DEAR FRIENDS:

to expand and be a unique and special community for residents and visitors alike.

A

s Mayor and on behalf of the City Council, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the City of Chicago.

The Streeterville Chamber of Commerce keeps a wealth of information on all things Streeterville and is always willing to help those who are interested in learning more about one of Chicago’s most distinguished communities. The quality of life in Streeterville has been ranked among the highest in the metropolitan area and I am pleased that you have chosen our city as a place to do business and live. As you read this community guide you will find more interesting facts about Streeterville and learn more about the City of Chicago and its residents.

The businesses and residents in the Streeterville neighborhood of Chicago maintain a great deal of pride in their community. Streeterville has consistently upheld a reputation for some of the best retail and dining experiences in the nation. Michigan Avenue, known as the Magnificent Mile, provides an array of exclusive restaurants, retail, 5-star hotels, and office and residential developments. Navy Pier, which recently underwent a major renovation and the number one tourist destination in the Midwest, is located in Streeterville and attracts millions of visitors each year. Northwestern Hospital, Lurie Children’s Memorial Hospital, and the largest Ronald McDonald House in the world also call Streeterville home. With the near completion of 465 North Park, a new luxury apartment complex, Streeterville continues

Thank you for choosing Chicago. I am confident that you will like what you see. Best wishes for much continued success. Sincerely,

I

am proud to partner with the Streeterville Chamber to help serve Chicago’s business community.

The Navy Pier Flyover, a dedicated bike and pedestrian path nearing completion in 2018, will extend from the Chicago River Bridge to Jane Addams Park, and provide a safe and scenic route along the Lakefront Trail.

Streeterville offers residents and visitors a unique combination of Chicago’s best restaurants, hotels, shopping destinations, hospitals, residential buildings and cultural attractions.

I am grateful for the important service the Streeterville Chamber of Commerce provides to their membership. I look forward to our work in 2018, to support local businesses and help drive future investment, job creation and growth in this important downtown community.

This year, I have ordered a number of infrastructure improvements for the neighborhood. Lighting upgrades on Columbus Drive have replaced old, dim street lights. To improve safety and enhance the pedestrian experience, we have installed LED “piggy-back” poles, equipped with two street light heads to illuminate both the street and sidewalk.

The Place to Learn, Play & Explore

As the neighborhood continues to thrive and grow, with unprecedented investment and new development, I am working hard to ensure those developments are responsible and offer benefits to the broader community.

Sincerely,

Brendan Reilly Brendan Reilly Alderman, Alderman 42nd Ward

A transformation in the retail scene

treeterville continues to develop quickly with new buildings rising and populating the skyline, adding more residential, commercial and institutional growth to our neighborhood.

is emerging on Streeterville’s major retail corridors like Michigan Ave. These stores include the new Apple store at the river’s edge, the new Tesla Store at 900 N. Michigan and the upcoming Starbucks Roastery that will be a unique experience for the Magnificent Mile.

The major transformation that the neighborhood is witnessing is bringing with it another, less visible but equally exciting, major change in the retail scene. With the increase in neighborhood density, foot traffic and curb appeal, new retailers, especially restaurants, are finding the neighborhood east of Michigan Avenue more appealing than ever before and prompting higher prices for retail space.

This year, 2018, will be equally exciting from a retail standpoint. New restaurants like Hampton Social will open early in the year and major new retail spaces will be added to the market, including large spaces at several of the new residential buildings. These new spaces will further establish Illinois Street and Grand Avenue as major retail corridors connecting Michigan Avenue, Navy Pier and the lakefront. The close proximity of all this retail creates a very walkable community to get from all that Michigan Avenue has to offer, to the beach and lakefront with restaurants and retail in between.

Here is a look at some of the major additions to the neighborhood: Over the past year, more than 15,000 square feet of new restaurant space has been added to the neighborhood. That includes all types of food from fast food to fast casual and higher end/white tablecloth restaurants. All these new restaurants are adding more diversity to the food scene in Streeterville and establishing the neighborhood as a destination for quality food.

Finally, these changes in retail along with the new residential, hotel and institutional developments are signaling a future that is very bright and exciting for Streeterville. Our neighborhood is a perfect blend of urban amenities, recreational, educational and employment opportunities thereby making Streeterville the epitome of livability. – By Malek Abdulsamad & Gail Spreen

TOURISM

“Come one, come all” is your personal invitation from Navy Pier, Chicago’s nonprofit, mission-driven cultural district designed to inspire, educate and connect communities.

L

ocated on Lake Michigan and stretching more than six city blocks, Navy Pier offers free year-round accessibility to its guests and forms an elegant canvas for the unexpected. In wake of its Fifth Third Bank Centennial Celebration, Navy Pier underwent a transformative renovation that included the opening of Polk Bros Park, a newly renovated 13-acre green park located at the west entrance of Navy Pier. The park boasts the Polk Bros Fountain and Plaza and the Polk Bros Park Performance Lawns.

“While the physical enhancements are stunning, the programmatic transformation at Navy Pier has been equally exciting and integral in ensuring the Pier remains a world-class destination,” said Lydia JordanParnell, PR coordinator at Navy Pier.

The gorgeous, open South Dock was also completed along with the grand Wave Wall staircase leading to Pier Park, where you’ll find the new Centennial Wheel. Already enjoyed by more than 1 million adventurers, the Centennial Wheel’s enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas offer yearround excitement. The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare Theater introduces a new trend in theater architecture to the city. The dynamic design features nine mobile audience “towers.” The theater focuses on resourceful, sustainable and adaptive design and flexible configuration developed by world-class architectural teams.

IL-STV-CW-17 Design.indd 16

Not content to rest on its laurels, Navy Pier, one of the top cultural destinations in the Midwest welcoming more than 9 million guests annually, is powering into its second century with vigor. The new Food Experience exudes a strong contemporary vibe reflective of Chicago’s spirit of culinary innovation. The Pier has strategically collaborated with some of Chicago’s culinary giants to bring best-inChicago dining options to its guests. Navy Pier is currently working to bring the vision of the new and improved Family Pavilion to life. Drawing on Chicago authenticity, the renovation will enhance the guest experience with improved features and new partnerships to better accommodate guests

Navy Pier has achieved Gold certification under the Sustainable SITES Initiative (SITES) rating system, the first project to earn this level of certification under SITES v2. Phase 1’s Gold certification demonstrates NPI’s undeniable commitment to the environment through expanded green spaces, improved pedestrian access, energy efficiency, innovative storm water management, use of recycled local materials and much more. SITES was developed through the efforts of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin and the United States Botanic Garden.

The Pier offers more than 250 free dynamic and eclectic community programs, events, classes and performances. In 2018, free experiences include the third annual Pier Pride Celebration; Quinceañera celebrations; Water Flicks, an outdoor movie series; Water Colors, a jazz series; and several fitness and wellness programs.

In 2019, a 224-room boutique hotel adjacent to Festival Hall will provide guests with the most spectacular views of the city, lake and the Pier. The hotel will also anchor a new dining and entertainment district. For more information, visit www.navypier.org. 16

t’s all about location in this city. Where you live and where you set up your business says a lot about who you are and the type of business you operate. In this regard, Streeterville can help convey your message by offering a variety of choices, many more than a first-time visitor to the city might foresee.

CHESTNUT STREET

DELAWARE PLACE

Stroll down Chestnut Street and you will see some of Chicago’s famous, restaurants, hotels and churches. On the east side of Chestnut is The John Hancock Center featuring The Tilt, a 360-degree observatory deck. Broadway Chicago Theater is across the street from the Hancock. Head west on Chestnut and on the corner is the Verizon store. Residents and visitors can also choose to attend religious services at Fourth Presbyterian Church, 126 E. Chestnut St. The church has earned esteem throughout the neighborhood because although it is small, the depth of its community outreach, education and charitable work is tremendous. Looking for a place to dine? Look no further than Ditka’s for impeccable service. Upstairs at Ditka’s you can listen to the music of Johnny Vincent, performing during the later part of the week and weekends. xecutive Chef Massimiliano Campagnini’s career journey has been a passionate pursuit of artistry and excellence at his craft. He is a native Italian from Bologna, the gastronomic capital of Italy, and he cooked in renowned kitchens of Europe before he arrived in the United States in 1999.

“There was no question about what I was going to do with my life,” Campagnini said. “My grandmother and mother were always in the kitchen preparing excellent meals, and I was joyfully included in the kitchen.” At age 14, he started at one of the best culinary schools in Europe, Ippsar that love and passion for food are the two requisites for becoming a great chef. “I learned this early and it was reinforced by my teachers and the chefs with whom I worked after I finished culinary school,” he said. “You can develop good technical skill in the kitchen and that will earn you respect. But it is the feeling you put into your dishes that keeps your guests coming back time and time again. Love and passion enable you to produce ‘mamma’s food’ which, in Italy, is the best food of all.”

One of the Campagnini’s mentors was Stefano Donegaglia; he had the opportunity to meet and work with him at an early age. “Chef Stefano elevated my sense of myself as a culinary professional. I learned that I could really impact people through my culinary art as long as I put love into my food, and I also learned that artistry isn’t enough. You have to run an efficient operation, as well. “Campagnini is proud of the fact that he won first prize in a culinary competition while in school. “I had to prepare a dish from famous Italian chef Artusi-stuffed quail with zucchini and carrots Parisienne,” he said. After finishing school, he wanted to broaden his professional horizons and

staged at a number of fine hotels on the Adriatic coast of Italy, at a time when there was a food renaissance in this part of the country. He then worked in Bologna for two years, Paris for one year and worked his way to the original center of Shakespearean theater in London. In 1999, Campagnini came to Chicago. Via Emilia in Lincoln Park and La Donna in Andersonville were the first neighborhoods to enjoy Campagnini’s unique and delicious meals. In 2002, he met Benny Siddu and has been with the restaurateur ever since at Volare Chicago. At Volare, guests return and request their favorite dish and say, “‘this tastes the same as it did last time.’ I know that I’ve really accomplished something. Being consistent is not easy, but it’s what I strive for every single day,” Campagnini said.
