I have great news! After a successful first season, the TPAC Youth Choir is returning for the 23–24 season. Last season, the TPAC Youth Choir sang at touring artists’ concerts, before a Tony-award-winning performer’s cabaret, and even at Tulsa Mayfest! We hope to continue to expand our performance opportunities in the 23–24 season with a hopeful return to Mayfest and a possible pre-game performance at an FC Tulsa game! While we work to learn new music and expand our knowledge and literacy of music and rhythm, we are also doing these things together, as a unit. This method has been proven time and time again to increase the understanding of new material and decrease the need for discipline during instructional time.

The school season is incredibly stressful for kids and parents alike, and what better outlet is there than making music with peers? The TPAC Youth Choir meets twice a month for two hours, and the first rehearsal was September 11 at 6:00 p.m. in the Westby Pavilion at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center.

And there’s better news: there is still time to join us! Do you have a singer or performer ages 11 to 18 who might benefit from this program?

Visit www.tulsapac.com/youth-choir for more information and to submit an audition!

BRIAN UNTIL THE END OF TIME GREENE

Doing interviews for Tulsa Town Hall can be extremely intimidating but learning that Brian Greene is a quantum and theoretical physicist — not to mention a past professor of physics for Cornell University — seemed even more daunting than usual. What could a little writer from Tulsa ask a theoretical physicist?

Luckily, the fears faded as soon as Greene started talking. He is not, as expected, at all intimidating or even difficult to talk to. In fact, he was very easy to talk to, listen to and understand. Of course, that is what he is known for, and that is why so many choose to have a theoretical physicist and mathematician speak to non-scientists to explain incredibly complex theories.

Greene’s ease at explaining huge ideas to thousands of people might come, in part, from his father. A high school dropout, his father became a musician and entertainer. Perhaps that performance gene found its way into the next generation, giving Greene not just the talent to create a performance

space all his own but also peel back the layers of science in a way that a high school dropout can absorb.

The presentation Greene is bringing to Tulsa next month is called Until the End of Time. The synopsis sent reads as follows: “Travel to the edges of time and space with Brian Greene for a one-of-akind presentation that will transform the theater into outer space, utilizing visual imagery to bring science to life. Brian will guide guests through an odyssey from the Big Bang and far into the future about how humans have failed and triumphed in our quest for cosmic understanding. Attendees will leave inspired and in wonder for the role that science plays in all aspects of our lives.”

According to Greene, this topic is important for Tulsans because it gives “people an idea of how they fit into the cosmic perspective. You know, where they fit into the grand whole; to give them a sense of how the galaxy and the universe and the planet got here and where it might be going and the wondrous things

16 INTERMISSION OCT 2023

happening at the cutting edge of science that are revealing a reality much richer than you would expect based on everyday life. … I want to give people that sense of wonder but in a way that allows them to illuminate their own life in a different way.”

For Greene, the goal isn’t to change the way people see their lives but to add additional perception on a microscopic level, which connects them to everything in the universe. The goal, for Greene, is also not to put science at odds with God or religion.

“The only time when religion and science come into tension is when one blends the intent of science with the intent of religion,” says Greene. He continues, “But I don’t think that their intents really do point to the same arena. Science wants to understand the mechanism of how the world and the planets and stars and people have come to be — the deep physical innerworkings. That’s not really why most people find religion to be a valuable part of their lives. … If you can allow those values to intertwine and interface to make your life better, that’s a good thing.”

Whether you love science and physics or just want to spend a morning in wonder at the workings of the universe, join us in the Chapman for what promises to be an intriguing topic.
