In the last few months our team here at the TPAC has been as busy as ever navigating a full slate of performances from ballet to Broadway and everything in between. The pandemic hasn’t made it easy, but as John Steinbeck put it: “The theater is the only institution in the world which has been dying for four

Indeed, our team has some of the most resilient and passionate folks in the business. And we’ve recently welcomed several new staff members across all departments. I’m thrilled to introduce two new employees on our Development and Engagement team, both of whom have a background in the arts. Kaylee Barnes Stevens is our new Digital Media Specialist. Kaylee focuses on engagement on our online and social media platforms. She’s often seen around the building with a camera and video equipment creating content for Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. Trust me, if you aren’t following the TPAC on social media, you are missing out! Jennifer Cooper also joins us as our Data and Ticketing Specialist. Jen spends her days training and assisting us with our ticketing and development software, ensuring we can do all of the things our presenters and patrons need. In an office of creatives, it is wonderful to have her analytical mind, technological skills, and calming demeanor. And so, despite recent challenges, our TPAC team keeps going. Our doors remain open, the audiences once again fill the houses and we can feel the joy of the arts is alive and well in Tulsa.

LAUGHS, LOVE AND FUN It’s an American classic: the tale of a failing, difficult actor, taking on the role of a woman to land, yet, another role. “Tootsie,” originally released as a movie in 1982, swept the nation with its hilarious laugh-out-loud story and performances. And now, it’s back, updated and filled to the brim with incredible music for audiences to enjoy all over again. Peyton Reilly plays Sandy Lester, described as the main character’s — Michael — neurotic ex-girlfriend, she gets to have a lot of fun with something that has been all too stressful in the past: auditions. Growing up in a small town, Reilly started off doing gymnastics, but it didn’t take long before theatre and stage performance took over her life. For someone growing up as a gymnast, the stage presented something entirely new and alluring. As she describes it: “It’s not about being judged on how perfect you are. It’s about bringing yourself to the table and doing something fun and creative. I was all in!” But for as fun and creative as the stage life is, it also brings with it a fair amount of frustration and trepidation. Since moving to New York, Reilly has been “auditioning and doing the grind ever since. What’s funny is that’s kind of what ‘Tootsie’ is about. My character is an actress who wants to get a job so
10
M a r c h 2022 I N T E R M I SSION
badly and is so desperate and is going to audition after audition and is kind of losing her mind. We’ve all kind of been there.” “My character can’t get a job,” Reilly says. Coming from the drought of actors not being able to get jobs or work throughout the pandemic, she has a ready-made connection to her character. “That frustration of not being able to work only adds to the gratitude of having this job now and ... sharing this awesome story and my character who is hilariously insecure and neurotic — it’s just so much fun!”
Reilly’s character asks her ex, Michael, to help her prepare for an audition. In doing so, Michael tries to help her, showing her what the character should be. He is so good at it that her character remarks, “You’re even better at being a woman than me!” And so, the plot unfolds. “The show is about theatre; the show is about us, essentially, so we’re really bringing ourselves to the table.” Reilly’s character even sings a long song about all of the reasons she shouldn’t go to an audition, and it hits home for Reilly, who has felt that way many a time. So now, it’s fun to play the part of an auditioner without the stress. Though the show stays true to the heart of the original story, it is also modernized to take on modern-day issues. New characters and plot points help to incorporate the music and make it an allnew experience. So, whether you already love the movie or not, “Tootsie” is two and a half hours of laughs, love and fun!

LIVING A LONGER, HAPPIER LIFE Who hasn’t dreamt of living a long, healthy life? To get there, many have gone so far as to trying crash diets, giving up things they love and taking on stringent exercise routines. But what if the answer is far simpler than any of those things? What if a long, healthy life can be had simply through living in the moment with those you love? Nick Buettner and his brother, Dan, have spent years studying what makes a long, healthy life. And their studies aren’t just hypothetical, they are based off of real-life Blue Zones, or places where people live longer and experience fewer chronic illnesses than anywhere else in the world. Nick and Dan started their careers riding their bikes all over the world, setting records as they went. Buettner notes: “Through that work, what I learned is that there is a lot to learn about the world and your relationship to that world when you leave that environment that you’re comfortable with and listen. That led to what we called the quests.” With their quests, the brothers sought to educate children, seeking answers to questions like, “Why did the ancient Mayan civilization collapse?” Throughout the mid-90s, when the internet was in its infancy, school children would follow the brothers throughout the world to learn about the world and its history. Those expeditions led to the discovery of Blue Zones by the Buettner brothers. 12
Ma r c h 2022 I N T E R MI SSION
Hired by a Japanese company to study the long life exhibited by those in Okinawa, Japan, the brothers then asked themselves: Where else does this phenomenon exist? Through studying these Blue Zones throughout the world, the Buettner brothers have gathered real answers on how to not only elongate life but to elongate a meaningful, diseasefree life. And the answers might not be what you think. Want a teaser? Wine. Wine is involved. Of course, this, as with all things, should be enjoyed in moderation. The Buettner brothers have helped various sites throughout the world
become more Blue Zone friendly. But they don’t do so by just making people eat healthier. They actively work toward giving communities better options overall. Which options, you ask? Join us for Nick Buettner’s talk and find out. And no, it isn’t all about diet and exercise. It’s actually much more interesting than that.
