LIVING IN WESTERN DUPAGE

T

he three towns of Western DuPage County, Illinois — Warrenville, West Chicago and Winfield — offer a wonderful diverse combination of advantages for a new resident or business owner: Founded in the 1800s, each with a local history museum inside, these towns have long-established roots and traditions that are celebrated in annual fairs and festivals. Having grown quickly in the mid-to-late 1900s, they have a mixture of classic and modern housing stock that is remarkably affordable. They offer quality local schools and well-equipped parks, rec centers and forest preserves. Yet they are less than an hour’s drive or train ride from the third biggest city (and No. 1 biggest transportation

center) in the United States. They are within minutes of more than a dozen colleges and universities, including one of the biggest community colleges and job-skills training centers in the country. “You get these historic communities, and you’re still 50 minutes from downtown Chicago,” said David Sabathne, president of the Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce. “Western DuPage residents can enjoy the culture of the most expensive cities in the world yet live comfortably and affordably.” Located on Metra’s Union Pacific West rail line to Chicago, with the I-88 Tollway and BNSF commuter rail line just to the south, these villages are called home by many suburbanites who commute to jobs in downtown Chicago. But accessibility runs both ways and many reverse-commute, finding a variety of career, recreation and educational opportunities more attractive in a suburban setting. When you find world-class healthcare, culture, education and recreation thoughtfully blended into open spaces of parks, forest preserves and rivers, you have something special. Western DuPage has all of that and more, making it a perfect fit for new families to grow, established residents to prosper and retirees to live life to the fullest while enjoying some of the safest and affordable communities anywhere.

WEST CHICAGO

O

ne common nickname for West Chicago is “We-Go.” And that’s appropriate. This suburb and industrial center 30 miles west of that other Chicago was born, as it were, on a railroad tie. It contains the third-busiest airport in Illinois and it enjoys easy connections with the entire world via road, rail and air. What is now West Chicago began in 1849 with construction of the first railroad pushing westward into the frontier from what would become the hub of the nation’s whole railway network, the City of Chicago. Called the Chicago & Galena Union (later Chicago & North Western) Railroad, this first line aimed to connect the lake-and-rail-transport city of Chicago with the lead-mining boom town of Galena, Illinois, via Elgin and Rockford. When two other railroads — what would become the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy and Chicago Great Western — were built connecting the G&CU to Aurora and St. Charles, the area where they met became known to the three railroads as “Turner Junction,” in honor of the G&CU president, who personally owned and developed much of the land in that area. Two more rail lines were built meeting at Turner Junction, and for 50 years most residents worked for the railroads. When the town was officially incorporated in 1873, it was known as the Village of Turner. But as the big town to the east became one of the fastest-growing and most famous cities in the world in the late 1800s, the people of Turner decided in 1896 to rename themselves “West Chicago.” Modern-day West Chicago celebrates its railroading heritage each July with its signature Railroad Days festival in a local park. The festivities include a parade with an average of 75 floats, a fireworks show, carnival rides, musical groups and a 5K race. Growing since then to more than 27,000 people, today’s West Chicago is a diverse, family-oriented community with a rich cultural mix, a thriving industrial base and a strong transportation infrastructure. What used to be the Chicago & Galena Union is now the Union Pacific Railroad’s main-

line between Chicago and Los Angeles, and the Metra passenger rail service whisks commuters from West Chicago to Chicago in an hour. People who commute in or out by car (more come into West Chicago to work than leave it to work elsewhere) have three state highways connected to I-88, I-90 and I-290. And DuPage Airport, on the city’s west edge, has received the highest rating as a general-aviation facility and is home to many corporate fleets and private jets. Along with nationally recognized flight training DuPage Airport accommodates every type of aircraft from single-engine two-seat planes to a Global G650 luxury jet. These assets support a community of more than 700 businesses. Those include manufacturers, retail stores, warehouses and professional offices. They range from small family-run operations like West Chicago Printing to large multinational corporations such as Ball Horticulture. One of the oldest manufacturers, the 90-year-old Jel Sert Company, makes “fun foods” that go by such familiar brand names as Royal, Wyler’s, Fla-Vor-Ice and Mighty Fine. Many of the newer businesses have settled in DuPage Airport Authority’s 800-acre DuPage Business Center, which calls itself “America’s Most Advanced Business Park.” West Chicago fosters a business-supportive environment with a streamlined permitting process focused on customer service and ongoing communications. Business assistance programs include Downtown Retail and Restaurant Business Grants, Brilliance in Business Awards, creative and customized business incentives, a facade improvement program, infrastructure investment and beautification programs. New residents find that West Chicago is an eclectic city, with housing options ranging from affordable apartments and quaint bungalows to delicately restored classic Victorians and stately custom-built manor homes.

Gateway Centre is the city’s eastern gateway commercial district, located west of Route 59. This area bridges new development with historic downtown amenities and includes a mixture of retail, lofts and condominium uses. It is just steps away from the city’s Metra station — and from two historic former train stations, one of which still bears the name “Turner Junction” and one of which houses the offices of the Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce. Beautifully preserved and revived buildings here house local businesses while telling the tale of West Chicago’s individual personality. In the heart of the downtown area, the West Chicago City Museum offers visitors a peek at the city’s rich history. An arts center hosts programs and exhibits. Local art lovers frequent Gallery 200, a cultural initiative supported by the city government and People Made Visible, to buy and browse local art and to enjoy events such as featured-artist receptions, local-music nights and gallery theater productions. Concerned about a high rate of obesity in the community, even among children, city leaders recently began a project called Healthy West Chicago. Funded by the city, United Way, Northwestern Medicine and American Cancer Society, the project is working to increase residents’ awareness of healthy eating and increased physical activity — as its organizers say, “to help residents make the healthy choice the easy choice.”

WINFIELD

T

he Village of Winfield’s small-town atmosphere, rich in natural beauty and easily accessible to services, good schools and retailers, makes the village a popular choice to raise a family. With some 9,500 residents, this peaceful and prosperous town is less than an hour from downtown Chicago via a Union Pacific West Line commuter-rail station located in the village. And the village’s earliest history was centered on that railroad line. When completed in 1849, what then was known as the Chicago & Galena Union Railroad was

H itzeman I nvestment S ervices, LLC

the only one extending westward from Chicago. Winfield’s station also became the main shipping point for residents of Naperville and the farms between those two villages. The old depot, now known as “the Besch House,” still stands and has been converted into a Winfield Historical Society museum. The village name reportedly came from the first name of General Winfield Scott, who was the biggest hero of the war between the U.S. and Mexico in the 1840s and became the Whig Party’s candidate for president in 1852.

DID YOU KNOW? The communities represented by the Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce have a history of chambers of commerce dating back to 1952. West Chicago Chamber EST: 1952; Warrenville Chamber EST: 1962; Winfield Chamber EST: 1975, representing over 150 years of combined services to our businesses.

The village includes the area’s biggest medical facility, Central DuPage Hospital. This full-service medical center, with a staff of more than 1,100 physicians, is a nationally recognized, 347-bed facility offering the latest in medical technology and the highest quality in patient care. CDH and its sister Delnor Hospital in Geneva recently merged with Northwestern Medicine, an integrated academic health system with other hospitals, testing centers, urgent-care centers, rehabilitation centers and physician offices throughout the Chicago area. Northwestern is associated with Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine and is anchored by Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. The entire organization has 4,000 doctors and over 26,000 employees. The village government with a $4.5 million economic development grant from Northwestern Medicine is well on their way towards meeting their vision for the future in Winfield. A special focus is trained on the original “town center,” where the village has set up a tax increment financing district to encourage business growth and offer opportunities for retailers, services and offices to locate in the community while maintaining Winfield’s quality of life. The village also recently completed a redevelopment plan for busy Roosevelt Road and has assembled a number of properties there to be redeveloped. Winfield has recently completed additional pathways in partnership with DuPage County Forest Preserve District and was ranked in the top 20 safest communities of their size nationwide. Attractions such as Cantigny Park and Cantigny Golf, the Illinois Prairie Path and Winfield Mounds bring more than two million visitors each year from across the nation. Annual local events include the Good Old Days celebration and the Winfield Criterium cycling race.

The DuPage County Government Center is located along the border between Winfield and Wheaton. It includes the county court system, fairgrounds, jail, sheriff ’s office, and departments of animal control, economic development, transportation and community services. The Winfield Public Library serves 8,000 patrons annually and inventories approximately 35,000 books and publications (including 124 periodicals, magazines and newspapers, references, tapes, CDs and videos). Library staffers answer 2,000 reference questions annually and loan out 73,000 books. Other services provided by the library include story time for preschoolers, an adult reading group and a meeting room for public use. The library also has access to an inter-library loan service from libraries throughout the State of Illinois.

rom a pre-Civil War stage coach line to Fermilab atom smashing and high-tech research, the City of Warrenville started as a classic American small town, but has matured into a center of business, commerce and modern suburban living. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017, the city wasn’t officially incorporated until the unofficial town was already 134 years old. In 1833 the family of retired Colonel Julius Warren moved in from New York State and started the first

settlement near the West Branch of the DuPage River. Soon a plank road had been built to Naperville and Winfield. Warren ran a stagecoach line along that road and built an inn and tavern, which still stands and was renovated in 2002. Today both business owners and homebuyers are more likely to be attracted by faster, more convenient transportation — I-88’s interchange with Winfield Road on the south edge of the city and five Metra commuter rail stations within six miles of Warrenville City Hall. After taking 134 years to grow to just 4,000 people, rapid suburban growth swelled the city to more than 13,000 today. In the south the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor — an array of high-tech research and development offices, college satellite campuses and business headquarters — stretches east and west along the frontage roads of I-88. In the west Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory is famous worldwide as “Fermilab.” It performs cutting-edge research into what makes the universe tick on a subatomic level. But it benefits Western DuPage by offering numerous educational and cultural programs to the public. Fermilab and the Technology Corridor attract a brainy and diverse work force from all over the world. Partly because of them, for example, more than 60 languages are spoken at home by the students in Community Unit School District 200. About 22 percent of Warrenville’s people identify themselves as Hispanic. Incomes are strong, with

nearly 32 percent of households exceeding $100,000. The median age (37.3) and household size (2.7 people) indicate the presence of families in their highest spending years and a town with a strong family orientation. Warrenville prides itself on being a progressive small town committed to working with the business and development community. For example, city leaders realized that a 650-acre former quarry that surrounded the I-88/Winfield Road interchange was an ideal location for both business and residential growth. So they formed a public-private partnership, using a tax increment finance district to encourage developers, and the mixed-use project known as Cantera was born. Cantera now includes residential subdivisions, hotels, banks, a 17-screen movie multiplex, a Main Event bowling and entertainment center, a 100,000-square-foot private fitness center, the Northwestern Medicine Chicago Proton

Center and cancer treatment facility, a Super Target store and restaurants ranging from Specialty’s Cafe and Bakery, Eddie Merlot’s Steakhouse and Rock Bottom Brewery to McDonald’s and Buffalo Wild Wings. Collectively they employ more than 1,000 people and draw thousands of people to Warrenville every week. While that kind of development thrives in the newer parts of town, Warrenville hasn’t neglected its original core area a few miles away. The city has created a 177-acre Old Town/Civic Center TIF District No. 3 to encourage mixeduse development around the modern city hall, library and fitness center. And a new, fourth 300-acre TIF district has been set up to encourage high-quality redevelopment along the Route 59 corridor on the city’s southwest side. One of Warrenville’s best features is its ability to incorporate the natural landscape into the fabric of everyday life. The city, Fermilab and adjoining forest preserves contain more than 10,000 acres of open space and nearly 30 miles of off-road biking and hiking paths, which connect to the Illinois Prairie Path and the West Branch of the DuPage River Regional Trail. Opportunities for fishing, canoeing, cross-country skiing and camping also abound. The modern, 30,000-square-foot Warrenville Public Library was started in the 1980s, then tripled in size in 2003. The Warrenville Historical Museum is located in a Greek Revival former church building, built in 1858 and once used as a studio by renowned artist Ivan Albright.

EDUCATION

C

hildren and adult learners have access to a wide variety of educational options in West Chicago, Warrenville and Winfield — from public to parochial to secular private, and from birth to postgraduate. Besides an array of standard preschool programs, a new partnership between the public and private sectors called Educare of West DuPage works to prepare at-risk children for success in the classroom — and then in life. Offered in dual languages, it is one of only 22 EduCare facilities in the United States. The largest school district in the area, Community Unit District 200, serves 13,000 students in 20 schools all the way from age 3 through high school, and in some cases through age 22. It serves Warrenville and adjoining Wheaton as well as parts of Winfield, West Chicago and nearby Carol Stream. Many of its schools were built at about the same time, in the mid-1900s when Western DuPage towns were growing rapidly and consuming almost all adjoining farmland. So the district has a facility master plan that calls for $154 million worth of capital projects, repairs and modernization at 19 of the schools, including new science lab facilities at Wheaton North High School, a library improvement at Wheaton-Warrenville South High and new elementary libraries. District 200’s statistics on the Illinois School Report Card for 2016 testify to a record of success. The percentage of District 200 students who meet or exceed standards on

the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College) tests and ACT exam is substantially higher than the State of Illinois average. The graduation rate for District 200’s two high schools (Wheaton North and Wheaton-Warrenville South) was 93 percent. And 95 percent of those grads went on to attend a college or other post-secondary institution. Most of West Chicago is served by West Chicago Community High School, part of the one-school High School District 94. It has a graduation rate of 97 percent and a college enrollment level of 97 percent. In 2016 the final phase of improvements were completed, adding state-ofthe-art science labs and integrated learning spaces, and the full implementation of a 1/1 e-learning plan whereby all students are issued a technology device they can use both in and out of the classroom. Many of those grads attend the College of DuPage, the largest single-campus community college in the Midwest. It’s based in nearby Glen Ellyn. COD provides both academic classroom preparations for transfer to a senior college plus many forms of vocational and professional training to meet the demands of DuPage County employers. Wheaton Academy located in West Chicago is a premier private high school and has been recognized as one of the top 100 places to work in Illinois. The county also contains 13 private colleges and universities, plus numerous private and parochial elementary schools and high schools.

rom forest preserves to baseball, from bison to history, and from Broadway shows to big-name rock stars, the Western DuPage communities are in the heart of it all when it comes to having fun. “The Western DuPage area is really a hidden gem and we love being located right at the center of it all,” says David Sabathne, president of the Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce. “From the Brookfield Zoo to Cantigny Park and the fantastic shopping, there’s truly something for everyone to enjoy in the area. There are even great activities for the outdoor enthusiast.” The opportunities begin close to home. The calendar is filled with annual festivals and celebrations in each town, such as West Chicago’s Railroad Days, Blooming Fest and Mexican Independence Day; Warrenville’s two-day Fourth of July, Art on the Prairie and Summer Daze; and Winfield’s Good Old Days and Winfield-Wide Garage Sale. These events bring friends and neighbors together in a spirit of celebration. Besides each town’s plentiful parks and recreation centers, Western DuPage has one of the highest concentrations of forest preserves and biking/hiking trails in the country. Three branches of the Illinois Prairie Path plus the Great Western Trail and DuPage River Trail beckon residents and visitors to climb onto two wheels and enjoy the great outdoors or pedal from one downtown business district to another. The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County operates the Blackwell, Herrick Lake, West DuPage Woods, Winfield Mounds and Timber Woods forest preserves. At the Blackwell Forest Preserve in Warrenville, visitors will find 60 campsites with picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, showers and electrical hookups. Cross-country skiers can use trails in the Herrick Lake Forest Preserve. If that isn’t enough, you can view fall colors, summer blooms or spring flowers in the native woodlands and restored Illinois prairie at Morton Arboretum in nearby Lisle. Morton has 4,100 species of trees, shrubs and other woody

18

plants from around the globe. Are pro sports your thing? A short drive westward brings you to the home of the minor league Kane County Cougars in Geneva, where the admission is economical and the field is full of family fun. Or get onto the Metra train or the expressway and cheer on the 2016 World Series Champion Chicago Cubs or the Chicago White Sox, Bears, Bulls or Blackhawks. Of course, that’s not all there is to enjoy in Chicago, just 40 minutes away from Western DuPage. Three theaters host live plays and musicals direct from Broadway. The Magnificent Mile and Loop offer shoppers a truly destination experience. The city has restaurants with every cuisine from around the world. The Field Museum of Natural History, Museum of Science and Industry, Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium and Chicago History Museum draw tourists from around the world, as do the city’s skyscrapers and Navy Pier. The Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera House beckon fans of classical music. Even closer to home, music fans can hear some of the most famous singers and musicians in the world at the Arcada Theatre in nearby St. Charles, or spend an evening

with the Elgin Symphony, which is often named as the best orchestra in Illinois outside of Chicago. The historic 1920s-style Paramount Theatre in nearby Aurora presents original stagings of Broadway shows, concerts, comedy and more. Its musicals and dramas give downtown Chicago productions a run for their money in the Chicago area’s annual live-theater awards. Located just outside Winfield, Cantigny Park is the 500acre estate that once was home to Colonel Robert McCormick (1880-1955), longtime editor and publisher of the Chicago Tribune. Now open to the public, it is home to 30 acres of spectacular gardens, exhibits about McCormick’s bigger-than-life career, a museum about the U.S. Army’s “Big Red One” infantry division (in which McCormick served during World War I) and a 27-hole championship golf course. Cantigny is a can’t-miss destination for military buffs and nature buffs alike. It also hosts many weddings, concerts, lectures and learning opportunities throughout the year. The nearby College of DuPage and North Central College also offer frequent theatrical, choral, instrumental and musical performances, as well as educational lectures and forums. Movie fans can catch every major Hollywood release at Regal Cinemas’ 17-screen theater in the Cantera development in Warrenville. Added recently in the same building is a Main Event Entertainment center. The complex includes state-of-the-art bowling lanes, multi-level laser tag, video games, billiard tables, handcrafted food and a sports bar. The central mission of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Warrenville is, of course, scientific research. Guest scientists from all over the world come there to work. Fermilab is now the host institution for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment. But Fermilab’s huge campus was designed with the express purpose of contributing to the area’s arts, education and culture, too. For example, the ground over Fermilab’s buried miles-long atom-smashing accelerator ring holds a herd of bison and acres of native plants. Visitors may tour much of the Fermilab campus on

foot, on bike or by car seven days a week. The 15-story lab building and accelerator building are open to the public for guided tours and for various lectures and forums, on topics ranging from how to survive a tornado to the search for the Higgs boson to barn dancing. The Leon Lederman Science Education Center contains exhibits explaining physics research on a kid’s level. Visitors can even fish in ponds on the campus. Western DuPage also is a golfer’s paradise, with courses for everyone from world-class veterans to beginning players. The two championship courses at 86-year-old St. Andrew’s Golf & Country Club in West Chicago are known for their rolling terrain, mature trees and historic setting. Prairie Landing Golf Club, adjacent to DuPage Airport in West Chicago, is a championship “prairie links”-style course designed by Robert Trent Jr. and is recognized throughout Chicagoland as a “5 Star” premium golf experience. Cantigny Golf ’s beautiful 27 holes near Winfield feature a year-round golf academy, a nine-hole Youth Links and amenities usually reserved for members of private country clubs, such as a locker room with wooden lockers, showers and banquet facilities. The Royal Golf Club at Klein Creek in Winfield offers 18 challenging holes on 230 acres of rolling prairie. It boasts a course designed by Dick Nugent, impeccably maintained grounds and an indoor clubhouse. And if winter has closed down the regular courses, Top Golf recently opened in nearby Naperville with a yearround driving range, banquet facility and entertainment venues. 2017 AREA GUIDE & Membership Directory

PARKS & RECREATION

■ WEST CHICAGO The West Chicago Park District operates 11 parks covering 429 acres, and it has been serving the community for four decades. But it attained a whole new level of service to the community in September 2014, when the ARC (Athletics Recreation Community) Center opened to the public in Reed-Keppler Park, at 201 W. National St. The ARC Center includes 8,000 square feet of fitness and workout machines, a three-court gymnasium, a two-story play area called the Treehouse, a walking/running track, a party room, a dance studio, a spin room, a fitness studio and meeting rooms. The ARC Center has quickly become the heart of the community, where individuals and families have found a perfect place to gather and take part in countless programs, events and activities. In summer West Chicagoans can enjoy a cool dip at the five-acre outdoor Turtle Splash Water Park. It includes a

20

12-foot pool, multiple slides, zero-depth entry and a sandy play area. Programs range from tennis, baseball and basketball to disc golf, exercise classes and skating, plus performing-arts projects ranging from a school of dance and music lessons to the We-Go Community Theatre. And whether they live in the district or are just passing through, walkers and bicyclists can enjoy the district’s scenic nature trails. The West Branch of the DuPage River Trail connects to the Great Western Trail along that trail’s way from the Fox Valley to the inner suburbs. The district’s Early Childhood programs allow children age infant to 6-years-old to have fun through a variety of classes including Toddler Open Gym, Off 2 School, Minnow Swim Lessons, Tot & Kid Rock, and more. The district also has its own preschool (the Keppler Academy), where 3- and

4-year-olds can explore, create and flourish. Socialization skills and independence are developed through a variety of daily skills and exercises. For more information on the district’s facilities and opportunities, visit www.we-goparks.org. ■ WARRENVILLE The Warrenville community enjoys nine parks, some owned by the Warrenville Park District and others owned by the city and Community Unit School District 200. Warrenville Park District was officially incorporated as the little Round Grove Park District in 1964, but didn’t really become active and begin expanding in size until 1979. Today it provides open space and recreation programs for 13,000 people — most of the city of Warrenville plus small parts of West Chicago and Aurora. The district’s signature facility is the Recreation Center on Warren Avenue, which houses the FitnessNOW Center, with state-of-the-art cardio equipment, strength machines, an indoor running and walking track, and a locker room with towel service. Preschoolers can attend its Early Childhood Development Center. The district also operates the Warrenville Community Building, 3S240 Warren Ave. It owns two outdoor parks totaling more than 38 acres and leases and maintains six of the other parks. Every month its employees and volunteers offer dozens of classes and activities, on every topic from basketball to martial arts, from dog training to jewelry making, and from cooking to fencing. For more details, see www.warrenvilleparks.org.

■ WINFIELD As in West Chicago and Warrenville, the Winfield Park District is anchored by a flagship activity center building. Located in Founders Park along County Farm Road, the Charles R. Beggs Activity Center houses a preschool, programs for seniors, basketball courts, a gymnasium and classes on every subject from yoga and Pilates to art, music and dance. The WINFIT Family Fitness Center offers members both cardiovascular and resistance equipment. The Beggs Center’s activity room with kitchen facilities, gym, tables and chairs also make that a perfect facility for birthday parties and meetings. Founded in 1978, the park district also operates 16 other park sites on 70 acres featuring multiple playgrounds, picnic shelters, fishing ponds, athletic fields and sports courts. Winfield In Action is a nonprofit volunteer organization that provides baseball, softball and fall soccer programs for children in the Winfield area. The group also offers travel-team programs for baseball and softball ages 10-15. The three-acre Lions Park includes a canoe launch that is the perfect starting point for a 90-minute paddle trip along the West Branch of the DuPage River. Facilities at the other parks include two in-line hockey rinks, sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, a pickleball/badminton court, batting cages, basketball courts and picnic shelters. lose to the airports, rail yards and interstate highways of Chicago, populated by a well-educated and diverse work force, and fortified by local tax increment financing (TIF) districts and similar incentives, many employers have found Western DuPage County to be an ideal place to do business. “Our work force is well-trained and well-educated, yet the cost of living is very competitive compared to suburban areas just to the east where housing is more expensive,” said David Sabathne, president of the Western DuPage Chamber of Commerce. Businesses have caught on to this, adding more than a million square feet of manufacturing to the area in 2016 alone. Many manufacturing, R&D and warehousing operations have been attracted to DuPage Airport Authority’s 800-acre DuPage Business Center in West Chicago. The developer, Centerpoint Properties, calls it “North America’s Most Advanced Business Park.” Ground was broken there in May 2015 for a 300,000-square-foot build-to-suit distribution center for DS Containers and was then increased by 250,000 square feet in 2016. DS Containers is a leading manufacturer of two-piece polymer-coated steel aerosol cans. The DuPage Business Center offers a diverse communication and utility infrastructure, fully improved sites with off-site water detention, and accessibility to key transportation routes. Other industrial newcomers in West Chicago include Simpson Strong Tie and PacSmart, a manufacturer of packaging equipment. Mapei Corp., an Italian maker of tile grout products, expanded their existing West Chicago plant by 450 employees. Combining the strong local transportation assets with the boom in online shopping, Amazon announced in late 2016 that it will build a million-square-foot distribution center adjacent to Warrenville. Two Brothers, a player in the thriving microbrew beer

The largest employer in the area is the Winfield-based Northwestern Medicine network of hospitals, clinics, doctor’s offices and care centers. Northwestern Medicine-Central DuPage Hospital and related smaller facilities employ 2,800 people in Winfield alone, while the entire Northwestern Medicine network of hospitals employs over 26,000 workers across the Chicago area. The company with the most familiar brands on the store shelf, and also the area’s biggest private business work force, is Jel Sert Company in West Chicago. Founded in 1926 and still family-owned, it makes the “fun food” brands of Royal gelatin and pudding, Wyler’s lemonade, Otter Pops, FlaVor-Ice, Mighty Fine, and MONDO juice drinks. All three municipal governments have set up tax increment financing districts and have updated their comprehensive and strategic plans. This forward thinking helps to make it more economical for new businesses to locate in specific areas of their towns and gain competitive advantage in the region. With solid planning and a consistent focus on delivering the very best services to their businesses and residents these Western Dupage communities have created a winning combination of public/private partnerships that will continue to deliver benefits well into the future. Come visit us and let us show you why “Your best life is closer than you think”.

CHURCHES & CLUBS

W

est Chicago, Warrenville and Winfield host an array of religious institutions, churches, temples, mosques, shrines and houses of worship, differing in their beliefs and even in the languages they use to worship. One time that becomes especially evident is at West Chicago’s annual Railroad Days festival. For five years the Glen Arbor Community Church has partnered with other congregations to hold a “Church in the Park” service under the summer sky on Sunday morning when the festival is closed. The 2016 service, at Pioneer Park, was produced in cooperation with the New Life Bilingual Church and was done in both English and Spanish. Besides holding the ecumenical services, Glen Arbor Community Church brings in teenagers from Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin during Railroad Days to do volunteer work such as cleaning the high school football stadium and performing yard chores for elderly residents. Among the area’s largest Christian churches are Wheaton Bible Church in West Chicago, a nondenominational church that has been serving DuPage County for more than 80 years, and one of several satellite branches of the giant South Barrington-based Willow Creek Community Church.

In addition to the Christian churches, the area is now home to one of six temples in the United States where the form of Buddhism founded by 13th-century Japanese monk Nichiren Daishonin is practiced (the Nichirem Shoshu Myogyoji temple in West Chicago). Along the West Chicago-Bartlett border is the spectacular-looking, 27-acre BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir complex. Built of hand-carved Italian marble and Turkish limestone, the mandir is the largest of its kind in Illinois and was constructed according to guidelines outlined in ancient Hindu texts of temple architecture. Besides being used in Hindu worship, the temple is open to public tours. For a full list of religious organizations and houses of worship, visit http:/warrenvillechamber.chambermaster. com/list/category/churches-religious-organizations. Hundreds of civic and professional organizations also call Western DuPage home, providing the chance to do service and charity projects for fellow DuPage residents, network with potential business contacts or other military veterans, advance the arts and music, preserve the communities’ history, enjoy youth and adult sports, or share tips with others in the same profession.
