Chairman Welcome
W
elcome to the 2016-2017 Greater Toms River Chamber of Commerce Membership Directory.
This directory marks an important time in our chamber’s history. Over the last 18 months, we have transitioned to a new CEO, a new physical location, a new name, a new website and new partnerships both inside Ocean County and out. The 390+ businesses represented in these pages are at the ground floor of a chamber resurgence harkening back to the days of the early 1980s when the Toms River Chamber stood as the loudest voice for business throughout Ocean County as the county grew at a meteoric rate. Today, this group looks to position Toms River at the forefront of economic growth at the Jersey Shore. Through initiatives like our economic development committee’s Business Summits, our marketing and technology committee’s #WeAreTR campaign and our membership committee’s Member Connect, we are helping solidify existing relationships, forge new relationships and search outside of our immediate geographic area for game changing business initiatives. Over these next two years, the Greater Toms River Chamber of Commerce looks to continue unifying Ocean County through
ventures like the newly formed Ocean County Commerce Coalition, a coalition of professional chambers founded by leadership of our chamber along with Lakewood, Brick and Southern Ocean County. Closer to home, we continue to work towards more meaningful partnerships with the Toms River Business Improvement District and our friends across the bridges in Beachwood, Bayville, Seaside and beyond. If you don’t see a local business that you frequent (or work for or own) within these pages, you can help further the movement. Reach out and ask the question, “Why aren’t you part of the movement at the Greater Toms River Chamber?” Then reach out to me or our CEO, Noelle Lotano, and we’ll do the rest. Jeremy Grunin Chairman
Chamber CEO’s Welcome
A tomsriverchamber.com
s the CEO of the Greater Toms River Chamber of Commerce, I have the distinct honor of representing approximately 400 businesses - and counting - in our outstanding community.
4
Before coming to the chamber in December 2014, I was the owner of several small businesses for the first 15 years of my career. One of those companies allowed me to be a concierge, of sorts, for my clients. I was dedicated to internally improving our efficiency, enhancing events and programs and taking the utmost care of everyone I interacted with. The years I spent doing so perfectly positioned me in the place that I am today - where my goal is to provide a high-level of service and drive economic success for our members. As we set our sights on a pro-business agenda in 2016 and beyond through our strategic plan, there is much to look forward to. We have recently formed strong partnerships with our neighboring chambers to bring a unified voice to Ocean County. We have reignited a relationship with our school system to ensure that our students are not only workforce-ready, but also at the top of recruiters’ lists as the best and brightest among the talent. We have teamed up with nationally recognized organizations to develop a plan to ensure families want to stay in, and relocate to, the greater Toms River area. I love our community. Not only was I raised here - going through the Toms River Regional School District, attending Ocean County College during my senior year of high school and while home for the summers
NJ-TOM-CD-16 FINAL.indd 4
from my first college in Virginia, and ultimately graduating from Georgian Court University – but also I have chosen to raise my own family here. I choose to live here because of the undeniable spirit of our residents; because of the beauty that abounds; because of our high quality of life. I work here for all the same reasons. I know that I would be hard-pressed to find a community of people who believe so deeply in our vision - people who believe that we need to leverage our coastal beauty and rich history to drive a new era of economic innovation and growth. In conclusion, as we approach our chamber’s 100th anniversary, we will continue to strive to be one of the best chambers in the state. I thank you for your support and trust, and I wish you all of the greatest successes available in life and in business. #WeAreTR. Noelle W. Lotano CEO

Mayor’s Welcome
W
e warmly welcome you to Toms River Township and are pleased you have chosen to be a part of our community.
As the eighth largest municipality in New Jersey, Toms River prides itself on its 249-year-old history that has laid the foundation for our township to become the seat of Ocean County, which is the second largest county in New Jersey. Town Hall is the center of an attractive government complex, with the Ocean County Superior Courthouse and main branch of the county library system and downtown business district all adjacent to our municipal center. Our ideal geography place our municipality midway between New York, Philadelphia and a short distance from Atlantic City. Since the mid 1800’s, Toms River’s rural farming, fishing and boat-building area has grown from a 2,700 populace to today’s 95,000 residents. Toms River is not only a wonderful place to live, but also an attractive place to visit, with miles of Atlantic Ocean on Toms River’s Ortley and Normandy beaches. Aside from oceanfront fun, Toms River’s Silverton section and Toms River itself spill into the Barnegat Bay, making our township a fine boating and fishing haven with marinas and inlets to satisfy the avid fisherman and boater. Along with waterfront activities, our municipally owned 18-hole golf course, indoor and outdoor ice skating rinks and numerous playgrounds, parks, sport fields and recreational facilities make our township one-of-a-kind.
Our Senior Center has a staff dedicated to providing a full complement of activities and events for active residents over the age of 60. Our Youth Center offers a selection of summer camps for children, as well as a variety of outdoor community events. While providing residents and visitors with entertaining opportunities, safety is Toms River’s first priority with an outstanding police department, the largest police agency in Ocean County. The department is committed to excellence, professionalism and the use of technology to best serve the residents, visitors and businesses in Toms River Township. If you’re already a part of our community, thank you. If you’re considering relocating your home or business to Toms River - or simply thinking about a visit -- please do. You won’t be disappointed. As mayor, I welcome you to our town and invite you to discover the many great things Toms River has to offer. Sincerely, Thomas F. Kelaher, Mayor Toms River

Local SEO Basics: HOW TO PRIME YOUR BUSINESS FOR LOCAL SEARCH
B
usiness owners are always working to achieve their next goal and searching for the perfect strategy to get there. Unfortunately, all too often in this process, search engine optimization (SEO) can be overlooked or even forgotten. SEO is the backbone to any marketing campaign, and to neglect it for any reason will inevitably hurt your business.
relevance. Important keywords in your URL will yield a higher search result than non-specific URLs that do not contain the keyword the user was searching for to begin with.
CHOOSE YOUR KEYWORDS CAREFULLY A common pitfall in improving SEO is not selecting the right keywords. Consider the popularity of the keyword and its relevance to the services you offer, as well as the audience you plan to reach. There are a number of free and premium tools to help you assess which keywords are popular with your tar-get audience.
UTILIZE GOOGLE+ LOCAL LISTINGS & ONLINE REVIEWS
Less than 25 percent of search engine users go past the first page of a Google search. If you’re not paying attention, you might not rank high enough in SEO to even make the first page. Here are some SEO maintenance tips you can integrate into that perfect strategy, making it that much better.
BLOG CONSISTENTLY
tomsriverchamber.com
One of the best ways to improve your website’s SEO is by blogging regularly. Blogs are like episodes of a television show. To keep viewers tuning into the show, the producer needs to create regularly scheduled episodes. If the show takes a long hiatus, viewers will likely lose interest by the time it re-turns.
8
A blog is no different. Once a business finds its target audience, it is important to cater to them on a regular basis, keeping their interest. In terms of improving your SEO, regular blog posts filled with relevant content means more page indexes on a Google search archive. Each blog post means one more opportunity for a potential customer to find your website.
CREATE A CLEAR URL STRUCTURE: Readability and relevance are two major considerations when choosing a URL. A readable URL allows a visitor to know exactly what type of product or service they are clicking on before arriving at your home page. It also encourages new visitors to your website and is important to the Google SEO algorithm. If a human cannot read your URL, then neither can a computer, therefore it will not rank as high on a Google search. Readability goes hand-in-hand with
NJ-TOM-CD-16 FINAL.indd 8
Google+ local listings serve as a geographic representation of your business on a map in relation to your competitors. They will almost certainly get you to page one because local listings are displayed first in a Google search. To make the most of your Google+ local listing, be thorough. Include an address for your business so it can be found easily via GPS. List one contact number, which should be the same as the one on your home page. Include facilities offered, hours of operation, etc. as a complete local business profile will rank higher in Google searches than partial profiles. Also, a customer using Google Maps will be more likely to click on a business that has positive reviews. Customer feedback is incredibly valuable in making your business stand out against competitors.

RECOGNIZE THE POWER OF LOCAL LINKS Make a deep search of relevant local community organizations and companies and interact with them to earn some .org or .edu links which are of high value. These organizations can be: ■ Local chamber of commerce ■ Nonprofit organizations ■ Media organizations ■ Service providers ■ Educational institutions ■ Charities
There are many factors involved in creating a website that will drive your business successfully into the future. SEO is definitely at the top of that list. It is often said that you
only have eight seconds online to grab a potential client’s attention. It takes longer than that to scroll to the bottom of the first page of a Google search, so not only do you want to be on the first page, you want to be at the top of it. Economic Development ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
T
he mission of the Economic Development Committee of the GTRCC, is to identify and advocate for the necessary steps to create sustainable economic growth in the Greater Toms River Area. When I heard the revitalized Greater Toms River Chamber was setting up an economic development committee (EDC), I was excited. Although I work in investment management now, I grew up in a family business and I know firsthand the importance of creating economic growth and how in turn it fosters community development. Finding ways of fostering real economic growth by working with our members to develop and grow links to the wider U.S. and international economy, is essential to our ongoing health as a community. Economic growth is the lifeblood of any successful town and having a chance to contribute to that process in some small way, with my colleagues on the EDC, is a privilege.
tomsriverchamber.com
We started to meet in October 2015, to talk about how we would organize ourselves around the areas of greatest importance. We have many strengths on which to build in Toms River, not least of which is an emergent group of business leaders who want to work
10
through the chamber to make Toms River a better place to live for themselves and for their children. In fact, it’s this strong sense of community and family that is chief among the many resources Toms River can claim to offer the world, as people look for a better quality of life in the highly mobile society in which we live. The families that grew our town into what it is today did so as they sought a better quality of life for their families, outside the cities of the 1960s and 1970s. That sense of “family over all” is in Toms River’s DNA and it remains so as we seek new economic growth in the 21st century. Our physical resources add hugely to the quality of life available here; we are fortunate to have a beautiful wide river, a scenic bay and the Atlantic Ocean surrounding us as we go about our daily lives. There are probably thousands of chambers of commerce around the United States that would kill for their town to have a beautiful river, bay or ocean, so they could attract new economic activity. Having all three on our doorstep puts us streets ahead of the majority of the country in terms of quality of life and potential for growth. In addition to these foundations, the main strengths we have identified on the EDC lie in our proximity to New York City and Philadelphia, our progressive K-12 educators, our constantly evolving community college at OCC/Kean, our competitive housing costs and property taxes relative to the overpopulated north of the state, the wisdom and economic power of the second largest senior population in the country (after Dade County, Florida), our rapidly growing health care system and a joint military base of vital strategic importance on our doorstep, where 40,000 people go about their lives in the service of our country.

So how are we going to use this list of enviable resources to foster economic growth in Toms River? To start with, we’ve organized ourselves into the three areas we see of vital importance to economic growth in Toms River: tourism, health and technology and education. Chamber members in each area are giving up their time and expertise to look at new ways to foster improvements in our community from organizing customer service programs in our tourist industry in conjunction with OCC, to engaging with our educational leaders about the high school and third-level skills our children need to learn to build successful careers without leaving our town upon graduation. In addition, we have started to collaborate with the Market Shift team at NJ Institute of Innovation and Purdue University, Indiana. We have started a process with this team that seeks to utilize our existing human and physical resources in a new way. In short, to work with what we already have to create a platform for new companies to create growth and new employment opportunities. The resources that are being allocated to the GRTCC for this project are a wonderful opportunity for our town, as the leaders we are engaging with have been part of total economic redevelopment projects in Charleston, South Carolina; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Youngstown, Ohio; and Oklahoma City, to name a few. These were all successful revitalization projects, supported by Purdue University and led from the ground up by a local community leadership who decided they were going to develop the true potential of their towns. At this early stage, it looks like it will suit the self-starters I have seen in Toms River down to the ground. We just had our first strategy session on February 16th, 2016, and we are happy to report that it was attended by leaders from education, banking, property, our military, engineering companies, veteran’s representatives, healthcare and local government. Watch this space because if you have an idea for a company, or want to develop one you already own, if you want to grow and use your skills in a new way, then we are going to have a platform for you to build your company and your life in Toms River. My colleagues on the EDC are looking forward to assisting you on your journey. Mark Cunningham Global Wealth Management, Merrill Lynch Co-Chair, Economic Development Committee, GTRCC

Education
A
good, quality education is in full reach for anyone attending Ocean County College (OCC) in Toms River. The state’s first county college remains a landmark and premier educational institution. Established in 1964, OCC offers everything you would want in a two-year community college and more. Almost 9,000 full- and part-time commuter students currently attend to earn associate degrees, certificates and licensures in day, evening, weekend, online and distance learning classes. OCC offers an Associate in Arts (AA), an Associate in Science (AS) and the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) to prepare students for bachelor’s degree programs or to help move them forward in their careers. Associate degrees are available in business, the social sciences, nursing and the health sciences, the arts, humanities, science, technology/computers, engineering and mathematics. For those looking to polish skills for immediate employment, OCC offers the Certificate of Completion and Certificate of Proficiency in programs as varied as accounting and addictions counseling to small business management and visual communications. What’s more, OCC affords students a flexible learning environment amid 275 acres of beautiful wooded land. Students can take classes on OCC’s main campus in Toms River, at OCC’s Southern Education Center in Manahawkin (20 minutes south) and at various designated sites throughout the county to better serve the needs of residents. OCC’s e-Learning online courses allow students to complete an Associate in Applied Science degree in business; an Associate in Arts degree in liberal arts; or an Associate in Science degree in business administration,
computer science with options in game development and design, information systems, and information technology, criminal justice, engineering, environmental science, general studies, homeland security and public service. Students also have the option of taking individual online classes, too, in business, computers, education, humanities, literature, mathematics, science, social science and more. Another way OCC demonstrates its commitment to excellence is through its faculty. Many have had work published in books and distinguished journals. They present regularly at national and international conferences in their chosen fields, and thanks to small class sizes, they regularly offer students one-on-one attention. Moreover, many classroom activities have expanded to include study abroad programs, with some seminars being offered in Morocco, France, England, Spain and Mexico. A clear extension of the greater community, OCC awards college credit for certain high school classes held at the Ocean County Vocational Technical School. Its Bridge Program helps to prepare high school students for standardized college testing, and OCC offers embedded classes at select high schools to give students the opportunity to earn college credit even before they reach college. OCC also has an established partnership with Kean University that allows residents to complete upper division courses required for certain Kean bachelor’s degree programs and specific graduate
programs (master’s and doctoral-level) offered on OCC’s Toms River campus. Outside of classes, OCC students stay plugged in and active on campus. Many join student groups and organizations, while others find their place participating in any of the 14 athletic programs offered, including men’s baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s softball, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. If that were not enough, the Toms River campus is also home to the state-of-the-art ow Planetarium and the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts, which attracts performing acts and talents of national and international acclaim. Whether it is to polish old skills or to enhance new ones, Ocean County College offers a world-class education that is affordable with flexible scheduling in a wide variety of subjects. With outstanding faculty members and a school built to propel the next generation forward, it is no surprise that this institution continues to be a model of academic success. ■

Arts & Entertainment
T
oms River sets the pace for the steady stream of visitors who travel to the Jersey Shore to find a vibrant and rich arts and entertainment scene. Looking for great art, music, street festivals and museums? This area, located an hour and a half south of New York City and an hour east of Philadelphia, is loaded with them.
folksy crooner Aaron Neville; Broadway actor Adam Pascal; the Vienna Boys’ Choir; legendary singer Art Garfunkel; instrumentalists Canadian Brass and the acapella singing group, Home Free, just to name a few. “One of the goals of the Grunin Center was to bring in artists, keep prices reasonable, and when we bring them in to see if they would do workshops and lectures, and share their craft,” Wilson said. A good example of these goals came into play when former New York Yankees player and guitarist Bernie Williams visited. Not only did he and his band provide an outstanding performance, but he also led a master class for students, as others have too. The result? “Our students love it,” Wilson noted.

Toms River is home to the ever-growing Chili and Salsa Cook-off in May, which is also when the Downtown Farmers Market sprouts up. Come summer, guests enjoy the vintage car showcase known as Cruisin’ Downtown in beautiful downtown Toms River. The annual Summer in the Streets festival paints the town with a splash of excitement. By fall, the Harvest Arts Festival is ripe with creativity, and the area’s Halloween Parade is a howling success.
12
But one of the biggest draws is the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts, located on the campus of Ocean County College (OCC). This posh, 460-seat facility in Toms River received a major facelift in 2014 following a $5.7 million endowment, and it has since welcomed an impressive, star-studded roster of guests. The theater hosts dinner shows, meet-and-greet receptions, master classes for OCC students and welcomes top-notch performances for the entire community to enjoy. “We try to find folks who elevate Ocean County, world class artists to show that Toms River is a hub for arts and culture,” said Mark Wilson, the Grunin Center’s director of cultural affairs. Headliners at the Grunin Center have included Peter Yarrow of the singing trio Peter Paul & Mary;
NJ-TOM-CD-16 FINAL.indd 12
This October, the Grunin Center will explore the education of girls around the world. The goal of the six-week project is to engage OCC students and residents in a dialogue about the cultural values that affect girls’ access to primary and secondary education. During that time, participants can attend workshops, meet distinguished guests, view relevant art and films and hear music that all touch on the theme of “A Historical and Contemporary Perspective: Education for Girls around the World.” “Being that we are on a college campus, a part of our mission is to help educate students and the community,” Wilson said. And by all accounts, the Grunin Center is doing just that. For tickets information, call the Grunin Center Box Office at (732) 2550500 or visit www.grunincenter.org.
Another gem among gems is the Robert J. Novins Planetarium, which is also housed at Ocean County College. A virtual 3D video space, this state-of-the-art planetarium is the only in the state with an optomechanical star projector for crisp, realistic star fields. Come visit regularly for scheduled programming, star watches and telescope workshops sure to leave the young and the young-at-heart in awe. For recorded show information, call (732) 255-0342 or for a show schedule and latest on planetarium events, visit www.ocean. edu. What’s more, Toms River boasts two movie cinemas, AMC Loews Seacourt 10 and Marquee Cinemas Orchard 10, and several area museums, a few highlighted below: Insectropolis: The Bugseum of New Jersey. Making Memories ON THE JERSEY SHORE
V
acation time at last! While you spend some time glancing through this guide to find the perfect activities for you and your family during your time off from work or school, take a look at these seven tips to creating lasting memories of your special time together! By spending five minutes reading this list, you will develop skills that will enhance your ability to look back on this week (or more??) and relive it with future generations.
TIP #1 NO MORE VERTICAL VIDEO! When you watch TV, is your screen taller than it is wide or wider than it is tall? How about your computer screen? OK; if you use a tablet, it can go either way, but most of us watch television and videos in a 16 x 9 aspect ratio. That means wider than it is tall. So if you are using your smart phone or tablet to take video, hold it so it is the same way, sideways, or wider than it is tall. Don’t hold it up and down, or your video will be shrunk down to a column in the middle of your TV or computer screen when you try to watch it! Don’t understand what I’m talking about? Check out this tutorial: https://youtu.be/ gei5am2rxrg
TIP #4 SAVE, SAVE, SAVE!
TIP #6 DETAILS
Where is the sun? Is it behind what you are trying to videotape? If so, you will have a very difficult time seeing your subject. If you are shooting sunrise at the beach, then you can’t help but shoot into the sun, but all other times, try to get the sun behind you if you’re the one with the camera. If you are inside, try not to shoot toward the windows with sunlight streaming in. Put your back to the window and shoot toward the inside of the room. It will help even out the lighting so that you can see what you are videotaping.
What do you do with your videos after a vacation? I’m sure some make it to Facebook. But what about the rest? When they go on Facebook, do you ever look at them again, besides when they show up in your annual reminder posts? Get in the habit of buying a large external hard drive, perhaps yearly, and dump all of your videos to that drive throughout the year. Consider using an inexpensive editing program to create a 10 minute recap of your vacation (there are even companies that can provide this service if you’re willing to spend a little more money). My family puts all our videos from the year on DVDs and keeps them in a binder, so we can go back and look at any year when we’re feeling a bit nostalgic. The kids love it!
Don’t forget the details. Yes, it’s nice to see a pretty pan of the beach full of people, but get close-ups of things like your daughter’s sand-covered feet, their hair blowing on their favorite ride, the yummy ice cream cone, signs from your favorite places so you remember where you went.
TIP #3 CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?
TIP #5 IT’S ALL IN THE FAMILY
TIP #2 WATCH YOUR LIGHT SOURCE
NJ-TOM-CD-16 FINAL.indd 13
But make sure all of the family is in it! Most of the time either Mom or Dad handles all the videotaping of family events. But does he or she ever make it in the video? Make a point to ensure everyone on your vacation gets in the video at some point. Years from now you don’t want to watch it and say, “Where was Mom this vacation?” Even let the kids take some of the video so Mom and Dad can be seen together! It’s fun to see it through the kids’ eyes too.
Above all – don’t forget to participate in your vacation! Put down the camera and enjoy your family. There are some memories that are best left in your mind. You don’t have to document every single moment. Enjoy your vacation in the Greater Toms River area! And don’t forget to tag #WeAreTR in any pics and videos you post on social media! Darcie King Executive Producer E Video Productions, LLC www.EVideoProductions.net (732) 349-4762 darcie@evideoproductions.net
tomsriverchamber.com
When you are videotaping with your smartphone, you have little control over how the audio is heard in the camera. But there are still ways you can maximize the audio in your family videos. If you need to hear what someone is saying, try to get as close to them as possible. Also, move away from any noise sources (air conditioning units, loud rides at the amusement park, street noise, etc.). If you are using a more traditional camera, such as a DSLR that shoots video, you can even invest in an inexpensive wireless microphone if the sound is that important to you (such as a wedding or child’s performance).
TIP #7 LESS IS MORE Finally, remember, less is more! Don’t go chasing the perfect shot. Sometimes when you just stand there, you can let the action happen in your video. The better you can stabilize the camera, the easier your videos will be to watch. Find something to lean on or rest your elbow on. Use both hands. Whatever you can do to be still, do it. And let the action happen within the sceen that you are shooting.

At HealthSouth Toms River, we provide a hospital level of care to patients recovering from conditions including stroke, spinal cord injury, amputee, neurological, complex orthopedic conditions and more. Many facilities offer inpatient rehabilitation services, but the quality, experience and comprehensive nature of these services can vary significantly. HealthSouth Toms River strives to help patients achieve their most optimal level of independence through its specialty programs, patient satisfaction, national clinical ratings and patient clinical outcomes. Patients at HealthSouth Toms River receive at least 15 hours of comprehensive therapy a week. Registered nurses are available 24 hours a day to ensure patients receive the constant care they need, and physicians* make frequent visits each week, keeping goals on track and independence in sight. Our team approach: Our teams of expert clinicians work together to develop an individualized care plan that will help patients reach their most optimal level of independence.
They are specifically trained in the area of physical rehabilitation to better serve patients and help them reach their goals. Take a tour: Before you make a decision, make an appointment to take a tour of the hospital. It’s a higher quality of care that you can see firsthand. Recreation: BlueClaws
A
ffordable, family, fun was the mission statement of the BlueClaws before they ever played their first game, and it remains their mission statement today, after 15 years and over 6.4 million fans. The BlueClaws, a minor-league baseball affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, opened their doors in 2001 and have led the South Atlantic League in attendance each year of existence.
are the only two former BlueClaws to have their numbers retired by the team - Howard’s 29 was retired in 2010 and Hamels’ 19 was retired in 2014.
The backbone of the organization has always been, and will continue to be, affordable, family fun. The BlueClaws have several day-of-the-week promotions to further that goal. Each Sunday and Monday, kids eat free. Seniors eat free every Tuesday. Thursdays are Thirsty Thursday with dollar beer and soda, and there are post-game fireworks every Friday.
That combination of on-field success with affordable, family entertainment has been a catalyst for the BlueClaws in their first 15 years at the Jersey Shore. But in addition to that, the 6.4 million fans to come through the gates have benefitted from a top ballpark with significant perks for all fans.
On the field through their first 15 seasons, the BlueClaws have seen 69 of their alumni go on to play in the big leagues, or, to put in the local vernacular, go “From the Shore to the Show.” Included on that list are Ryan Howard, a former MVP who played with the BlueClaws in 2002, and Cole Hamels, the 2008 World Series MVP who played with the BlueClaws in 2003. These two players
The BlueClaws, who have been a Phillies affiliate since their 2001 inception, have won three South Atlantic League titles - 2006, 2009, and 2010.
FirstEnergy Park has 6,588 fixed seats throughout the stadium, and not a bad seat can be found throughout the park. The lower seating bowl includes 15 sections, with all 15 starting no farther back than the back of the infield dirt. Down the left field line is Dr. Bernard’s Kids Zone with a series of rides and games for kids. The Coors Light WRAT Trap is located in right-center field and houses Thirsty Thursdays each week. In right field, fans congregate at the Food Court and can taste a wide variety of brews at the team’s Craft Brew House.

Businesses, groups, and families hold outings at the stadium in one of the three picnic areas, located around the concourse, or on the suite level. The BlueClaws luxury suite level houses two party decks, open-air, undercover buffet areas, Champions Club, a triple-box party suite and 16 luxury suites, which hold up to 20 people and feature indoor/ outdoor seating, climate control, cable television and the best view at the Jersey Shore.
The biggest addition, literally, came in 2015, when the team installed a brand-new 1,850 square-foot video board that includes 1.13 million LEDs and a 15HD pixel layout that provides high density, clear and crisp imagery. This is the same technology used in 10 majorleague stadiums. The team is also very active in the community. BlueClaws staff members work with 15 area chambers of commerce, and staff members are involved with boards or event committees of 30 area nonprofit organizations. Many of these nonprofit organizations work with the BlueClaws throughout the year as part of their Community Partners program. These groups raise money through BlueClaws fundraiser outings and receive exposure throughout the season and are eligible for end-of-year grants as well. Community Partners range in size from smaller organizations to local chapters of larger organizations. Money is raised by BlueClaws Charities throughout the year through a variety of measures, including special fundraising events. Each year, the organization hosts an April “Bowling with the BlueClaws” fundraising event. In May, the team holds their ALS Celebrity Waiter Event to raise money for the ALS Association of Greater Philadelphia, the principal charity of the Phillies. Each August, the BlueClaws Charities “Nine and Dine” Golf Outing raises additional funds for the organization. Jersey auctions have consistently proven to be a popular fundraising opportunity - several times each season, the BlueClaws will wear special jerseys which are later auctioned off for BlueClaws Charities. Past jersey auctions include Ugly Sweater Jerseys, Celebrate the Garden State, BluePaws (dog foot-prints) and Irish Heritage. The team is scheduled to wear Harry Potter, “Caturday,” luau, and Augtoberfest (as in Octoberfest in August) jerseys this year. Plus, each year since 2008, the BlueClaws become the “BruceClaws” for one night only - Bruce Springsteen Appreciation Night. The team plays Springsteen music throughout the night and wears special BruceClaws jerseys for one of the most popular nights of the season. Over the last 15 years, the BlueClaws have been very proud to be a part of the Jersey Shore community, and look forward to the next 15 years. ■

ant to live longer? Research shows volunteering extends life. Discover how you can make a difference.
If you have five minutes a week or five hours a month, you can be a CVCJ volunteer. There is never a minimum time requirement for volunteering. Donate your time and talent to whatever level you feel comfortable. CVCJ strives to match volunteers to provide services close to where you live.
If you’ve always wanted to give something back, but weren’t sure where to begin, Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey (CVCJ) is a fun and flexible way to help seniors and veterans stay independent and connected. CVCJ volunteer Cecile says she loves volunteering for CVCJ: “They enrich my life with the people I meet and their stories.” Cecile transports seniors to and from the doctors, and remarked that the people she’s taken have been extremely grateful, because they aren’t able to drive themselves. Another volunteer, Maribeth, visits Albena, who has Alzheimer’s, so that Joanne (her caregiver) is able to take a rest. She has said she feels like “part of the family.” and Joanne
Don’t wait another moment. Experience the joy of giving. Live longer. Become a CVCJ Volunteer. is thankful for the break. “Maribeth gives me the precious gift of time to regroup so that I am better able to care for mom and keep her comfortable in her home,” Joanne said.
CVCJ is an interfaith, nonprofit agency. These dedicated individuals come from all walks of life to partner with CVCJ to make life better for the vulnerable in the community.
It’s easy to recognize a volunteer. If you ask them what they do, you will see a sparkle in their eye and a smile on their face. The inner joy that is experienced by giving to others shines outward.

Joint Base
J
oint base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is the Department of Defense’s only tri-service joint base. With over 80 mission partners, the base is the true definition of a total force platform, enabling global mobility, training and education and innovation capabilities across air, land, sea and cyber domains. Located 18 miles southeast of Trenton, the joint base, which officially stood up on Oct. 1, 2009, consists of 42,000 contiguous acres spanning more than 20 miles east to west. It is bordered by two of the largest counties in New Jersey, Ocean and Burlington, which include 10 townships and boroughs. More than 42,000 Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guardsmen, civilians and their family members live and work on and around the base, making it the second largest employer in the state with a $6.9 billion economic impact. The joint base is home to many DOD missions to include: the 99th Regional Support Command; U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center, Naval Air Systems Command; 108th Wing; 87th Air Base Wing; 2nd Brigade, 75th Division; Marine Aircraft Group 49; 77th Sustainment Brigade; 78th Training Brigade; 174 Combined Arms Training Brigade; 305th Air Mobility Wing; 514th Air Mobility Wing; 621st Contingency Response Wing; Army Support Activity-For Dix; U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Research and Development Center; Federal Correctional Institute; U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team; and Naval Operational Support Center. Active-duty, reservists and guardsmen ensure total force integration by training and supporting installation operations, and preserving our country’s homeland defense, while sustaining global contingency operations.
The base maintains a positive relationship with the local communities through its outreach programs, such as the Honorary Commanders program, which positively impacts community and base interaction by building and strengthening community relationships. Also, the Community Outreach Volunteer Experience (COVE) provides a platform for personnel of the Joint Base to share their military experiences with the local community. Installation management support for the joint base is provided by the host unit, the 87th

Air Base Wing. The wing provides support for approximately 4,000 facilities with an approximate value of $9.5 billion in physical infrastructure.
OVERVIEW OF MISSIONS AIR FORCE Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst is an Air Mobility Center of Excellence projecting every mobility mission except air drops from the joint base. The capabilities residing at the joint base extend total force global air mobility through the movement of troops and cargo in its C-17 Globemaster III, KC-10 Extender and KC135 Stratotanker aircraft from the 305th Air Mobility Wing, 514th Air Mobility Wing and 108th Wing. JB MDL is also home to the 621st Contingency Response Wing, which is highly-specialized in training and rapidly deploying personnel to quickly open airfields and establish, expand, sustain and coordinate air mobility operations. The USAF Expeditionary Center is the Air Force’s Center of Excellence for advanced expeditionary combat support training and education. The 87th Air Base Wing is the host unit for the joint base and provides expeditionary combat support to Airmen and Sailors in support of worldwide combat and humanitarian operations. It also provides all installation management functions across the joint base. The joint base is also home to a C-17 Weapons School and the sole AMC Test and Evaluation Squadron. ARMY JB MDL is one of four U.S. Army power projection platforms, conducting both institutional and mobilization training. Since the start of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, the Army has mobilized more than 120,000 service members through the mobilization training center located at JB MDL. The 99th Regional Support command, which is headquartered at the joint base, provides operations support to all Army Reserve soldiers, units, facilities and equipment for Reserve units in the Northeast Region of the United States. The 174 Combined Arms Training Brigade executes the training and validation process, preparing service members to deploy, fight and win.
The Army Support Activity – For Dix supports the facilities and services that enable the training, mobilization, deployment and redeployment of reserve, active and interagency personnel. The joint base is also home to an Army ROTC Brigade, a Recruiting Battalion and the Army Communications and Electronics Research and Development Center. NAVY The U.S. Navy conducts advanced research and development programs at JB MDL in support of air platform operations worldwide. The joint base is home to the Naval Air Systems Command, which provides a critical link between worldwide Naval Aviation and Navy aircraft carrier battle group. It is the Navy’s engineering support activity for Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment and is responsible for maintaining fleet support and infusing modern technology across the entire spectrum of equipment needed to launch, land and maintain aircraft from ships at sea. The research and development of full-scale aircraft carrier catapult and arresting gear are conducted on one of the joint base’s active runways. In addition, three active test tracks for aircraft landing simulations, hangars, advanced engineering laboratories, training facilities and a complex of manufacturing and prototyping facilities call JB MDL home. JB MDL is the development site for the next generation of aircraft carrier launch facilities. The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System land based test site is the only fully-capable side for testing future aircraft launch systems to operate from aircraft carriers. COAST GUARD The U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Strike Team is a part of the National Strike Force (NSF), which provides highly trained, experienced personnel and specialized equipment to Coast Guard and other federal agencies to facilitate preparedness for and response to oil and hazardous substance pollution incidents in order to protect public health and the environment. The NSF’s area of responsibility covers all Coast Guard Districts and Federal Response Regions. —JB MDL public website: www.jointbasemdl.af.mil —JB MDL on Facebook: www.facebook.com/jbmdl —JB MDL on Twitter: www.twitter.com/jointbasemdl —JB MDL on Flickr: www.flickr.com/photos/jointbasemdl ■

Insider’s Guide HOW TO MARKET YOUR BUSINESS ONLINE By Dawn Malinowski
OWNER OF SOCIALTREND INTERNET SOLUTIONS, LLC
A
t SocialTrend Internet Solutions, we love to empower our clients to improve their business through online marketing. Our goal with this article is to provide ideas for any small business owner to get started or expand their online marketing footprint. We hope to educate, inspire and support you in achieving your business goals through online marketing. We will discuss best practices for your business website, social media tips, how to incorporate blogging into your web presence and the importance of consistency and search engine optimization. Let’s get started! First, your business must have its own website. This is so critically important – without your own dedicated domain name customers can’t find you or will deduce you are not a legitimate company. According to the Digital Influence Index, 89% of consumers today use the internet as a research tool before making a purchase. Without a website you are missing out on all those new leads. If you have an outdated or poorly built website, make this upgrade a priority. Having a hard to navigate, messy website can be worse than not having one at all if you portray an unprofessional brand when new clients visit your site. Whether you are starting from scratch or want to revamp your current website, here are some important guidelines: ■ Responsive website – A responsive website is easily readable across any device (mobile, tablet and desktop) with minimum resizing and panning to view. More people view digital content on mobile devices then desktops, so be sure your website can handle all types of devices beautifully.
tomsriverchamber.com
■ Consistent branding –Be sure the style of the website is consistent with your brand – modern, traditional or eclectic.
24
■ Professional look – You need professional, high resolution logos and pictures. Be consistent with font used, colors for headlines, buttons and text. ■ Contact Form – Consumers like anonymous contact. Include an email address or a contact form so new clients can send a quick note to start the initial conversation with you. ■ Customer testimonials – This is a perfect avenue to share personal stories of how you have succeeded and they will resonate extremely well with potential new customers.
NJ-TOM-CD-16 FINAL.indd 24
■ Geography – If you are a service company, be sure to include a description of the geography you cover. If you are a product company, highlight how far your products have traveled to customers. If you don’t know where to start as it relates to a website, visit the sites of some of your favorite companies. Find a few that you feel reflect the right style and tone you want to convey for your business. Bring those ideas to a web developer, and they should be able to take it from there. Social media is an ever-changing landscape and can be difficult to navigate on your own. The biggest mistake people make is thinking they have to do every social media platform and as a result, they fail at all of them. Instead, focus on one or two platforms and do a fantastic job on those. Same rules apply here as on your website; be consistent with your brand, use professional logos, etc. The followers on your social media platforms will expect you to be updating regularly. If you grow stale, consumers will see your social media as being neglected and will not use it as a source of information and certainly will not share it with their network connections. Blogging is a very effective way for businesses to engage their customers and find new ones – it’s not just for individuals. If you are not new to the online marketing game, then you probably already have a website and a good presence on social media. Adding a blog to your website is the next step. A blog allows you to do many things including: ■ Add fresh content on your website, which
helps you rank in search engines and gives your website visitors something new to investigate.
■ Generate perfect material to use for your
email marketing campaigns and your social media updates.
■ Introduce a new service or product. ■ Make a personal connection with your
customers by telling “stories” about yourself and your business
■ Demonstrate your expertise in your field
and educate your clients on your industry
A blog is relatively easy to set up and update (you or your web designer should be able to easily add it to any existing website) and can actually be a very fun outlet for a business owner. Same rules apply – be sure to update on a regular basis and use the blogging platform to reiterate a consistent brand.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a complicated beast and not something we can go into deep detail here. First, know where you rank in each major search engine (Google, Bing) and determine if SEO is something you need to focus on based on your results. Chances are you should. In order to determine your rank, be sure you use consistent search criteria and a “clean” computer. This means a computer that you haven’t worked on before, otherwise the history saved on your computer will influence the results and give you a false ranking higher in the search results. Second, we recommend engaging a professional for your SEO work. If this is something you don’t want to do, then you need to educate yourself on how each search engine’s algorithm works so you can determine how to update your website to optimize it for the best results on each search platform and for the most critical search criteria. Remember 89% of consumers use the internet to research before they make a purchase and you don’t want to miss those leads because you are not ranking high on Google – SEO is important. Overall, like all things in business, you should have a plan. Create a strategy for your online marketing campaign and be consistent. Keep everything updated regularly and in line with any changes you are making with your brand and message. Have fun creating your campaigns and execute your plan. Then sit back and watch your business grow.
MASTER THE ART OF DELEGATING By Kathleen Brady, Georgian Court University
Delegating is an overlooked, yet essential skill to master. Its purpose is to enable you to dispose of simpler tasks to free you up to perform tasks that are of greater value to your business. The truth is you probably can do most tasks better and faster than your employees. Delegate them anyway. The better your team does under your leadership, the more successful your business will be. Understand that there is a difference between assigning a task and delegating one. If there are multiple directives, required check-ins and a significant amount of supervision time, you have merely assigned the task. This method will cause you to become a choke point and slow down the work process. Remember, people rise or fall to the level of expectation. Delegate tasks and hold people accountable. Use the four-step delegation process outlined below.
4/1/2016 10:22:31 AM
Think it through. Clearly define your goals and objectives, assign the tasks and assess progress to ensure you get the end result you want. Assemble the team. Identify the person(s) who can get the job done. Be sure that they: ■ Have the ability to perform the task. ■ Understand the project’s overall objective. ■ Can complete the task in the allotted
timeframe.
■ Are aware of established performance
standards.
Communicate! Communicate! Communicate! Always operate under the principal that you can never be too clear. It is important to communicate exactly what needs to be done in an unambiguous effective manner. Indicate specifically what you want the staff member to do and be sure to confirm that the person is clear about the assignment. Provide specific deadlines. “ASAP” is meaningless. So is “In a few days. Try, “I need it in an hour” or “I need it Wednesday afternoon.” Leave no room for ambiguity. Setting specific deadlines and allowing your team to manage their own workload will ameliorate your constant need to hover and inquire, “is it done yet?” to the relief of both you and your staff. Delegating is not just a way to reduce your workload and complete projects. It is a way to develop employees and strengthen your workforce. Once you learn to mobilize forces around you, you will maximize your leverage, free yourself up to perform tasks of greater value to your business and maybe even find a little spare time to enjoy your life. Kathleen Brady, CPC, is director of Career Services and adjunct instructor at Georgian Court University and principal of Brady & Associates Career Planners, LLC, a career coaching and professional development training company. PREVENTIVE CARE IS ESSENTIAL FOR YOUR PET’S HEALTH VMD, VCA BAYVIEW ANIMAL HOSPITAL It is important to remember that just like with people, good health in animals comes from preventive care. Just as we have our cholesterol and blood pressure checked more often as we age, pets need annual exams and bloodwork as well to screen for illnesses such as diabetes and thyroid disease. Also, many pets are on medications and need to monitor their effects on internal organs. The Center for Disease Control recommends

Frequent dental cleanings also help prevent periodontal disease from harming organs such as the kidneys, liver and heart. In addition, monthly heartworm and flea and tick preventatives are an important part of wellness care and prevent diseases that can be life threatening and expensive to treat.

If you detect problems early, you can treat and resolve these illnesses with less expense and greater success. Pets age at a faster rate than humans and their health can change significantly over the course of a year. Early intervention helps your pet live a longer and healthier life! At Bayview Animal Hospital, our Care Club membership allows for these services at a discounted rate to make veterinary care more affordable. We treat a variety of species including dogs, cats, reptiles, birds and pot-bellied pigs. We provide house calls for patients who get too anxious being transported in a car, and boarding services for our furry friends while their owners are away.

that veterinarians check a fecal sample yearly for microscopic parasites, which are not only harmful to your pet, but many are also contagious to people. Because one out of every 15 dogs in Ocean County recently tested positive for exposure to Lyme disease, annual vaccination for Lyme and other illnesses is more important than ever before.
