s vice mayor of the City of Chicago and alderman of downtown Chicago’s 42nd Ward, I would like to thank the Streeterville Chamber of Commerce for their continued support of the many diverse businesses in this thriving neighborhood. The Streeterville Chamber is a key partner in advocating on behalf of Chicago’s business community, working to foster a pro-business environment that encourages future investment, job creation and economic growth. Streeterville is home to many of Chicago’s best restaurants, world-class hotels, upscale stores, cutting-edge medical facilities, universities, and beloved cultural attractions including the Midwest’s number one tourist destination, Navy Pier. This year, we have made a number of improvements to direct Streeterville’s visitors to Navy Pier. Additional stops were added to Navy Pier’s Free Trolley Route, which connects the Pier with other popular tourist attractions including the Art Institute, Chicago Riverwalk, State Street and Millennium Park. At my request, Navy Pier installed pedestrian wayfinding signs at key locations in Streeterville and the New Eastside neighborhood to enhance the tourist experience while directing pedestrians to Chicago’s Lakefront and NavyPier. In addition, we are making long-term investments to the

Navy Pier itself is undergoing a major redevelopment, with a new welcome pavilion in Polk Bros. Park completed this year, and future improvements planned for Navy Pier’s East End, which will include an elevated walkway and an impressive water feature, as well as new restaurants, and a new hotel. These exciting improvements will be a great benefit Streeterville as a whole, and help cultivate interactions between visitors, local residents and the business community. Thanks to the Streeterville Chamber of Commerce’s continued hard work, this area remains one of the most vibrant mixed-use neighborhoods in all of Chicago. The Streeterville Chamber is an excellent resource for its business members and is constantly striving to enhance this very important downtown community.

treeterville has been growing fast, construction sites are occupying nearly every other corner in the neighborhood and new buildings are rising quickly adding more residential, commercial and institutional growth to our neighborhood.

Although the whole neighborhood is busy, some locations have been busier than others. Here is a quick look at the busiest corridors in the neighborhood.

Illinois Street has been transforming quickly with the opening of the Lofts at River East and the construction of two new apartment buildings, 465 N. Park Drive and 220 E. Illinois that will add approximately 800 new apartments to the busy corridor. Also, the sale of the Tribune parcel will bring more development to NBC plaza, potentially more apartments and hotel rooms. Grand Avenue has also been a busy corridor for development with the construction of Streeterville’s first luxury condo/apartment tower since the recession, One Bennett Park, and the opening of Moment, a new apartment building at the corner of Grand Avenue and McClurg Court.

Besides the fast-growing South Streeterville, Central and North Streeterville have also been growing more steadily, attracting more institutional growth in addition to new restaurants, bars, entertainment and other attractions. We can’t talk about the transformation of Streeterville without mentioning the transformation of Navy Pier. Phase one of Centennial Vision is complete and the Pier is more cultural and vibrant than ever before. Phase two is underway with plans for a new hotel, family pavilion and improvements to the east end of the Pier. The transformation of Navy Pier will bring more visitors and more vibrancy to our streets. Finally, although the neighborhood might feel like one giant construction site today, the future is very bright and exciting! Two years down the road, Streeterville will be celebrating amazing new architecture, brand-new parks and a highly improved streetscape which will improve walkability, add more eyes on the street and enhance the quality of life in Streeterville!

Navy Pier continues to celebrate its 100th Anniversary in 2017

avy Pier, the Midwest’s top leisure destination, was originally opened as a shipping and recreational facility in 1916. Now 100 years later, the iconic landmark serves as so much more. With more than 50 acres of parks, restaurants, retail shops, sightseeing and dining cruises, museums and more, Navy Pier offers tourists and locals alike a vast array of entertainment and cultural experiences.

as the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series, Navy Pier’s 100th Birthday Party, the first PRIDE celebration outside of the Lakeview neighborhood, PEPSI Tall Ships Chicago, the 16th Annual Fifth Third Bank Winter WonderFest and more. We look forward to continuing the festivities in 2017” So, what can guests expect from Navy Pier in 2017? As part of the Fifth Third Bank Centennial Celebration, the Pier will introduce new, free cultural programming and welcome back some of their most popular events – such as Neighborhoods of the World, Aon Summer Fireworks, the second annual PRIDE event, a spectacular 4th of July celebration and more. Navy Pier is also set to unveil a major art installation and host a very special exhibit, to be announced in early 2017.

Drawing nearly nine million guests each year, Navy Pier is the top-‐visited destination in the Midwest. According to Travel and Leisure Magazine, the Pier ranks 11th in the world in terms of attendance, just ahead of Disneyland in Anaheim and following the Louvre in Paris. “We welcomed 8.6 million guests in 2015 and are on track to surpass that number in 2016,” said Payal Patel, public relations specialist at Navy Pier.

With the first phase of redevelopment now complete, Navy Pier will look to continue the second phase in the coming year as they round out Polk Bros Park with the addition of two new performance lawns for outdoor concerts and events, begin renovations in the Family Pavilion, open the completed Navy Pier IMAX® at AMC, and introduce The Yard – Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s new, innovative performance venue. The Yard’s first production is slated for Fall 2017.

Perhaps the Pier’s 100th anniversary celebration had something to do with the boost in attendance. The Fifth Third Bank Centennial Celebration, commemorating the historic landmark’s 100th year, kicked off in Summer 2016 and is set to continue through Fall 2017. “Navy Pier recently celebrated its 100th anniversary with a robust lineup of special events and by undergoing a pier-‐wide physical and programmatic transformation,” said Patel. “In 2016, we commemorated the Pier’s historic milestone by opening our grand, new Centennial Wheel and the Fountain and Plaza in Polk Bros Park, and by hosting major events, such

streeterville CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IL-STV-CW-16 Design.indd 16

In the years to come, Navy Pier will continue to work with its architectural partners as James Corner Field Operations and Gensler to redevelop the East End Plaza and make other enhancements as the Pier looks ahead to its next 100 years. 16

We want to be the doctors you trust to coordinate your hearing health with the rest of your health They offer and utilize every manufacturer, model and type of hearing aid/device. STREETERVILLE CHEF

RYAN ROTONDO Chef: Pizzeria Uno 29 E. Ohio St. • Chicago, IL 60611

S

ince 1943, Pizzeria Uno has kept a Chicago tradition alive, making a deep dish pizza that locals and tourists love, a thick-crust pizza covered with cheese that stretches as tall as Navy Pier’s Centennial Wheel and sausage that only meat-loving Chicago could provide. One of the chefs who prepares the true Chicago creation is Ryan Rotondo, who has 15 years in the pizza making industry. Ryan says they try to maintain the same level of craftsmanship put into this pizza since the restaurant began.

Information: (312) 321-1000 • www.unos.com

“Deep dish is one of those things with one foot in the past and one in the future. It’s got an interesting history, and it’s been fun for me to respect that history,” he said.

before topping with a sauce made simply with San Marzano tomatoes. While some diners may order only cheese, Ryan knows a true Chicagoan orders a pizza covered with sausage patty, provided by the same Chicago company, the Anichini Brothers Inc.

The process has stayed the same, making the dough using all-purpose flour and

“They make sure we get the freshest stock of sausage available. It’s not ground more than 24 hours before it hits our shelves. If you’re looking for the best Chicago style sausage in Chicago you’ve got to come to Uno’s,” he said.

“Even though I’ve been in Chicago only a fraction of that time I still see people coming up to me saying this pizza has not changed in the 60 years I’ve been coming here,” he said. Looking at its history, Ryan said this pizza began during the Great Depression era when people made it to feed a lot of people with one large affordable dish. After World War II, the pizza became a different symbol, showcasing how much food we can bring to our table. And through the popularity of fast food, they have continued the same tradition and remained popular.

while that’s happening it’s great to be with friends,” he said. “You can have great conversation.”

Ryan acknowledges patience is needed as guests may need to wait about 45 minutes after ordering for their pizza to arrive at their table. But Ryan says the pizza is the centerpiece of this full dining experience, which includes giving guests a chance to enjoy time together.

Ryan is happy not only to prepare a pizza for diners to eat at the restaurant. But he’s also happy to show you how to make one at home. At 8:45 a.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, he leads a class where students learn the history of deep dish and how to recreate a scaled down pizza at home, including secrets to the process. Locals and tourists alike can sign up on the restaurant’s website, www.unos.com/cookingclasses.

“It’s the kind of pizza you order when you’re out with very good friends. It’s taking a long time to get this great product, and

“What people tend to be very surprised about is you can cook this kind of pizza in a regular home oven,” he said.
