waging war and for recreation. Foregoing realism, we favor the idea of each boat, and find meaning in its shape, its utility and its accoutrements. Each sculpture stands as a testament of our development as artists seeking significance in life. Books are the physical embodiment of knowledge and enlightenment, the teller of stories, the keeper of secrets and ultimately the record of our history. These sculptural icons stand as our interpretation of this important cultural symbol that we fear is fading into oblivion.

Naperville’s Convention and Visitors Bureau welcomes you to the Riverwalk Fine Art Fair
C
ome enjoy the annual Naperville Riverwalk Fine Art Fair and the incredible works of art that will be on display along the Naperville Riverwalk and throughout the downtown city streets. Because this festival is located on Naperville’s most well-known landmark, the scenery alone will delight you. The winding brick pathways, architecture, sparkling fountains and covered bridges all make the Riverwalk an award winning attraction. The Riverwalk itself has some artwork of its own. As you take a leisurely stroll, observe the Century Walk sculptures. These — as well as the many multihued mosaics and colorful murals located throughout downtown — depict people, places and moments that convey Naperville’s rich history. Downtown streets are always alive in this city, so the presence of these works will only enhance the fun of Naperville.
The Millennium Carillon stands 16 stories above the Riverwalk. Learn about the musical tower and the 72 bronze bells through interactive exhibits in the adjacent visitor’s center. Tour the tower, climb to the observation deck and enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding area. The Naperville Convention & Visitors Bureau proudly supports and reveres the Riverwalk Fine Art Fair and its creation of an art-conscious community in Naperville. Because of this, the Bureau is more than happy to help plan a stay or recommend dining and other Naperville attractions around the art fair. There are plenty of things to do and places to visit while you are in downtown Naperville for the art fair! Naper Settlement, a living history museum and main attraction in the downtown area, is spread across 12 acres just steps away from the art festival site.
The Settlement hosts a number of signature events including the Weed Ladies Fall Floral Sale, Oktoberfest and All Hallows Eve. There is always something going on at Naper Settlement. The DuPage Children’s Museum is filled with educational fun for children, as well as adults. Bring your youngsters to the museum to enhance the whole family’s experience in the downtown area. Pay this Naperville favorite a visit to increase your festival fun and learning. If you are looking to catch a concert or theatrical performance, North Central College’s Performing Arts District has a variety of shows throughout the year. Their theaters and venues are just steps away from the downtown area, so dinner and a show would fit nicely into your plans. Pair your day on the town with a great meal. Naperville is filled with a variety of cuisine options in various

IndieBound Movement, a real force in Naperville, celebrates 10 years of community strength
I
n 2008, Anderson’s Bookshops linked with IndieBound, a unique, community-oriented movement that celebrates independent bookstores and promotes locally owned businesses. Now, a decade later, the IndieBound Naperville group is thriving with over 150 members. Anderson’s Bookshops adopted the program in July 2008, and today it’s easy to spot the bold, red IndieBound logo throughout our community. The group’s website, http:// indieboundnaperville.org, is the online resource for Naperville’s local independent business alliance. A summer Where’s Waldo event and a holiday Grinch program have been IndieBound Naperville promotions that have become highly anticipated annual events and new local traditions. “As local retailers, we have a vested interest in serving our neighbors,” says founding IndieBound Naperville member Becky Anderson, co-owner of Anderson’s Bookshops.
“We’re absolutely passionate about what we do, and this is another opportunity for us to cater to our community.”
Consumers are thoughtfully choosing independent businesses over national chains, and the “shop local” movements have reached the
mainstream. Key is that shopping locally bolsters local economies and fosters a stronger sense of community connectedness.

Acappellago to make Riverwalk debut this year 14 I 2018 RIVERWALK FINE ART FAIR
A
cappellago is excited to be making its Naperville Riverwalk Fine Art Fair debut this year. We will be serenading the assembled art-lovers with an appropriately colorful selection of songs from our concert “Escape to … The Wonderful World of Color,” presented in March at Mayslake Peabody Estate in Oak Brook and the Congregational Church of Batavia. From “Blue Moon” to “Orange-Colored Sky” to “Green Grow the Lilacs” to “Brown-Eyed Girl,” Acappellago offers something for every musical taste. Founded in 2002, Acappellago is the leading volunteer a cappella ensemble of the Western suburbs, offering experienced choral singers an opportunity to perform a wide range of music for appreciative audiences in DuPage and Kane counties. We perform two concerts per season, one at the beginning of December and one in mid-March, and we can also be seen at community events like this one, as well as singing the national anthem for local baseball, softball and hockey teams. Maestro Dennis Smith has eclectic tastes and his programs span pop, jazz, gospel and classical music. We particularly prize our excellent relationships with active composers, and we regularly present Chicago-area, U.S., and even international premieres of works from all over the world. We have commissioned pieces from several composers as well. Acappellago is supported by individual contributions and by grants from Arts DuPage and the Illinois Arts Council.

E
xplore, create, build, wonder, discover, think, play and more. Every visit to DuPage Children’s Museum (DCM) is a new adventure where play leads the way! Great artists were once children and we all begin in the same way. At DCM we value all the stages of creative expression and ability from the simplest scribble to the most spectacular use of materials, and all efforts are valid from educational and early childhood development perspectives. The Studio, in the Museum, provides a safe and affirming environment with the freedom to explore process and materials and encourages self-expression while building the foundation for creative thinking and problem solving. A favorite stop for many Museum visitors, The Studio always offers something new to explore. In addition to creating works of art, visitors can view the more than 55 pieces of professional artwork on display in the Museum. Each piece of artwork is carefully selected to connect to the area in which it is displayed, integrating art into math and science concepts. Viewing high-quality art is an important way to stimulate observations by children — you can look at a masterwork and see something different each time. Because there is no wrong interpretation when viewing art, it fits perfectly into the Museum’s open-ended approach. The museum is a unique learning environment offering over 17,000 square feet of exhibit space packed with innovative, hands-on ways to explore math, science, art and where they intersect. Inspire your creativity and plan your visit today. Visit dupagechildrens.org for more details.
Cat Guardians Protect ‘Street Cats’
F
ounded in 1988, Cat Guardians, Inc. is a no-kill, cageless cat shelter in Lombard that fills a unique place in the community. Its mission and focus is on the rescue, rehabilitating and re-homing of the stray and feral cat population in DuPage County. Where other rescues and animal welfare organizations take in cats that owners surrender, Cat Guardians chooses to accept the cats that fall through the cracks, those that we call “street cats.” Caring for these street cats is no easy work. Cat Guardians relies solely on volunteers to carry out the day-to-day activities such as feeding the cats, administering medication, cleaning litter boxes and the facility, and much more. The shelter is funded completely through the generous donations of supporters and community members like you. Since its inception, the shelter has seen over 2,000 cats pass through its doors, many of which have been
placed into forever homes. Cats that are unadoptable due to age or medical constraints are allowed to live out their lives happily in the shelter where they are pleased to do what they want as they roam around the cageless facility. Cat Guardians does not employ euthanasia except in extreme circumstances in which medical conditions are such that prolonging a cat’s life would no longer be humane. Due to its no-kill policy, Cat Guardians is usually filled to its legal capacity of feline residents. Today, some 50 cats and a rotating population of kittens reside at Cat Guardians shelter. Although some cats and kittens are caged for their protection (due to illness, skittishness, aggression or their young age), most roam freely, having the freedom to play or nap in their choice spots. If you are interested in adopting a cat or kitten, doing some much-needed volunteer work, or donating, you can contact the shelter through our website: www. CatGuardians.org. Consider adopting today!
O
nce again, the Naperville Art League has partnered with Kiwanis Club of Naperville to show support for Kiwanis Peanut Days, a fundraising campaign that supports agencies and organizations throughout DuPage County. DuPage Children’s Museum, Edward Foundation, Feed My Starving Children, Family Shelter Services, Families Helping Families, Loaves & Fishes, Meals on Wheels, Operation Support Our Troops, Samaritan Interfaith, Special
Olympics-Illinois and Turning Pointe Autism Foundation are among the nonprofits that have benefitted from the donations collected by Kiwanis volunteers in exchange for bags of tasty peanuts. The Kiwanis Club of Naperville has been serving Naperville and the surrounding communities since 1955. The club annually provides almost 10,000 hours of volunteer service, where recruits work in the food pantry, deliver meals, cut grass, clean
up roads, and assist at hospital drives. The list of service projects is endless. Kiwanis Club supports local volunteer school clubs from middle school, through high school and into college. Please consider supporting those in need by stopping by the Kiwanis booths at each main entrance to the Art Fair or visit their website at Naperville-evening.kiwanisone. org to find out more about the membership opportunities or to consider a donation.
