OAK CREEK & FRANKLIN HISTORY FRANKLIN
History of the Loomis Pony Express
OAK CREEK
How Oak Creek became a city
On Dec. 16, 1955, Oak Creek officials posed with their certificate of incorporation, which they had acquired just hours earlier.
The story of how Oak Creek became a city began in the early 1950s, when Milwaukee decided to expand its boundaries by annexing adjacent towns. When the new Wisconsin Electric power plant was built on the east side of Oak Creek, it became the impetus for Milwaukee to target Oak Creek for annexation. State law required the bulk of tax revenue generated by a utility would go back to the community where it was located. Oak Creek officials heard of Milwaukee’s intentions, but there was no process that would prevent annexation, so Oak Creek wrote their own. This “Oak Creek Law” allows for incorporation as a city after meeting several conditions, including holding a referendum to confirm the town’s desire to incorporate. When the referendum was about to be held, Milwaukee sent out numerous police officers to serve the town officials with summons to derail the vote. The town officials had to go into hiding to avoid being served and were unable to vote in the very referendum they work so hard to help make Oak Creek a city. Their undercover tactics were successful, and the referendum passed easily. However, Milwaukee tried one last attempt to serve the summons to the town officials by waiting in Madison as the results of the referendum were to be certified. A state senator sympathetic to their cause tucked the paperwork under his jacket and walked right past the officer and his summons, and with that Oak Creek became a city of its own.
Many locals in the area have traveled along Highway 36, more commonly known as Loomis Road. Here’s the story of how it got its name. In the early 1800s, the southwestern portion of Milwaukee County was largely a frontier. As townships began to emerge, a pony express route was established to transport mail from the south side of Milwaukee to far reaching townships in Burlington and Waterford. The route dissected Franklin, which was established as a civil town on Dec. 20, 1839. Three years later, on April 5, 1842, the first government meeting was held at the home of J.C. Loomis. Records indicate that 37 gentlemen attended as “voters,” including two other members of the Loomis family, H.W. and Jonathan. The influence of the Loomis family at that those early meetings along Highway 36 inspired the naming of the trail after those founding fathers. The mail carrier who traveled that pony express trail was a Native American named White Dove. One of his postal stops was a block north of Rawson Avenue at the intersection of 76th Street and Loomis Road. It was the site of Hoppel’s Blacksmith Shop until 1928 when Ed and Marie Stremke bought the property and built one of Franklin’s earliest landmark taverns and dance halls. In tribute to the legendary mail carrier, they named it the White Dove. Through nearly five decades and several owners, the White Dove remained one of Franklin’s most popular establishments for dining, drinking, dancing and graduations. It was finally demolished in the 1970s for the widening of 76th Street and construction of a new southbound on-ramp to Loomis Road. Today the only business that can still trace its origins to Old Loomis Road is the Loomis Center Garage, which was built in 1927 by Ervin Tretow and remains a thirdgeneration family-run operation.
The Loomis Center Garage is the only existing business that can still trace its origins to Old Loomis Road.

The Oak Creek campus of the Milwaukee Area Technical College continues to prepare students to meet the workforce challenges of today and the careers of tomorrow. Residents and visitors to Oak Creek value the investment the city has made in its parks, trails and community events. HEALTH CARE The South Suburban communities are well served by high quality health care facilities and providers. This commitment to a healthy lifestyle is evident by the programs of the health departments and by the many fitness and health care facilities in Oak Creek and Franklin. Families in the South Suburban area have many options for health care. Advocate Aurora Health, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, and Ascension and the Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital offer extensive primary care and specialty services to fit the needs of the community.
HOW A PRIMARY CARE TEAM CAN BE BENEFICIAL FOR YOUR HEALTH
All your symptoms indicate you have a sinus infection. Do you go to a walk-in or urgent care clinic? Set up a virtual visit where you video chat with a provider? Place a call to your doctor’s office? The answer: All these options are available in the area, but you should call your primary care doctor first. Here are three reasons why a primary care team can be beneficial for you:
Your records are in one place Getting established with a primary care team ensures all your records are in one place and are instantly accessible throughout the health network. You’ll save time because your provider team will know you and your health history. No matter the location, they will know all about the medications and supplements you’re taking and are aware of possible interactions with a new prescription.
You’re on the fast track When you need to see a specialist, your primary care team can help coordinate that care. In some cases, the primary care team may be able to save the patient a visit to a specialist, through what is called an electronic consultation, or e-consult. Someone within your primary care team connects with the specialist for the patient and gets the specialist up to speed on the patient’s situation. The specialist makes a recommendation for care, which the primary care team communicates to the patient.
They work to keep you healthy The primary care team’s job is about more than helping you get better when you’re sick – your preventive care is just as important to them.
Find the care you need close to home From the routine to the unexpected, you can count on compassionate, personalized care from care teams at Ascension SE Wisconsin Hospital — Franklin Campus. And it all starts with listening to best understand you and your health concerns.
