“I was nervous all morning, but she comforts me,” Medina said afterward. “I feel better now that it’s over.”

Medina, who pulled an unresponsive driver out of his vehicle stuck on train tracks in Aurora just seconds before it was hit by a train, was awarded the 2021 Roscoe Ebey Citizen of the Year award by Kane County Sheriff Ron Hain.

“It is critical that we take time to recognize those citizens who go above and beyond in our community,” Hain said.

Saying he couldn’t do the incident justice by recounting it himself, Hain played the audio from the 911 call Medina made during those dramatic moments on Oct. 9.

Medina listened intently, frequently dropping his head and closing his eyes. The events in the recording unfolded just as he had described to the media last month, right down to the “Oh my gosh, there’s a train coming” moment when he realized the situation was truly dire.

At about 8:30 that evening, Medina was driving from his home in Aurora when he saw a vehicle stuck with its tires spinning on the train tracks at Barnes Road in Sugar Grove Township.

Medina parked his car in a safe spot and checked on the driver, who was unresponsive due to a medical emergency. As Medina called 911 and struggled to free the 72-year-old Aurora man, he saw the lights of an oncoming train.

“I knew it was close, but I couldn’t leave him on the tracks. There was no way,” Medina recounted later. “I had to get him out.”

Medina, 60, pulled the man from the vehicle, who fell “like an anchor” straight down onto the tracks. He said he was able to grab the man by his arm and pants and fling him off the tracks, but they were still too close. He rolled him down the hill seconds before the train hit.

A tear rolled down Medina’s masked cheek Tuesday as the recording reached that dramatic finish, with the train smashing into the vehicle. Hain frequently placed a reassuring hand on Medina’s back.

After the applause died down, Hain and former Sheriff Pat Perez, a longtime acquaintance of Medina’s, handed him the award.

“I was at the right place at the right time, and I’m thankful for that,” Medina said.

Hain said the driver was doing well but unable to attend the ceremony.

Medina said he’s had enough attention from the rescue, but he’ll still be keeping an eye out in case he needs to jump into action again.

“I’ll be looking,” he said. “That’s what I’d do anyway even without all this.”

Great America bringing back holiday lights

For the second year in a row, Six Flags Great America’s Holiday in the Park will be without roller coaster rides in favor of the new star attraction: more than three million twinkling lights.

This will be the fourth time the park has hosted a winter season with special live entertainment and decorations. This year will be the park’s most illuminated effort yet; last year the park boasted 2.5 million holiday lights.

While the big name roller coasters will be, as officials put it, in hibernation until spring, several family-friendly attractions such as the double-decker Columbia Carousel will be in operation.

And for the second straight year, guests will have the option to gaze at the lights from the comfort of their cars.

Unlike on walk-through days, guests in their cars will not be allowed to freely move about the park. Drivers will be directed through a park route to see the decorations and be entertained by performers as well as Santa and Mrs. Claus. The circuit will wind through 12 themed areas. The traditional Holiday in the Park experience will feature photo opportunities with costumed characters, including Santa Claus. There will also be seasonal treats and activities, including cookie

decorating, s’mores fire pits and places to write letters to Santa.

The Holiday in the Park Lights Drive-Thru Experience will begin Dec. 3 and run select nights through Jan. 9. The traditional, on-foot Holiday in the Park will begin Nov. 26 and run on weekends and select weeknights through

Dec. 30.

Tickets to the park start at $24.99 for a one-day pass and $59.99 for a season pass.

Elk Grove Technology Park developers propose industrial building in Hoffman Estates

A RENDERING of the 201,600-square-foot industrial building Brennan Investment Group wants to build near the Bystronic headquarters and Bell Works Chicagoland in Hoffman Estates’ Huntington 90 Business Park.

The developers of the Elk Grove Technology Park are seeking to expand westward with plans for a light industrial building they believe will attract eager tenants to a highgrowth area of Hoffman Estates.

Representatives of Brennan Investment Group received positive feedback this week during the Hoffman Estates village board’s review of the proposed 201,600-square-foot building, which would house one to four tenants on 70 acres north of the Bystronic headquarters in the Huntington 90 Business Park.

Village trustees plan Monday to recommend that the Cook County Board approve a Class 6B tax incentive for the project, which would cut property taxes approximately in half over the course of 12 years.

But they want some assurance the project, which has no signed tenants so far, wouldn’t remain that way indefinitely.

“I just don’t want a building to go up and not be filled for any real length of time,” said Trustee Gary Stanton, who chairs the village’s planning, building and zoning committee.

“I don’t think that would be a problem,”

said attorney Matt Holmes, representing Brennan Investment Group. “We believe the market is fairly kind of flush at this point.”

Kevin Kramer, the village’s economic development director, agrees. He said there are a number of high-end technology and light-industrial companies in the region ready to jump at the opportunity of new space under construction.

“If it’s built, they will come,” Kramer said.

“There’s more confidence in the industrial market than in the past 40 years.”

Holmes said the tenants are expected to be similar to those already found in the Elk Grove

Technology Park. The hope is to get construction started early next year, but how long it would take depends on how much the building needs to be adapted for its tenants, he added.

A data center, for instance, would require more power but none of the dock doors that a manufacturer would need, Holmes said.

Kramer added that the further growth of industrial businesses around it is likely good news for Bell Works — the neighboring redevelopment of the former AT&T campus — which is seeking to add more office and retail tenants as well as build multifamily housing in a later phase.

U-46 to Offer COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics at All 40 Elementary Schools Students ages 5-11 to be able to get vaccine during school day

ELGIN - With federal health officials now recommending that children ages 5 to 11 be vaccinated against COVID-19, School District U-46 is holding optional vaccine clinics at all 40 of its elementary schools this month.

The clinics will allow students ages 5 to 11 to be vaccinated with the pediatric dose of the Pfizer vaccine during the school day.

For a student to participate, their parent or guardian must register them for the 1st and 2nd doses of the vaccine, and submit a consent form to their school nurse.

There is no mandate for students to participate, it is completely optional and free.

The vaccine clinics will be held in school libraries.

“I know that many families of younger children have been eagerly awaiting the chance to give them the protection offered by the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Superintendent Tony Sanders. “We decided to offer these clinics at our elementary schools as a service to our busy families. They won’t need to wor-

ry about transportation or locating a trusted provider, and their children can be vaccinated in a place that is familiar and comfortable to them.”

The vaccine clinics will start at 13 of U-46’s elementary schools on Friday, Nov. 12, with another 13 schools hosting clinics on Friday, Nov. 19, and the final 14 holding their events on Tuesday, Nov. 23. Because the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine requires two doses, students will receive their second shot about three weeks after their first, also at school.

Parents who want to be present while their child is vaccinated will be able to do so by letting the school know in advance, answering a few COVID-19 screening questions upon their arrival, and using the District’s normal guest-management system to receive a temporary ID. Pop-up restaurant inspired by ‘Elf ’ coming to Westin in Itasca

A modern Christmas movie classic is being celebrated with a monthlong dining event in Itasca.

The Westin Chicago Northwest is introducing a new holiday dinner party event, the “Buddy The Elf Pop-Up Christmas Experience.”

Starting Friday, Nov. 26, and ending Thursday, Dec. 23, Westin’s Seared Restaurant in the first floor lobby area of the hotel will be designed to mirror the theme of the 2003 Christmas film starring Will Ferrell.

The feature grew out of a brainstorming idea by general manager Tim Ohrn, who is a fan of the movie. Ohrn wanted to incorporate the movie into a holiday event, making participants feel as if they’re walking onto a movie set.

Rick Marsh, Westin Chicago Northwest’s director of sales and marketing, said that the experience is a great way to create a fun program while also hosting a gala that helps the Humanitarian Service Project charity in Carol Stream.

“People don’t throw Christmas galas the way they used to,” Marsh said. “I think with all the stress that people have been having, wouldn’t it be nice to have something a little

bit more fun these days?”

According to Marsh, the plan is to sell tickets on a large-group basis for 30 to 50 people at first, then possibly make the experience available for smaller groups or couples, depending on how many events are booked throughout its run.

Booked events will run for two to three hours. The cost will be $50 per person for lunch and $100 per person for dinner. Dining tickets booked with rooms will have 50% of the room rental fees go to charity.

Marsh said that the event will incorporate as many props and references to the movie as possible, right down to the food menu. Entrees include salmon, lamb with mint glaze and rib-eye with candied yams and brown sugar carrots. Dessert will be a large bowl of ice cream with chocolate Pop Tarts, M&Ms, candy, candy corn and candy canes.

The dessert candy, candy corn, syrup and candy canes references the main “food groups” according to Buddy, Ferrell’s character in the movie.

The event will feature a recreation of Walter Hobbs’ apartment and the Gimbles mall from the film and will include a SELFIE station for group photos.

Su padre apoyó su decisión con una condición. “Me pidió que aprovechara cada oportunidad que tuviera y que siempre hiciera lo mejor que pudiera en todo lo que haga. Hasta el día de hoy, tengo en cuenta su consejo”, dijo Chávez.

Su primer paso fue aprender el idioma para poder asistir a clases universitarias en inglés. “Aprender inglés era algo que había estado tratando de lograr desde que estaba en la escuela primaria”, explicó Chávez. “La frustración de no poder decir lo que quería me motivó a inscribirme en clases de inglés como segundo idioma en ECC”.

Chávez estaba emocionado de compartir la clase y aprender con personas de diferentes culturas. “Algunos de nosotros no podíamos entendernos, pero teníamos algo muy bueno en común.

Queríamos ser parte de esta sociedad y tener la capacidad de comunicarnos entre nosotros”, dijo Chávez.

Chávez decidió desafiarse a sí mismo aún más y se inscribió en clases de preparación en inglés para lograr el GED o diploma de equivalencia de preparatoria. Aprobó el examen de Desarrollo de Educación General o

GED® y lo hizo tan bien que recibió una beca para asistir a cursos con créditos en ECC. En 2019 obtuvo su primera credencial universitaria, un certificado de operador de máquina de control numérico por computadora (CNC). Continuó sus estudios y también obtuvo un título de asociado en ciencias aplicadas en fabricación integrada de computadoras.

Juan Chavez moved to the United States when he was 19 years old with hopes to fulfill his dream of learning English and finding a meaningful career. His father supported his decision on one condition. “He asked me to take advantage of every opportunity that I had and to always do my best in whatever I do. To this day, I keep his advice in mind, said Chavez” His first step was to learn the language so he could attend college classes in English.

“Learning English was something that I had been trying to achieve since I was in elemen-

tary school,” Chavez explained. “The frustration of not having the ability to say what I wanted gave me the motivation to sign up for English as a second language classes at ECC.” Chavez was excited to share and learn with people from different cultures. “Some of us could not understand each other, but we had something great in common. We wanted to be part of this society and have the ability to communicate with each other,” said Chavez.

Chavez decided to challenge himself further and signed up for high school equivalency prep classes in English. He passed the General Education Development or GED® exam and did so well he received a scholarship to attend credit courses at ECC. In 2019 he earned his first college credential, a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine operator certificate. He continued his studies and also earned an associate of applied science degree in computer integrated manufacturing.

Now with his professional certification and degree in hand, Chavez said, “I have a better job, with better benefits and pay. My story is proof of the fact that ECC is a place where people can come and fight for their dreams.”

Las declaraciones del mandatario se producen cuando el Departamento de Justicia está negociando con los abogados de esas familias algún tipo de compensación.

Elevando el tono de su voz, Biden dijo que, sin importar cuáles fueran las circunstancias, aquellas familias a las que el Gobierno de Trump arrebató a sus hijos merecen una compensación.

Este espectacular bosque de piedra, también conocido como Las Columnas del Cielo del Sur, pretende ser el modelo detrás del magní#co paisaje de las montañas colgantes de la película Avatar y ha estado recibiendo mucha atención como resultado.

No es ninguna sorpresa que este parque ha sido designado Patrimonio de la Humanidad y Geoparque Mundial por la Unesco. El área es también el hogar de varios grupos étnicos, el Tu, Bai y los grupos minoritarios Miao habitan en la zona, añadiendo un elemento muy especial cultural e histórico para cualquier visita a este hermoso lugar. Este fue el primer Parque Nacional de China. Las

hermosas montañas y formaciones rocosas se concentran en seis puntos escénicos principales y en más de 90 sitios secundarios. Hay cinco entradas alrededor de las montañas de Zhangjiajie. Las dos entradas principales están en la villa de Zhangjiajie (Zhangjiajie Village) en el lado oeste del parque, y la entrada de Wulingyuan en el Este. Molnupiravir: primer medicamento oral diseñado para tratar la covid-19

Carolina Pikacho Fronteras de la Notiica - BBC La pastilla, molnupiravir, podrá administrarse dos veces al día a pacientes que han dado positivo en un test y que presentan al menos un factor de riesgo para desarrollar la enfermedad grave.

Desarrollada originalmente para tratar la gripe, redujo el riesgo de hospitalizaciones y muertes a la mitad durante los ensayos clínicos.

El ministro de Salud británico, Sajid Javid, dijo que el tratamiento es "revolucionario" para los más vulnerables e inmunodeprimidos.

Molnupiravir fue diseñado por las farmacéuticas estadounidenses Merck, Sharp y Dohme y Ridgeback Biotherapeutics.

Se trata del primer medicamento antiviral oral para la covid-19.

La píldora ataca la enzima que utiliza el virus para replicarse, e introduce así errores en su código genético.

Esta acción prevendría su multiplicación, manteniendo baja la carga viral y reduciendo la gravedad de la enfermedad.

Merck dijo que este mecanismo debería hacer que el tratamiento sea igual de efectivo ante las nuevas variantes del virus que puedan surgir.

La MHRA anunció que la tableta fue autorizada para usarse en personas con sintomatología leve a moderada y con al menos un factor de riesgo asociado a mayor gravedad del síndrome, como la obesidad, edad avanzada, diabetes y padecimiento coronario.

La directora ejecutiva del organismo, la doctora June Raine, lo describió como "otra terapia a añadir a nuestra armadura contra la covid-19".

"Es el primer antiviral en el mundo que se aprueba para esta enfermedad y que puede tomarse oralmente en lugar de administrarse por vía intravenosa", añadió.

Podrá así tomarse en casa o fuera del hospital, antes que la enfermedad evolucione a un estado más grave.

Durante los ensayos clínicos se administró molnupiravir a 775 pacientes que se habían contagiado recientemente de covid-19 y se observó que:7,3% de los que tomaron la pastilla fueron

hospitalizados, frente a un 14,1% de aquellos a los que se les dio placebo No hubo muertes entre los que tomaron molnupiravir, mientras que en el grupo de los que tomaron el placebo fallecieron ocho por la enfermedad Los datos fueron publicados en un comunicado de prensa y aún no han sido revisados por pares.

Los resultados del ensayo sugieren que el molnupiravir debe tomarse poco después de que se desarrollen los síntomas para que surta efecto.

Un estudio anterior en pacientes que ya habían sido hospitalizados por covid-19 grave se detuvo porque sus resultados habían sido decepcionantes.

Merck es la primera empresa en informar de los resultados de un ensayo de una pastilla para tratar la covid-19, pero otras empresas están trabajando en tratamientos similares.

La estadounidense P#zer ha comenzado las pruebas de dos tabletas antivirales, mientras que la suiza Roche está trabajando en un medicamento parecido.

El musgo que se come la polución Carolina Pikacho Fronteras de la Notiica - BBC News Un pequeño bosque en plena urbe. No, no se trata del típico jardín o parque, ni es un conjunto de árboles al uso. Su nombre es City Tree y, según sus ideólogos, ofrece la protección al medioambiente de 275 árboles naturales. Gracias a él, el problema de la contaminación puede serlo un poco menos.

City Tree, creado por cientí$cos alemanes, es un musgo despierto, perspicaz e inteligente. Este vegetal es capaz de destruir las partículas dañinas de dióxido de nitrógeno y dióxido de carbono, además de generar oxígeno. Y al mismo tiempo, enfría el aire que lo circunda.

Los investigadores alemanes han diseñado una pared con este musgo cuya característica primordial es que está habituado a vivir sin tierra y que trabaja naturalmente como un $ltro de aire. !simismo, almacena las partículas contaminantes transmutándolas en nutrientes.

El musgo es una planta compuesta por múltiples especies, pero las elegidas para este proyecto parece que son las que más agentes contaminantes absorben. Otra de sus peculiaridades es que tiene una super$cie de hojas mucho más amplia y frondosa que cualquier otro tipo de variedad y es capaz de acaparar enormes cantidades de agentes que contaminan: CO2, óxido de nitrógeno y polvo.

Las ciudades no se caracterizan precisamente por sus amplias zonas verdes. El valor añadido de los árboles es que aportan oxígeno, embeben agentes contaminantes y evaporan agua. De este modo, reducen la temperatura del aire.

Precisamente por esto, a la compañía ale-

mana Green City Solutions se le ha ocurrido la solución sostenible de crear estos paneles de musgo. Centenares de árboles se aglutinan en un pequeño cuadro, tan solo cuatro metros de alto por tres de ancho. Sus reducidas dimensiones lo convierten en un dispositivo idóneo para ubicarlo en cualquier sitio. Una llamativa instalación que puede incorporar incluso un banco, ofreciendo aún más funcionalidad a su entorno, y que ocupa tan solo el 1 % de una arboleda.

Otro de sus puntos fuertes es el novedoso sistema de riego que lleva incorporado. Íntegramente automatizado, suministra nutrientes gracias a un tanque incorporado en su parte central. !demás, almacena el agua de la lluvia, lo que lo hace aún más sostenible y autosu$ciente.

La e$ciencia energética, por otra parte, se consigue a través de paneles solares que generan energía para que el bosque de musgo pueda girar y sus baterías estén alimentadas en todo momento. !demás, su construcción es exclusivamente ecológica, fabricado por materiales completamente reciclables.

Esta pared vegetal dispone también de sensores capaces de evaluar la humedad del suelo, la calidad del agua y la temperatura ambiente. ! ellos se suman otros dispositivos que calculan la calidad del aire y su e$ciencia, información que envían a la empresa para que pueda ser analizada.

La joven pareja se comprometió en agosto de 2017, seis meses después es de haber hecho público su noviazgo. La noticia la dio Carola en su cuenta de Instagram, donde compartió una fotografía presumiendo el anillo de compromiso: “‘¡Siempre juntos! Nos casamos. Más feliz, imposible. Te amo”, escribió la joven que en ese momento tenía 21 años.

Posteriormente, en diciembre de ese mismo año, nació el primogénito de la pareja, a quien también llamaron Sergio.

Recién estrenada en los festivales de Toronto y Telluride, la cinta irlandesa-británica del director Kenneth Branagh es un trabajo semiautobiográfico que ha sido comparado ya con la multipremiada “Roma”, lanzada por Alfonso Cuarón en 2018

En el periodo histórico conocido como The Troubles, se vivió un ambiente de combates callejeros, y lanzamiento de bombas molotov, en la película vemos cómo afecta esto a un barrio de clase obrera católica.

Estas situaciones violentas se reflejan en la recién estrenada película, que se centra en la visión de Buddy, un niño de nueve años interpretado por Jude Hill, cuyo único escape a la violencia es su amor por el cine, y por sus padres, interpretados por Caitriona Balfe y Jamie Dornan; y por sus abuelos, encarnados por Judi Dench y Ciarán Hinds.

La cinta que se cuenta como un trabajo semiautobiográfico, ha sido reconocida por el director, quien también fue artífice del guion, como su obra más personal, hecho que resuena en torno a otro proyecto cinematográfico que cuenta con las mismas características y de inmediato remitió a él a la crítica especializada.

Algunos asistentes que pudieron ver la película en Toronto, y a principios de septiembre en el festival de Telluride, Colorado, han coincidido en compararla por sus similitudes con Roma, del mexicano Alfonso Cuarón, trabajo de 2018 que logró posicionarse internacionalmente y le valió gran cantidad de premios, entre ellos el de la Academia estadounidense.

El mes pasado entrevistamos al capitán del Ejército de los EEUU, Nicholas Bonavia, sobre algunos de los beneficios de unirse al Ejército. Desde que la publicamos, recibimos varias preguntas, por lo que trajimos al Capitán Bonavia para que las respondiera.

P: Me gusta la idea de servir a mi país, pero no quiero lastimarme a largo plazo. ¿Los años de servicio me rezagaran en relación a mis compañeros de estudio en términos de avance profesional? - Frankie L. en Chicago CPT Bonavia: Yo diría que es todo lo contrario. No solo servirás a tu país, sino que te ayudarás a ti mismo para dar el siguiente paso en tu carrera. Muchos de tus amigos probablemente estén pagando miles de dólares para hacer pasantías y obtener certificaciones profesionales. ¡En el Ejército, te pagamos mientras aprendes! Last month we interviewed U.S. Army Captain Nicholas Bonavia about some of the benefits of joining the Army. Since its printing we received several questions, so we brought back Captain Bonavia to answer them.

Q: I recognize the Army can provides some really great incentives to join but I simply don’t want it fight in a war. No perk is worth getting shot for. Is there any way around this? – Raphael Z. in Waukegan CPT Bonavia: Yes, absolutely, not everyone in the Army gets shot at. In fact, most of our career paths don’t involve combat. We have almost every job you see in the civilian world. We have doctors, lawyers, plumbers, electricians, engineers, cooks, truck drivers, human resources staff and dozens more. Unlike other branches of service, the Army lets you select your career so you won’t get stuck with a job that is outside of your comfort zone.

Q: I like the idea of serving my country, but I don’t want to hurt myself in the long run. Will years of service set me back against my peers in terms of career advancement? – Frankie L. in Chicago CPT Bonavia: I would say the opposite is true. You won’t be just serving your country you will be helpCaptain Nicholas Bonavia ing yourself for the next step in your career. Many of your friends are probably paying thousands of dollars to do internships and earn professional certifications. In the Army, we pay you while you learn! In fact, you can earn some certifications while you serve. For example, Army truck drivers automatically earn their CDL license.

Other certificates include the Microsoft Certified Professional, EMT/Paramedic, Pharmacy Technician Certification and many more. These make you instantly more hirable on your first day out of the Army.

Q: The idea of travel and adventure sounds great, but I’m worried I won’t be able to get my foot in the door of my dream companies if all I have is the Army on my resume. – Julia L. in Oak Park.

CPT Bonavia: Having Army experience instantly will open doors as many companies have Veteran Hiring Preferences. In addition, the Army has something called the PaYS Program. It’s designed to help Soldiers prepare for a career after the Army by connecting them with employers who understand the skill, discipline and work ethic that military service members bring to a business. Upon completion of your Army service, you will be guaranteed a job interview at the PaYS partner company of your choice.

Q: I passed up an opportunity to join the Army after high school to go to college, but it turned out that college wasn’t for me. Did I miss my chance? -Alex F. in Rosemont CPT Bonavia: : No, not at all. We understand that priorities shift over time. You can join the Army any time up until your 35th birthday.

You may be able to even join at a higher rank based on your education or existing job skills.
