VIA Board Chairman WELCOME

Having been a member of the VIA for over 20 years and in my second tour of duty with the board gives me a little historical perspective on where we’ve been and where we’re going as an association. To call 2017 a significant year of change at the VIA would be an understatement for sure.

manufacturing and its related fields as some of the best career opportunities for those entering the workforce and for those retraining for new career paths.

Bringing on Kathy Gilmore as our new president and turning over our entire staff has been a large task for the board, but I must recognize our past chairman, Craig Russell of Monitor Technologies, who put in tremendous amounts of his personal time towards managing this transition and doing it extremely well. The membership owes Craig a debt of thanks for his diligence and effort to move us forward into a new era of strength and vitality for our association. While transition can be a tumultuous time for any organization, Kathy has taken the reins, and with her capable new staff, has already bolstered every aspect of the organization from enhanced educational opportunities and marketing, to the addition of a health insurance captive as a new member benefit. I could easily see the captive insurance alone driving our membership and membership benefits to new heights in the next few years. It is an exciting time to be a member of the VIA. In 2017, many of us have seen substantial growth and with the very low unemployment figures, I think most of us have been talking about the same problem: “Where do we find qualified people?” As part of my platform for 2018, I hope to continue the VIA’s long history of promoting

4

ILVIADG18 design.indd 4

I know that I have struggled at times to understand how I, as the owner of a small company, can help bridge the gap between just talking about manufacturing and actually doing something that could create future job candidates. Some good options that are immediately available include hosting tours of your organization (whether for National Manufacturing Day, or the local Boy or Girl Scout Troop), donating to the VIA’s endowed scholarship fund for Waubonsee Community College or contacting your local high school principal, counselors, and/or industrial technology instructors to make sure they know what you do, and what the candidates you hire need to know to be qualified. For the VIA’s part, we will continue to seek out and coordinate efforts with member companies to get involved with promoting manufacturing to future members of the workforce in a meaningful way. Then, as always, we will continue to provide training programs and seminars that will enhance the skill sets of your new and seasoned employees. We’d be happy to attempt to coordinate suitable training programs of interest to the general membership, but we always need communication from our members to know what the hot topics are in your industry. Kathy, the VIA staff and I all stand ready to assist and partner with you to achieve your goals. The VIA is your resource. All you need to do is ask! Have a great 2018, Tim Tremain, President MTH Tool Company, Inc. / MTH Pumps Valley Industrial Association Board Chairman

VIA President WELCOME

Greetings! Thanks for opening up The Source! This special edition recognizes the Valley Industrial Association’s 115-year anniversary that we celebrated on Nov. 4, 2017. As we enter our 116th year, we had a great time looking back at the history of our amazing Association. Inside you will see our special legacy companies highlighted in this edition. Our cover photo is our nod to 2017 Chairman, Craig Russell’s company, Monitor Technologies. This year, we wanted to show you a glimpse into the workshop of one of our special members. This was a bit of a chaotic year, having no appointed president until May, and we got through that due to his dedication, and the support of our fantastic board. In the future, we plan to continue dedicating our cover photo, to honor our chairman’s company. We have a few reasons why this guide was important for us to print:  For celebration! Of our history in the Fox River Valley and greater Chicagoland.

6

ILVIADG18 design.indd 6

 For practicality! In finding our members so that you know their capabilities.  For necessity! Sharing information about the Association for those that need our support & services. Every day, we work hard to support manufacturing in this region. Our mission is to partner with our companies to help them meet and exceed their business objectives. Our theme this year was truly one of collaboration, because we believe that together we have the greatest impact. In addition to our members and our education partners, this year we worked with school groups, community groups, cities, counties, chambers, and even other associations to bring our members as many opportunities as we could wrap our arms around. Thank you to all the companies that have supported our efforts this year, it truly was an investment in your community for an industry that has such an incredible downstream impact. Our pledge to you is to continue to magnify any investment you make in us to benefit manufacturing and more in this great region. Best wishes on a happy and prosperous year, Kathy Gilmore President of VIA

Interesting Facts About MEMBERSHIP The Valley Industrial Association is composed of 225 member companies – some since our founding in 1902. Here are some interesting and historical facts about the organization:  The VIA has 15 members who have been with us for over 50 years.  We just celebrated our three-year anniversary in Geneva, Illinois. We formerly were located in Aurora, Illinois  Over 50 percent of our membership is located within a 10-mile radius of our education center and office at 2000 S. Batavia Ave., Geneva.  In 2017, we offered over 90 programs for various job titles within our member organizations. Almost every program that we offer has an educational component, and most include networking as well.  Our membership currently consists of 70 percent industrialists and 30 percent professional service providers.  Sixty-six percent of our manufacturers employ less than 100 employees.  Thirty-four percent of our manufacturers employ more than 100 employees.  In an effort to inspire our next generation of “makers,” the VIA helps organize our local version of the nationally recognized MFGDAY. In 2017, we coordinated two different tour days for our member companies with an impressive impact opening up new relationships in the home-school community and junior high schools for the first time ever. Through our efforts there were over 800 visits to our member companies in 2017.

Have a “quick question” about an HR issue that needs a quick fix? Whether the question is “what’s your bereavement policy?” or “do you offer tuition reimbursement and how much?” VIA Human Resource Group members come through with valuable information that helps making decisions easier.

VIA EMPLOYEE BENEFITS SURVEY This survey which is conducted biennially was published for 2016-2017. The Employee Benefits Survey provides data exclusive to 42 companies in the Fox Valley area. As an added bonus, you will also find relevant links to resources depicting

VIA SPARK AWARDS Spark, as defined by Merriam Webster, is something that sets off a sudden force. Back in 1902, the VIA was just a spark, that has continued to develop and grow. To continue to celebrate our 115th year as an association, the Spark awards program will highlight and promote the good work of our member companies; think of it as a celebration of the VIA. Our SPARK Awards Program will be held on March 15, 2018 at Riverside Receptions, Geneva. We will celebrate the accomplishments of our member companies within the following categories:  Manufacturing Awareness  Product Innovation  Community Service and Outreach  Safety  Human Resources  Sustainability

Who doesn’t love a good party? It’s a reason to get together and celebrate our industrial strength as an organization. Plan to join us on Thursday, March 15, 2018, and visit our website for more information.

Educational PROGRAMMING The VIA is committed to providing educational programming that makes a difference to the member companies we serve. You, our member companies, drive the type of programming we provide by sharing with us your challenges and initiatives in any given year. If there is a need, we aim to fill the gap with programming topics recommended by human resource managers, safety professionals, marketing managers, CEOs and others. With a variety of new programs, from Managing Teams: Leadership Series, to the REBOOTED classic Seven Seminars for Supervisors, we are dedicated to ensuring our programming is relevant to your company as well as individual job functions. We welcome your thoughts on our educational programming; please contact us via email at info@ viaassn.org or LinkedIn at www.linkedin.com/ company/valley-industrial-association.
