’Fallon has a rich heritage with deep roots. In 1854, the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad built a depot named O’Fallon Station—in honor of one of St. Louis’s prominent businessmen—in the heart of the present historic district. The railroad has always played an important role in the history of the community.

enjoys both business and residential growth, while it has also managed to maintain its small-town appeal. We pride ourselves in living in a community that really cares about our friends and neighbors. Whether you are just visiting or thinking of joining us, we welcome you to O’Fallon and hope your stay is a most pleasant one.

It was during the 19th century that German immigrant farmers and businessmen settled the community. Rich coalfields were discovered near O’Fallon in the mid-1800s and it, too, is an important thread in the city’s historic tapestry. There are many reasons to live in O’Fallon, nearly 30,000 in fact. They are the friendly neighbors who are proud to call this city their home. The community

’Fallon and Shiloh support the needs of many generations. We have strong primary and secondary education programs and activities for youth, but we are also excellent places to retire. If you look at what makes a community great to age in place, O’Fallon-Shiloh can check all the boxes.

O

Housing options in the community reflect the evolving needs and expectations of an older generation. You can find a wide range of housing at various levels of affordability. Cambridge House provides assisted living for all income levels and is a comfortable alternative to maintaining a large home for those who would like to downsize. The new Colonnade in O’Fallon and Shiloh’s two assisted living facilities, Cedarhurst and The Fountains, also provide assisted living options for many different levels of need. Independent housing that is affordable is also available and exists in areas that are accessible to recreation and commerce. Although more than 80 percent of adults over 65 own and live in their own home it is important to have many options in the community, and O’Fallon-Shiloh do just that. Aging sometimes involves a deterioration of physical and functional skills which make driving more difficult. Living independently requires older adults to maintain mobility. In most communities this means owning and driving your own car. Rotary Wheels, the O’Fallon van and Christian Home Care Services, which provides one-on-one transportation, are available to residents. These are great options for older adults who no longer drive. If a person does drive they may notice that the community is

20

placing greater emphasis on the physical environment such as signage and road design. Local planners are taking this into account when they create new developments or make improvements to the existing environment. O’Fallon-Shiloh can boast about health and supportive services. In the near future the region will be home to two hospitals. Access to quality healthcare is the most important priority for many older adults. A livable community for all generations has the capacity to address and prevent health problems. Supportive services are also critical to the health, independence and productivity of older adults. O’FallonShiloh offer a wide array of services that help people remain independent and families who are caring for older adults. With one call to the local Age Smart Community Resources, people access the many services available for older adults and caregivers. Opportunities for involvement and volunteer activities abound in O’FallonShiloh. A variety of senior groups are available. Southwestern Illinois College – Programs and Services for Older Persons offer regular activities at the Senior Center in Shiloh as well as opportunities to volunteer with their Retired Senior Volunteer Program. The local fitness clubs and centers offer a variety of classes geared just for older adults. With the local parks, great biking paths and opportunities to volunteer the health and well-being of older residents are well supported. O’Fallon-Shiloh have created livable communities for all ages and are great places to plan to age in place.
