Carolina Pikacho Fronteras de la Notiica - EFESalud La envidia es un sentimiento/emoción en el que existe un dolor psíquico de la persona que lo padece, al compararse con alguna persona cercana. Generalmente, pueden ser pertenencias aunque también se puede dar en relación a atributos personales. La psicología ha encontrado diferentes cuestiones dentro de la “psique” del envidioso. En primer lugar, destaca que se siente desdichado o apesadumbrado por la fortuna o el bienestar de sus personas próximas. No existe la capacidad de aceptar pequeñas diferencias con los demás. Se sabe que una gran desigualdad produce fascinación pero una pequeña diferencia en las personas que piensas como iguales a ti, produce envidia. Existiendo un sesgo cognitivo en el que se minusvalora los esfuerzos del envidiado por haber conseguido un mayor crecimiento. No obstante, en ese no tolerar la diferencia con el otro, puede ser que se envidie incluso el tener menos: menos beneficios, menos hijos… La diferencia entre celos y envidia, es clara. El

Neuqua Valley business team lands in national competition By Lauren Rohr For Reflejos The integration of technology and pet care is central to a business plan that has landed a team of Neuqua Valley High School student entrepreneurs in a national competition. From the general concept and marketing strategies to the finance and human resources departments, every element of the simulated company, Catalyst Care, has been developed over the course of the academic year by 27 Neuqua Valley seniors in a Virtual Enterprises International class. The project’s six student executives will pitch the business plan to judges this week in a contest involving the top 40 teams from across the country. “This really is a prestigious honor for them to make it to this point,” said Nick Chapman, president of Virtual Enterprises, which aims to offer authentic business experiences in high schools nationwide. “I think it starts with the culture they’ve created at Neuqua.” While brainstorming ideas at the beginning of the school year, the Catalyst Care students came to a consensus on two key points: They wanted their business concept to involve animals, and they wanted it to be reflective of the times, said Tyler Madsen, chief project manager.

STUDENTS OF a Virtual Enterprises International class at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville spent the academic year developing and operating a simulated company, Catalyst Care.
The students got to work launching a fake company that blends technology with pet health, as evidenced through their signature smart collar that offers GPS tracking, monitors health metrics and serves as a “Fitbit for your pet,” Chief Executive Officer Nadun Gajapala said. With help from other students in the class, he said, the six project leaders came together to develop an overarching business proposal and presentation that incorporated the product, marketing plans, financial models and structure of the company. “One of our huge, huge strengths is, within these chiefs, we have really great leadership in place,” Gajapala said. “We put in extra time and extra work after
school just to differentiate ourselves and make us stand out from the competition. We’re really, really proud.” The Catalyst Cares plan won first place in a Virtual Enterprises state contest in January, earning the team a spot in the National Business Plan Competition held virtually this month. The preliminary round begins today, after which the pool will be narrowed to 20 teams. The semifinals take place April 19 before the top eight teams compete in a championship round April 21. The class that created Catalyst Care is one of five Virtual Enterprises sections at Neuqua Valley, each of which runs its own fake company, business teacher Beth Schmidtgall said.
In addition to meeting deadlines and working through the normal issues that arise in a workplace environment, she said, the students had the added challenge this year of communicating and operating their business remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I think it made us strengthen our skills a lot, and that has helped us in the long run,” said Maggie Pelter, chief design officer for Catalyst Care. Providing students with relevant hands-on opportunities to prepare them for careers is the goal of Virtual Enterprises, Chapman said. The Catalyst Cares team leaders, in particular, have been able to prove their commitment to the simulated experience and their knowledge of business concepts, while effectively articulating their mission through their presentation, he said. “It’s less about what the idea is and more about how students are able to demonstrate what they’ve learned through this experience and how they’re pivoting and adapting to the market,” Chapman said. “In every great (Virtual Enterprises) program, it’s really about how much the students dive into the project and how much they own of it,” he said. “When you go to Neuqua, it’s very clear that these students are in charge and in control.”
Lou Malnati’s owners Abt Electronics expands exploring selling the chain recycling center DAILY HERALD REPORT The backers of Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria are exploring options including a sale of the Chicago-style, deep-dish pizza chain, Bloomberg reported people familiar with the matter saying. The company could be valued at as much as $700 million, including debt, in a sale, sourcs told Bloomberg. Shareholders, which include the Malnati family and BDT Capital Partners, are working with an adviser, the people said. The group could sell out completely, add a new shareholder or keep its existing structure, they said.
A representative for BDT Capital declined to comment. A representative for Lou Malnati’s didn’t respond to requests seeking comment. Founded by investment banker Byron Trott, BDT Capital is the merchant banking arm of BDT & Co. The firm first invested in the chain in 2016, taking a significant stake, Crain’s Chicago Business reported at the time. The chain has expanded its store footprint to more than 50 locations. The chain was founded in 1971 in the Lincolnwood by Lou Malnati and his wife, Jean.
GLENVIEW -- Abt Electronics has completed a major expansion of its recycling center and remains committed to recycling 95% of its own waste, the company said. Located on the southern portion of Abt’s property, the new recycling center is two-and-a-half times bigger than the previous one. It features equipment including a GreenMax machine that melts Styrofoam into raw materials reused for picture frames, home construction materials and more, as well as an Auger Compactor. Abt, the largest independently-owned, single-location retailer of electronics, appliances and home goods in the country, recycles card-
board, plastic, old products, wood pallets, and packing materials in which merchandise is shipped in. “This was a significant, but important investment for the company,” said Mike Abt, co-president of Abt Electronics. “We are committed to expanding our green program as the company continues to grow and our new, larger recycling center is a prime example of one of our core values …” Abt’s recycling efforts save 2.2 million pounds of cardboard and paper, over 350,000 pounds of Styrofoam, over 13 million pounds of appliances, and 1.4 million pounds of electronics from going to landfills, the company said.

Persiguiendo metas universitarias durante una pandemia La pandemia de COVID-19 ha generado estrés adicional para muchos estudiantes universitarios. Aquellos que también son padres o cuidadores se han visto obligados a tomar decisiones difíciles sobre cómo perseguir objetivos educativos bajo una presión cada vez mayor. Para estudiantes como Bryan Arredondo, de Elgin, eso significaba usar el dinero reservado para su matrícula universitaria para ayudar a cubrir el alquiler de su familia. Pursuing college goals during a pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought on added stress for many college students. Those who are also parents or caregivers have been forced to make tough decisions about pursuing educational goals under increasing strain. For students like Bryan Arredondo, of Elgin, that meant using money set aside for college tuition to help cover rent for his family. Arredondo attends Elgin Community College, majoring in computer-aided
design, and his mother was laid off from her job last April. Early last year as the financial effects of the pandemic became apparent, the college worked quickly to address the financial needs of students like Arredondo through several measures including the ECC Foundation’s Student Success Fund. The Foundation rallied its donors around the cause and raised over $100,000 to help students pay for tuition, books, technology access, and even ancillary support for rent, food, health care, and child care. Arredondo is one of more than 65 students who received help from the fund to continue their studies. He also secured an internship that led to a job as a part-time design and project coordinator. Arredondo plans to transition to a full-time position with the company when he completes his degree in May. ECC leaders are committed to providing ongoing financial support so that any student who needs assistance can accomplish their educational and career goals, despite increased adversity and economic hardships. Its Small Business Development Center connected area employers with state and federal resources, helping them to stay afloat as much of the economy shut down. The college’s Makerspace manufactured more than 10,000 face shields and visors in partnership with High School District 214 to equip frontline essential workers. The college developed and launched a free contact tracing program to train workers and help slow the spread of COVID-19. Recognizing the tremendous financial hardship facing many students and community members, the college has taken significant measures to support access and affordability. Because of its strong financial standing, the college was able to freeze tuition for a second year and implement various tuition relief initiatives, scholarships and grants. More than 1,000 Chromebooks and WiFi hot spots were purchased for students in their remote
learning environment. For students who are near completion but face an unexpected financial hurdle, Finish Line grants are available. Our Educational Foundation has awarded more than $300,000 in emergency funds to assist students with rent, food and other immediate needs. Harper College is committed to doing whatever it takes for our students to succeed. As we continue to navigate this crisis, we are looking to the future. En lo cinematográfico, la representación del desastre moral y sociológico ha tenido grandes estandartes, y en lo particular, enfrentar esas catástrofes desde un punto de vista juvenil, con toda la intensidad y desmesura emocional que ello implica, se siente como un método muy competente para transmitirlas. Hablando de nuestro objeto crítico, Beast Beast (Danny Madden, 2020), resulta terriblemente sencillo entrar en su microcosmos sureño que coloca preocupaciones que han atravesado las décadas en manos de las nuevas generaciones. La película cuenta una historia partida en tres: en cada una de ellas, seguimos a un personaje diferente que toma decisiones reprobables en algún momento de su arco argumental. Krista es una joven actriz en ciernes de carisma arrollador y alegría contagiosa, Nito un recién llegado al pueblo apasionado del skate que lidia con un hogar disfuncional, y Adam un veinteañero aspirante a youtuber que siente gran pasión por las armas de fuego. Sus tres relatos confluirán a lo largo del filme, y de esos choques nacerán las verdaderas preguntas y respuestas que plantea el director y guionista: cómo enfrentarse a la América de Donald Trump desde un punto de vista sociológico cuando se tiene toda la vida por delante. Se mete de lleno con la problemática del control de las armas, y mientras hace pronunciar a sus personajes discursos populistas, va dejando un poso crítico
que no por poco sutil tiene menos validez. La dependencia del «qué dirán», la autovalidación basada en opiniones externas, la desconexión con una realidad que no tiene demasiado interés en buscar un punto de confluencia con ellos: todo ello explorado sin vallas intelectuales que debamos saltar compone un todo estilístico que brilla con una luz deslumbrante con cada minuto consumido. La realidad de Beast Beast, naturalista desde su estilo fílmico y brillante en su diseño sonoro —ese palo que golpea la verja, ese percusión improvisada, ese skate que corre y compone—, se percibe como una gran bola de nieve que va aumentando su entidad a medida que gira sobre sí misma, hasta el punto de que es capaz de crecer en intensidad sin descuidar a ninguno de sus tres protagonistas. La tragedia, como comentábamos, está descompuesta en sus partes más elementales, y es a través de un gran acto de importancia catártica —que no desvelaremos para que el espectador pueda disfrutar plenamente de esta pequeña joya cinematográfica— que se permite unirlas en una explosión unificadora. Como si de un relato corto que se abraza con otro se tratara, juega la carta de las «historias cruzadas» con gran gusto espacial: no se percibe nada forzado ni ningún juego de montaje que lleve al respetable a ningún tipo de equívoco, de trampa, sino que usa las localizaciones y el recorrido vital de Krista, Nito y Adam —todos ellos muy bien explorados y documentados— para ir escribiendo una sola partitura fragmentada en movimientos que se complementan a la perfección. terriblemente culpabilizadoras, es decir, desde fuera y en el vacío podríamos considerar que sus actos son censurables e incluso mezquinos, pero Danny Madden lo hila todo con tanta precisión que encadena el fallo de uno con el error de otro hasta complementarlos en un único y enorme evento adverso que se ve tremendamente condicionado por la influencia de la sociedad y sus taras. En este sentido, la beligerancia y el conservadurismo trumpista están representados bajo la forma de un influjo invisible que se filtra en todas las parcelas de la vida diaria, apelando a falacias universales como la de «las armas dan seguridad» o la de «donde fueres, haz lo que vieres», que corrompen y restringen el libre albedrío de modo que, en la práctica, ser dueño de los propios actos pierde incluso cierto sentido. Beast Beast, que se beneficia de unas interpretaciones maravillosas sin excepción pero que tiene en Shirley Chen en el papel de Krista a un diamante de brillo infinito, trae de vuelta el debate sobre las nuevas tecnologías y las armas de fuego desde un prisma conmovedor que no da concesiones ni deja prisioneros. Mientras dignifica a una generación perdida —que sería como si hiciésemos un cóctel con Nación salvaje (Sam Levinson, 2018) y Lovecut (Iliana Estañol, Johanna Lietha, 2020)— y le otorga motivaciones y calamidades propias, se permite el lujo de no resultar condescendiente y mantener un espíritu crítico que no dependa de cohortes ni fechas de nacimiento. La bestia, como dicen, está lista para actuar.

Summer Connection Prepares Students for 2021-22 School Year U-46 and community organizations partner to provide more summertime learning opportunities
ELGIN – School District U-46 will offer a variety of summertime experiences, under the program name “U-46 Summer Connection,” to help students connect to extended academic, physical fitness and outdoor, artistic, and other opportunities. Also new this summer are three specific programs to help incoming students in 7th, 8th, 9th and 12th grade prepare for the year ahead. “We understand that this past school year didn’t allow students to connect with their friends and teachers as they would have in a normal year,” said School District U-46 Superintendent Tony Sanders. “Our U-46 Summer Connection programs aim to help students develop their learning communities, explore interests, and catch up or get ahead academically for the 2021-22 school year.” The District will offer a variety of experiences for elementary through high school students, while still adhering to all current safety measures and practices. Elementary Community Opportunities Earlier this spring, the District invited community organizations to submit proposals for summertime programming that would provide fun, innovative, enrichment and/or recreation programs for elementary students. The District asked that programs feature one
or more of the following elements: environmental education and connecting youth with nature; exploring various curricula such as STEM, STEAM, visual and performing arts, and leadership; building self-esteem and self-efficacy; promoting cross-cultural experiences; and promoting active living. On Monday, the Board of Education approved eight organizations to provide half or full-day programming that meets the District’s criteria. All programming will be free to families with the District using federal Covid relief funds to cover the expense. Programs will be offered through local park districts, arts, and childcare and children’s organizations. Families will receive information about registration later this month and all updates will be posted on the Summer Connection website page. Elementary students who need additional support will be invited to join an in-person summer school session that will focus on reading and math. Middle school students will also have access to classes to help them recover credits while high school students will be able to take classes to get ahead or to make up credits lost during the past school year. Additionally, the District will offer extended learning opportunities for students with special needs through traditional programming offered each summer.
New Middle and High School Camps Middle and high school students will also have access to three new voluntary and free programs to help them prepare for the year ahead. Registration for all three programs opens April 13 and runs through May 6, 2021.
The Middle School Experience U-46 will host a new summer program, called The Middle School Experience, for all students who will be in 7th and 8th grade in a U-46 middle school for the 2021-22 school year. The Middle School Experience is a fourday voluntary program that will be hosted at each middle school and will feature community and team-building activities aligned to social-emotional learning standards. The programming aims to familiarize these students with their teachers, peers, their buildings and schedules. Students will participate in a variety of activities for critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication.
The Freshman Connection The Freshman Connection will serve incoming first-time freshmen for the 2021-22 school year. Is a four-day voluntary program that will be hosted at each comprehensive high school. Students who register will attend programming at the high school where they will be enrolled for the 2021-22 school year.
This program will feature community and team-building activities aligned to social-emotional learning standards and help familiarize freshmen with their teachers, their new buildings and high school schedules. Students will participate in a variety of activities for critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication.
The College Jumpstart U-46 will also host a new summer program, called The College Jumpstart, for all incoming 12th grade students. The College Jumpstart is a three-day voluntary program that will be offered at each comprehensive high school. It will cover topics important for incoming seniors such as developing a post-secondary plan, exploring post-secondary options, college applications, essays, letters of recommendation, financial aid, and other post-secondary resources. Students who register will attend programming at the high school they will attend as seniors in the 2021-22 school year. “We hope that these three programs will give students a running start for the new school year,” said Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Schools Instruction and Equity Lela Majstorovic. “They are designed to support students who are entering a new phase in their educational journey and might appreciate the extra time, information and resources to become prepared for success in the fall.”
