Celebrando el Mes de la Herencia Hispana
El objetivo que tiene el gobierno de los Estados Unidos al enmarcar las celebraciones del Mes de la Herencia Hispana que se llevan a cabo cada año desde el 15 de septiembre hasta el 15 de octubre es recalcar las contribuciones que han hecho los hispanos a este país en campos tan variados como el económico, científico, político, deportivo, artístico y cultural. Basta con buscar a través de los anales de la historia para darnos cuenta que estas contribuciones se remontan hasta la época en que las trece colonias estaban luchando contra Gran Bretaña por su independencia. En aquella época, un grupo de cubanos recaudó una suma importante de dinero para ayudar a financiar la lucha por la independencia. Hubieron hispanos que dejaron su huella en el pasado: El oficial de la marina, de ascendencia española, David Glasgow Farragut, quien fue el primer almirante de la marina estadounidense; el músico, actor y productor de televisión de origen cubano Desi Arnaz, quien actuó en la popular serie cómica “I Love Lucy”, y el méxicoamericano Octaviano Larrazolo, el primer senador hispano en el congreso de Estados Unidos, solo para mencionar algunos. Pero, también hay hispanos que están haciendo historia hoy día. Usted podrá conocer un poco más
a algunos hispanos que están dejando huella en la cultura de este país en la sección de hispanos destacados en la página 15 de este suplemento especial. Sin embargo, esta semana también marca el 15º aniversario de un suceso trágico que afectó y transformó la vida de muchos estadounidenses, incluyendo a los de origen hispano. No podíamos empezar a informar sobre las celebraciones de nuestra herencia cultural sin antes reconocer que los acontecimientos del 11 de septiembre del 2001 estarán por siempre entrelazados con la historia estadounidense. Reflejos quiere aprovechar esta oportunidad para recordar y honrar a todas las víctimas y los sobrevivientes de los ataques del 11 de septiembre y, para agradecer a aquellos que a través de su sacrificio y trabajo dieron de su tiempo y energías, algunos poniendo sus vidas y salud en peligro, en el trabajo de rescate y reconstrucción de las zonas afectadas por la violencia incomprensible. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month The purpose of the U.S. government’s designation of Hispanic Heritage Month, which is held yearly from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, is to emphasize the contributions made by Hispanics to this country, in areas as varied as economics, science, politics, sports, the arts and culture. It would be enough to search in the annals of history to find out that these contributions date back to the time when the 13 colonies were battling Great Britain for independence. During those years, a group of Cubans raised an important sum of money to help fund the fight for independence. There were Hispanics who left their mark in the past: The Naval officer of Spanish descent David Glasgow Farragut, who was the first admiral in the U.S. Navy; musician, actor and TV producer of Cuban descent Desi Arnaz, who appeared in the hit sitcom “I Love Lucy”; and Mexican-American Octaviano Larrazolo, the first Hispanic senator in the U.S. Congress, to name a few. But there are Hispanics who are making history today. You can learn more about no-
table Hispanics who are putting their mark on the culture of this country in Outstanding Hispanics featured on Page 15 of this special pull-out section. However, this week marks also the 15th anniversary of a tragic event that transformed the lives of many Americans, including Hispanics. We could not begin to tell about our cultural heritage celebrations without acknowledging that the events of Sept. 11, 2001, will forever be intertwined with American history. Reflejos wants to take this opportunity to commemorate and honor all victims and survivors of the attacks of Sept. 11. We want to thank those, who through their sacrifice and work, gave their time and energy, some risking their lives and health, in the rescue and reconstruction efforts of the areas affected by the incomprehensible violence. U-46 Schools Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month District’s English Language Learners Department and schools host student and parent events
ELGIN – School District U-46 will shine a light on the culture of its Hispanic students in September with the District’s annual Hispanic Heritage Month, featuring appearances from special speakers at middle and high schools and a Districtwide presentation for parents. The annual celebration is sponsored by the District’s English Language Learners (ELL) Department, in cooperation with Cool Speak, A Youth Engagement Company. “More than half of our student body is of Hispanic descent so this month is another great opportunity to recognize the culture that is such a large and vibrant part of the District,” School District U-46 CEO Tony Sanders said. “We encourage all students to enhance their learning experiences by taking part in the activities throughout the month.” This year, two special guests, poet Joaquín Zihuatanejo and motivational speaker Ernesto Mejía, will be visiting select U-46 schools to inspire and inform student and parents in special assemblies on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 18-19. Zihuatanejo is an award-winning teacher, poet and spoken word artist who grew

up in the barrio of East Dallas. His work explores the duality of culture for Americans of Hispanic origin, and how Zihuatanejo found
refuge in a world of stories and poems. His presentations have been described as forthright and honest, but filled with compassion
and nuance, which focus on topics like leadership, teamwork and self-expression. Mejía, who is the son of Mexican immigrants, is a motivational speaker and expert on parental engagement. He has a compelling life story that stresses inner drive and the value of education. At 16, he was temporarily paralyzed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, but overcame the rare condition to become a college administrator. His speeches stress the opportunities presented through education and importance of persevering against hardships and obstacles. In addition to speaking to students, Mejía will speak to U-46 parents at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19 in the auditorium at Elgin High School. The talk, which is being presented by McDonald’s and the United States Hispanic Institute (USHLI), will be in Spanish, with simultaneous translation into English. Childcare will be available for children ages 5 to 10 only. On Thursday, Sept. 20, McDonald’s and the United States Hispanic Leadership will present a student leadership summit at the auditorium at EHS.

Ship made of World Trade Center steel ‘a constant reminder’ for Navy ensign

A kindergartner living in Japan when the United States of America was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001, former Grayslake resident Genelle Arandia remembers the phone ringing and people knocking on her family’s door during the night. “Mom was crying. It was upsetting,” says Arandia, whose father was a chief petty officer with the U.S. Navy. “He had to go to work. It really affected my parents. Everything kind of changed.” Now 22, Arandia is the living embodiment of that change, serving as an auxiliary officer in the engineering department of the USS New York, a 684-foot Navy warship built with 7½ tons of steel reclaimed from the World Trade Center wreckage. “It’s a constant reminder of why we serve and what our ship means. Never forget,” Arandia says, adding that the ship’s full motto is “Strength forged through sacrifice. Never forget.” She and the crew will don dress white uniforms for a service Tuesday remembering the nearly 3,000 Sept. 11 victims and honoring the courage and compassion shown that day. Too young to grasp the magnitude and horror of those attacks as they were happening, Arandia learned as a grade-schooler in Grayslake about the hijacked passenger planes that crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon and, after passengers intervened, a Pennsylvania field. She remembers seeing the photographs. “The one that stood out is the one of the man jumping from a burning building,” she says, recalling the iconic “Falling Man” photo of a man falling headfirst to his death from the North Tower of the World Trade Center. “You realize the gravity of the situation and how much it affected our country.” At Grayslake Central High School, Arandia played soccer and volleyball and read her compositions during Writer’s Week, but she already knew that she wanted to be in the Navy. She went to the University of Illinois at Chicago on an ROTC scholarship, majored in kinesiology with a concentration in exercise, science and health, graduated and was commissioned in May of this year. She was aboard the USS New York by June. “The Navy took care of my family, and I wanted to give back and serve,” says Arandia, whose parents, Manuel and Gemma Arandia, now work for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Florida. She wanted to serve on a ship with such strong ties to Sept. 11. “It was definitely a pull for me to be part of this crew.” she says. “Our crew has a lot of pride in what our ship stands for.” World Trade Center in New York after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. - Courtesy of U.S. Navy

IN KINDERGARTEN when the Sept. 11 attacks shocked the nation in 2001, former Grayslake resident Genelle Arandia now serves as an ensign on the USS New York, a Navy ship built with steel salvaged from those attacks.
As an ensign and second in command in her division, Arandia oversees 17 sailors, of which only two are women. “There’s definitely a lot of pressure for women in leadership roles. There’s more to prove,” Arandia says. “We don’t only deserve to be here, you should expect us to be here and expect us to do as much or as well as any man in the Navy, whether it’s a sailor, a chief or an officer.” The amphibious transport dock ship, which takes Marines to locations around the world, just came back from the waters off Europe and Africa for the Navy’s Sixth Fleet, which is headquartered in Naples, Italy. “I’m in charge of a lot of equipment on board and people depend on me,” says Arandia, who adds that she enjoys the responsibility of leadership but also has moments of fun and laughter. “I just want to be the best for my guys.” The reclaimed steel was used to make the bow and stem bar of the ship. “The stem is supposed to be the strongest part of the ship,” Arandia says. “It’s like our backbone.” The memory of Sept. 11 reminds everyone of how a peaceful world can turn to chaos in a moment. “I don’t think about that stuff. I’m here to serve, to do my job,” Arandia says. “I know the risk. But I tend to look forward. What can I do today that keeps us safe at home and my guys safe here?”

are hiring. Staffing companies in Illinois are the frontlines of a surging need for good workers and are headed to Elgin this fall with a clear message: We want you. The Staffing Services Association of Illinois (SSAI) is partnering with local lawmakers and the City of Elgin for a Job Fair on Thursday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Second Baptist Church in Elgin (1280 Summit St., Elgin). The first hour of the fair is reserved for veterans and church members, and the general public is invited to attend from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. SSAI represents staffing companies that provide temporary and day labor employment for the light-industrial sector, from warehousing to food packaging jobs. These jobs offer tremendous flexibility for workers who want multiple part-time jobs, to just work weekends or sporadically, or who just want a supplemental paycheck for their career. Seven members of SSAI will be at the Elgin Job Fair to meet with prospective employees, take resumes and discuss hundreds of currently open positions in the Chicago suburbs. State Sen. Cristina Castro, State Rep. Anna Moeller and the City of Elgin are partnering with SSAI and the Church to host and promote the event. Parking is available on site. “Our members have many open positions, and we are doing everything we can to get the word out far and wide that we have jobs with good pay and benefits and great flexibility to fill today,” said Dan Shomon of SSAI, who is helping organize the event. “I want to sincerely thank Sen. Castro, Rep. Moeller, the City of Elgin and their dedicated staff for helping us reach people in the Elgin area who are looking for a new path to a great job.” “We jumped at the chance to help our constituents find jobs when SSAI approached us,” said Sen. Esta falta podría hacer perder la “Green Card” a cualquier inmigrante En cerca de un mes, más exactamente el 15 de octubre, se cumple la última fecha para hacer tus declaraciones de impuestos del año 2017, si usted solicitó una extensión al IRS. Si usted es un inmigrante con residencia permanente o “Green Card” que va presentar su declaración de impuestos tenga presente que mentir o ocultar información en su declaración puede terminar en graves problemas legales, lo que daría con la perdida de su “Green Card” y en el peor de los casos en la deportación. The high school dropout rate among U.S. Hispanics has fallen to a new low, extending a decades-long decline, according to recently released data from the Census Bureau. The reduction has come alongside a long-term increase in Hispanic college enrollment, which is at a record high. The Hispanic dropout rate was 10% in 2016, with about 648,000 Hispanics ages 18 to 24 – out of more than 6.5 million nationally in that age group – not completing high school and not enrolled in school. Just five years earlier, the rate had been 16%. The overall high school dropout rate in the U.S. has also fallen substantially in recent decades, matching a record low of 6% in 2016. Hispanics have accounted for much of that decline. Since 1999, the earliest year for which data on all major races and ethnicities are available, the dropout rate among Hispanics has fallen by 24 percentage points, compared with 9 points among blacks, 3 points among whites and 2 points among Asians. (Hispanics, however, still have the highest dropout rate of these four groups.) The decline in the Hispanic dropout rate is particularly noteworthy given the large increase in Hispanic enrollment in U.S. public and private schools. Between 1999 and 2016, the number of Hispanics enrolled in public and private nursery schools, K-12 schools and colleges increased 80%, from 9.9 million to 17.9 million. By comparison, enrollment during the same period increased 30% among Asians (from 3.6 million to 4.7 million) and 4% among blacks (from 11.3 million to 11.7 million) while falling 14% among whites (from 47.3 million to 40.6 million). Total public school enrollment grew 7%, from 72.4 million to 77.2 million. The rise in Hispanic student enrollment reflects broader demographic shifts that have occurred in the U.S., with Hispanics accounting for a growing share of the nation’s overall population. But educational progress has also improved among Hispanics. As the Hispanic dropout rate has declined, the share of Hispanic high school graduates who enroll in college has risen. In 2016, 47% of Hispanic high school graduates ages 18 to 24 were enrolled in college, up from 32% in 1999. By comparison, the share of college enrollees among 18- to 24-year-old white, black and Asian high school graduates increased more modestly. A record 3.6 million Hispanics were enrolled in public and private colleges in the U.S. in 2016, up 180% from the 1.3 million who were enrolled in 1999. The increase in Hispanic college enrollment outpaced Hispanic enrollment growth in U.S. nursery and K-12 schools during the same span. While Hispanics have made important strides in educational attainment in recent decades, it’s important to note they still lag behind other races and ethnicities in several other academic measures. For example, Hispanics are less likely than other groups to obtain a four-year college degree.

M MEDITACIÓN AC ÓN Científicos de la Universidad de California, plantel Los Angeles (UCLA, por sus siglas en inglés), estudian actualmente la relación en# tre la meditación y la estructura físi# ca del cerebro. Desde tiempo atrás se sabe que esta práctica tiene efec# tos favorables en la salud psicológi# ca de las personas que la practican porque baja los niveles de ansiedad, ayuda a la concentración y brinda beneficios similares a los que tiene el sueño. Pero ahora, además, se ha descu# bierto que las personas que meditan
regularmente desde hace años han generado una capa más gruesa de células en la corteza cerebral. Los neurocientíficos observaron que la corteza cerebral desarrolló más co# nexiones entre las neuronas que las que se realiza en cerebros de perso# nas que no han meditado en su vida y que, entre más tiempo se llevan practicando esta actividad, mayor es la cantidad de “sinapsis” (relaciones entre células cerebrales) que se rea# lizan. Esta investigación está muy rela# cionada con otras sobre la plastici#
dad del cerebro. Hace más de una década se pensaba que las células cerebrales que morían eran incapa# ces de sustituirse, como lo hacen las células de otras partes del cuerpo. El resultado de esa situación era que, cuando una zona del cerebro era da# ñada, se quedaba así y no había for# ma de restablecer las funciones que se perdían debido a ello. Por ejemplo, una persona que reci# bía un golpe en la cabeza y perdía la vista, estaba condenada a permane# cer ciega. Lo mismo si se perdía la memoria u otras funciones. Análisis neurocientíficos actuales están de# mostrando que el cerebro es más “plástico” de lo que se pensaba, que es posible restablecer la co# municación entre neuronas, incluso si algunas de ellas mueren, lo que facilita la restitu# ción de capacida# des que se creían perdidas para siempre. La meditación, según los neuro#
científicos, es un mecanismo que podría generar intercambios de in# formación entre células que antes no los tenían, y que físicamente se manifiesta en el engrosamiento del córtex (corteza) cerebral y los do# bleces que se forman en este órgano. Los investigadores de la UCLA re# clutaron (en varios lugares donde se practica la meditación) a 49 per# sonas que meditaban desde hacía 20 años, al menos, y tomaron reso# nancias magnéticas de sus cerebros. Por otro lado, de una base de datos de resonancias, se eligió a otros 16 individuos del mismo sexo, edad y que fueran zurdos o diestros al igual que los meditadores. El resultado más impresionante del estudio fue observar que, entre más tiempo llevaba el individuo con esta práctica, más relaciones neuronales generaba y que esto era muy notorio contra los suje# tos que nunca habían practicado la meditación.Las áreas en las que más neuronas se habían generado tienen que ver con las funciones mentales del cerebro: pensamien# to, memoria, juicio y decisión. Sin dudas, la ciencia se aproxima cada vez más a desentrañar los enigmas en torno a la práctica de la meditación.

También es baja en productos lácteos, tiene poca carne roja y utiliza aceite de oliva como fuente principal de grasas. Consumir la dieta mediterránea puede hacer más lento el declive cognitivo, según muestra un nuevo estudio. Siguiéndola, las personas examinadas en el estudio tenían tasas más lentas de dicho declive, una incidencia menor del Mal de Alzheimer, y una mejor función cognitiva, en comparación con personas en sus mismas circunstancias pero que no seguían esa dieta. El equipo de Roy Hardman, del Centro de Psicofarmacología Humana en la Universidad Swinburne de Tecnología en Melbourne, Australia, revisó todos los artículos técnicos disponibles publicados entre los años 2000 y 2015 cuyos autores investigaron si la dieta mediterránea podría in#uir en los procesos cognitivos con el paso del tiempo, y en tal caso, cómo lo
hacía. El resultado más sorprendente de la revisión de resultados de estudios fue que los efectos positivos se encontraron en países de todo el mundo. Así que, aunque las personas residan fuera de la región mediterránea, los efectos cognitivos positivos de una mayor adherencia a la dieta mediterránea son similares en todas las investigaciones revisadas, tal como destaca Hardman. La dieta mediterránea mejoró la capacidad de prestar atención, la memoria y la habilidad con el lenguaje. Estos incluyen incrementar los micronutrientes, mejorar los desequilibrios de vitaminas y minerales, cambiar los per$les de lípidos al usar aceites de oliva como fuente principal de grasas alimentarias, mantener un peso adecuado o reducir potencialmente la obesidad, mejorar los polifenoles en la sangre, mejorar el metabolismo de la energía celular y quizá cambiar de manera bene$ciosa la microbiota intestinal.

Ford Fusion Energi, sintiendo el paso del tiempo POR: ROGER RIVERO

Este hibrido enchufable preserva varias de las características por las que el Fusion estándar -del cual deriva- nos gusta. Tiene un aspecto nítido, manejo hábil, y uno de los mejores sistemas de info-entretenimiento de toda la industria, el Sync 3. Por otra parte, el Fusion Energi comienza a enseñar el paso del tiempo, pues en sus seis años de existencia, poco se ha renovado, y en el sector de los híbridos, la innovación por parte de los competidores no falta. El interior le resultará familiar a los que hayan visto productos recientes de Ford. Una buena mezcla de materiales suaves al tacto de color negro o bicolor, y los acentos de plata mate producen un entorno agradable. Como mencionamos antes, el sistema de info-entretenimiento de Ford es uno de los mejores, con gráficos bien diseñados, rápido y por el mayor parte muy intuitivo, característica esta que mucho se aprecia a la hora de operarlo sin desviar mucho la atención de la carretera. Los asientos son muy cómodos e invitan a viajes largos, sin embargo, si decide hacerlos, tendrá que empacar solo lo necesario, pues la capacidad en el maletero es muy reducida. El espacio que ocupa las baterías deja solo 8.2 pies cúbicos de capacidad, bastante inferior a los 9.9 pies de uno de sus rivales, el Hyundai Sonata Hibrido.
Llevado por la ciudad, el tren motriz de 188 caballos de fuerza del Fusion hibrido funciona bien, y ofrece una buena conducción. Sin embargo, se siente lento cuando intentamos incorporarnos a la autopista o necesitamos algo de velocidad para adelantar. El híbrido enchufable Fusion Energi como el que probamos, puede recorrer hasta 21 millas solo con electricidad -quizás algo más si conduce como una abuelita precavida- y podrá recargar su batería agotada en 3 a 4 horas usando una estación de carga de nivel 2 de 240 voltios, o aproximadamente 7 horas con un enchufe doméstico. El consumo de combustible en manejo combinado
-ciudad-autopista- es de 42 millas por galón que, si bien no está nada mal, tampoco es el mejor de su clase. El sedán mediano Ford Fusion Energi 2018 está disponible en tres niveles de acabado. El base es el S Luxury, que comienza en los $33,400, seguido por el Titanium y el Platinum con precios de arrancada de $34,400 y $41,400 dólares respectivamente. En su clase, este no es un auto barato. Nosotros recomendaríamos un Energi Titaninm con el paquete de Driver Assist, que, aunque adiciona otros $ 1,320, se obtienen características de tecnología y confort además de algunas de las características de seguridad
presentes en el terminado Platinum como la alerta de mantenimiento de carril y la alerta de tráfico cruzado posterior. Renovado en el 2017, el Fusion Energi lleva 6 años en producción y sigue siendo un sedán apuesto, con una apariencia que lo separa de la mayoría de los sedanes actuales, un interior cómodo y elegante, y buenas cualidades de manejo, pero su relevancia en la arena de los híbridos cada día disminuye, pues a su alrededor proliferan modelos más eficientes, como el nuevo Honda Accord Clarity y modelos de Hyundai o Kia. En conclusión, el mayor atractivo de los híbridos enchufables a la corriente es su ahorro de combustible, para poder recuperar con el menor tiempo posible, el mayor precio de entrada de estos autos, pero en el caso del Energi, su alto costo inicial hará que el tiempo que necesite para resarcir su inversión sea, muy prolongado.
