Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce Business Expo & Community Showcase

hether you have lived in Palatine for a few months or for many years, mark your calendar for Saturday, Nov. 11, and plan to spend some of your day at the Falcon Park Recreation Center, 2195 N. Hicks Rd. The Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce will give you the opportunity that day to learn more about the businesses of Palatine and to enjoy free entertainment and demonstrations by local groups when the Chamber holds its second annual free Business Expo and Community Showcase from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We are excited to once again bring so many of our local businesses and associations together in one location to showcase and demonstrate everything our chamber members have to offer to the residents of Palatine,” said Chamber President Jan Wood. At the first event, held last year, 55 local businesses and associations participated, talking to residents about the services and products they offer and even giving out free samples. This year Executive Director Steve Gaus expects to accommodate approximately 70 local businesses. “We loved being able to give our local businesses a chance to meet and greet Palatine residents and to

ould you want to see potholes patched promptly in the streets you drive, prevent increases in your property taxes, have a variety of stores to shop at and jobs for local residents? Then get involved with the Palatine Chamber’s “Think Local” campaign, spearheaded by Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Steven Gaus and Chamber President Jan Wood. Our local Palatine area businesses employ your neighbors, and support your schools and local village government services. The sales tax and property taxes provided by these businesses also help keep the residential property taxes at the lowest levels possible. Twenty-three percent of Palatine’s general fund income is derived from sales taxes that residents and non-residents pay when they purchase items at businesses in the village. According to Mike Jacobs, Deputy Village Manager, Palatine raises $12.7 million of its $55.8 million annual budget from sales taxes on retail establishments, as well as on restaurants and bars. This fall the Palatine Chamber plans to launch a Think Local campaign called Come In – We’re Local. The purpose of the campaign is to make sure that Palatine residents understand that when they spend $100 in a local community store, $48 of those dollars stay in Palatine. When they shop at an in-town chain outlet, however, only $14 of those dollars stay in Palatine and when they buy from

give our talented local groups a chance to showcase their abilities – dancers, animal groups, singers, police canines, characters in costumes and much more,” Gaus added. “It was a great event that we look forward to being even better this year. Everyone left there feeling great and we are excited to build on that.” “So many residents told us that they were excited to see the hidden gems of Palatine which they didn’t know were here and we loved that,” Wood said. “Chamber members were also pleased.” Janet Leigh of LuLaRoe, a vendor at last year’s expo, commented that “the Palatine Chamber Business Expo and Community Showcase was absolutely wonderful. It provided me the opportunity to get my name out in the community and meet people face to face. I met so many wonderful people and gained many new customers. It was well worth it.” Because this year’s event will be held on Veteran’s Day, the Chamber plans on honoring veterans at the expo. In addition, there will be live demonstrations, giveaways, raffle baskets, a 50/50 cash raffle and a kids’ entertainment and activity area. The Palatine Park District is the event’s presenting sponsor.

Consequently, when residents purchase their groceries, diapers and other supplies from Amazon or another online retailer, they are shortchanging their local community. “We need to support each other if we want to end up with a thriving community,” Wood said. “We need to patronize our local hardware and grocery stores, nail salons, accountants, restaurants and pet groomers to ensure Palatine continues to thrive.” During the fourth quarter of 2017 the Palatine Chamber will launch their Come In – We’re Local campaign in order to create a culture of supporting Palatine’s business community and thus, the entire Palatine community. They plan to educate the public about the importance of shifting their thought process and buying from local storefronts and patronizing local services and institutions. “Even buying from big chain stores and franchisees within Palatine is better for the community than buying online,” Gaus said. “Our new Come In – We’re Local program will educate residents about who the local merchants are, what they do/sell and where they are located,” he added. “We want to let people know about our hidden gems who may not have the advertising budgets to let everyone continuously know where they are and what these businesses can do for them.”

Economic Development

ommunities need to constantly evolve in order to stay relevant and attractive to prospective residents. To prosper, they need to offer places for people to shop, be employed, entertain themselves, enjoy nature and recreational activities and educate themselves and their children. The leadership of Palatine understands this well and constantly works to stay relevant and to offer its residents and those of nearby communities a plethora of services and opportunities. Accordingly, a number of new businesses and facilities have opened or relocated within Palatine over the past year, said Mike Jacobs, Deputy Village Manager. For instance, the southeast corner of the intersection of Quentin Road and Northwest Highway now boasts a new barbeque restaurant Chicago Culinary Kitchen, which offers a restaurant, space for private events and a bustling catering business. At the corner of Dundee and Rand roads a three-building complex is expected to open before the end of 2017. One building will feature a drive-through Panera restaurant. Another will become home to an American Mattress store. The third building is available, Jacobs said. Slightly north of that new complex, on Northwest Highway, at the site that held Teddy’s Liquors for many years, an O’Reilly Auto Parts store will open soon. Further north, just east of Grossinger Hyundai on Lake-Cook Road, two commercial out-lots are being developed. It has been announced that a Starbucks will take one of those spots, but the other remains available for another venture that likely would appeal to prospective car shoppers and others passing by. Further south along Rand Road, just south of the Park Place Shopping Center, a long-shuttered gas station will be replaced with a free-standing Children’s Land Learning Center later in 2018. In addition, several businesses opened in the Deer Grove Crossing Shopping Center, located at Dundee and Rand roads. An Aldi grocery store opened in 2016 in the former Staples location at 761 E. Dundee Road in the Deer Grove Crossing Shopping Center and Hobby Lobby also relocated there, moving from the Palatine Plaza Shopping Center on Northwest Highway. Therefore, Jacobs noted, the village is currently searching for a replacement to take the space that Hobby Lobby vacated at Palatine Plaza. In downtown Palatine, Pan American Bank & Trust will soon occupy the old Smith Street Station space adjacent to Durty Nellie’s. The bank will modify the parking lot to add a single drive-through lane. Elsewhere in downtown, popular custom floral and home goods boutique, Harrington Manor, at 16 S. Bothwell Street, has expanded to a second nearby structure at 25 W. Palatine Road and now offers twice the custom goods to its loyal following. In addition, the Lake Zurich-based, premium soft-serve ice cream and

Hawaiian Shaved Ice My Flavor It! Place, has opened its third store at 117 W. Slade Street. Central Palatine has also earned a new Starbucks café over the past year. It was constructed across the street from Ahlgrim’s Funeral Home on Northwest Highway, on the site of a longtime lampshade store. At the southern end of the village, Harper College has been busy improving its facilities. It celebrated the reopening of one of its six original buildings – Building D – last August after a renovation transformed the 1969-era structure into a state-of-the-art learning environment. The 18-month, $44.8 million renovation was funded by capital referendum dollars approved by District 512 residents. The renovation added natural light to every classroom, modernized classrooms and improved acoustics. The renovated facility also features more collaborative study space, a lab for English as a Second Language and World Language and a lab for Harper’s American Sign Language and Interpreter Training programs. The centerpiece of the building is a two-story glass rotunda (known as the Beaubien Family Rotunda) that creates an inviting place for students to meet, study and learn. Dee Beaubien is a member of Harper College’s Educational Foundation Board. Then, this April, Harper held a groundbreaking to kick off the transformation of its Wellness and Sports Center (Building M) into a leading community health and recreation center. The $38 million renovation of the outdated, 38-year-old facility is the result of a partnership with the Palatine Park District and Northwest Community Healthcare. The new facility is expected to reopen for the fall 2018 semester. Under the partnerships, the park district will contribute $9 million toward the renovation, pay a share of the building’s operating costs, operate the indoor pool and provide adult fitness and recreation programs. Northwest Community Healthcare will lease 10,000 square feet of the space to provide health care services to students, staff and the community. Harper College President Dr. Ken Ender believes the Building M partnership will serve as a new model for local government. “At the end of the day, what we have created together is something we never could have done by ourselves,” he said. “We’re showing our educational community and the taxpayers what the future of public institutions looks like, not only in this district and state, but across the country.”

They are well known in Lake and Cook Counties as an installation company providing entry doors, windows, siding, gutters and downspouts on any style homes that could use a facelift. Lake Cook Exteriors was started by Bill and Karen Sheetz of Palatine. “Bill had always dreamed of having his own company and he was a natural-born salesman. Bill’s experience as an installer and his success at in-home remodeling sales eventually lead to the idea of establishing our own company,” Karen recalled. “Being involved in a family business was second nature to me since my parents opened a retail business in Arlington Heights when I was growing up. So I was more than willing to pursue our goal,” she added. The Sheetzes opened Lake Cook Exteriors in late 1987 and their current location is at 50 E. Palatine Rd. Today Bill serves as the firm’s president and Karen as its general manager. They have two other employees: their son, Nolan, and their salesman of 13 years, Don. Installations are handled by skilled contracted crews. In the early days, Lake Cook Exteriors focused on gutters and downspouts for homeowners and for custom homebuilders. Once the recession hit in 2008, however, things changed. “That was when we expanded our product lines for exterior work in demand by residents,” Karen said. “We install beautiful front doors, upgraded windows, gutters and downspouts and siding.
