the Romeoville Area Chamber of Commerce. Staff Bios Meet the people behind the Romeoville Area Chamber! Lenny Criddle Executive Director Lenny received his undergraduate degree from DePaul and his MBA from the University of Notre Dame. He is a former business and staff development manager, business owner and Chamber board member. He is involved in numerous nonprofit boards, where he prefers to focus on leadership, networking and organizational improvement. When not serving the community, Lenny spends time with his wife and five kids. director@romeovillechamber.org

Madison Blackwood Creative Director Madison received her undergraduate degree from the University of St. Francis and her master’s degree in communications from Northwestern University. She has previously worked for other chambers and organizations, helping those businesses grow through the use of social media and marketing campaigns. Olivia Hegber Membership Director Olivia received her undergraduate degree in human and educational services from Illinois State University. She has previously worked with a local nonprofits mentoring at-risk youth within the Bolingbrook and Romeoville community and has also run multiple special events at Cog Hill, from golf outings to weddings. She is a Romeoville resident who is also a part of the Romeoville Rotary Club. HISTORICAL SOCIETY

omeo, Juliet, and Lockport were built to house the workers for the I&M Canal in the 1800s. Romeo remained a small village of two streets on the east side of the Canal and on Isle a la Cache in the Des Plaines River. Juliet was renamed Joliet for explorer Louis Joliet. Romeo incorporated into a village in 1895 and was later renamed Romeoville. A grocery/ hotel and numerous taverns were the main businesses. Romeo Beach was a popular swimming getaway for people from Chicago and its suburbs. A race track on the west side of the canal also attracted crowds who needed to eat. A small restaurant near the track grew into the still-popular White Fence Farm, owned by the Hastert family. The village was surrounded by farms in the unincorporated township.

The I&M Canal was crossed at Romeo Road on a narrow bridge that swung 90 degrees to permit river traffic to pass. It was replaced in 1998 and is visible from the Centennial Trail north of 135thStreet near the Isle a la Cache Museum.

One of the farms was owned by Patrick Fitzpatrick. It is believed to have been a station on the Underground Railroad in the 1800s. Fitzpatrick donated a portion of his land to the Catholic Diocese for a boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; school which has grown into Lewis University. The Fitzpatrick House, not open to the public, is south of Lewis University on the east side of the road. Neal Murphy was elected Mayor in 1929 and remained in office until 1969. There was a small deficit in the treasury when he took office. It was paid off within a year and the

village remained debt-free through his tenure.

All one-room schools were closed in 1954. Valley View School was built in Romeoville to replace those serving the farm families in DuPage Township and western Lockport Township. Older students in the area attended Lockport High School until overcrowding led to building Lockport West south of Romeoville in 1964. As Romeoville and Bolingbrook grew, the need for more schools was acute, but half day sessions were not desired. In 1970, Patrick Page, a teacher in the district, devised a system

where students would attend school for 45 days, then have 15 off, all year. Thus threequarters of the students would be in school at a time. All students in a neighborhood had the same schedule, so older students were available to care for the younger ones. This system attracted attention from school districts around the country. In 1958, construction of Hampton Park began on farm land on the West side of the Canal. The prefabricated houses, with windows and doors installed, were delivered by semi-

trucks with attached cranes to unload the walls. From 10 to 15 homes were built each day. By the 1960 census, the village population had grown from several hundred to over 3000. Some of the original families remain in their homes. Five churches began at this time to serve the growing population. Several started in the schools until their buildings were finished.

The Romeoville Jaycees surveyed residents to learn the needs of the village. The resounding answer was: a library! They began the process of starting a library for Romeoville and the smaller village of Bolingbrook. Fountaindale Public Library District opened identical buildings in 1975. In 2008, the Romeoville building was transferred to the Des Plaines Valley Public Library District as its third building. Renamed the White Oak Library District, the Romeoville and Lockport buildings were remodeled, and the Crest Hill library relocated between 2011 and 2013.

omeoville’s location provides excellent accessibility to highway, rail, water shipping and air transportation. Romeoville is conveniently located along the Stevenson Expressway (I-55), with direct access at Weber Road and Joliet Road. What is even more attractive is Romeoville’s ongoing commitment to improve existing routes and secure additional modes of transportation for residents and businesses, such as the new Metra station on 135th, that was recently expanded even more since its original completion. Construction has started for a “diverging diamond” interchange at Weber Road and I-55. This project includes the widening of Weber Road from 135th Street to 119th Street. Improvements will help to address future needs along the Weber Road Corridor.

INNOVATION HUB

Lewis University Aims to Assist Entrepreneurs

ewis University and the Des Plaines River Valley Enterprise Zone have launched a regional business incubator program called the Innovation Hub. Conveniently situated on the corner of Airport Road and Highway 53 in Romeoville, the Innovation Hub will support entrepreneurs who are looking to pursue, launch or scale a business.

The hub offers co-working space to house the startups, coaching/mentorship and other support programs and services that guide entrepreneurs from idea through market commercialization. Companies interested in growing a business or advance a new product idea can participate in two ways: in a pre-incubation program geared toward advancing a seed-stage idea into a viable business or by taking advantage of resources and connections to scale a current business. The hub will offer customized start-up support seminars on topics such as intellectual property, proof-ofconcept, customer discovery, financing, brand awareness, design thinking, social media, the art of an investor pitch, profit mastery, process improvement, financing options and negotiations and contracts. Support services include digital media and design, video media, marketing/sales and data analytics/data security. he award-winning Romeoville Recreation Department exists to provide quality recreational services to all age groups in the community through a diversified selection of classes, programs, athletic leagues and community events. Toddlers to senior citizens can find an activity or event that will suit their needs. The park district offers over 40 special events, over 30 parks and recreational areas and many free events for families including summer Movies in the Park and Park Parties, the Rockinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the Ville concert series, a four-day festival called RomeoFest, Santa visits at the Winter Wonderland event and a Glow-inthe-Dark Egg Hunt in spring. The recreation

department continues to add and improve to its wide variety of leisure time activities that are offered to the residents and surrounding communities.

The hub of community leisure time activities takes place at Village Park, which features the 55,000-squarefoot Recreation Center, four baseball diamonds (one lighted baseball diamond), one lighted football field, lighted tennis courts, playgrounds, a picnic pavilion, horseshoe pits, a concession stand and an open recreational space.

The Recreation Center houses the 3,000-square-foot Fit-4-Life Fitness Center, which overlooks beautiful Village Park. Fitness center amenities include state-of-theart equipment, a free weight area, stretching area and locker rooms. The Edward Hospital Athletic and Event Center continues to fill its 76,000-square foot facility. This venue provides unique opportunities to the vast and growing sports market. It offers two indoor soccer

fields and two IHSA basketball courts/ volleyball courts, and six portable IHSA basketball courts for large tournament needs. Heritage Falls Water Park, located at 101 Troxel Ave., features pools, waterslides and much more.

Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hara Woods & Nature Preserve, located at 1034 W. 135th St. features fishing, horseshoes, nature areas, outdoor rentals, parking, pavilion, picnic tables, playground, trails and more.
