TPAC update

In the Room where IT happened

In December of 2015, I was in New York City on a business trip securing funding for the small oil and gas company of which I had the pleasure of being the controller. After a successful trip, I decided to stay an extra day to see the little known new musical Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers Theater. Hamilton was like nothing I had ever experienced before and ended up changing my life forever. After the final bow, and with tears in my eyes, I called my husband to let him know I would be dedicating my life and altering my career in oil and gas to somehow impact the lives of others through art.

Fast forward to August of 2019, I had taken my shot and accepted the job as chief financial officer of the TPAC and was in the packed audience of Chapman Music Hall again watching Hamilton. What comes next is a tragedy. The TPAC was forced to close for 15 months.

Who lives, who dies, who tells our story

Our team came back after that tragedy stronger than ever and fully devoted to providing arts for all. From hosting every Tulsa Public Schools kindergarten student to a fully produced performance in the Williams Theater in our Any Given Child program to helping the Northside Performing Arts Community obtain their 501c3 nonprofit status in our Orbit Arts program, what we’ve been achieving is what I hoped my life would be that cold night in December walking out of the Rodgers Theater. I am proud of what the TPAC’s dedicated staff and board have accomplished since the pandemic and can’t wait to be a part of the legacy of art impacting the vitality of our community in the future. I hope you all join us as we continue to tell our story.

It isn’t every day we get to welcome back a local performer to our Chapman Music Hall stage. A few years back, Theatre Tulsa presented Ragtime in the John H. Williams Theatre. Michael Andreaus blew audiences away in the role of Coalhouse Walker. In April, he returns to the TPAC, but this time, he will grace the Chapman stage in the national tour of Ain’t Too Proud.

Andreaus, an Oklahoma native, grew up singing every chance he was given. On a whim, he auditioned for a local production of Dreamgirls and was unexpectedly cast as a lead. Of that experience, he notes, “I didn’t even really know what I was doing in that first role. I didn’t know how to audition; all those things you’re supposed to know, I had no clue.’

“I had known of musical theatre, but it didn’t feel like a world I could be a part of. I didn’t have a lot of exposure to the type of works people of color did, so I didn’t really think that there was a place

for me in that world. But I went and saw the movie Dreamgirls … I saw that movie, and I was like ‘Oh, wait, this is something I might be able to do.’ I loved to sing and perform, but I didn’t really see myself as a recording artist, but I loved to perform and act, so finding a way to combine the two was eye opening for me. I auditioned [for Dreamgirls] expecting to maybe get put in the ensemble … but they gave me a lead instead, so I was thrown right into the fire.”

Learning the ropes of musical theatre took a lot of work for Andreaus, and he soon realized that to live in this world, education would be key. He was accepted into and earned a degree in musical theatre from the University of Central Oklahoma.

Shortly after graduating, he moved to New York City, earning roles both on and off Broadway. Coming back from the global shutdown that was Covid, the national tour of Ain’t Too Proud was his first booking back and first national tour.

Michael Andreaus RETURNS TO THE TPAC

A huge fan of the show and the role he plays, Andreaus is honored to help tell the story of The Temptations. The highlight for him, however, is the amazing group of people he gets to share the stage with each night. “I love the people I get to sing and perform with every night, and I can’t wait to share that with Tulsa,” he says.

Being far from home, away from friends and family and the comforts of home, reminds Andreaus of a line from the show, “There is no progress without sacrifice,” which rings particularly true for him. However, sharing this incredible story with audiences all over the country makes it all worth it for him. We hope you’ll choose to share it with him as well!

“I love the people I get to sing and perform with every night, and I can’t wait to share that with Tulsa.”

Richard Dreyfuss

Most everyone knows the name Richard Dreyfuss. His incredible acting career has been full of huge hits and awards. However, it turns out, there is much more to this storied celebrity than his roles on the screen and stage.

Dreyfuss’ family has quite the history. His great-aunt was part of the assassination that took the life of Czar Alexander in 1881. Dreyfuss’ grandmother was a witness to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, surviving what more than 100 ladies did not and sending her into the arms of the Socialist party.

Coming from a family so rich in history and activism, Dreyfuss has always had a love for the past and the workings of government. Growing up, he realized that political differences between neighbors dissolved after fighting together in World War II. Soldiers came home and decided to put their differences aside. “They all came back American,” he notes.

But somewhere along the line, that solidarity has been lost. To Dreyfuss, the biggest cause of our current schism lies in the changes in our education system that occurred after the war ended. “From 1972 on, we lifted the teaching of civics, which is the reason to have public education in America — to turn students into citizens — and something went awry,” he shares.

Dreyfuss says, “We really did create the most important political revolution in the history of humankind, and it is not something we can afford ever to forget, and that is what happened.” He believes that when we stopped teaching civics — the ins and outs of our government, Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, etc. — we created a downward spiral in our country.

To Dreyfuss, the loss of this education has led to the loss of understanding how special this country is and how

22 INTERMISSION MAR 2023

Americans really changed the way the masses live and interact with their leaders. That loss has led to decay in our civil society, he says.

To help right this wrong in our educational system, Dreyfuss founded the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization The Dreyfuss Civics Initiative. This organization seeks to revive the teaching of civics in schools across America to empower students to be better citizens and understand their place in their country.

Hear Dreyfuss speak on this incredible organization and why educating Americans about government helps to develop the critical thinking skills young people will need to become effective leaders.

“I teach at Holland Hall because it feels more like a big family community than a job. It’s really about the whole child as opposed to testing and grades. The kids have the opportunity to recognize their own strengths and walk their own paths.”

Holland Hall, a PreK-12th grade school, offers a rigorous academic curriculum, but also more than 30 arts classes, state championship athletic teams and a 10:1 student-faculty ratio. Ask about a private tour and tuition assistance.
