renchtown is a historic neighborhood and business district on the northeastern edge of St. Charles. It features an up-and-coming antiques and art district along North Second Street, a treasure trove of French-colonial-style architecture, and a vibrant small-town feeling. Recently, the Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce organized a group of enthusiastic business owners, residents, property owners, and city officials to look at revitalizing the neighborhood. This group has now formally evolved into the Frenchtown Revitalization Partnership and meets regularly at St. Charles City Hall. In 2018, the City of St. Charles contracted with HyettPalma, a consulting firm specializing in the economic enhancement of downtowns and older commercial districts. The same firm also did a study in 2003, but due to changes in residents, businesses and property owners, the committee felt it is important to update the study and give guidance on what should be done to revitalize the district. HyettPalma returned in late-2018 to do an audit of their previous study and to update their recommendations based on new community feedback. The Frenchtown Revitalization Partnership is now in the process of implementing the recommendations and spearheading the revitalization efforts. Keep an eye on Frenchtown. Exciting things are about to happen!

St. Charles County covers 561 square miles of diverse terrain that includes riverbanks, bluffs, forests and planned development. St. Charles County is located at the confluence of the “Mighty” Mississippi River and the “Big Muddy” Missouri River, the fourth-largest river system in the world. St. Charles County served as Missouri’s first state capital from 1821 to 1826 and was the starting point for Lewis and Clark’s famous Corp of Discovery Expedition in 1804. The 10-block, 200-year-old Historic Main Street in St. Charles is Missouri’s first and largest historic district and one of the largest in the United States. In 1970, fewer than 100,000 people lived in St. Charles County. Current U.S. Census estimates place the local population above 395,504, with nearly 110,000 people moving here since 2000. DEVELOPMENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL SERVICES
United Services for Children in St. Peters provides pediatric therapy and early intervention services to children with disabilities and offers support services for their families. The nonprofit organization focuses on children ages birth through age. Whatever the ability of the children, the United Services staff members build on their strengths to fulfill their individual potential for physical, social, emotional and intellectual growth. The outpatient pediatric therapy program delivers clinically based occupational, physical and speech/language therapy in group and individual settings for children age birth through 10 years. The therapy is individualized to the specific needs of children with developmental disabilities. Therapists help children improve fine and gross motor skills and teach them how to pronounce words, listen and communicate. They also help them develop social skills so they can improve their interactions with peers and family. For adults with cognitive or other developmental disabilities, one of the most sought-after agencies is Emmaus Homes. It is a faith-based, nonprofit organization providing around the clock services to more than 275 adults with developmental disabilities in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Its mission is to help clients live as independently as possible in the
community of their choice. The St. Charlesbased nonprofit serves clients in more than 70 homes throughout Franklin, Warren, St. Charles and St. Louis counties. There are many agencies and offices providing assistance for behavioral and addiction-related issues, including: ◆ Preferred Family Healthcare in Lake St. Louis and St. Charles, which provides treatment for substance abuse, addictions and behavioral disorders. ◆ Bridgeway Behavioral Health in St. Charles, which treats men’s and women’s drug and alcohol addiction. ◆ Alternative Behavioral Care in St. Peters, which assists children, adolescents and adults with mental health and substance abuse problems. ◆ CenterPointe Hospital in St. Charles, which provides comprehensive inpatient and residential services for a variety of psychiatric disorders in adults and adolescents. It also has a private adult alcohol and drug abuse treatment program.
AUTISM EDUCATION AND SUPPORT
Kids and adults with autism and behaviors that require support have an ideal place to learn and get support at the Center for Autism Education in O’Fallon. The center was started over 10 years ago as the last resource for many children who struggle with extreme
and challenging behaviors. Since then it has become a leader in this area, earning notice as successfully working with the most challenging of children.
CANCER TREATMENT
St. Charles County residents can receive world-class cancer care close to home at the Siteman Cancer Center facility on the campus of Barnes-Jewish St. Peters Hospital. The Center opened in 2005 and doubled the size of its facilities to 37,000 square feet in 2017. The location offers many adult cancer services, including medical therapy, radiation therapy and education and support programs. Medical and radiation oncologists and surgeons from Washington University provide care at the Center. Other medical staff members include nurse practitioners, oncology-certified nurses, a dietitian, social worker and support personnel.
SENIOR CARE
Because seniors often need increased care, local providers offer a range of options, such as long-term rehabilitation, nursing care, assisted living and memory-care services. At-home assistance is provided through a variety of home health service organizations, including Assistance Home Care and Visiting Angels of Greater St. Charles.

Regional School Districts CITY OF ST. CHARLES SCHOOL DISTRICT
The City of St. Charles School District is building tomorrow’s leaders, while having played an integral role in the city’s rich past. Established in 1846, the district covers 17 square miles, mostly located in St. Charles proper, with a small percentage in St. Peters plus some unincorporated areas. Approximately 4,900 students are enrolled in the district’s six elementary schools (grades Kindergarten-4), intermediate school (grades 5-6), middle school (grades 7-8) and two high schools. In addition, the district features the Lewis and Clark Career Center and the St. Charles County Center for Advanced Professional Studies program, which serves students across St. Charles County. Fort Zumwalt’s mission is to ensure that “students, regardless of ability or economic level, are provided an education in such a positive and safe learning environment that all reach their potential.” The district emphasizes the virtues of democracy, citizenship, self-discipline, work ethic and the need to respect all members of society. Recently, the district opened its 71,000-square-foot Early Childhood Center, which served more than 500 3- to 5-year-old students during the 2017-2018 school year. FRANCIS HOWELL SCHOOL DISTRICT
The Francis Howell School District is one of the highest performing districts in Missouri, and one of the largest. The school district spans 150 square miles and includes the cities of St. Peters, Cottleville, Weldon Spring, Harvester, New Melle, southern portions of St. Charles City and eastern portions of O’Fallon. The district includes three early childhood centers, 10 elementary schools, five middle schools, three high schools, one alternative high school, and one alternative education school, and has an enrollment of more than 18,000 students. The district received a score of 99.3 percent on the “school district report card” from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for the second consecutive year, and has been honored by the College Board with placement on the eighth Annual AP District Honor Roll – one of only three school districts in Missouri to achieve this distinction. Howell School District as the best public school district in St. Charles County in the “Reader’s Choice” awards. Lindenwood University, founded in 1827, is an independent university offering more than 120 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in diverse areas of study and traditional and accelerated formats, including online. hile public schools have plenty of advocates and success stories, some families prefer the atmosphere and philosophy of a private school education. Proponents say private schools with smaller enrollment numbers are better prepared to offer smaller class sizes and more individualized instruction. I
n early-2017, a group of business leaders and educators saw the value of creating a consortium among the local public school districts to provide greater opportunities for students. By the end of 2017, St. Charles County Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS) was formed so districts could partner to provide hands-on learning experiences to students who attend one of the five St. Charles County school districts. The St. Charles County CAPS program provides juniors and seniors with career-oriented experiences through real-world business immersion. These experiences provide students with insights that guide their future studies and careers and ensures that what they are learning
in the classroom is relevant to the workforce. In partnership with local businesses and communities, St. Charles County CAPS seeks
to provide students post-secondary options aligned to their passions and strengths. In the CAPS program, students fast forward into their future – they are immersed in a professional culture, solving real-world problems, using industry tools and are mentored by real employers. CAPS is a half-day program with the remainder of the day spent at the student’s home school. t. Charles County continues to be the fastest-growing county in Missouri and is staking its claim as a great place to live and work, not just as a bedroom community for St. Louis. The median home price – a strong indicator of the health of the housing market – went up by $15,000 in 2017 from a year prior, said Mark Stallman, CEO of St. Charles County Association of Realtors. The median price was $215,000 and homes on the market sold in an average of 11 days, he said. “It’s a good area for growth because we have top-rated schools, great neighborhoods, lots of variety in housing and fabulous recreational opportunities,” Stallman said. The county’s housing stock includes modest starter homes, luxury estates, apartment complexes and retirement-focused developments. Larger municipalities include St. Charles, St. Peters, O’Fallon, Dardenne Prairie, Lake Saint Louis, Wentzville, Cottleville and Weldon Spring, with several of them cited in a 2017 list of the top 50 safest cities in Missouri by the National Council for Home Safety and Security. Also, home security firm SafeWise ranked the safest 20 cities in Missouri based on FBI statistics and announced that two were in St. Charles County – Cottleville (second) and O’Fallon (10th), the only city with more than

50,000 population on the list). One of the most promising developments in the county in the last several years has been the job growth. While many residents still commute into the city, a growing number take a shorter commute to positions nearby at hospitals, General Motors and MasterCard, to name a few. This surge in job activity has helped drive growth in the western part of the county, especially near Wentzville, where there is more open land. St. Charles, recently ranked in Money magazine’s “Best Places to Live” and Where To Retire magazine’s “America’s Best Places to Retire”, offers the largest selection of traditional housing.The city’s historic Main Street area serves as a focal point for the area and tourist draw, with brick-lined streets and many buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the most popular developments in the city is the Streets of St. Charles, a mixeduse venue that offers entertainment, shopping, dining and residences. New luxury apartments here offer a plush urban atmosphere and nine floor plans. Options include balconies, terraces, a heated infinity pool, outdoor kitchen and grilling areas, hot tub, fire pit, business center, clubhouse, 24-hour fitness center complete with tanning bed and even a dog grooming parlor. In St. Peters, there are about 200
neighborhoods to explore, including traditional and upscale developments. The town, which was ranked 15th on a recent Money magazine “Best Places to Live” list, provides plenty of activities for its residents, including the popular Rec-Plex, which includes an ice rink, pools and much more. Wentzville, which is home to a General Motors auto assembly plant, has been one of the fastest growing cities in the state since 2000. It also is home to the county fairgrounds and the Greater St. Louis Renaissance Faire. O’Fallon, which has been ranked several times in the Money magazine “Best Places to Live” list, is the seventh-largest municipality in the state. One of the 2018 highlights for the city is the opening of the new Alligator’s Creek Aquatic Center on Memorial Day weekend. ith greenways, bike trails, indoor activity centers and aquatic parks throughout the area, there are a plethora of opportunities for St. Charles County residents to stay active while also enjoying some of the most beautiful scenery in the area. And when it’s time to unwind, there are plenty of places to enjoy music, shopping and other activities.
PARKS AND ACTIVITIES
Park departments for the county and local municipalities have an abundance of activities to offer for all ages, including group and independent exercise, dance, swimming, gymnastics, BMX biking, fishing, field, rink and court sports, cycling and much more. Also, there are opportunities to participate in community gardens. In 2018, the City of St. Charles opened newly renovated Wapelhorst Park and Blanchette Park aquatic facilities. The Cove at St. Peters, a new aquatic facility behind the Rec-Plex, also opened in 2018.
HIKES AND BIKES
The St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department has more than 45 miles of paved- and natural-surface trails throughout our regional parks system. In addition to hiking and biking in the parks, you can bring your horses to two of the parks – Broemmelsiek Park and Indian Camp Creek Park, both located in the Wentzville area. Katy Trail State Park, which begins in St. Charles and stretches 240 miles across the state, is a favorite among outdoor aficionados for biking, running or hiking along bluffs and wooded areas. There’s also the Great Rivers Greenway, a network of parks and open spaces linked by greenways. The system links the public to rivers, parks and communities in St. Charles County, St. Louis County and the city of St. Louis. Before or during your ride, stop by the Bike Stop Café in St. Charles to check out the bike shop that offers rentals, services and accessories while grabbing a cup of coffee. Another place that will equip you for the trails is Katy Bike Rental, with locations in Defiance and Augusta. This store offers bike, cart and tandem rentals; parts, accessories and apparel; repairs and maintenance; state park souvenirs; and refreshments. In addition, the store offers shuttle service to drive you to the other end of the trail.

month May through October at the Beale Street Concert Series, held at the Streets of St. Charles shopping and entertainment development. Or try Music on the Main every third Wednesday of the month, May through September, in downtown St. Charles. Bring your lawn chairs to this free outdoor concert series, which runs from 5 to 7:30 p.m. along North Main Street. And if you find yourself with a free Thursday, be sure to check out the St. Charles Municipal Band Summer Concert Series in Frontier Park. Finally, after a long work week, you just want to unwind and have a good time. The City of St. Peters offers a free summer concert series – Sunset Fridays at 370 Lakeside Park from May through August. Enjoy great music in a winery-style, date-night atmosphere that makes for a relaxing Friday evening along the lake. The Corporate Pavilion seats more than 300 guests comfortably on outdoor furniture and provides a large courtyard and grassy area for extra seating if you’d like to bring your lawn chairs and blankets. You can also catch live entertainment at many of the wineries in St. Charles County while, in some cases, taking in a beautiful view of the Missouri River Valley. quatic centers, tracks, BMX, archery, fishing, golf and dog parks are just some of the features at parks in the St. Charles County area. There are a plethora of parks through the county, the city of St. Charles and the city of St. Peters. Here are some of the highlights in each area:
CITY OF ST. CHARLES
The City of St. Charles has 22 parks covering over 800 acres and 22-plus miles of pedestrian/ bike trails. Other amenities include three outdoor aquatic facilities, three rentable community buildings, 27 picnic shelters gazebos and pavilions, 18 playgrounds, 22 baseball/softball fields, 19 soccer fields, 10 tennis courts, 10 fishing lakes, an outdoor fitness area and a free dog park. Parks include the following: ◆ Discovery Playground at Jaycee Park: This popular destination is home to an all-inclusive playground with a water feature. The playground utilizes the natural hillside of the park and includes several play areas, swings and slides. ◆ Katy Depot in Frontier Park: This 1893 historic landmark is restored and located along the Katy Trail is a popular, scenic backdrop for wedding and senior photos. ◆ Wapelhorst, Blanchette and McNair aquatic facilities: Recent updates include a new Blanchette Park aquatic facility as well as a renovations and additions to Wapelhorst Park with amenities that include a lazy river, flume slides and a milti-passenger tube slide called the “Boomerango.”
CITY OF ST. PETERS
The City of St. Peters has 25 parks covering almost 1,300 acres and more than 20 miles of pedestrian/bike trails. Other amenities include playgrounds, picnic pavilions, athletic fields, a golf course, an archery range, a BMX track, an outdoor fitness area, a bocce ball court, two wedding gazebos, fishing ponds, basketball and tennis courts, an outdoor pool and dog park. Parks include the following: ◆ The St. Peters Rec-Plex has a natatorium for swimming and diving, an NHL-size ice rink, fitness machines and cardio theater and an indoor track. Rec-Plex South includes two more ice rinks, gymnasium and a multipurpose gym. The recently opened Dynamic Training Center offers a track and new exercise equipment. ◆ City Centre Park has a serene pond with lush landscaping, mature trees and decorative waterfall, as well as a gazebo. For recreation, it offers three baseball diamonds, trails, a pavilion and an inclusive playground. The Cove at St. Peters, a brand new outdoor aquatic center, opened in 2018. ◆ The newest and largest park in St. Peters is 370 Lakeside Park. With more than 300 acres, it includes a 140-acre recreational lake with fishing and boating, a walking trail surrounding the lake and a campground with 75 RV sites and group tent camping. It also has a playground, family picnic areas, sprayground, pavilions, sand volleyball an archery range and the St. Peters Rotary Dog Park. ◆ St. Peter Golf Club will soon feature Water’s Edge Banquet Center, a new banquet center overlooking the large lake that can host events for up to 350 people. Also, a new comfort station was added to provide concessions and restrooms near the center of the golf course.
ST. CHARLES COUNTY
The St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department offers outstanding parks and facilities and a broad range of programs and special events. The county operates 12 parks, including a youth activity park and The Historic Daniel Boone Home. Noteworthy facilities include: ◆ Quail Ridge Lodge in Wentzville: Voted “Best Wedding Destination” by area brides, the cedar lodge banquet facility and gazebo in the park has become a popular place for many couples to
tie the knot. ◆ Quail Ridge Park is 262 acres of rolling pastures, wooded hillsides and rich bottom land near Peruque Creek. At the park’s entrance, be sure to check out the National Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame, or try your hand at a game of horseshoes. ◆ Klondike Park in Augusta was a sand quarry and has been turned into parkland with a lookout bluff that provides views of the Missouri River Valley and the Katy Trail, and features more than 5 miles of trails for hiking and biking. ◆ The Heritage Museum at Heritage Park in St. Peters is a nearly 6,000-square-foot facility that offers free, large displays focusing on local and state history. The current exhibit, “Our Sporting Heritage,” features a Marksman Training simulator, an interactive digital hunting simulator that has the largest video shooting surface in the world and is one of only three of its kind in the United States. ◆ Veteran’s Tribute Park opened to the public in fall 2018. On the property formerly known as Sammelmann Farm in Weldon Spring, the park features a walking and biking trail; a destination playground for children of all abilities that encompasses social/emotional, physical, sensory, cognitive and communication development; an interactive water play area; climbing features; a hill slide; two lakes stocked with fish; an off-leash dog park; picnic shelters and more. Plans for a Memorial Garden with a plaza, monument, and flags to honor all five branches of the armed forces are being finalized at the site. ◆ Broemmelsiek Park near Wentzville is 494 acres of natural beauty, has several large lakes for fishing, specialty shelters to reserve and more than nine miles of multiuse trails for hiking, biking, and equestrian use, plus a 4.7-acre dog park. ◆ The Historic Daniel Boone Home in Defiance represents life in the early 1800s and brings the legacy of Daniel Boone to life. Visitors from across the country can get a glimpse into what life was life for the Boones and others living on the Missouri frontier. ◆ Towne Park near Wentzville features a reconstructed 1800s historical homestead and is home to the only Certified Nature Explore Classroom of its kind in St. Charles County. ◆ Youth Activity Park in Dardenne Prairie features a 33,000-square foot skate course, a 30-foot indoor rock climbing wall and sand volleyball and basketball courts. ◆ College Meadows Park in Cottleville is designed to accommodate citizens of all ages and abilities. It features a nine-hole disc golf course and an outdoor fitness trail that connects with nearby greenways and schools. The three-quarter-mile fitness trail encompasses 10 exercise stations and a fitness machine that’s accessible for wheelchairs. The Rivers

wo of the longest and most celebrated rivers in the country are literally in the backyard of St. Charles County residents – the Mississippi and Missouri. The county’s story is profoundly influenced by both rivers, whether it’s the historical connection to early businesses and residents in the area to current-day recreational use for boating, fishing and other pursuits. The Mississippi, which stretches 2,320 miles north to south from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, is the primary source of drinking water for the region. Its role in the history of the U.S. is well chronicled, from its early exploration to its status as a major transportation artery. The Missouri River, a tributary to the Mississippi, winds across 530,000 square miles in North America, from the Rocky Mountains east to the

basin of the Mississippi. The primary water-focused activity is fishing. The Missouri River is known for its catfish, but there are many others that can be hauled in to make for a productive day on the water. For a more strenuous activity, you can try the Missouri American Water MR340, which is the world’s longest non-stop canoe and kayak race. The event, which takes place in July, is a 340-mile journey across the state, from Kansas City to St. Charles. Participants are allowed 88 hours to complete the course. If a shorter trip is more your style, check out Missouri River Excursions in Defiance. It offers canoe, kayak, or large-raft rentals for those looking to float the Missouri River on half- or full-day trips. To provide easy access to each river, the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department has free boat ramps off the Missouri River at Klondike Park in Augusta and off the Mississippi River at Hideaway Harbor Park in Portage des Sioux. The City of St. Charles Parks & Recreation Department also provides boat access at Blanchette Landing in DuSable Park. The Mississippi is home to a wide array of fish and wildlife and is a major migratory flyway for many birds. Located at Confluence Point State Park is the 4,300-acre Columbia Bottom Conservation Area, which offers hunting, fishing, hiking, biking and bird-watching. Boating and yachting are big here, as evidenced by the number of marinas. The river’s island beaches create a picturesque setting where recreational boaters often throw parties. The Yacht Club of St. Louis sits on the Dardenne Slough. Members enjoy a private pool, two dining rooms, a riverside patio and live music. Further downstream, Palisades Marina & Yacht Club is a public boating and social club in Portage Des Sioux. The shrine to Our Lady of the Rivers can be seen downstream. In addition, John’s Boat Harbor is a full-service marina offering docking, dry storage, repairs and more.

ick a mild day in spring, summer or fall – and in some cases, winter – and you’ll realize how much St. Charles County residents appreciate their outstanding trail and greenway system. You’ll see many bikers, runners and walkers as they connect with paths and roads within the county and neighboring areas. Here is a look at some of the primary path and greenway networks:
GREAT RIVERS GREENWAY
Great Rivers Greenway, a public agency connecting the St. Louis region with greenways, was created about 18 years ago after voters decided to create a sales tax to leave a legacy for future generations by investing in and connecting rivers and parks. Great Rivers Greenway collaborates with partners and communities to build, care for and bring to life a network of greenways, creating healthy habitats and watersheds along the way. The organization serves 2 million residents throughout a 1,200 square mile district of St. Louis City, St. Louis County and St. Charles County. The most notable recent trail improvement was the opening of two new pedestrian bridges in St. Charles County in April 2018. The bridges are part of the recent expansion of the Centennial Greenway, which provides a new connection to parks, schools, businesses and neighborhoods for thousands of residents on both sides of these busy highways. The project extends the existing 2.2-mile Centennial Greenway north, crossing both highways 364 and 94 via two pedestrian bridges where it connects to Old Highway 94 near Muegge Road. In addition to the paved trail and bridges, the greenway also has a scenic overlook landscaped with native plants and seating for people to stop and rest. This section of the Centennial Greenway extends from the Katy Trail to the St. Charles County Heritage Museum. The new bridges spur off the greenway near the Heritage Museum. AUGUST A. BUSCH MEMORIAL CONSERVATION AREA
The nearly 7,000-acre August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area serves as the St. Louis regional Missouri Department of Conservation office and includes a visitor center. Fishing and hunting licenses are available here for use in roughly 30 lakes and ponds. Boat rentals are a big draw. Other outdoors attractions include hiking, picnicking, birdwatching areas, a shooting range, an archery range and prairie restoration spots.
KATY TRAIL STATE PARK
Another popular spot is the Katy Trail, a 240-mile recreation rail trail that runs from Machens – a former town in St. Charles County – to Clinton, about 75 miles southeast of Kansas City. Here, outdoor enthusiasts can bike, run or hike along river bluffs and wooded areas.
CITY AND COUNTY PARKS AND GREENWAYS
One of the most popular natural areas in St. Charles County is the Dardenne Greenway, which winds along Dardenne Creek and links hundreds of acres of parks and many neighborhoods. The greenway has a paved trail that provides access to athletic fields, a dog park, St. Charles Community College and many other areas. The south end of the Greenway is at Legacy Park in Cottleville and the north end is near Mexico Road in St. Peters. There are many trails to check out within the St. Charles County Parks System, including Lost Valley Trail in the Weldon Spring Conservation Area, located near Chesterfield. It features a Little Femme Osage Creek and a crystal-clear spring, and visitors often cross paths with deer and turkeys. Other trails not to be missed include Matson Hill Park Trail in Defiance and Augusta’s Klondike Park Trial, which features bluffs and a gorgeous lake. Multi-use trails in St. Charles County that permit horseback riding as well as hiking and biking are open at Broemmelsiek Park and Indian Camp Creek Park. The City of St. Charles offers trails of various lengths and surfaces in 11 parks, in addition to the paved 5.45-mile hike and bike Boschert Greenway (https://greatriversgreenway.org/greenway/boschertgreenway/). Also, there are three existing segments of the Centennial Greenway: ◆ The easternmost section, Centennial Greenway: Forest Park to Washington University to Vernon, is one 1.5 miles, paved. ◆ Further west, Centennial Greenway: Shaw Park to Olive travels along I-170, linking four communities; Clayton, Ladue, University City and Olivette. The intersection where the greenway crosses Delmar can be very confusing for trail users to navigate, but organizers are working to improve it. ◆ In St. Charles County, Centennial Greenway: Katy Trail to Heritage Museum is a 2.3-mile segment (paved) that provides a vital link between the Katy Trail and St. Charles Heritage Museum Park to the west. It also connects to St. Louis County’s 4.5-mile paved Creve Coeur Connector trail extending from Creve Coeur Park. GSTCCC.COM

ajor, well-known retailers and restaurants coexist with independent establishments in St. Charles County, providing many different opportunities as you shop and dine in the area. Here is a look at the major shopping, dining and entertainment locations in the county:
MID RIVERS MALL
You can fill up an entire shopping day with a trip to Mid Rivers Mall in St. Peters, which includes more than 140 specialty stores including Bath & Body Works, Charlotte Russe, The Children’s Place, Express, Francesca’s, LOFT, New York & Company Outlet, a 14-screen Marcus Theatre, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Best Buy. The mall, which is located along Interstate 70, recently made significant upgrades both inside and outside of the property. They added fashion retailer H&M, Snow Factory featuring Thai pan-fry ice cream rolls, and a “Pop-Up Shop” which provides opportunities for local boutiques to try their business in a mall setting one week at a time.
SHOPPES AT MID RIVERS
The new shopping center is the largest of its kind built in the county since 2008 and includes many popular shops, including Ulta Beauty, Home Goods, Burlington and Academy Sports + Outdoor. Also in St. Peters, take a look at Beer Sauce Shop for the hard-to-buy for guy on your list. It includes a large selection of craft beer, BBQ sauces, rubs and grilling accessories.
THE MEADOWS
The Meadows, a mixed-use development in Lake Saint Louis, is one St. Charles County’s newer shopping destinations and home to more than 30 shops and restaurants. The Meadows aims to blend national retailers with culturally distinctive merchandise in a welcoming, family and community-focused environment. This open-air plaza includes a farmers’ market, summer music and movie series, street performances and concerts.
HISTORIC MAIN STREET ST. CHARLES
For a unique shopping trip, head to St. Charles’ 14-block Main Street in one of Missouri’s largest historic districts. The brick street leads to more than 75 unique shops and 25 restaurants and pubs.
STREETS OF ST. CHARLES
The Streets of St. Charles is slated to be a distinctive 1 million-squarefoot mixed-use community with retail, dining, entertainment, hospitality, residential and offices components in a town square environment. The development is anchored by two hotels – the Drury Plaza Hotel, which opened in fall 2017, and Tru by Hilton, which will be ready by June 2018 – and AMC Theatres. One of the main spots to grab a bite here is Firebirds Wood-Fired Grill. It offers wood-fired steaks, seafood, specialty cocktails and select wines. Firebirds touts top-notch service paired with upscale dining at a modest price. For Mexican fare, plan a stop at recently opened Mission Taco Joint. Also, look for First Watch – A Daytime Café. Other key tenants include Bar Louie, PF Chang’s, Pieology, Wasabi Sushi Bar, U-Swirl/Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and Orangetheory Fitness. In addition, there are several distinctive shops in the development, including Olivinos, a purveyor of specialty olive oils, balsamic vinegars, and wine; Cherry Blow Dry Bar, a salon providing glam styling services at affordable prices; and MOD and Brulee Boutique, which carry women’s clothing.

Construction for the next phase of Streets of St. Charles will open in 2019 and add 20,000 square feet of prime retail space and 40,000 square feet of office space. Narwhal’s Crafted Urban Ice, featuring frozen cocktails, will be the first business to open in the new addition.
HISTORIC FRENCHTOWN DISTRICT
The Historic Frenchtown District is a haven for antique lovers, with a half-dozen unique stores dotting the beautiful landscape of this neighborhood. Shoppers can find authentic furniture, glassware, linens and antiques in a variety of styles. There’s also an eclectic mix of other shops, including bridal boutiques, salons, florists and photographers. Recently, a group led by the Greater St. Charles County Chamber of Commerce began spearheading an effort to bring new life to this district.
DINING HIGHLIGHTS
New restaurants open continually in St. Charles County, while traditional establishments continue to draw in loyal customers. The Shack in O’Fallon is an example of a new, fun concept for a restaurant. It features a lively décor, witty sayings and illustrations throughout the building and humorous names for some of the dishes. Local favorite Syberg’s, serving some of the region’s best wings, pizza, shark bites and drinks, opened their seventh location in the region in St. Peters. Llywelyns Pub’s staff is dedicated to providing a warm and inviting gathering place for the community while serving up a Celtic-inspired menu that includes Irish and Scottish selections. The St. Charles location is in the old National Bank building, and the pub pays homage by offering seating in the old vault. In addition, there’s a large patio overlooking the Missouri River. Llywelyns recently opened a location in St Peters as well. Also in St. Peters is Shamrocks Pub & Grill, which provides “American Food with an Irish Attitude.” The New Town community in St. Charles is home to Pangea, a new restaurant run by chef-owner Jessie Gilroy, who is gaining notice in the St. Louis dining community. If environmental sustainability is important to you, you’ll feel good about supporting Prasino, an eco-friendly restaurant that was named one of the area’s top 10 most-booked restaurants by St. Louis Business Journal. This dining establishment serves hormone- and antibiotic-free meats, sustainable seafood and organic produce and eggs with a farm-totable philosophy. Finally, there’s nothing like homemade donuts, especially at a familyowned shop like Old Town Donuts in Cottleville or Donut King in St. Charles.

rewers and winemakers in St. Charles County have become a must-taste and see destination for local residents and visitors from around the country. Much of the local winemaking activity is focused in Augusta and Defiance, including establishments that provide scenic views from bluffs that overlook the river. Visiting multiple wineries could be part of a day trip, as Augusta is also near many nearby scenic locations, such as the Katy Trail, Daniel Boone Home and the Lewis & Clark Trail. The wineries include: Quarry Wine Garden in New Melle is a new winery that provides tastes of Missouri and California wines. It serves lunch and dinner and often hosts musical performers on the weekends. Defiance Ridge Vineyards is at the beginning of the Missouri Wine Country corridor near Highway 94. The 42-acre property includes a vineyard, lake and lush garden landscape as well as breathtaking views of the Missouri River Valley. Mount Pleasant Estates, an Augusta winery, grows its grapes locally and is the largest purveyor of Augusta Appellation wine. Guests can enjoy a meal at the Appellation Café with a
view that overlooks the Missouri River Valley. Balducci Vineyards is led by the Balducci family, which has roots in California winemaking and opened in 1987 in Augusta. The award-winning establishment hosts entertainment on weekends and is the site for many special events. The number of microbreweries across the country has exploded and St. Charles County is no different. Here’s a look at several of them: Third Wheel Brewing, the first local brewery in St. Peters, delivers an inviting culture of beer, food and friends. Housed in a 10,000-square-foot facility, the brewery and tasting room provide a wide-open space anchored with a large U-shaped bar and plenty of taps. Trailhead Brewing Company, a full-service brewery in St. Charles, offers a full menu of food designed to complement the beer, but you don’t have to be a beer lover to enjoy a night at Trailhead. Two Plumbers Brewery + Arcade, a small brewery in St. Charles that brews many different styles of beer, is open to 21 and older clientele. It also has more than 40 arcade and pinball games inside the taproom. Exit 6 Pub and Brewery takes its craft beers
seriously. The Cottleville establishment offers 70 craft beers, 23 beers on tap and five made on premises, but no “macro” beers. No food is available, but you can bring it in or order in. Good News Brewing Company is the classic story of homebrewers realizing their dreams. Good News in O’Fallon offers a small but delicious beer menu, but is becoming more known for its wood-fired pizzas. Missouri Beer Company is a production brewery and tap room located at the site of the original O’Fallon Brewing Company. Friendship Brewing Company offers at least 25 rotating taps made up of both house beers as well as local, regional, national and international guest taps. It has become a staple of Wentzville. The William K Busch Brewing Company recently unveiled plans for a new brewery and distillery in St. Charles County. Billy Busch whose ancestral legacy includes founders of Anheuser-Busch Brewery, is president & CEO. Construction is expected to be complete in 2020. Local distilleries have also established themselves in the county, including St. Louis Distillery (known for Cardinal Sin Vodka) in St. Charles and Distillery of Defiance, famous for its Judgment Tree Vodka.

estivals in the St. Charles County area are an eclectic mix of the traditional, historic and delightfully offbeat. From Oktoberfest and Riverfest to St. Louis Renaissance Fair and the growing Legends & Lanterns Halloween fest, there’s no shortage of entertainment throughout the year.
ST. CHARLES RIVERFEST
You know it’s summer when St. Charles Riverfest rolls around. The festival, which takes place around the Independence Day holiday, is highlighted by a July 4 parade. It also includes food, beverage and product vendor booths, fireworks and live music at night.
FESTIVAL OF THE LITTLE HILLS
Crafts, specialty food and entertainment fill historic Main Street and Frontier Park in St. Charles for three days every August during the Festival of the Little Hills, also known as Fête des Petites Côtes. Hundreds of crafters and free shuttles are on hand for this popular event. The Festival of the Little Hills Scholarship Foundation awards multiple $1,000 scholarships annually.
ST. LOUIS RENAISSANCE FAIRE
Jousting knights, interactive characters and comedy, music and magic performances are some of the highlights of the St. Louis Renaissance Faire, a longstanding event that brings the adventure, excitement and spirit of the renaissance to life. Set in a wooded, 16th-century French village called Petit Lyon, the festival also includes village shops with crafts and artisan demonstrations. For kids, there’s also a petting zoo, games and free activities, while adults can enjoy beer and wine at three pubs.
DANIEL BOONE HOMEBREW FESTIVAL
The historic Daniel Boone Home at Lindenwood Park in Defiance is the venue for a celebration of local brewers. Guests 21 years and older are invited to enjoy beer samples, live music and food for purchase.
CELEBRATE ST. PETERS
Each September, Celebrate St. Peters features a variety of activities, including bands, carnival rides, games, craft booths, free kids’ activities, fireworks and vendors. The event includes a race around the lake at 370 Lakeside Park, as well as a fun run/walk.
OKTOBERFEST
St. Charles Oktoberfest takes place during the traditional September time period in beautiful Frontier Park off Riverside Drive, sandwiched

between the Missouri River and the downtown. Visitors can view or participate in a parade, brat-eating contest, charity walk, wiener dog race, fun run and vintage car show. Bands from Germany as well as local musicians provide entertainment.
LEGENDS & LANTERNS: A “SPIRITED” JOURNEY THROUGH HALLOWEEN HISTORY
During the three weekends preceding Halloween, historic Main Street in downtown St. Charles is taken over by “playful paranormal poltergeists from parts unknown,” according to festival organizers. Witches and ghouls will offer tricks more than treats, however, and are out for fun during this fast-growing festival that turns St. Charles into a ghost town. The festival provides the vintage charm from Halloweens past, from the early 1900s, to the historical customs of the Druids and Victorians, to the ethereal depictions of American ghost stories and Brothers Grimm fairy tales. The festival features scarecrows, hayrides through history and ghostly guests on historic Main Street.
BLESSING OF THE FLEET/PARADE OF BOATS
This annual boat parade and blessing in Portage des Sioux draws many spectators as the “Upper Pool” and “Lower Pool” parades wind along and eventually merge, culminating at the Our Lady of the Rivers Shrine. Many boats are decorated as teams compete for prizes based on the year’s theme.
CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
You can experience the holiday traditions of yesteryear during the annual St. Charles festival, where Victorian carolers sing Christmas favorites and classic characters from holiday legends around the world visit. Festivities take place from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve.

he arts, sports and nightlife all come together to keep St. Charles County residents and visitors entertained all year round.
ARTS
Several organizations and museums keep a strong arts tradition alive in St. Charles County. The Foundry Art Centre’s goal is to connect people with the arts through exhibitions, studio artists, performances and education. It hosts free performances, concerts, adult and children’s programs, summer camps and even a monthly book club in St. Charles. In addition, the center has a monthly “living art” series that offers free art-making events, led by local artists, to highlight the importance of art to personal well-being. Missouri Artists on Main art gallery is located in the beautiful California House – a former stage coach stop – in St. Charles. At MAOM, there’s a variety of mediums and styles ranging from contemporary to traditional. The gallery features the work of more than Missouri 40 artists, plus classes to boot. In addition, the gallery hosts wine and cheese receptions with talks given by artists. The J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts at Lindenwood University includes two theaters and an art gallery. The facility, which is used by performing arts and communications students, features classrooms, a costume shop, dance studios and faculty offices. The center also is home to national touring shows. The driving force behind public awareness of area arts activities is the St. Charles County Arts Council. The council sponsors meetings, exhibits, workshops, cooperative displays and art shows. St. Peters’ Cultural Arts Centre at City Hall welcomes artists and musicians of all ages and skill levels. The facility houses a performing arts theater, thematic art shows, exhibits, rentable gallery space, art and fencing classes, a music and voice lab, summer art camps, dance troops and a Saturday Writers Group. Gallery space artwork rotates every two months. The Donald D. Shook Fine Arts Building on the campus of St. Charles Community College includes the Center Stage Theatre and Young People’s Theatre productions. For live shows other than theater, The Family Arena in St. Charles assembles a diverse schedule of sporting events and concerts. Performers include renowned names in rock, heavy metal, country and oldies.

On Main Street in St. Charles there are more than 25 restaurants to choose from, ranging from BBQ to fondue to more formal dining.
One of the top restaurants is Bella Vino Wine Bar and Tapas. Llywelyn’s Pub, which is located in a renovated historic bank, offers Celtic food, music and shuffleboard while Tony’s on Main Street includes everything from ribeyes to garlic shrimp to grilled chicken clubs. The Old Mill Stream Inn Restaurant and Beer Garden often features live music and Hendricks is known for its award-winning barbecue in the restored waterworks building. The region’s newest shopping and dining destination is Streets of St. Charles, which has a movie theater, with hotels on the way. Some of the hotspots to grab some nosh or dessert at are Firebirds Wood-Fired Grill, Tucanos Brazilian Grill, Bar Louie, PF Chang’s, Prasino, Pieology, Wasabi Sushi Bar and U-Swirl/Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. Mission Taco Joint has great margaritas and an excellent atmosphere, and don’t miss the street corn! For those feeling lucky, Ameristar Casino Resort Spa in St. Charles has slot and video machines and live game tables in its 24-hour facility. Try your hand at blackjack, craps, roulette, baccarat and much more. The professional sports scene is dominated by the St. Louis Cardinals and Blues; however, sports fans can also catch St. Louis Ambush
indoor soccer and St. Louis Stampede arena football (beginning in 2019) at The Family Arena in St. Charles. For minor league baseball, check out the River City Rascals baseball team, based in O’Fallon. The Rascals are a member of the West Division of the Frontier League and play home games at CarShield Field. Saint Louis Zoo www.stlzoo.org Recently voted America’s Top Free Attraction and, for the second year in a row, Best Zoo, the Saint Louis Zoo is a favorite for locals and visitors alike. The Saint Louis Zoo is dedicated to connecting people to animals. There are more than 17,000 animals to see – many of them rare and endangered. There is plenty to do and see at the zoo with more than 90 acres of exhibits, attractions, shopping and dining. The recent additions of Sea Lion Sound, McDonnell Polar Bear Point, and Centene Grizzly Ridge make the zoo more popular than ever. Visitors can also take guided tours with interactive displays, ride on the Emerson Zooline Railroad, or enjoy the children’s petting zoo.

Grant’s Farm www.GrantsFarm.com Grant’s Farm is the 281-acre ancestral home of the Busch family, named for Ulysses S. Grant who originally worked a portion of the land. The farm is a refuge for more than 900 animals, representing more than 100 different species. Encounter animals through personal feeding experiences at Grant’s Farm. Visit the majestic Budweiser Clydesdales and take carousel rides. Shop for collectibles and souvenirs, catch a show or ride a pony or camel before eating onsite. Open mid-April through October, admission is free and many attraction fees are minimal. Aligned with national and state academic standards, the museum’s exhibits engage children in a variety of handson educational experiences and promote important 21st-century skills such as creativity, critical thinking and collaboration. Missouri Botanical Garden & Butterfly House www.missouribotanicalgarden.org Founded in 1859, the 79-acre Missouri Botanical Garden is the nation’s oldest botanical garden in continuous operation and an oasis in the city of St. Louis. Today, 153 years after opening, the Garden is a National Historic Landmark and a center for science, conservation, education and horticultural display. Numerous events are held here each year. Located in Faust Park, The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House is an 8,000-square-foot glass
conservatory lushly planted with nearly 100 species of exotic flowering tropical plants and more than 60 species of the world’s most beautiful butterflies in free flight. Watch a butterfly emerge from a chrysalis or interact with them in the Butterfly Garden. Take a class, shop or plan a private party on the Emerson Lakeside Terrace. City Museum www.citymuseum.org Housed in the 600,000-square-foot former International Shoe Company, the museum is an eclectic mixture of children’s playground, funhouse, surrealistic pavilion and architectural marvel made out of unique, found objects. Founder and internationally acclaimed artist Bob Cassilly and his crew of 20 artisans have constructed the museum from the very stuff of the city; and, as a result, it has urban roots deeper than any other institutions’. Reaching no farther than municipal borders for its reclaimed building materials, City Museum boasts features such as old chimneys, salvaged bridges, construction cranes, miles of tile, and even two abandoned planes! With nine heart-pounding roller coasters, they feature over 22,700 feet of roller coaster track. PROFESSIONAL SPORTS Professional sports teams in St. Louis give fans plenty to cheer about. The St. Louis Cardinals are 11-time World Series winners and perennial postseason contenders, making them one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball history. Since entering the National Hockey League as expansion team in 1967, the St. Louis Blues have employed some of the greatest players in ice hockey history. Home games are played at the recently renovated Enterprise Center. NEIGHBORHOODS Just short drives away are many nifty neighborhoods.
