For those in the greater Statesville area considering their options after high school, there are many pathways that lead to success. A traditional college education is an excellent way to land a dream job, but it’s certainly not the only road to the top. College may not be for everyone, but education is, and Statesville and the surrounding area offers students an array of options. A student’s career path begins early on when they start to discover personal strengths, weaknesses, talents and desires. Iredell-Statesville Schools is dedicated to helping students and their parents explore the career options available to them. The school system is working with many other organizations on the Workforce Development Blueprint, which is an effort to create awareness in both students and the community at large regarding the types of careers available in the area. The groups involved in the Workforce Development Blueprint are helping produce this magazine in hand. The publication will showcase employees who work at various local companies and will include Snapcodes that link to videos where those employees describe what their jobs are and the training and education that was required. The magazine will be distributed to all students in grades seven through nine.

encourages everyone to be open to nontraditional career paths. “I see the value of getting an education here, getting a community college education here, and going on to university, but at the same time I see kids getting into the technical fields. The thing I really want young

to complete a four year degree, saving a significant amount of money, or they may choose to begin a career with an Associate in Applied Science degree, diploma, certificate or other short-term training. The North Carolina Manufacturing Institute offers a national certification in manufacturing. “The certified production technical course is a fantastic first step for someone to enter manufacturing,” said Deb Lazenby, business services coordinator for North Carolina Manufacturing Institute. The course introduces students to manufacturing from a variety of perspectives, including maintenance, safety, quality and customer service.

There are more than 300 manufacturing facilities in the area, employing over 23,000 people. North Carolina Manufacturing Institute is a collaboration between multiple organizations and many of the member companies offer tuition reimbursement as well as assistance in choosing a career path, Lazenby said. Technical jobs are in high demand, and Universal Technical Institute helps students take advantage of that demand. An average of more than 100,000 new transportation technicians will be needed each year for the foreseeable future. Universal Technical Institute has formed partnerships

BUSINESS IS BOOMING The industry of advanced manufacturing is thriving in Statesville. In fact, according to the Statesville Regional Development, the top 10 employers in the area include several advanced manufacturing companies, such as Doosan Portable Power, Kewaunee Scientific and Pratt Industries. This is thanks, in part, to the skilled workforce Statesville boasts and the amount of workforce development available to those looking to enter the field. Doosan Portable Power, which manufactures products such as generators, air compressors and light towers, made Statesville its home in 2008. “Originally, Statesville was chosen due to its proximity of our workforce that was transferring in from Mocksville to the east and Davidson to the south, but we’ve grown in Statesville due to access to a great workforce and the strong support from the community, including Mitchell Community College,” said Lance Mathern, vice president, Doosan Portable Power. The field of advanced manufacturing is seeing a rise in job availability in Statesville. “Our business is booming,” Mathern said. “We added 50 jobs in the month of February alone, many of which were in areas of advanced manufacturing, including advanced machining.” Mitchell Community College also offers workforce development for those looking to build skills in the areas of welding, electrical technology and more, areas that Mathern said Doosan looks for when hiring new employees. “We offer and provide on-the-job training in each of these areas,” Mathern said. “We also work closely with our local vocational school (CATS), the president of Career & Technical Education for Iredell County, Mitchell Community College and our local Chamber of Commerce to set eighth

Just a few include the March of Dimes, local food banks, the United Way and Statesville’s Relay for Life — the annual, cancer-awareness fundraiser. “We raised $16,000 for cancer patients this year,” Smith said. A recent partnership with Winston-based PMG Research is enabling patients to participate in clinical trials, helping them receive early and affordable cutting-edge treatments. “PMG runs clinical trials for major pharmaceutical companies,” Smith said. “We’ve contracted with them to start a research division of Piedmont Healthcare. This is important for many reasons. One, it provides treatment options to patients much earlier in the process for some conditions, and, it opens the door for those who could not otherwise afford treatment.” Current trials underway in Statesboro include studies of high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and relapsing multiple sclerosis. Another exciting partnership where Piedmont HealthCare is fulfilling a vital role and creating a positive impact on health is the Piedmont Community Health Collaborative. “The collaborative is an Accountable Care Organization consisting of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers, coming together and voluntarily giving coordinated, high-quality care to Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries,” Smith said. “It’s a joint venture between Piedmont HealthCare and Iredell Health System, targeting the Medicare population, providing quality, low-cost care. Patients can still chose their doctors, and over time receive better care as a result of being a part of an integrated system of care that’s overseen by an expert health care team.” Piedmont HealthCare supports a very wide range
