Art Is a Gift!

Amanda Nichols

Since becoming a nonprofit in 2018, we have been able to expand the arts in our community more than we originally dreamt possible. We have completely restructured our Orbit Arts program, now providing funds and mentoring to other local arts nonprofits already doing important work in the community. We’ve even had our first Orbit Arts Festival, showcasing incredible artistry from our city and beyond for free. The first festival went so well, we’re now planning an even bigger one for this year. We’ve added a TPAC Youth Choir, bringing kids from throughout Green Country together in song. We’ve taken on thousands of pieces of costuming, inventorying and caring for each piece, in order to make them available to our partner theatres. We created an outdoors music festival, Arts in the Air, which is free to the public. Those examples are just part of what we’ve been able to accomplish thanks to you, our sponsors, our donors, and our Luminary Circle members. We can’t wait to see what amazing things we can do together in the coming year. Bring on 2024!

This year, we are putting on our second ever senior musical production! As part of our Orbit Arts program, we work alongside LIFE Senior Services at Southminster to produce a show created specifically for senior citizens, many of whom haven’t had the opportunity to be on a stage in decades. The incredible stories we’ve heard from the performers make the work and money put into these productions absolutely worth it. Last year, we produced Guys and Dolls, and our participants got to perform at multiple venues to packed houses. The excitement from the senior citizens was palpable

12

INTERMISSION DEC 2023

at every performance. One participant told us, “I have done stuff I never knew I would even be able to do. … I never dreamed I would be acting one day on a stage.” And that is just one story. To produce these shows, like all worthwhile things, we have to be willing to put in the time and money to make them worthy of our participants. Rights must be purchased for the chosen show, scripts that are printed in extra-large type must be produced for each performer, costumes and props and set pieces must be purchased for our seniors, and much more.

This year, we are producing the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic Cinderella, and we can’t wait to see the magic our seniors create with it. Another of our favorite programs is Any Given Child, through which we bring every kindergartener from every school in the Tulsa Public School system — thousands of children — into our building for a free theatrical experience. For many of these children, it is their first — and sometimes only — theatrical experience in their lives. The thousands of smiles we get to see and the enthusiastic chatter and laughter before and after the show prove how

excited the kids are to be in the theatre for the Any Given Child program. And when a child smiles up at us and tells us they’ve “never gotten to see a show before,” “never gotten to be in a theatre before,” or “can’t wait to come back,” we’re reminded of how important providing this free experience truly is. If you could see the excited looks of wonder on the little faces of the boys and girls who come into our theatre for the first time, we know you’d agree. And you can help us provide both of these magical experiences and more! Want to know how? Visit the donation page on tulsapac.com!

More than 30 of our incredible patrons got the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to head to the Big Apple with none other than our CEO, Mark Frie. Why is that so exciting? Frie called New York City home for years and knows all the best spots in town, from nightlife to entertainment. He also has the numbers of plenty of Broadway veterans in his phone. No one does NYC like Mark Frie.

16

INTERMISSION DEC 2023

This year, our guests got to fly directly, nonstop, to New York City and stay at one of the top hotels just steps from Times Square. On their first full day in the city, they followed Hamilton’s steps on the Hamilton Walking Tour, explored SOHO and the West Village, enjoyed a pre-show reception with the TPAC staff, and then watched the Broadway hit Some Like It Hot.

Day two saw the travelers at a matinee performance of A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Story before joining Broadway stars and Tony-award winning legends at a private dinner at one of New York City’s swankiest steakhouses. Extra fun was had at a Birdland performance, a Harlem food tour, and a bar crawl challenge, specific to Frie’s favorite NYC bars. This all-inclusive trip was such a hit, we’re doing it again! But this time, entry will be limited to our Luminary Circle

members. Not a member? You can learn more on our website by going to Support, then Luminary Circle Membership. Access to this incredible trip is just one perk of becoming a member. Membership tiers also include things like access to our brand-new LaFortune Studio, early access to ticket sales, invitations to quarterly events and much more. Plus, your membership fee goes toward our programming, bringing the arts and arts education to all in our community.

The Fabulous LaFortune Step out of the ordinary and into your newest artistic oasis by visiting Tulsa’s newest exclusive lounge, the LaFortune Studio, accessible through private rental or invite only. This incredible, customdesigned space includes a private bar, sitting areas, a balcony level, a dance floor, and a cabaret stage. It is truly unlike anything else you’ve seen in Tulsa and only available to those who rent the space or are Luminary Circle members.

In 1913, just 15 years into the existence of Tulsa, its citizens decided to build a municipal theatre. Now known by the name Tulsa Theatre, the original building began to show its age in the 1950s. Plans were put forth to renovate the Akdar Shrine at Fourth and Denver Streets and bonds were put on ballots to build something new, but the various plans failed as the original theatre continued to fall into disrepair.

Why name something so fabulous the LaFortune Studio? After the fabulous Mayor Robert LaFortune, of course! Not only was he an incredible mayor of our city, he’s also the reason the Tulsa Performing Arts Center exists.

It wasn’t until 1973, when Mayor LaFortune put his plan into place, that something real began to take shape. He announced to the people of Tulsa that Mrs. Leta M. Chapman and her family had pledged $3.5 million, and John

Williams was set to raise an additional $3.5 million, were the people of Tulsa to vote to approve a bond for the remaining $7 million needed to complete the project. Chapman’s and Williams’ gifts were the largest grants ever made to the city, and the public responded by approving Mayor LaFortune’s plans at the polls. Through this historic partnership between public and private funds, the Tulsa Performing Arts Center finally became a reality, opening in 1977.
