DISCOVER A REWARDING WAY OF LIFE HERE AT HOME

For those in the greater Statesville area considering their options after high school, there are many pathways that lead to success. A traditional college education is an excellent way to land a dream job, but it’s certainly not the only road to the top. College may not be for everyone, but education is, and Statesville and the surrounding area offers students an array of options. A student’s career path begins early on when they start to discover personal strengths, weaknesses, talents and desires. Iredell-Statesville Schools is dedicated to helping students and their parents explore the career options available to them. The school system is working with many other organizations on the Workforce Development Blueprint, which is an effort to create awareness in both students and the community at large regarding the types of careers available in the area. The groups involved in the Workforce Development Blueprint are helping produce this magazine in hand. The publication will showcase employees who work at various local companies and will include Snapcodes that link to videos where those employees describe what their jobs are and the training and education that was required. The magazine will be distributed to all students in grades seven through nine.

“The thing I really want young people to see is that you need to decide what your life is about and what you can do with the skill set you have” —Craig Morrow, Local Business Owner

One resident who has personal experience with the many career path options in the area is business owner Craig Morrow. As an alumnus of Mitchell Community College, and as a person who has changed career paths, Marrow Continued on page 14

16 CAREER CLUSTERS AND THEIR CAREER PATHWAYS

Career clusters are groups of occupations in the same field of work that require similar skills. Each cluster contains several smaller groups called career pathways that connect to educational programs, industries, and careers. While a career cluster paints a broad picture of a group of occupations, a pathway helps you focus on and develop a clear, more informed educational plan over time. The structure of the National Career Clusters Framework of 16 career clusters and 73 related career pathways supports your growing career awareness and exploration.

With more than 2 million student members combined, Career and Technical Student Organizations have a definite impact on student’s overall collage and career readiness.

Students who participate in CTSOS demonstrate higher levels of academic engagement and motivation, civic engagement, career self-efficacy and employability skills than other students.

According to the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education, participating in leadership and professional development activities in a CTSO raises students’ educational aspirations.

Students who participate in school organizations in 10th grade have higher grade point averages and are more likely to be enrolled in college at 21 than other students.

The North Carolina Manufacturing Institute offers a national certification in manufacturing. “The certified production technical course is a fantastic first step for someone to enter manufacturing,” said Deb Lazenby, business services coordinator for North Carolina Manufacturing Institute. The course introduces students to manufacturing from a variety of perspectives, including maintenance, safety, quality and customer service.

people to see is that you need to decide what your life is about and what you can do with the skill set you have” Morrow said. Mitchell Community College is an excellent choice for those who are looking for flexibility and an institution that is dedicated to building strong relationships in the business world. Mitchell “strives to meet the needs of employers in Iredell County and beyond, bridging the skills gap and ensuring our students are competitive in a modern and fast-changing workforce,” said Megan Suber, public information officer. Students at Mitchell Community College have an array of career-path choices. They may choose to complete their general education requirements at Mitchell Community College, then transfer to another institution

There are more than 300 manufacturing facilities in the area, employing over 23,000 people. North Carolina Manufacturing Institute is a collaboration between multiple organizations and many of the member companies offer tuition reimbursement as well as assistance in choosing a career path, Lazenby said. Technical jobs are in high demand, and Universal Technical Institute helps students take advantage of that demand. An average of more than 100,000 new transportation technicians will be needed each year for the foreseeable future. Universal Technical Institute has formed partnerships

BUSINESS IS BOOMING The industry of advanced manufacturing is thriving in Statesville. In fact, according to the Statesville Regional Development, the top 10 employers in the area include several advanced manufacturing companies, such as Doosan Portable Power, Kewaunee Scientific and Pratt Industries. This is thanks, in part, to the skilled workforce Statesville boasts and the amount of workforce development available to those looking to enter the field. Doosan Portable Power, which manufactures products such as generators, air compressors and light towers, made Statesville its home in 2008. “Originally, Statesville was chosen due to its proximity of our workforce that was transferring in from Mocksville to the east and Davidson to the south, but we’ve grown in Statesville due to access to a great workforce and the strong support from the community, including Mitchell Community College,” said Lance Mathern, vice president, Doosan Portable Power. The field of advanced manufacturing is seeing a rise in job availability in Statesville. “Our business is booming,” Mathern said. “We added 50 jobs in the month of February alone, many of which were in areas of advanced manufacturing, including advanced machining.” Mitchell Community College also offers workforce development for those looking to build skills in the areas of welding, electrical technology and more, areas that Mathern said Doosan looks for when hiring new employees. “We offer and provide on-the-job training in each of these areas,” Mathern said. “We also work closely with our local vocational school (CATS), the president of Career & Technical Education for Iredell County, Mitchell Community College and our local Chamber of Commerce to set eighth

Kewaunee Scientific Corporation also sponsors North Carolina Manufacturing Institute and has called this corner of North Carolina home for more than 50 years. Kewaunee designs, manufactures and installs products such as movable workstations, biological safety cabinets and fume hoods for schools, universities, laboratories and government facilities, to name a few. In addition to the corporate headquarters, Kewaunee also has three manufacturing facilities in Statesville, where they manufacture products for both domestic and international markets. When it comes to their workforce, Kewaunee looks for skills including mechanical

“The proximity to multiple interstates, as well as city and county tax incentives, [is what brought Pratt to Statesville],” said Jonathan Adams, plant manager.

Pratt Industries, the fifth largest corrugated packaging company in America, specializes in several areas, including clean energy, recycling, paper mills and corrugating. With locations across the world, Pratt came to Statesville for its ideal location.

The Statesville plant specializes in corrugating, which focuses on finding ways to reduce paper weights through packing solutions that are made from 100 percent recycled materials. Skills that Pratt looks for when hiring include forklift operating, CDL driving and machine maintenance. Also located in Statesville, HEXPOL Compounding, a

GROWING SECTOR SOARS IN STATESVILLE Keeping the community healthy and well, Statesville is home to a robust community of health care providers. Administering excellent and innovative medical care and service, Piedmont HealthCare is putting patients first with compassionate care. With more than 50 locations and nearly 200 physicians and providers across multiple specialties, Piedmont HealthCare is one of the largest multispecialty groups in North Carolina and the Southeast. “We’re investing in patients and advancing our physicians and facilities every day, and we’re shifting views about health care,” said Piedmont HealthCare CEO Jeffrey W. Smith. “Emphasizing a team approach, we aim to provide value to our customers and patients, keeping them well and out of hospitals and emergency rooms before illness occurs. That’s the value we’re delivering to patients.” Piedmont HealthCare is accomplishing that goal in leaps and bounds, building on its successful culture of collaboration, cooperation and communication. Consistent integration and communication among staff and physicians facilitates excellent patient care. And building multiple strategic partnerships throughout the community, the collaborations provide patients with even greater value as Piedmont —Piedmont HealthCare CEO Jeffrey W. Smith HealthCare promotes awareness of healthy habits and lifestyles that contribute to an excellent quality of life.

“Patients can still chose their doctors, and over time receive better care as a result of being a part of an integrated system of care that’s overseen by an expert health care team.”

and broad scope of organizations in its community outreach. Just a few include the March of Dimes, local food banks, the United Way and Statesville’s Relay for Life — the annual, cancer-awareness fundraiser. “We raised $16,000 for cancer patients this year,” Smith said. The community aspect of Piedmont HealthCare’s work is well noticed: It was recently recognized as the 2016 Practice of the Year at the North Carolina Medical Group Management Association’s Annual Conference. The award honored Piedmont HealthCare’s significant contributions to its community, patients and staff through volunteer work, fundraisers, staff wellness programs, community clean-ups and community screenings and education.

A recent partnership with Winston-based PMG Research is enabling patients to participate in clinical trials, helping them receive early and affordable cutting-edge treatments. “PMG runs clinical trials for major pharmaceutical companies,” Smith said. “We’ve contracted with them to start a research division of Piedmont Healthcare. This is important for many reasons. One, it provides treatment options to patients much earlier in the process for some conditions, and, it opens the door for those who could not otherwise afford treatment.” Current trials underway in Statesboro include studies of high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and relapsing multiple sclerosis. Another exciting partnership where Piedmont HealthCare is fulfilling a vital role and creating a positive impact on health is the Piedmont Community Health Collaborative. “The collaborative is an Accountable Care Organization consisting of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers, coming together and voluntarily giving coordinated, high-quality care to Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries,” Smith said. “It’s a joint venture between Piedmont HealthCare and Iredell Health System, targeting the Medicare population, providing quality, low-cost care. Patients can still chose their doctors, and over time receive better care as a result of being a part of an integrated system of care that’s overseen by an expert health care team.” Piedmont HealthCare supports a very wide range

In addition to Piedmont HealthCare, Statesville is served by an array of outstanding health care facilities and allied health care service providers. The Davis Medical Group is a highly qualified multispecialty group of medical professionals, dedicated to improving the lives of all patients. Davis Medical Group is affiliated with Davis Regional Medical Center, a 130-bed, full-service hospital with more than 300 physicians on staff, serving Statesville and surrounding counties. The Iredell Health System is a 247-bed nonprofit medical facility with approximately 260 physicians on staff. Iredell Health System provides a highly recognized diabetes management program, and maintains a certified Community Cancer Program by the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer. With so many facilities, jobs in health care are abundant, too. Health care is one of the fastestgrowing job sectors in North Carolina, with health care and social assistance comprising the state’s largest industry by employment. According to the North Carolina Bureau of Labor Statistics job projections for 2014-2024, the sector is projected to add 135,000 jobs in a decade. n
