If you are reading this, you may already know or have heard about how unique and distinctive Ontario is, but allow me to share some of our many attributes. Ontario’s history begins with the famous Oregon Trail of the 19th Century, the most heavily used route in the nation’s resettlement of western North America, and we still maintain a strong pioneering spirit. We are located at the juncture of the Snake and Malheur rivers alongside Interstate Highway 84 on the Idaho border, and are about halfway between Portland, Oregon, and Salt Lake City, Utah. Ontario is known as a tourist center because of the naturally rugged canyon terrain and the skiing,

hunting, river rafting, fishing, geocaching and rock hounding that accompanies it.

illed with a fascinating background, Ontario can easily please anyone who is enthusiastic about the past. Ontarioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history began with the Oregon Trail in the mid-19th century, when travelers passed through the area from the east as they searched for a better life. Many voyagers sought the region for its mild climate, aiming to claim their own land. In the 1840s, married settlers became eligible for free land, which was ideal for their families. In addition, Oregon was spared of several diseases common in the east during this time. Due to this advantage, Oregon was deemed perfect by travelers far and wide. As such, successful travelers would become part of the future success seen in Ontario. In 1883, the Oregon Short Line Railroad completed its tracks through the Ontario area. As a result, a depot and inn were developed; ultimately leading to increased settlement. Ontario became a cattle town, with the railroad as a central component of its main industry. This still holds true to this very day, as the city is home to multiple businesses deeply rooted in agriculture. Situated on the northeastern tip of Malheur County, Ontario is the countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest city. Recent improvements, such as man-made reservoirs, have boosted the growth of business and industry in the area. w

ntario is located in eastern Oregon, near the state border between Idaho and Oregon. The largest city in Malheur County, Ontario has seen consistent growth due to its prime location. Ontario is conveniently located at the center of four major highways: Interstate 84, U.S. Highway 95, U.S. Highway 20-26 and U.S. Highway 201. Boise can be discovered by following Interstate 84 to the southeast for about an hour. Portland is a six-hour drive to the northwest along Interstate 84.

Vale is a close-knit community of 1,814 people. The city is within close proximity to Ontario as it is almost 17 miles away. The Bureau of Land Management is one of the largest employers in Vale, where government is a main focus in addition to agriculture.

Nyssa, Oregon www.nyssacity.org

The city of Nyssa houses 3,188 residents and is less than 15 miles away from Ontario, Oregon. Nyssa’s main employers are based around the city’s main industries of agriculture and farming. The crops produced in Nyssa include onions, sugar beets, potatoes, corn, and wheat.

Fruitland, Idaho

River from Ontario, Oregon. Fruitland’s name originates from the original town site, which heavily consisted of orchards. Woodgrain is a major employer in Fruitland while manufacturing is a strong economic driver for the city as a whole.

The city of Payette is home to 7,478 residents and is a distance of only six miles from Ontario, Oregon. Payette serves as the county seat for Payette County.

The Snake River Correctional Institution is a multi-custody prison in Ontario that houses approximately 3,000 male inmates. It opened in 1991 and is the largest correctional institution in the state of Oregon. The number one agricultural product in Malheur County is beef. Cattle ranches can be found throughout the area, many of which trace back to the 1800s. ONIONS

Agribusiness

Fertile land is the basis of all that lies within Malheur County. A mild climate and rich soil provide optimal means for flourishing farms and ranches. Because of this, the agricultural industry is undeniably the main structure for the local economy.

Onions are the second best agricultural product in the county. Migrant workers are largely responsible for the weeding and harvesting of more than five percent of the national onion market in Malheur County. Every August and September, observers can witness the annual onion curing while going for a drive on county roads.

As a staple in many restaurants and kitchens, potatoes serve as the groundwork for a number of recipes. In Malheur County, large russet potatoes are the third-largest cash crop. In addition to the top three industries, several other products are grown and produced within the county lines. These products include alfalfa hay, alfalfa seeds, carrots, milk, peppermint oil, sugar beets, wheat and grains. With the help of the Union Pacific Railroad and various trucking companies, these goods are transported out of Malheur County. w

The city manager serves as the chief executive officer, otherwise known as the local government’s head of the executive branch. The Ontario city council is voter-elected and composed of six councilors and one mayor, the latter of which serves as the head of the legislative branch. In the private sector, the council could be referred to as the “board of directors.” The mayor is similar to the “chairman of the board.” City council meetings are generally held at city hall, starting at 7 p.m., on the third Tuesday of each month. Fire Department

The Ontario Fire and Rescue Department consists of 41 personnel dedicated to protecting residents of the Treasure Valley. The department contains nine professional firefighters, 30 volunteer firefighters, a full-time fire chief and a full-time administrative assistant. he Four Rivers Cultural Center and Museum is the hub of Ontario’s cultural offerings. It celebrates the area’s early settlers and the convergence of the four local rivers: Snake, Malheur, Owyhee and Payette. An assortment of programs, exhibits, and events are presented throughout the year at the Four Rivers Cultural Center. Guests who tour the museum gain knowledge about the JapaneseAmericans, Basques, Hispanics, Europeans and Northern Paiute who established

themselves in the region throughout the past decade. In addition, the gift shop carries a wide arrangement of souvenirs and one-of-akind items. Housed alongside the Four Rivers Cultural Center is the Hikaru Mizu Garden; this Japanese garden is a memorial to the local Japanese-American interns during World War II and those who fought in the war for America. The garden promotes itself as a sanctuary of peace, encouraging visitors to

reflect on the past, contemplate the future and enjoy the present. The Meyer-McLean Performing Arts Theater seats 645 persons and displays entertainment productions such as musicals, concerts and symphonies. The Four Rivers Cultural Center also boasts an 18,000 square-foot conference center that can accommodate up to 700 people.
