ne of the best kept secrets as far as suburbs go is New Rochelle in lower Westchester. Just North of Orchard Beach in the Bronx and the first stop on the Metro North New Haven Line Express, it’s an easy commute from New York City and the Bronx. A city with approximately 80,000 people, New Rochelle consists of a very diverse population. Even with this melting pot of cultures the city is ranked not only one of the safest places to live, but also one of the best cities to raise children in the United States. The residents are buzzing with excitement because along with these impressive statistics, at the 2016 Chamber of Commerce Sponsored State of the City Address New Rochelle’s Mayor Noam Bramson and its city council unveiled a huge development plan for its downtown business district. This update will include more retail space and housing that aims to attract the millennial generation and to add to some of the mom-and-pop stores still thriving after 90 years, like Liebman’s, a uniform and specialty apparel store established as early as 1926. In addition to the business district, New Rochelle is bordered by three colleges: The College of New Rochelle, Iona College and Monroe College. Each is growing by leaps and bounds and all are involved in gentrifying their surrounding communities –they’re building, and with each brick, growing in the national rankings of colleges as well. Monroe College even added an award winning School of Hospitality to the New Rochelle campus that touts its own Culinary Institute. So if you’re not in the mood to travel three hours to Hyde Park to get a discounted gourmet meal, you can get one right here, only a short drive away, for less than $30 a person. Call (914) 740-6421 for reservations. On most days you can also walk in its Pastry Kiosk and buy a gourmet boxed lunch for only $6. No one is completely sure of whether it’s the result of having a Culinary Institute where some of the students are living right here in town, or because of its mosaic of cultures, but New Rochelle is becoming quite the “foodie” town. Restaurants are popping up all over that are easily tantalizing residents to jet set it and eat a different cuisine every night. No matter what your palate desires you can find it here. In fact, the New Rochelle Chamber of Commerce sponsored a citywide

In addition to an eclectic mix of cuisines, New Rochelle has several parks mostly bordered by the Long Island Sound. At Glen Island Park, you could ride your bike along the glistening marina and the sound. At Five Island Park, you can utilize the kayak program on weekend mornings and at Pine Brook Tennis, you can play tennis surrounded by a beautiful hiking trail. At Hudson Park, you will be able to hear opera at its newly renovated bandshell. Something truly unique in New Rochelle is its devotion to the arts. Each year, the New Rochelle Opera puts on a major performance at the Ursuline School. Also, in downtown there are many art studios, including the most famous one of Charles Fazzino, where all of his art is made and, if you are fan or simply interested in his pop-up art, you can tour the studio during New Rochelle’s Arts Fest in mid-September. ew Rochelle has a unique mix of cultures. This diversity creates a demand for an equally diverse group of cuisines. Besides having a Culinary Institute to visit right in town at Monroe College, a local or epicurean can eat a different cuisine every night and be incredibly pleased. With its rich Italian roots, New Rochelle has no shortage of great Italian restaurants. So if you’re in the mood for an authentic Chicken or Eggplant Parmesan, Modern Restaurant and Lounge on Huguenot Street and Mamma Francesca’s on Pelham Road are the places to visit. Sorell Wine Bar and Lounge serves a Northern Italian risotto that tastes as good as it smells when you walk through the door, and Giovanni will help you pick out the wine in the adjoining wine store shop. On the other end of Pelham Road is Patsy’s, serving

up a crispy brick oven pizza with a view of New Rochelle’s marina. A little farther North is Fratelli Ristorante and Wine Bar, which has a sauce that will make you feel like you visited Grandma on Sunday; and at Carlo’s Pizzeria on Boston Post Road, if you order the spicy Chicken Scarpiello you’ll dream about it for weeks. some of the other restaurants that have a Latin or Caribbean flair. Mangoville on the East End of North Avenue adds just the right amount of spice in its curry dishes and also has a night scene that’s lots of fun. Alvin and Friends located near the New Rochelle Public Library frequently has live music. But if you can’t arrive during the entertainment hours, Alvin’s welcoming smile and the Jerk Rubbed Duck Breast will charm you to return. Another chic place that just celebrated its grand opening is Rooster, which has a 5 p.m. happy hour daily where Chef Carlos serves tasty appetizers. If he doesn’t serve the Los Montaditos (filled plantain cups), order it anyway – they’re worth it. If you’re looking for pub food, go to Beechmont Tavern, across from Iona College where they serve fresh juicy burgers “never frozen” on pretzel buns and General Manager Rob Hayes will argue his wings are the best in Westchester. Also close to Iona College is Smokehouse Tailgate Grill, which has tasty ribs and buffalo chicken dip that rivals those in Texas. The Wooden Spoon, located in the heart of New Rochelle on Division Street, which is starting to look like Restaurant Row, has a macaroni and cheese that will make you wish you were a kid again. If all this has you wondering if any of these places are kosher or vegan, visit Got Thyme on the north end of New Rochelle for lunch or let them cater your next event. If you’ve “got time” and you’re in the mood for a cup of coffee after lunch, look for the New Rochelle Coffee Shop in the Quaker Ridge Shopping Center. The owners, Helen and Taso will make you feel like you stopped by your sister’s kitchen for a chat. However, if you’re still in the Boston Post Road area, visit Pop’s Espresso Bar and get a Donnoli, which is a donut filled with cannoli cream. We know someone who’s not allowed to visit his daughter in college without them.

ew Rochelle High School in New York prides itself on diversity. About 3,400 students from 60 countries pass through its doors. The high school offers a vast array of more than 240 desirable courses, including architecture, business, fine arts, computer science and 40 Advanced Placement (AP) and honors classes. “We offer a rigorous college preparatory curriculum that is aligned to the common core learning standards,” Principal Reginald Richardson said. “Because we are committed to developing fully prepared and engaged 21st century citizens, our academic program provides students with opportunities to explore a wide variety of interests beyond the state mandated curriculum.” The high school’s mission statement is as follows:

“New Rochelle High School, with its smaller learning communities, is dedicated to developing responsible, respectful, tolerant citizens who value cultural diversity and who possess the intellectual, social and emotional independence to become lifelong learners and contributing members of a global society.” The high school is part of the award-winning City School District of New Rochelle, which is home to nearly 11,000 students and 10 schools. Other schools include an early childhood center, six elementary schools and two middle schools. “The City School District of New Rochelle, through an active partnership amongst community, parents, staff and students, will provide access to a high-quality and challenging education for every child, in a safe, nurturing environment that embraces our rich diversity and drives our success,” Superintendent Brian Osborne said. The district is in the midst of a five-year, $106.5 million strategic improvement plan. The bond, approved by voters, is aimed at funding fund health and safety upgrades to every school. Scheduled updates include replacements of some roofs and windows, as well as the pavement and drainage infrastructure. In addition, masonry work and ADA compliance upgrades have been slated. Superintendent Osborne called the district one that is committed to providing a learning environment “where our students are challenged,

engaged, and love to learn.” Recently, the district celebrated many student accomplishments, including:  Six National Merit Scholarship finalists  Chess team wins  Finalists in the MIT Inspire Competition  A U.S. Presidential Scholar  Division 1 college athletic scholarships  Winning the SIFMA (Securities Industry & Financial Markets Association) Stock Market Game  And music, art and theater recognitions

New Rochelle administrators believe that it is a school’s job to find out what makes each individual student flourish. There is no broad brush for school success. Individual attention is key. “Every child deserves the opportunity to shine, whether academically, through the arts, in sports or via community service,”

Osborne wrote in a regular online column he pens. That means offering a robust curriculum and creative solutions to financial constraints that may limit beloved extracurricular activities, such as the arts and service clubs, that are particularly meaningful to some students, he added. New Rochelle promotes a well-rounded school experience, as evidenced by some of the district’s more unusual athletics offerings such as rugby and a merged ski team with a nearby school district. But to prove that the ultimate emphasis is on academics, the superintendent notes that five teams (boys’ varsity cross country, girls’ varsity cross country, girls’ varsity soccer, girls’ varsity swimming and girls’ varsity tennis) earned prestigious New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Scholar-Athlete Team Awards. These awards are only given out when members of a team maintain report card averages of 90 percent or greater during a sport’s season, Osborne noted. The district believes in educating the whole child – meaning educating the family as well. One example of that is the partnership it’s had with My Sisters’ Place, a domestic violence awareness organization. Since 2011, the organization has gone into the district’s schools to teach and model examples of healthy relationships and to define and expose what abuse looks like. An extension of this partnership is Project Team On, which provides training and education to cheer, football, soccer, and volleyball teams, as well as workshops for coaches, older students and their parents. Their “Vision 2020” plan aims to reduce the achievement gap – a national goal emphasized by many educational experts and associations. In other words, they are using data to even the educational playing field by diminishing disparities in outcomes related to categories like race, disability and geography, to name a few. ontefiore New Rochelle Hospital knows it’s not just what’s on the inside that counts; it’s what’s outside, too. That’s why, in addition to its many medical industry accolades, the hospital just snagged a unique award for environmental awareness as part of the Westchester Green Business Challenge. The recognition was for implementing several materials-related initiatives, including purchasing environmentally-friendly and recycled products, which means the hospital saves 674,329 gallons of oil and 12 million gallons of water yearly. In addition, the hospital installed a biodigester, which is a machine that prevents at least 300 pounds of organic food waste from being tossed into landfills every day. “We are proud to earn this certification for our sustainability efforts,” said Tony Alfano, the facility’s vice president and executive director. “Sustainability is a team effort, and by working closely with our engineering department, we have been able to eliminate organic waste from garbage and create a healthier environment for our community.” The Westchester Green Business Certification award recognizes organizations that are leaders in incorporating sustainability into all aspects of business. “Hospitals inevitably consume large amounts of energy to provide the highest quality of care for our patients,” said Jeff Hogan, energy and sustainability manager for Montefiore. “We set our goal for a 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. By continuing our commitment to being the most sustainable health care provider in New York

City, we are directly achieving our mission of advancing the health of the communities we serve. The hospital, which was founded in 1892, is the city’s largest employer. At the helm is Vice President and Executive Director Anthony Alfano, who was appointed in 2013. Earlier this year, New Rochelle officials approved a zoning change to pave the way for new workforce housing near the hospital. The idea is to create additional, convenient housing at below-market rates to primarily attract doctors and nurses to live nearby. Montefiore New Rochelle is part of a larger Montefiore health system, which includes 10 hospitals; a primary and specialty care network of

more than 150 locations across Westchester County, the lower Hudson Valley and the Bronx; an extended-care facility; the Montefiore School of Nursing and its Albert Einstein College of Medicine. “At Montefiore, we believe health care should be easy to access, local and tailored to the needs of the communities,” Dr. Steven Safyer, president and CEO of Montefiore, said. Earlier this year, Montefiore launched a new brand campaign called “Doing More.” “’Doing More’” is what we do every day,” according to Dr. Safyer. “Montefiore’s ‘Doing More’ campaign celebrates the art and science of achieving remarkable outcomes for our patients and our communities.” Montefiore New Rochelle specifically boasts several distinctions, including:  Designation as a Center of Excellence by the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.  Designation as a New York State Stroke Center.  Designation as a New York State perinatal hospital with a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that provides state-of-the-art care for fragile newborns.  Receipt of American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) cancer program accreditation.  Receipt of the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission as a certified Center of Excellence in both hip and knee joint replacement. The hospital has arguably come a long way in a short amount of time. It was formally known as the struggling Sound Shore Hospital. Montefiore took control of it and a sister hospital – and their hefty debts – in 2013 as part of a merger. “Providing ongoing jobs and supporting the local economy are important benefits of a vital health care system,” Dr. Safyer said. “We are making a long-term commitment to lower Westchester to support and improve the health of area residents as well as the health of the local economy.” Earlier this year, Montefiore New Rochelle was awarded $44 million by New York State through its Delivery System Reform Incentive Program (DSRIP) capital restructuring financing program. The funds are earmarked to construct Montefiore New Rochelle Medical Village, which entails a renovation of the ambulatory health center, emergency department, and imaging services to provide better integrated advanced primary and specialty care to the residents of surrounding communities. The money is part of a $1.5 billion statewide initiative to improve New York health care facilities.
