Mayor’s Welcome Dear Reader: Greetings to you from the Township of Old Bridge, voted one of the safest cities to raise a family. Old Bridge is located centrally between the city and the shore, and is one of the most sought after places to live, work and raise a family, giving our residents the opportunity to go to a Broadway show or to spend a day at the races or at the beach. Something for everyone to enjoy! Our Township offers many diverse programs for all of our residents, no matter what the age. For our younger families who work, the Before and After Care program provides our children a safe and supervised environment prior and after school. We also offer Little League Baseball, Football, Soccer, Hockey and Lacrosse Leagues here in town for all of our youth. In case you aren’t aware, our Township offers our Camp Robin Program which provides Therapeutic Recreation for our disabled citizens for both our special youths and adults. Some of the activities which are offered for participants ages three-adult involve many sports programs ice skating, swimming, and basketball to mention a few. Arts & crafts and exercise programs, as well as a Summer Robin day camp program for children ages seven through twenty-one. It is an absolutely spectacular program!

Our Senior Center, accredited by the National Institute of Senior Centers, provides a multitude of programs and activities for our senior community. They are provided with exercise activities, as well as educational seminars on health and wellness. The exercise program is a fantastic offering “Move to the Groove”, Aerobic Chair Dancing and Yoga, to name a few, all of which really keep our seniors on their toes, happy and active, which I have seen for myself and really enjoy! There is also an arts and crafts program offering painting and sketching classes, as well as needle point which really displays our seniors’ artistic abilities. We had a very beautiful art show here and the seniors who were involved were just beaming with pride! Old Bridge is a dynamic place to do business. Our Business Alliance has provided a venue for the numerous businesses in town to network and I am extremely happy to report to you that Steve Mamakas, Director of Economic Development and myself received the NJ Biz.com Award for the creation of the Old Bridge Business Alliance. It has been very successful and created a welcoming environment for many businesses and we look forward to many more coming to our town. We have also partnered with UBER to provide the “SAFE RIDE ” program which offers free rides every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9pm to 2am from participating locations to the resident’s home within the Township of Old Bridge if the need arises. History ith the progress and population of current day Old Bridge Township, it can be difficult to see beyond the highways and buildings to another time, when farms and villages covered the landscape. Looking further back, forest growth dominated the land, broken only by Indian settlements, trails and fields cleared for planting. The Lenni-Lenape people were the first inhabitants of the area who survived for centuries on all that nature provided. In the summer they would meet on the shores of Raritan Bay with other clans and families from north and south to trade, fish and visit. Centuries later others would adopt this tradition and call it Salt Water Day. Europeans began settling the area in the 17th century, with New Jersey itself frequently changing hands between the Dutch and British. In the late 1600s it was under British rule and it was at that time Middlesex County was created. Thomas Warne, one of the original Proprietors under the Crown, came to New Jersey and settled in the vicinity of a grove of cedars along the road now called 516. Today a museum bearing his name stands on his original lot.
New Jersey, being divided into East Jersey and West Jersey in Colonial times, was further divided into counties and townships. Within Middlesex County, the Township of South Amboy covered an area along Raritan Bay until 1869, when a portion separated. It became Madison Township, named in honor of President James Madison, who had often traveled to the area. He came to visit Philip Freneau, a friend from his years at Princeton. Accounts claim these visits were prompted by Madison’s courtship of Freneau’s sister Mary, though his marriage proposals were not successful. Madison Township proved to be a thriving rural community, with agriculture and clay mining among the principle industries. Access to Raritan Bay provided a means to transport produce, lumber and other goods to various ports by steamboat, as well as importing items to the area. Roads that were once Indian trails became thoroughfares for wagons and foot traffic, connecting villages such as Brownville (later Browntown) and Jacksonville, as well providing a link to rest of Middlesex and Monmouth Counties. With the introduction of the railroad mid century, commerce and population increased. Among the fields and orchards, villages, mills and clay pits there could be found churches, cemeteries and schools as well as hotels and taverns — all evidence of a growing social community. In the first quarter of the 20th century, the portion of the township known as Laurence Harbor became a popular summer destination. Lots were sold for bungalows and a resort area sprang up with restaurants and a country club, as well as amusements and beaches for bathing. This served to attract even more people to the area. In 1964, a group of dedicated township residents formed the Madison Township Historical Society in order to preserve this history. Within a few years, the group obtained the Cedar Grove Schoolhouse, a 19th century one-room structure, to operate as a museum. It stands across from Old Bridge High School on Thomas Warne’s original property, not far from homes that were built by Warne descendants. In 1975, the name of the township was changed from Madison to Old Bridge, and continues to grow in the 21st century. From a population of less

than 2,000 in 1880, Old Bridge Township can now claim over 70,000 residents, and is recognized as the third largest municipality in Middlesex County. It was a contender for Money magazine’s title of one of the best places to live in the United States in 2005 and 2007. In 2016, SafeWise named Old Bridge Township as the sixth-safest city in America to raise a child. Beyond the obvious signs of progress there is still evidence of the past. Victorian houses, old farm buildings and place names like Browntown call it to mind, along with street names like Cottrell, Ticetown and Lambertson that speak of early families. Like many New Jersey towns, the centuries from Indian trails to a Nike base and the cellphone towers of the 21st century, give us a rich history and much to be discovered. w

Our Town ith our exceptional schools, growing recreational opportunities, access to top-notch health care and a positive business environment, Old Bridge Township has established itself as an ideal place for families, professionals and retirees. That is why so many families call Old Bridge home, and many others are sure to do the same with the area’s forthcoming residential and commercial development. No matter what the season there is always something fun and exciting to do in Old Bridge Township. It is the proud home to many sporting associations. In total there are 16 divisions of baseball and softball from Little League to teams ranging in age of 70-plus. The youth basketball association and soccer leagues both offer recreational and travel programs. Old Bridge has three youth recreational football teams along with competitive and noncompetitive cheerleading. A youth ice hockey program is offered at the ice arena. Cooking class, crafts, painting, yoga and a variety of fitness classes such as tennis with lessons and tournaments are held at the municipal tennis courts. Lacrosse is played on the newly renovated fields of Geick Park. The township offers a dance program for ages 3-12 that concludes with a dance recital in May. Online reregistration for classes are as follows: FALL/September, SPRING/February and SUMMER/May. Camp ROBIN offers a year-round community therapeutic recreation program for disabled children and adults from age 3 and up. The Old Bridge Department of Parks and Recreation and Social Service is committed to the development of skill, increased self-confidence and esteem through mastery in sport so in time these participants are included in mainstream general recreation programs with their non-disabled peers. Therapeutic Ice Program is a wonderful example of the success of the program due to the growing number of competitors in the New Jersey Special Olympics. The adult program provides opportunities to participate in some of the township’s most popular recreation programs including fitness and yoga, cooking, crafts and computer classes. The Old Bridge Senior Center, located in the George Bush Center for Human Services, just
celebrated its 20th anniversary. The senior center offers Old Bridge residents age 60 and up countless daily activities, field trips, seminars and parties throughout the year. In addition to all the fun, the center provides a variety of social services and enrollment assistance. Residents are eligible for transportation around the township, to and from the senior center, supermarkets and to medical facilities located in Old Bridge. Old Bridge. Every September, Old Bridge Day is held at the township complex which is a gathering of community, businesses and organizations in celebration of our town. As the leaves begin to change color, fall is a fun time of year with many wonderful yearly activities scheduled. WORLDFEST is a celebration of the diversity of our community. Entertainment, food, clothing, crafts, carnival rides and games are presented by the Old Bridge Cultural Arts
Operation Beachhead is an organization that provides recreational activities to disabled veterans, active duty military personnel and their respective families and children with special needs. Through their efforts, Operation Beachhead has grown from hosting two events to 10 events, providing recreational opportunities to over 200 veterans and their families this year. The Old Bridge Library hosts many events and activities. Authors, Comic Con, concerts and a variety of workshops fill its calendar of events. They offer live tutors online for all students from K-12th grade, available seven days a week. For more information, visit www.oldbridgelibrary.org. Many of the residents of Old Bridge can be found volunteering their time with organizations within the community, such as the animal shelter, food bank, senior center, Citizens Emergency Response Team and the township’s recycling program that sponsors the mayor’s Clean Team, which offers schools and local nonprofit organizations an opportunity to receive grant money for picking up litter and keeping the community clean. Many wonderful events go on throughout the year. The annual Memorial Day Parade and Salt Water Day on the Lawrence Harbor Beachfront featuring a variety of games, rides, local vendors, live music and fireworks. There are several different vintage and classic automobile shows held throughout
Committee in partnership with the Old Bridge Public School District. The Townships Halloween Spooktakular featuring pumpkin painting, games, craft and hayrides. Every year, the High School Choral group leads the community through the Tree and Menorah Lighting celebration. Location & Transportation ld Bridge is situated between two major New Jersey regions: the Shore Region, which features 127 miles of flawless beaches, providing ample opportunities for water-based recreation, and the Gateway Region, known to be a true tourism and cultural hot spot. The Township hosts two Park and Ride locations at Route 9 North and Westminster Boulevard and at Route 9 North and Inverness Drive. There are five other commuter parking lots throughout Old Bridge, many are free or charge a minimal fee for a day. NJ Transit provides daily train services with

he Old Bridge Township Department of Parks and Recreation is dedicated to keeping open space recreation opportunities for our township residents. The township has obtained more than 1,500 acres of recreation space over the past 30 years. With the assistance of more than $12 million dollars of New Jersey Green and Blue Acres acquisition and development grants we have been able to develop over 300 acres of that into playgrounds, sports fields and recreation space. Old Bridge currently has one of the largest inventories of municipal open space in the state of New Jersey. In those more than 300 acres of open space, there are many prominent features to making our parks so great. For all-around family fun, visit Mannino Park, home to the Old Bridge YMCA, a two-stage dog park set up for both large dogs and a separate area for smaller dogs, a large playground and a baseball and softball field. If running or biking is more up to your speed, visit the Laurence Harbor Beach front where the 3-mile
running/biking path sits parallel to the Raritan Bay. Sports-driven residents will enjoy Veteran’s Park with two softball fields, one little league sized baseball field, two basketball courts, two tennis courts, all equipped with lighting, and a soccer field. Geick Park boasts a picnic pavilion where residents can enjoy their lunch while their children are playing or rent it for family parties. Geick also has many recreational opportunities, such as a turf baseball field, two turf soccer fields, one softball field, one sand volleyball court and two sports court basketball courts, all equipped with lighting. In addition it has a large ADA playground and a smaller playground at the lower entrance. The John Piccolo Ice Arena, located in the municipal complex, hosts public ice skating sessions from October through April and is home to the Jr. Knights Youth Hockey League and many levels of ice skating classes. The ice arena is an amazing place for winter fun. The municipal complex is also home to eight lighted regulation tennis courts.
Pension Road is home to the Old Bridge Cricket Association. Pocket parks located throughout neighborhoods in many locations throughout the township are equipped with a playground or basketball courts. The parks department also offers many types of classes from Mommy and me to art, dance, tennis and more throughout the year. It also provide three summer camps, at 15 sites for children aged 5-21. The Camp ROBIN program is held at Geick Park and is specifically geared toward individuals with special needs. This camp assists approximately 100 participants from ages 7-21 during July and August. There are daily trips, activities and a summer full of fun. The half-day playground camp is run out of 10 camp sites throughout the town to accommodate residents and up to 1,000 campers at all ends of this very large town. This camp runs for the month of July on a half-day schedule and features crafts, games, outdoor activities and optional trips. The full-day summer recess camp, run by the parks and recreation department’s Before/

Aftercare program, lasts the full eight weeks of the summer for 10-and-a-half hours a day. Located at three central sites in town, the full-day camp accommodates 500 campers on any given day. With daily trips, in-house events and extended hours, it is the perfect spot for children to enjoy summer with their friends. In addition to these activities, The Old Bridge Before/Aftercare program is a nonprofit program sponsored by Old Bridge Township that has been providing affordable childcare for over 20 years
to township residents. The program is supported by parent tuition fees only. These programs are based out of the 12 elementary school and two middle schools in the township. These services are used by over 500 families on a monthly basis. Activities include homework time (45 minutes to do homework in a quiet environment), organized games, special arts and crafts projects and movies. For active adult community, the George Bush Senior Center is the place to be. The center provides information, referrals and senior
social services; creating a caring and nurturing environment, encouraging interests, creativity and artistic expression. The center offers a support system for seniors to lead active and independent lives, allowing them to make connections within the community and promotes the celebration of life through physical and mental well-being. The senior center operates a routed transportation service for seniors ages 60 years and older, providing programs on health and wellness, educational topics, socialization, passive and active recreation, music, dance and choral programs. Township Government he Township of Old Bridge operates under a strong mayor/council form of government. The mayor is directly elected by the voters to serve a four-year term. The nine members of the township council are elected by the voters to serve staggered four-year terms. Of the nine members, six represent specific wards and three are designated “at-large” members. The township council generally meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Municipal Complex. The public
is invited to participate in the council meetings, which are also broadcast live on the local cable station Channel 15 (Old Bridge Television). A number of municipal departments offer residents and businesses a full array of public services, including code enforcement, community development (engineering, planning and zoning), economic development, health and senior services, parks and facilities, recreation programs, public safety (police protection and emergency management) and public works (roads, recycling and snow removal).
In addition to the municipal departments, there are a number of volunteer boards, committees, and commissions that address a variety of issues, including cultural arts, planning and zoning, historic preservation, recreation, environmental and many others. Old Bridge Township Municipal Alliance FOR THE PREVENTION OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE he Old Bridge Township Municipal Alliance for the Prevention of Substance Abuse is a volunteer committee, grant-funded by the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, and supported by Old Bridge Township, to provide drug and alcohol prevention programming to students and residents. The programs are offered in the community to help eradicate drug abuse. Volunteers on the committee meet monthly, (and work behind the scenes throughout the year), to brainstorm ideas, plan events, evaluate and implement this programming, providing the best to the community.

Drug resource directories are disseminated, that are supplied by Middlesex County’s Division of Addiction, so the community can band together and help their neighbors. The last forum, “Hidden in Plain Sight,” was presented by a retired drug enforcement officer to outline what may be hidden in a child’s bedroom, to help aid the parents in prevention.
Mayor Henry has initialized a mayor’s town forum biannually, with the support of town council, Municipal Alliance, schools, police and PTA, focused on the epidemic of prescription drug abuse. Experts in the field and medical community educate township residents – parents, PTA representatives, dentists, doctors and school
The alliance’s new digital billboard outreach on Route 9 showcases its 24-hour medicine drop box in the town hall building. The billboard also references “The Good Samaritan Law” to inform resident to call 911 if they witness an overdose, with the caller retaining immunity. The Old Bridge Municipal Alliance’s main focus has always been on at-risk youth and primary prevention, and it sponsors and co-sponsors many programs in conjunction with local schools and the police department. The Two Good for Drugs Program, co-sponsored and taught by the police department, has always been a strong fifth-grade
educational tool for students in drug and alcohol education. Another solid elementary drug prevention program is the “Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs” fourthgrade slogan/art contest in which student winners attend a free fishing day with a trained fisherman, on a Saturday in June at Molder’s Fishing Preserve or Cheesequake State Park. The program is solely supported by the school, township, businesses and organizations, and receives yearly donations. It is in its sixth year, thanks to the tireless efforts of the volunteer fishermen who help students gain a valuable resiliency skill that will aid them throughout their lives. The Old Bridge Elks lodge has provided free fishing poles yearly to student winners. Old Bridge seniors, along with the staff at the township senior center, have helped hundreds of teens through the years with sound advice, through the alliance’s Intergenerational Program offered to high school psychology classes, focusing on healthy aging. Psychology students visit the Old Bridge Senior Center seven times a year to learn hands-on from older adults. A favorite is the Speed Meet and Greet, along with holiday caroling with the mayor and superintendent of schools. The alliance educates both groups on the dangers of prescription drug abuse and medication management with the help of Wellspring Center for Prevention. The collaboration and support from all entities of Old Bridge Township has made the Old Bridge Municipal Alliance volunteer committee grow yearly with people who care to help and want to be involved in this mission to end drug abuse and support recovery. w

Old Bridge Public Works Department he Old Bridge Public Works Department works year-round to enhance the quality of life for all township residents, businesses and visitors. The dedicated staff of this department are responsible for a proactive approach to keeping Old Bridge safe, clean and running efficiently even in the event of an emergency, from plowing snow to removing brush, to fixing
potholes and restoring the infrastructure. The department also offer a full-service recycling center open six days a week for all township residents. Recycling he Old Bridge Recycling Center offers free recycling services to township residents. Items can be dropped off from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday at the center, located on Route 516, behind the Old Bridge Animal Shelter. ‰ Metal recycling: The township accepts all metal items, such as lawn mowers, bicycles, lamps and workout equipment. Only the metal portion of these items are accepted. Please remove any plastic or fabric before dropping it off. ‰ Motor oil: Each resident is allowed to bring up to 5 gallons of motor oil. ‰ Carpeting: Residents can bring household carpeting to the recycling center. Only the carpeting is accepted, not the padding underneath. ‰ Mattresses/box springs: Residents can drop off a mattress or box spring six days per week. ‰ Concrete, brick and block: The township accepts all concrete, bricks or cinder blocks. ‰ Curbside recycling: Anything that is picked up curbside (bottles, cans, paper or cardboard) can also be brought to the recycling center. ‰ Middlesex County recycling programs: Check the Township website, www. middlesexcountynj.gov, or call the recycling office for dates and details on all Middlesex County sponsored events: ‰ Paint: The township accepts paint on the second Saturday of each month, all year long. Drop-off hours are between 7 a.m. and noon at the recycling center. ‰ Tire recycling: Available to all Middlesex County residents at five various locations throughout the county.
‰ Paper shredding: The township hosts the first paper shred event of the year every March. Limit is five boxes or 100 lbs. per resident. Residents are also allowed to go to any town in Middlesex County that is sponsoring a paper shred. ‰ Household hazardous waste: There are five events per
year for Middlesex County residents. The township hosts one event every July.
‰ Residential cooking oil: Township residents are welcome to drop off cooking oil at the recycling center, six days per week.
Township by-appointment-only services: Please email/call the recycling office to make an appointment for the following: ‰ Brush: The township picks up branches and brush bi-weekly throughout spring, summer and fall. Each bundle cannot exceed 40 lbs., be over 4 feet long or be more than 5 inches in diameter. The bundles must be tied up. Bundles that are not tied will not be picked up. Any small twigs and sticks can be thrown in a bucket/pail and placed at the curb along with the bundles.
Township seasonal services: The following services are available seasonally by the township: ‰ Leaf pickup: Leaves are picked up only in the spring and fall. Schedules are available online or in the recycling office. Residents can purchase paper leaf bags at any local home store (Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Shoprite, etc.). The township picks up according to ward; residents should confirm which ward they live in and follow the appropriate schedule. ‰ Christmas tree recycling: Trees are picked up approximately four times every January by ward. Check the township website for the schedule.
Useful information The Recycling office is located in the public works building at the Township Municipal Complex. Office hours are 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Recycling bins are available for purchase at the recycling office.
‰ White goods/appliances: Appliances are picked up by the township bi-weekly, all year long.
New residents who bring in their house closing papers or deed within one year of closing will get two free recycling bins with the purchase of the home.
‰ TVs and computer electronics: Residents can drop off any size/type of TV or computer (printer, monitor, scanner, etc.) six days per week. Residents who will need assistance at the recycling center must call to schedule an appointment.

Mayor Henry’s Clean Team he Old Bridge Clean Communities Program, called Mayor Henry’s Clean Team, works closely with the municipal government, schools, neighborhood committees and other local groups to keep Old Bridge clean through public education and litter removal projects. Annual activities

Old Bridge Animal Shelter
he Old Bridge Animal Shelter, located in the Old Bridge Municipal Complex, One Old Bridge Plaza (off Route 516) has many cats and dogs in need of a loving home. Rather than purchasing from a pet store, residents are encouraged to adopt a shelter pet. The shelter is open from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. seven days a week. To view many of the
animals up for adoption, visit the shelter page on the Old Bridge Township website (OldBridge.com) for links to Petfinders, Facebook and the featured pets of the month. Residents should check back frequently, as the shelter is constantly getting in additional dogs and cats. Donations of cat, kitten and dog food; dog and cat treats;cat litter; cotton towels; and paper towels are
always needed and welcomed. For a list of items needed by the shelter, visit the website. The shelter is always in need of volunteers and fosters to assist with the animals in its care. And, in case you miss our live or scheduled broadcast, all programming can be viewed on its YouTube channel under Old Bridge Township. The channel also distributes information via its Community Bulletin Board, a digital slide show airing on OBTV that showcases important
township information – such as meeting times and locations – but is also a great way to learn about events and fundraisers happening in the community. Boy Scouts oin the over 8,000 scouts in our council and see how scouting will make a difference in your child’s life. Scouting provides youth with an opportunity to try new things, provide service to others, build self-confidence and reinforce ethical standards. These opportunities not only help them when they are young, but also carry forward into their adult lives, improving their relationships, their work lives, their family lives and the values by which they live. A 2005 study by Harris Interactive found that 83 percent of men who were scouts in their youth agree that the values they learned in scouting continue to be very important to them today. Eighty-seven percent of men who remained in scouting five or more years attribute some of their self-confidence in their work to their scouting experience. Half of the group say scouting had a positive effect on their career development and advancement, and 83 percent say there have been real-life situations where having been a Scout helped them be a better leader. As youth, scouts are taught to live by a code of conduct exemplified in the 12 points of the Scout Law, and they continue to live by these laws in adulthood.
‰ Trustworthy: The majority of Scouts agreed that Scouting has taught them always to be honest (75 percent) and to be a leader (76 percent). ‰ Loyal: Eighty-eight percent of scouts are proud to live in the United States, and 83 percent say spending time with family is important to them. ‰ Helpful: Eight out of 10 scouts surveyed believed that helping others should come before their own self-interest. ‰ Friendly: Eighty percent of scouts say that scouting has taught them to treat others with respect and (78 percent) to get along with others. ‰ Courteous: Almost nine of 10 scouts (87 percent) believe older people should be treated with respect. ‰ Kind: Most scouts agree (78 percent) Scouting has taught them to care for other people, while 43 percent say their skills in helping other people in need are “excellent.” ‰ Obedient: Boys in scouting five years or more are more likely than boys who have never been in scouts to reject peer pressure to hang out with youth they know commit delinquent acts (61 percent vs. 53 precent).
Girl Scouts By Virginia LoMonaco and Karen Bennett irl Scouts began over 100 years ago with one woman, our founder Juliette Gordon Low. In 1912, she gathered 18 girls in her hometown of Savannah, Georgia, to share what she had learned about a new outdoor and educational program for youth, with this, the Girl Scout Movement was born. This first Girl Scout troop was formed on March 12, 1912, and today has become an organization that serves millions of girl members and alumnae. Known as “Daisy” by her family and close friends, Low is credited with establishing and nurturing a global movement that has changed the world. Today, we continue the Girl Scout mission of “building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.” Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to do something amazing. Girls will learn the Girl Scout Promise and the Girl Scout Law. Girl Scout badges are a great way for a girl to explore her interests and learn new skills. And there are so much more that girls can experience – going on exciting trips, exploring the outdoors and doing community service projects. And we have cookies! There are six levels: Daisy (grades K-1), Brownie (grades 2-3), Junior (grades 4-5), Cadette (grades 6-8), Seniors (grades 9-10) and Ambassador (grades 11-12) Scouts. Whether she wants to be part of a troop, sign up for exciting series or events, explore the outdoors or travel the world, each age level has something for her. Cookies, badges, campfires, friendship bracelets and ceremonies are just some of the adventures that help girls share in our Girl Scout history and traditions and help discover their strengths, passions and talents. Girls also have an opportunity to earn awards – Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards are the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn. These three awards give you a chance to do big things and work with other Girl Scouts to make a difference. Earning these awards show that you are a leader and dedicated to improving your community. Each award is earned at different scouting levels and can be done in a troop setting or as an individual scout.
‰ Cheerful: Overall, Scouts are happy with their schools (78 percent) and their neighborhoods (79 percent). However, because scouting builds such high ideals in youth, scouts are less satisfied than non-scouts with the state of the world today (47 percent vs. 52 percent). ‰ Thrifty: More than eight out of 10 scouts (82 percent) say that saving money for the future is a priority. ‰ Brave: Eighty percent of scouts say scouting has taught them to have confidence in themselves, and 51 percent rate their self-confidence as “excellent.” ‰ Clean: Nearly the same number of scouts (79 percent) agree that scouting has taught them to take better care of the environment and that scouting has increased their interest in physical fitness. ‰ Reverent: Scouting experience also influences religious service attendance. Eighty-three percent of men who were scouts five or more years say attending religious services together as a family is “very important,” versus 77 percent of men who had never been scouts. ld Bridge Township is one of the larger towns in Middlesex County with a land area of over 38 square miles and a population of over 65,000 people. Due to the size and population of our town, Old Bridge is divided into six geographical voting areas known as wards and also into nine postal zones for mail delivery. The following information should help with the confusion some of our residents experience with where they live and vote and how their mail is delivered and by whom. The map above shows the different areas for both wards and postal zones. The Old Bridge Township Council has nine members elected by the people to represent them. Three of the council members are elected at-large, which means members of a governing body who are elected or appointed to represent the whole town rather than an individual ward, or section, of the town. Each of the other six council members is elected as a ward representative by the people living in that specific ward. Contact the Office of the Municipal Clerk for the name of your individual council representative and their contact information. They will also provide information on election polling places for each ward. Because of the large geographic area and layout of the town, our residents’ mail may be delivered by one of nine post offices in the area. Some of these post offices are not only in surrounding towns, but they may also be in an adjoining county as well. A large number of Old Bridge properties have mailing addresses with zip codes of Monmouth County post offices such as Cliffwood or Cliffwood Beach, Englishtown, Keyport, Matawan and Morganville. Properties may well also be situated in ZIP code areas of neighboring Middlesex County postal zones like Jamesburg, Sayreville, Parlin or South Amboy. The map above shows the different parts of town serviced by these different post offices.

Old Bridge Public Library onsistently voted the best, or one of the best, libraries in Middlesex County, the Old Bridge Public Library serves as a community center for residents. The library provides access to books, other materials and information through in-person and online access. It has transformed itself into a proactive center for learning, recreation and study 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
The library’s robust English as a Second Language literacy classes offered in the spring and fall help those new to the United States acclimate to American society. They can practice English through the online resource, Pronunciator. Other ESL resources include books and DVDs. The library is also an official, U.S. State Department-designated passport acceptance
Over 300,000 people per year visit the library, with thousands more using its online resources remotely. The library offers access to tens of thousands of items from books, e-books and DVDs to pre-loaded learning tablets, mobile hot spots, free museum passes and digital magazines. Over 26,000 people per year attend the hundreds of programs and events the library sponsors, which appeal to everyone from toddlers to teens to seniors.

The library provides the community with computer access, onsite and remote printing, mobile hot spot loans, computer classes and individualized technology assistance. Its services play a key role in closing the digital divide with free Wi-Fi, and in-person and online live homework help. Access to online learning courses is available for life-long learning. Our flagship resources include Tutor.com, Universal Class and Lynda.com. The Outreach Van provides early literacy opportunities to preschool children, as well as reading materials to senior facilities, OBPS and other venues. The Outreach Van also stocks the Little Free Libraries the library has set up at the Inverness and Westminster commuter parking lots and the library’s branch in the Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge. The library’s Books By Mail Program offers books to qualified residents not able to visit in person. In addition to the thousands of books, audio books, magazines, DVDs and TV series in its collections, patrons can download and stream films, songs, comic books, e-books and audio books through library services such as Hoopla, Kanopy, Zinio, eLibraryNJ and Tumble Book Library. Language learning, including English, is a snap with online services such as Muzzy Online, Rosetta Stone and Pronunciator. The library has a large collection of foreign language books and discs to help patrons learn and practice another language, including English.

The library’s Idea Farm, one of the first “makerspaces” in New Jersey, serves the community as a multi-faceted enterprise enabling the making, learning, exploring and sharing of high-tech and low-tech tools. Idea Farm workshop includes a Makerbot 3-D printer, a Roland vinyl cutter, soldering irons, Makey Makey kits, Arduino microcontrollers and many other components for use by people of all ages and interests. The Idea Farm includes a gardening component where members of the community can learn gardening and composting skills. Sewing classes are also part of the Idea Farm, and hundreds of people in the community have taken these classes from beginners to advanced sewers. The library is helping to prepare the community to acquire

Education ld Bridge Township Public Schools is a 42-square-mile suburban school district located at the southern end of Middlesex County, in central New Jersey. The district has a total daytime student enrollment of just over 9,000 pupils, and students are housed in a pre-kindergarten annex, 12 elementary schools grades K-5, two middle schools grades 6-8 and a single campus high school with a separate facility for ninth graders. The population, exceeding 3,000 students, makes it the third largest high school in the state.
climate and advancements in student performance. Old Bridge School District has received the honor of being placed on College Board AP Honor Roll. Only a total of 547 school districts across the U.S. and Canada are being honored by the College Board for simultaneously increasing access to Advanced Placement coursework, while maintaining, or increasing, the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP exams. A mere 34 districts, out of 296 in New Jersey, have met the criteria to be placed on the AP Honor Roll this academic year. Old Bridge is one of the few districts to not only meet the rigor for recognition, but to also meet the criteria multiple years.
The positive climate change in Old Bridge directly influenced student success through individual, intrinsic motivation, as well as the growth and professional development of the Old Bridge staff. There has been an increase in collaboration amongst staff, across grade levels, departments, buildings and district wide. This team approach has increased their expertise and spread this knowledge exponentially, reaching more students, therefore providing greater opportunity for success on all levels.
Old Bridge High School has witnessed measurable results on the SAT. Recently, New Jersey high schools taking the SAT gained on average 1 point, and national high schools decreased by 3 points. However, scores in Old Bridge increased by an average of 85 points. The high school currently ranks 88 points above the national average, and 45 points above the state average on the SAT. Continuing with academic recognition, select Old Bridge elementary schools have recently been nominated to apply for the National Blue Ribbon Excellence Award and in 2017 Cheesequake Elementary School was the first school in Old Bridge to earn this status. Several others have also performed in the top 20 of all New Jersey Elementary Schools on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. Additionally, the township public schools have made an impression with the National Title I Association, which has been selecting examples of superior Title I school programs for national recognition, through the National Title I Distinguished Schools program, since 1996. It is not a surprise considering all the wonderful initiatives the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development has put in place to assist the local businesses to prosper. For every new business that opens, there seems to be an equal amount of businesses that have been reaching milestone anniversaries. It is the support and loyalty of the community that can be thanked for these success stories and for the steady economic growth in Old Bridge.

Launched in 2016 at the Old Bridge Business Alliance Leadership Forum was the Think Old Bridge Property Tax Reward Program and the Uber Safe Ride Program. The Think Old Bridge Property Tax Reward Program strengthens the local economy by offering residents and non-residents incentives to shop locally at participating businesses. As you shop, a percentage of your bill is deposited into your personal Think Old Bridge account. It accumulates throughout the year and then is automatically credited on your third quarter property taxes.
This dedication to and appreciation for the Old Bridge community inspired one of the newest business ventures in town, All Around Old Bridge, the hyperlocal news publication that debuted in October 2016.
For those who rent or work in the town, a rebate check is mailed to them directly. Twenty thousand Think Old Bridge Property Tax Reward card were sponsored by Excel Urgent Care, ACE Pharmacy and AMBOY Bank, making it possible to distribute them free of charge to residents. If you don’t have your card already, stop by The Mayor’s Office of Economic Development, Old Bridge Library or any of the participating businesses that display the Think Old Bridge logo to pick up a card.
Founded by David Hernandez , owner of Old Bridge Funeral Home on Route 516, this monthly publication has been steadily increasing in size. Each edition is filled cover-to-cover with highlights, photos, interesting facts and stories about the people, school district, organizations and businesses that make up Old Bridge. Main Street Theatre Company stablished in 1994, The Main Street Theatre Company is an award-winning community theater that performed at the Sayreville Senior Center, and then the Step Inn Ballroom. In 2005, the company found a new home in the auditorium of Garden Friends Day School on Bordentown Avenue in Old Bridge. The Main Street Theatre Company strives to provide cultural enhancement for its patrons, participants, and community through the production of high quality theatrical entertainment. Throughout the year, the company produces full-staged Broadway plays and musicals complete with professional sets, costumes, lighting and sound. This year’s season included “Proof,” “Guys and Dolls” and its first dance show, “Just Dance.” In May, the play “Musical Comedy Murders of 1940” opens. In the summer, the company produces its
junior show, “Once Upon a Mattress,” performed by children ages 5 through 13, and then the youth show “Gypsy” performed by actors ages 13 through 23. These two popular programs are a great way for children and young adults to learn about the performing arts. In October, the company will produce “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” The season will conclude with “A Christmas Carol: The Musical” in December. Additionally, the Kidworks season provides entertainment for younger audiences. “Superheroes, Unite!” will open the end of May. The company offers opportunities for all ages and experiences to act on stage, build and paint a set, stage manage or volunteer to work the house. Area Attractions major attraction in Old Bridge Township is Cheesequake State Park, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2015. Uniquely located in the middle of the urban north and the suburban south, the park lies in a transitional zone between two different ecosystems. This 386acre park is made up of open fields, saltwater and freshwater marshes, a white cedar swamp, pine barons and a northeastern hardwood forest. This state park is a terrific example of vegetation change from a costal salt marsh habitat to upland forests, which can be observed from the various trails running through the park. The natural area displays a diversity of plant species and community characteristics of both north and south New Jersey. Visitors can take advantage of the five designated trails for hiking and mountain biking, 50-plus campsites, several picnic areas, water activities on the six-acre Hooks Creek Lake, as well as the Interpretive Center. The center features wildlife historical exhibits, information on Native Americans and early colonization in the area and even programs that cover the three different habitats discovered in Cheesequake State Park. Old Bridge Township is home to the state’s premier and most famous motor sports park, the Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. Stretching over 500 acres, the raceway hosts a variety of both motor sports and non-motor sport events during the season from late February through late November. The raceway hosts the NHRA Championship Drag Races, Family Fun Thrill Shows, AMA Motocross and many other action-packed events. This park is a preservation of a splendid rural 18th century landscape of fields, orchards, woods and wetlands encompassing miles of hiking and horseback riding trails, picnic areas, a restored Revolutionary War farmhouse and a Visitors Center. The center stands on top of Combos Hill, which was once commanded by the Continental Army Artillery. Inside is an interpretive display area, including artifacts recovered from the battlefield. The Gateway National Recreation Area, along the coast in Sandy Hook, straddles New York and New Jersey, and is composed of three units, including the popular Sandy Hook barrier peninsula in New Jersey. Just 40 miles from Old Bridge Township and accessible via NJ Route 36 South, this 1,665-acre destination features a seven-mile stretch of beach, a pristine holly forest and attractions such as Fort Hancock, the Sandy Hook Proving Ground and the Sandy Hook Lighthouse – America’s oldest operating lighthouse. A little further south is the Freehold Raceway. This great location is for those looking to place bets on live and simulcast standard-bred harness races. The raceway is recognized as the oldest and fastest daytime half-mile harness racing track in the U.S. Monmouth Raceway Park, located in nearby Oceanport, has been a shore tradition since 1870. Three buildings have carried the name Monmouth Park in the last 139 years. Due to the high caliber of its racing, Monmouth Park achieved distinction as the “Newmarket of America” – a reference to the famed racecourse in England. The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority purchased Monmouth Park in 1986 and many of the historic, century-old stakes races were reinstated, with the Monmouth Cup, inaugurated in 1884, renamed the Philip H. Iselin Handicap.
Between May and September, concert-goers can enjoy the sounds of various musicians and bands at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. Only 10 miles south of Old Bridge Township, the modern outdoor amphitheater consists of 7,000 seats and an encompassing grassy area that accommodates more than 10,000 guests. Other major attractions reachable from Old Bridge Township include Six Flags Great Adventure and Wild Safari in Jackson, the largest Six Flags in the country; the Meadowlands Sports Complex in Rutherford, which features the IZOD Center, hosting big-name performers year-round; the Meadowlands Racetrack; MetLife Stadium; Newark’s Prudential Center; and all the draws of downtown New York City, just 36 miles from Old Bridge. w
