Orbit Arts

Our reimagined Orbit Arts program is going strong heading into 2023! One of our favorite things we’ve been working on for this program is the senior version of “Guys and Dolls” we’re creating with our partners at Life Senior Center at East Side.

What is a senior version of a musical? It’s the same great story and music you know and love but a bit shorter and filled with some of the most passionate performers you’ll ever find on stage.

Take Larry Cochran, a local actor who has appeared numerous times in The Drunkard & The Olio at the Tulsa Spotlight Theatre. He will be playing the role of Skye Masterson and will absolutely knock your socks off.

Trust us when we say, this is a production you cannot see anywhere else and DO NOT want to miss.

So how can you see our senior version of “Guys and Dolls?” That brings up another favorite part of Orbit Arts we’ve been working on. The Orbit Arts Festival will take place on April 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in our 2nd Street lobbies and theatres.

We don’t want to give too much away yet, but it will be an all-day multi-space celebration of all things local and artistic. Music? Check. Dancing? Check. Workshops? Check. “Guys and Dolls” senior? Check. An all-out day of incredible performances and fun? Check.

Keep an eye out for more information about the festival. It will be free for all who want to come watch, learn and take part.

Akey theme in Lin Manuel Miranda’s smash hit Hamilton is who tells the story of the titular character. Is it Miranda, the writer and creator of this incredible work? Is it Eliza, Alexander Hamilton’s wife, who lives long after her husband, carrying on his legacy? Is it Aaron Burr, who narrates most of the musical? Or is it the lucky performer who gets to step into Hamilton’s shoes each night?

Really, the story can’t be told in its fullest form without all these key players, plus many others. But of the amazing storytellers we are lucky enough to have in our building next month, Edred Utomi is the one who gets to step into Hamilton’s shoes to tell his story.

Within three months of moving to New York City in 2018, Utomi booked his first job in the Big Apple: a standby playing Hamilton, George Washington, Aaron Burr and Lafayette/ Jefferson in the North American tour of Hamilton. Not a bad first gig.

Returns

Just a year later, he took over the role of Hamilton, which he has been playing ever since. It couldn’t have been a more perfect fit for Utomi. He shares, “I was a mega Hamil-fan before I booked the show. I played the lottery every day when I was in L.A. ... . My sister actually won the lottery, but I couldn’t go... . I remember saying it’s okay that I don’t get to see it, I’ll be in it someday.’

“In the Heights, which was Lin’s first show, was the first show that made me want to be a performer,” says Utomi. Though he had been watching every clip of every Hamilton performer he could find, he hadn’t seen the show until after he was booked to perform in it.

“This show is whatever any audience member needs in that moment.”
HAMILTON Angelica National Tour | photos by Joan Marcus
18 INTERMISSION FEB 2023

The show, besides being from a writer he was already a fervent fan of, speaks to Utomi in a special way, “I think it speaks to me in the same way it speaks to everybody. It is just a very human show. We talk about a lot of things we all go through in everyday life. … One of those things that is most prevalent for me, and I think many others, is: What type of world are we leaving behind?”

Utomi hopes you’ll join him and his cast for the show when it is in Tulsa: “This show is whatever any audience member needs in that moment. Everyday life is hard. People go through a lot in their lives. Sometimes, people need the show to be a form of escapism, just turn your mind off and enjoy. Sometimes, it might need to be a cathartic moment, a specific form of therapy. At the end of the day, I want people to come and get on this train that goes at 100 miles per hour with us to go on this journey and get out of it what they need it to be in that moment.”

QUIZ
WHICH
FAITH PRINCE JASON GRAAE
20 INTERMISSION FEB 2023

Mostly A’s: Ms. Adelaide

Pretty, outspoken, and stubborn — you’re just like Ms. Adelaide from Guys and Dolls! You have lots of feminine energy. The things you are passionate about make you emotional, but it’s because you care deeply.

Mostly B’s: Miss Hannigan

Miss Hannigan is known for being cruel to the orphans in the Broadway hit Annie, but we promise she has some good personality traits! Like Miss Hannigan, you have a strong personality. You’re carefree, funny, and a little sassy. At the end of the day, you just want to have a good time.

Mostly C’s: Ursula

You’re just like Ursula from The Little Mermaid — a power-driven villain! Just kidding. Like Ursula, you are unapologetically yourself. You’re observant, analytical, and confident in your abilities.

Mostly D’s: Anna Leonowens

Similar to Anna from The King and I, you have a calm demeanor. On a night out, you’re the mom of the friend group. It is your intelligence and bravery that makes you so insightful.

Faith Prince portrayed Anna Leonowens on Broadway in 1996. Faith Prince portrayed Ursula on Broadway in 2009. Faith Prince portrayed Miss Hannigan on Broadway in 2013.
21 INTERMISSION FEB 2023
Faith Prince originated the role of Ms. Adelaide on Broadway in 1992.

Cinderella A Story a a a a

Did you know the story of Cinderella dates all the way back to Ancient Egypt? The Greek geographer Strabo transcribed the story of Rhodopis, a poor slave girl who changed her fate by marrying the king of Egypt, around 7 BC, which is thought to be 500 years after the story was first told.

Since then, various versions of a poor girl who marries into royalty have been told thousands of times. Two of those versions will be on our stages this month and next month when Tulsa Ballet presents their telling of “Cinderella” and TPAC Presents: Imagination Series presents “Cenicienta: A Bilingual Cinderella Story.”
