VIA Board Chairman Welcome
By the time you read this, we will be in the midst of the year-end rush, and I will be approaching the end of my year-long term as chairman of this tremendous organization. During my speech at the Spark Awards back in March, I warned that anyone contemplating taking the helm of this organization better have their platform ready to roll before Jan. 1 because the time flies fast, and before you know it, you’re writing your farewell letter as chairman.
Throughout the year we (mostly Sue) spent hundreds of hours learning, implementing and documenting processes for the new association management system called IMIS. While it has taken a while to figure it all out, the benefits going forward will be felt for years to come. As the year reached into the fourth quarter, we reinvigorated our relationship with ToolingU/SME, which provides literally hundreds of manufacturing related courses and program series all delivered online (and with a 10 percent member discount as well!).
While there is truly not a lot that I, as chairman, can take credit for this year (Trust me, it was Kathy’s never ending bag of ideas and Sue and Trish’s heroic efforts that made it all happen!) the subjects that we tried very hard to provide rich, high quality content for included subjects that heavily affected most of our companies this year, starting with Workforce Development to find people, and then HR and Culture related topics to try to retain the people we had. While those “mega-topics” consumed much of the programming year for the VIA, we also successfully squeezed in a new Sustainability Roundtable (my pet project), which has taken off and stands as another culture-related topic as well as an environmental one. As if that weren’t enough, this year saw the reinvention of the Spark Awards for 2019, which now incorporates a membership-wide survey and benchmarking system. This project in itself was a gargantuan effort that was made easier with the help of many volunteers and partner organizations. None of us can wait for the surveys to come back to see what the results could do for the organization and for our members going forward.
4
ILVIADG19 design.indd 4
Finally, as the new year turns, we stand at the gate of a gargantuan new membership benefit that could reshape the landscape of health care and address another topic that is often listed as a major challenge for our membership. Our Captive Insurance plan will go online with the goal of substantially reducing the cost of health care for its members. We see this new benefit as being capable of propelling the VIA and its membership forward, perhaps as never before in its history. No doubt we will all be watching performance closely as 2019 progresses. I am pleased to say that everyone involved with the VIA in 2018 has done their best at securing its future, and thanks to Kathy, Sue and Trish’s efforts, I will pass the baton over to an excellent new leader, Aaron Nosek, who is slated to take office in 2019 with membership numbers amongst our strongest, and financial results expected to surpass our plans. I am honored to have served the membership of the VIA and remain an eternal fan of its Vision and Mission. Happy Holidays and best wishes for a prosperous New Year. VIA President WELCOME
Greetings! The VIA staff had a lot of fun producing the 2019 edition of this somewhat new tradition of ours. It’s our Membership Directory and marketing piece for our association and is affectionately called The Source! This year’s edition includes a deep dive into our NEW & IMPROVED Spark Awards and includes pictures from our events, information about our membership benefits and great info about our member companies. Our cover photo is our nod to 2018 chairman, Tim Tremain’s company, MTH Pumps. We did this for the first time last year as a thank you to our current chairman. It’s a big job and we are extremely grateful for the dedication and guidance we get from our leader. We also wanted to show you a glimpse into the workshop of such a special member.
To promote and protect the interests of Manufacturing. To promote best practices through resources and education. To educate members, employees and public about vital role of manufacturing. To provide a vehicle through which employers can exchange ideas of mutual interest. To provide services to assist employers in executing these ideas. To actively support excellence in education. Encourage innovation, new product development and continuous improvement. To coordinate and support MFG oriented projects and activities. To partner with other similar organizations, educational institutions, municipalities and counties to ensure success in the region.
2018 was a fantastic year, and our new staff got adjusted quickly to our intense pace. We work very hard to bring you the most value that we can wrap our arms around. As I was preparing for this year’s Annual Meeting, I reviewed our bylaws. The bylaws of the VIA include a section on the Objectives and Purposes of the VIA.
Yep. Check, check, check and more checks. It’s EXACTLY what we do all day long. We are grateful for the opportunity to support such an important industry that has such a huge downstream impact on the U.S. Economy. Thank you to the companies that have supported our efforts this year. Our continued pledge to you is to do everything we can to magnify the investment you make in us to benefit manufacturing and more in this great region. Best wishes,
I’d like to summarize these big ideas, so that you know what’s at the heart of everything we do:

VIA Benchmarking for EXCELLENCE VIA SPARK AWARDS: MEMBER RECOGNITION FOR EXCELLENCE The Valley Industrial Association created a brandnew Awards event that celebrated and recognized Excellence in our region in spring 2017. It was a big success. The speeches of acceptance revealed how important this was to our companies, and how proud they were of their accomplishments. But the application process was laborious and most of our companies only applied for one category. The takeaways were missing something important – clear steps on how companies could make improvements. Through discussions with our board, and some great partners – a new Benchmarking format was chosen for the application. It was not a quick or easy path, however. Executive Board Members Tim Tremain, Craig Russell and Aaron Keson helped us hone the categories and the direction of the “new and improved” Spark Awards Benchmarking for Excellence program.
THE BENCHMARKING PROCESS Here’s a review of the process we started:
1
STEP ONE
• Refine the categories • Develop Benchmarking questions
STEP TWO
2 3 4 5
• Have questions reviewed by Centers of Excellence and IMEC
Benchmarking removes most of the subjectivity from the judging.
STEP THREE
Benchmarking gives clear roadmap for improvement and validation of Best Practices.
• Launch application in October 2018 • Application deadline is December 2018
Promotes excellence in the region.
STEP FOUR
• Identify top three finalists • Interview finalists
Helps companies see where they fall within their regional neighbors and like companies.
STEP FIVE
Our new multiple-choice answer system makes it easy and fast to complete.
• Announce winners • Celebrate at the VIA Spark Awards March 13, 2019 • Share data with group

VIA Benchmarking for EXCELLENCE
BENCHMARKING CATEGORIES Workforce Development includes several important things: Developing Leaders, Career Awareness and Human Resources. Questions include: How do you attract and recruit qualified candidates? How do you train your employees? What programs are in place at your company to support your employees’ career development? Leadership development programs Social Responsibility includes sustainability in the GREEN sense and community service/outreach. Questions include: Have you established sustainability goals? How does your company engage others outside of your company in your sustainability efforts? (i.e. supply chain, community, etc.) Do your sustainability efforts impact the environment? How do you communicate sustainability to your organization? Operational Excellence includes lean operations, quality and sustainable operations. Questions include: Does each strategy or strategic plan match the overall goals and vision of the company? Relevance of each business strategy to overall company vision. Does the company use goal setting and detailed planning for creating and implementing strategic plans? Are the company’s focus and strategic priorities clearly established, maintained and adjusted over time? How well does the company maximize or utilize facilities? (Includes infrastructure layout and workflow)
9
ILVIADG19 design.indd 9
Culture includes values, goals and development. Questions include: Has your company defined core values? Does your company have a defined core focus, vision, mission and purpose? Describe your company’s goals. Describe your company’s commitment to workforce development: learning, training and employee knowledge. Define your company’s focus on employee engagement. Safety questions include: Has your company established/identified a formal/ written safety program? Has senior management clearly communicated its support and expectations regarding safety. Have safety & health goals been established for the facility and communicated to all staff members? Are senior management & front-line supervision actively involved in safety & health program? ➤

VIA Benchmarking for EXCELLENCE
Innovation focuses more on innovation process. Questions were chosen such as: What is your process for discovery and analysis of strategic opportunities? To what extent do you test, prototype and refine your innovation to mitigate risk of failure and ensure success? To what extent do you protect your intellectual property? To what extent is the innovation process crossfunctional Our goal is that all of our companies benchmark themselves in all six categories. There are multiple choice answers for each question, so it should take only minutes to compete each one. Every company will receive a Radar Chart showing where they fall, and where they fall amongst their peers. We could not be more excited to celebrate with the winners (the icing on the cake!) on March 13, 2019. Save the date to celebrate together. ●

About the VIA
The Valley Industrial Association celebrates its 117th anniversary in 2019. Since its inception in 1902, the VIA has been an important hub for industrialists and manufacturers in the Fox Valley area and beyond. We are an association small in number, with more than 220 companies, but we represent a diverse base of manufacturing specialties. Our companies represent manufacturers of paper, plastics, metals, large equipment, food, beverage and more. The VIA has earned its reputation for serving its members through three pillars of value: Resources – like conducting research and collecting survey data on business conditions, benefits, salary and more. Education – like seminars and professional peer groups for numerous functions in the manufacturing environment. Networking and collaboration – like our golf outing, membership breakfasts, luncheons, forums and committees. The mission & vision of the VIA is simple: The Valley Industrial Association will be a value-added partner to its members. This will be accomplished by providing strategic resources; relevant educational
programming and networking opportunities that help our members meet or exceed their business objectives. The Valley Industrial Association will be recognized by our members as an integral resource contributing to their ongoing success. In 2018, we pledge to focus on the VIA Core Values, offering our members a customer service experience that we want to be second to none: Member focused: Commitment to meeting our members’ needs and expectations. Industrial community: Commitment to maintaining the “local” connection and “grass roots” legacy of the VIA. Learning: Commitment to advancing knowledge/skills of the workforce. Integrity: Commitment to the highest moral and ethical standards. Excellence: Commitment to be the best at what we do.

VIA Committees – IMPACTS & RESULTS
PROGRAMMING COMMITTEE 2018 has been a pivotal year for the VIA. Last year, we changed how we asked for programming feedback. We did a series of focus groups and Roundtable discussions and the sheer amount of feedback we received was easily 10 times what we received in the past. Thank you to all who have helped us define the direction we are going.
GOLF COMMITTEE Looking for a fun group? This is a great group to be involved in. While we do lean on these volunteers to help us round up golfers and find donations, they also give us valuable input as to the direction we should go each year. We have received some great feedback about location, cost, games and ideas for sponsorships from this crew. It’s also a great opportunity to network with people on the committee. Our Golf Outing is scheduled for Monday, June 17, 2019, at Aurora Country Club. The committee will begin meeting in February 2019. We hope you will consider joining this committee.
BENCHMARKING FOR EXCELLENCE/SPARK AWARDS The work that came out of this committee in 2018 was truly remarkable. It’s changed over the year – starting out with event details and judges for the previous application to a committee that developed the beginnings of our Benchmarking for Excellence best practices criteria, with multiple choice questions and answers. Over 25 companies supported this initiative and established something that will help our members have clear goals for improvement. Thank you to everyone who participated. Check out the calendar for the next meeting.
SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE – TRANSITIONING TO: SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY EXCELLENCE FORUM While this committee started as a brainstorm of our 2018 Spark Awards Winner MTH Pumps owner Tim Tremain, it’s really taken off. Our first meeting
14
ILVIADG19 design.indd 14
was at the Penrose Brewing Company and we had a “big picture” discussion of what topics we wanted to explore. We were later invited to Clark Environmental for a great discussion on Climate Change. Aurora Specialty Textiles hosted a tour and discussion about the ISO environmental standard 14001 and our last meeting was on Carbon Footprint. Our Social Responsibility committee will follow our new Benchmarking for Excellence guidelines including Community Service and Outreach in addition to environmental and conservation initiatives.
FILL THE PIPELINE COMMITTEE – TRANSITIONING TO: WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT EXCELLENCE FORUM Talk about an impactful committee! In 2018, this committee broke out into six sub-committees: Partnering with Education, Employee Engagement, Marketing for Employees, Non-traditional Employees, Funding Sources and our VIA Job Board. As a result, we held a training session called “Are You Intern Ready?” with local manufacturers talking about their successful programs and tie-ins to the education networks with our local education partners: EFE – VALEES.org, Waubonsee Community College, Elgin Community College and local high schools. We also created a shared document on possible Engagement Survey questions and candidate profiles. Our MFG Day tours and Job Fair also resulted from this meeting. Join us for the next quarterly meeting – check our calendar for details.

The Three Pillars OF THE VIA
The three pillars that we talk about every day here at the Valley Industrial Association came straight from our mission statement: “The VIA will be a value-added partner to its members. This will be accomplished by providing strategic resources, relevant educational programming and networking opportunities that help our members meet or exceed their business objectives.” Each pillar is valuable, and we work hard to continue to find ways to enrich each one. Let’s take a look at each one:
STRATEGIC RESOURCES DATA is Power VIA 2018 Salary Survey We continue to partner with the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association to include all the data from both associations in a single data repository, offering data specific to our members local area, here in the Fox Valley and Chicagoland: Data for 184 job descriptions, ranging from accountant to welding machine operator. Data from 40 VIA companies and 40 more Non-VIA companies. Comprehensive incentive pay and total cash compensation information for all positions. Salary Survey Debrief, free with participation. VIA 2018 Employee Benefits Survey This survey is conducted biennially was published in 2018. The Employee Benefits Survey provides data exclusive to 40 companies in the VIA Membership area: 145 questions regarding employee benefits. Information on wellness, vision and retirement. Information on non-insurance related workplace benefits offered.

VIA 2019 GROUP EVENTS Workforce Development – Formerly known as the “Fill the Pipeline” or “Career Awareness” committee, this new quarterly forum will encompass best practices in partnering with education, employee retention, leadership development, among other topics. We will have education partners, community partners and more involved to bring a broad scope to helping our companies through the challenges in this current hiring climate. Social Responsibility – The two primary areas of focus for this group are sustainability and community service and outreach. Sustainability speaks to environmental growth and the long-term stewardship of our world. Community service and outreach measures the impact your company is making on people through your work with 501(c)(3) nonprofits and other service organizations. Innovation – Some might consider new product development as the most important thing a company can do to keep their competitive edge. Topics like process for discovery, prototyping, mitigation of risk and protection of intellectual property are just a few examples of the best practices identified in our Innovation Benchmarking Questions.
Culture – We’ve taken one of our most popular subjects and turned this one into its own quarterly program. Like the other forums, topics for the culture forums will come from the Benchmarking for Excellence best practices. This may include company goals, vision, focus and purpose along with top ways companies can build a positive culture of loyal employees. Safety – Safety had been a professional peer group for years and now it’s a Benchmarking for Excellence category. Topics like safety committees, goals, onboarding and ongoing training will be discussed. We will continue to include relevant updates to keep this group up on trends and best practices. ●
