TPAC update
From putting on an annual show free to all Tulsa Public Schools’ kindergarteners to huge stage spectacles, the Tulsa Performing Arts Center is making its mark on local theatre, creating incredible theatre. This year, we’re thrilled to be producing our fresh, new take on Fiddler on the Roof. The production will play in the John H. Williams Theatre August 16 through September 1, 2024. The show will feature local actors, singers and dancers, led by a creative team and technicians who also call Tulsa home.
Giving local artists the opportunity to work creatively in our city is an important mission for our team at the TPAC. We’re honored to make this opportunity possible for local artists, and we are dedicated to curating an incredibly special and spectacular production for our community to enjoy.
Make plans to join us in August and enjoy a night of top-notch theatre crafted by your local artists. Fiddler on the Roof is an American theatre classic. Its universal themes and messages resonate so much with our world and the challenges so many continue to face across the globe. We hope families will take the opportunity to share the beauty and magic of this enduring show with a new generation.
As we continue to thrive as a city of arts, the TPAC is proud to be constantly expanding our programs and adding even more art to the already robust offerings both for artists and for all Tulsans. After all, the arts are fundamental: they bring us together and enhance our quality of life and well-being — leading to a better Tulsa for all.

DAWN PoRTER: Telling Tales
American filmmaker Dawn Porter’s career did not start where you may think. She attended law school and became an attorney. When a colleague was hired by a national media company, Porter opted to leave the firm and go too. What started with this media company as a litigious job soon led to a study on whether media storytelling did what it set out to do: tell a real story and get to the truth of the matter.
Through this study, Porter became more and more interested in how attorneys’ stories are told and how the story of our entire legal system is presented by TV series, movies and other media. How, she wondered, could one of the most important professions, the only one listed in our Constitution, be seen in such a terrible light.
Porter points out that most young attorneys become public defenders to do right by people, to ensure justice, so how did they come to be portrayed in such a negative way? Porter also noticed that dramatized versions of legal proceedings failed to hold up to the real thing. She notes: “More than 95 percent of people accused of crimes don’t have a trial. ... Because of Law and Order, you think almost everybody is going to trial. Most people are taking a plea, whether or not they did it, they are taking a plea. ... The United States has the most people incarcerated in the world.”
Currently, Porter is working on a new piece, which documents a public defender who worked tirelessly to get six innocent people out of incarceration. “That shouldn’t be America,” says Porter.
She continues: “I don’t think anybody who loves America should be proud of that. We want a just system, not just a system.”
To Porter, this problem is at the core of the perception most people have of attorneys and public defenders. The problem doesn’t stem from corrupt and lying lawyers; the problem stems from the unjust system itself.
Many public defenders are only in their 20s, working their first jobs, Porter notes. They often have upward of 100 cases ongoing at any given time. Those 100 cases mean 100 names, tied to 100 people, tied to 100 families, all demanding time and energy to save their loved ones. Porter asks, “Could you do a good job?” Considering those circumstances, most would be doubtful at best.
That is where, for Porter, the importance of as-true-to-reality-as-possible storytelling comes in. Her first film, Gideon’s Army, was started out of an interest in telling the stories of the three litigators she follows, not out of a love for filmmaking. In fact, at the time, she thought that would be her only film. Lucky for all of us, the love of storytelling through film wasn’t done with her after the completion of her first documentary.
While her films haven’t all been focused on public defenders or lawyers themselves, it is the stories that draw Porter in. She says: “I love stories that tell you something about something you think you know. We think we know what being a public defender is, but we don’t really know anything about it.”
“There are stories everywhere,” She continues: “What would you want the rest of the world to know about where
you come from, the beauty and the tragedy? You’re in the best position to tell authentic stories about the place where you come from. We all have pride and regret about the places we come from, but we all want to be seen. ... Interview your grandparents, interview your parents. That’s what is going to tell a fuller picture of America. I believe we are more alike than divided, and I think storytelling can help us get to that place where we remember ‘I can disagree with you politically, but I can respect you as a person.’ I hope that storytelling helps that.”
Join us as this incredible storyteller tells us more about her distinct viewpoint from behind the camera.

RETURN TO NYC
Last year, more than 30 of our incredible patrons got the oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to head to the Big Apple with none other than our CEO, Mark Frie. Why is that so exciting? Frie called New York City home for years and knows all the best spots in town, from nightlife to entertainment. He also has a long list of Broadway stars in his contacts list. No one does NYC like Mark Frie.
Our guests got to fly directly, nonstop, to New York City and stay at one of the top hotels just steps from Times Square. On their first full day in the city, they followed Hamilton’s steps
on the Hamilton Walking Tour, explored SOHO and the West Village, enjoyed a pre-show reception with the TPAC staff, and then watched the Broadway hit Some Like It Hot.
Day two saw the travelers at a matinee performance of A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Story before joining Broadway stars and Tony-award winning legends at a private dinner at one of New York City’s swankiest steakhouses.
Extra fun was had at a Birdland performance, a Harlem food tour, and a bar crawl challenge, specific to Frie’s favorite NYC bars.
Last year’s New York City travelers in Time’s SquareWhat did our guests have to say about their trip?
We can give you a few examples.
“Thank you all for the wonderful NYC experience. We so enjoyed all the activities that were so thoughtfully planned. ... For me, the chance to experience NYC for the first time could not have been better.”
“Thank you for your hard work in planning a good variety of experiences. The staff was fabulous and so enjoyable to get to know on a more personal level.”
“Thank you for the great time I had in NYC. You had a good balance of free and booked time for us. The tour was terrific!”
“The trip was fabulous!”
This all-inclusive trip was such a hit, we’re doing it again this year! But this time, entry will be limited to our Luminary Circle members. Not a member? You can learn more on our website by going to Support, then Luminary Circle Membership.
