Leaders with Heart
ENTHUSIASTIC. CHARISMATIC. CHARITABLE. One way Wanor Franca demonstrates appreciation for all the great mentors who have influenced him is by being one himself. Over the years, he has worked with Volunteers of America and helped hundreds of teenagers as an ambassador through the Rotary Foundation’s foreign exchange program.
“I learned that as a volunteer, I could make a huge difference in the life of a child. It is very important for children to know they can count on us,” Wanor says. In 1995, Wanor came to the United States as a Rotary foreign exchange student from Brazil. His father was the chairman and worked for the Rotary in Brazil for over 30 years. “My dad is one of my heroes, and he always taught me to live by the Golden Rule and treat others the way I want to be treated. My parents always inspired me to help others.” Having lived in China and Singapore and been an expat in South America, Wanor feels thankful for opportunities received and lucky to have lived in Tulsa the past 22 years. Today, Wanor is a partner and Chief Revenue Officer for Casino Cash Trac, a Tulsa-based company that provides an award-winning suite of tools to help casinos maximize productivity and efficiency. He and his wife Raegan have
two sons – a high school freshman and another who is attending Wanor’s alma mater, the University of Oklahoma. “I realize that we only have a small window of time while our kids are young,” Wanor says. “We have to prioritize being an amazing parent and leader … and be there to teach and guide our children. My most important job in life is to be a great husband and dad for my family.” Wanor and the partners of Casino Cash Trac feel strongly about working with charities and have worked closely with United Way, Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma and Youth Services of Tulsa. “Every year we work with a chosen foundation the employees pick. We feel that if it is important to them, it is important to us.”
“Wanor has a strong work ethic, an infectious personality, and has built a remarkable worldwide career. He is the best salesman I have ever known,” says Tom Bennett III, President of First Oklahoma. “He is like a superman in meaningfully connecting with people. I met him on the soccer field where he devotes a lot of time with his family. He treats everyone equally.” “We appreciate First Oklahoma’s values, and their leaders truly believe in helping others. This has been very transparent especially the last few years with COVID where we experienced firsthand those strong company values and how much they helped so many families in need,” Wanor says.

ortondale’s pools have been an essential part of the midcentury modern housing division since the 1950s. Run solely by neighborhood volunteers and donations for the past 65 years, both the Club Pool and the 5300 Club Pool urgently need repairs to restore them to their original integrity. Lortondale residents have started a GoFundMe fundraising campaign to ask for support from the broader Tulsa community, to whom membership is open. “If we raise the funds, we can get these repairs taken care of to make sure the pools will be around for the next generation to enjoy,” says Lortondale homeowner Shane Hood. “The pools are also a cool piece of architecture and design, so it’s important for us to keep them open.” TP SEE P. 18 FOR MORE ON LORTONDALE, INCLUDING THE FUNDRAISER.

BOB DYLAN CENTER OPENS
Riding high Elite cyclist Milus Clarke Jr.’s mission goes beyond winning races like Tulsa Tough, in which he will compete June 10-12 in the 1/2 Category. The Tulsa transplant wants to attract more diversity to the sport of cycling. HOW DID YOU BEGIN CYCLING? I have some cousins who have been racing since they were kids, and now they’re pros in California. Their team is called Legion of Los Angeles (Tulsa Tough winners in 2019 and 2021), and they’re just dominating in crit cycling (lapped races on a closed circuit) right now. It just runs in our family. My parents are from Belize, and the main sports there are soccer and cycling. Graduating high school, I wanted to play football, but that didn’t work out. I picked up a bike in 2011. I just got experience from there, and then I stopped for a while. I started back in 2019, got in serious shape in 2020, and then COVID hit out of nowhere … In 2021 everything started back mid-season, and I had a wonderful year. I started my own team (Logistics 918) this year and reached out to a couple people to get some sponsorships. TELL ME ABOUT RACIAL REPRESENTATION IN CYCLING. Everywhere you go, it’s a white dominant sport. (For example) with the Tour de France, I see a lot of Europeans. It’s rare to see a Black person out there racing, unless they’re from Belize or one of these countries where (it’s more popular). Growing up in Southern California, as African Americans our sports would be basketball, football. And nobody would ever think about racing or riding a bike. Because if you want to ride, if you want to race (what parent is going to say) “I’m about to buy you a $5,000 bike,” you know? So there aren’t a lot of African Americans in the sport of cycling, but we’re trying to change that, to show, “If he can do it, I can do it.” It’s possible. FOR MORE ON CLARKE’S JOURNEY, SEE P. 18.

AARON DARDEN TULSA HOUSING AUTHORITY CEO TALKS CHALLENGES. STORY AND PHOTO BY TIM LANDES
W
hen Aaron Darden became CEO of Tulsa Housing Authority five years ago, he brought with him nearly a decade of experience at the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency in Nashville, Tennessee. While drinking a cup of coffee at Foolish Th ings Coffee Co., 1001 S. Main St., Darden recently discussed how THA is combating a growing affordable housing crisis. THA PROVIDES SUBSIDIZED HOUSING FOR ABOUT 20,000 PEOPLE ... through Section 8 and public housing, along with the (Rental Assistance Demonstration) program and our Housing Choice Voucher Program, which is Section 8 vouchers for individuals to be able to take out into the city and find housing. We do a whole lot of other stuff on top of that — things like social services, construction development — and have a fairly large IT department. We touch a whole lot of different things a lot of people don’t realize the Housing Authority does, which is exciting for us. But our main focus really is building better communities and taking care of folks who have historically been marginalized, while also having a big-time focus on deconcentrating pockets of poverty throughout the city. THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE WAITING A LONG TIME FOR HOUSING TO BECOME AVAILABLE ... We have a substantial waitlist for all our programs that range in the thousands. For our Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, a person will probably be on that waiting list for about two years on average before they’re actually selected to be able to go try to find housing. THEN THERE’S FINDING HOUSING ... Even after selection, you run into the issue of actually just having enough housing stock. And the housing stock just isn’t there. For every 10 vouchers we issue, only four actually find a home, and the other six are returned to us. Then they’re kind of left out of luck at that point and either have to 12

reapply or find some other type of housing. So the need is there, and the need is tremendous. THE AREAS WITH THE MOST HOUSING NEEDS ... East Tulsa is one where we would like to really grow and expand, and then south Tulsa — we would love to be able to bring a higher level of affordability to it (because south Tulsa) has higher income levels typically. Not a whole lot of affordable options down that way outside of 61st and Peoria, (and due to its reputation) people typically are not flocking there unless they are just in absolute need at this point. (THA does not operate housing in the 61st and Peoria area.) THA SUBSCRIBES TO A MIXED-INCOME PHILOSOPHY ... We’re trying to really break down those stereotypes and show you can have nice-quality, affordable housing, and it’s not going to decrease your property value. It’s actually going to bring your property values up. There are going to be good citizens in the community, and everybody can stay and live peacefully.
AN EXAMPLE IS THA’S RIVER WEST COMMUNITY ... You had a community of extreme poverty, with just heavily subsidized communities there, four or five, all within a square mile of each other. What we did was go in and tear down two of those communities completely, and we’re building back 430-plus units of mixed-income housing, and some of the best-quality housing you’ll find anywhere in the city. The residual effects of that change, even after just the fi rst phase opening (in summer 2021) is that property values are up, employment rates are up, education, high school graduation and reading levels are up. We’re starting to see income go up. The average income when we started working over there for that particular community was somewhere around $8,000 a year. The average income now is up to about $18,000-$19,000 a year, just from the fi rst phase opening. We have doctors and lawyers and others who live there alongside someone who may not have a job at all. For us that is the model. As we look to move into those different areas of the city, that’s what we’re going to look to do. TP

SUMMER CAMP SERVES BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED YOUTH. BY RACHEL DUPREE
T
his month, Oklahoma children who are blind or visually impaired are attending a summer camp just for them. Founded by NewView Oklahoma CEO and President Lauren Branch in 1998, Oklahomans Without Limits (OWL) is a free summer camp for blind and visually impaired kids ages 8-18. Children come from all over the state, including Tulsa, to participate. “(Branch) wanted to provide an outreach service for our state for blind and low-vision children to have a sense of community and the ability to do what other kids their age are doing,” says Andrea Hamen, family and children’s service coordinator. OWL Camp is split into two: one for younger campers between the ages of 8 and 14, and one for ages 15-18. NewView hosts the OWL camp for older kids on Lake Tenkiller each year, allowing them to participate in adaptive water sports. Campers participate in activities such as water skiing, wakeboarding and tubing with adaptive water instructors. They also fish, ride on boats and practice healthy life skills. “We are adding

kayaks and paddleboarding this year, which will be extremely fun to participate in,” Hamen says. NewView is working on an adaptive sports theme for the younger kids’ camp in Oklahoma City this summer, including archery, horseback riding and rock-climbing activities. The nonprofit hopes to bring in Justin Salas, a para-Olympian rock climber. The OWL camp designated for younger campers pairs every child with a sighted buddy. Hamen remembers a camper named David, who happens to be deaf and blind. David was paired up with buddy Jacob. “Watching David and Jacob bond that summer was a special thing,” Hamen says. Jacob did everything he could to help encourage David to participate. David was scared of horses, but with encouragement he stepped out of his comfort zone and enjoyed horseback riding. He also learned how to rock climb. David’s picture hangs on the wall of NewView’s headquarters in Oklahoma City, Hamen says. “It’s a great reminder for me of what our camps are all about.” TP
Melinda Curren peered over one of Shades of Brown’s handmade mugs on the October 2012 cover of TulsaPeople. Nearly a decade later, the coffee shop owner still makes the ceramic mugs with her mother, artist Marcia Borum. The pair meet twice a week to throw mugs, firing 40-60 every two to three months in Curren’s backyard kiln. Curren was 25 when she opened Shades in 2004 at 3302 S. Peoria Ave. “I was very lucky to have grabbed that corner spot because it’s been really good for me,” she says. Initially Curren hired Linda Coward at Brookside Pottery to make the shop’s mugs. “Then we learned from her and took over,” Curren says. At some point the vessels became iconic, and for 15 years Shades has sold them to customers. The mugs join other locally made products on Shades’ retail wall. “It started with selling art,” Curren reflects. “Then it grew into different people I would meet and go, ‘Oh, you make jewelry. Oh, you make soap. I’ll sell it at the shop.’ I just wanted to keep things local and to try and support other artists or makers.” Lately Curren has been using her artistic side to help husband Zach design an expansion of his sandwich shop, Trenchers Delicatessen, at 2602 S. Harvard Ave. In June the deli will unveil a full bar along with breakfast and dinner menus to accompany its popular lunch offerings. Though incredibly busy, the pair are quite a team in the Tulsa food scene. “I get his paninis to sell and his coffee cake, muffins, scones and cookies,” she says. “I supply his coffee, teas and anything else that I can, and so we help each other.” Curren also is making Trenchers’ mugs. — MORGAN PHILLIPS

MEET GATHERING PLACE’S NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. BY JANE ZEMEL
I
f the definition of “tough act to follow” is taking over a facility already voted USA Today’s Best New Attraction in 2019 and Best City Park in 2021, Julio Badin — the new executive director of Tulsa’s Gathering Place — is the guy for the challenge. His employer likes his customer experience background with Disneyland Resort and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport. Badin likes the park’s focus on community and the idea it belongs to everyone. “Where do we pay?” is one of the most common questions asked at the park. Badin answers happily that there is no admission fee, and programming and the playground are all free. And food options are varied. It’s his job to make sure all those moving parts keep moving. “It takes a Herculean effort to maintain the facilities and horticulture,” says the 54-year-old Colombia native, who took over for Tony Moore in August 2021. The fi rst priorities for Badin are culinaryfocused. Vista Restaurant at the Boathouse is open again and hosting catered events. Redbud Cafe offers new menu items, while the best seller — the one-scoop ice cream cone — is still under $2. The Patio serves up burgers, salad bowls, kids’ meals and more.

Free boat rentals are back for summer weekends. The new pedestrian bridge, recently dubbed Williams Crossing, should be ready for foot traffic next year. And neighboring Discovery Lab opened in January. More good news: “On most days we have capacity for parking,” Badin says, citing the gravel lot at East 33rd Street and Riverside Drive. For weekends and holidays, park-goers can ride free Tulsa Transit shuttles from Tulsa Community College’s metro campus. Badin routinely walks the park, watching kids delight in the playground and saying hello to visitors. He is proud to see Tulsans show off the park to family and out-of-towners. “They do it with such pride and excitement,” he says. Two other venues fall under Badin’s oversight: Guthrie Green, celebrating its 10th anniversary this fall; and LowDown music club, located below Duet restaurant at 108 N. Impressive MEMOR IES Kate Pickering, owner of the Handprint Studio, helps people all over Oklahoma frame their memories through ceramic impressions of hands, feet and even paw prints. She first began her craft after moving in 2018 from Dallas to Tulsa. She called pottery stores all over Oklahoma, but no one offered the service. “I had to teach myself how to do it for my children, and there was a lot of trial and error,” Pickering says. Not long after making impressions for her children and her friends, word spread quickly about Pickering’s skill, and she decided in fall 2019 to launch her business. Pickering’s process is simple. First, the impression is made into wet clay. Then, she creates the piece the client chooses, such as a commemorative plate. She then places the piece in a kiln in her garage and fires it. After the first firing, she glazes it and fires the piece again. Finally, she sends it off to the family. “My most memorable client is Gabe Ikard, the (NFL) football player,” Pickering says. “I did his little boy in Oklahoma City about a year ago. The funny thing is, I had no idea who he was until my husband told me afterward.” Pickering travels across Oklahoma to provide her ceramic skills. Along with pop-ups in children’s and home stores, customers can book in-studio dates on June 25, July 9 and Aug. 27 online at thehandprintstudio.com. — RACHEL DUPREE

SENSE OF COMMUNITY, PRESERVATION TAKE PRIORITY FOR LORTONDALE HOMEOWNERS. BY HANNAH MARSHALL
T
ulsa is home to many hidden gems. The historic Lortondale neighborhood, located near East 21st Street and South Yale Avenue, is one treasure that’s unique to Tulsa in both look and feel. Lortondale is a pocket of over 200 midcentury modern style homes designed by local architect Donald Honn and built by developer Howard Grubb in the mid-1950s. These distinctive houses feature flat roofs, a modest exterior and floor-to-ceiling windows on the back wall — a midcentury modern style inspired by developer Joseph Eichler. When the homes were built, the design attracted many architects, professors, artists and musicians to the area, according to Shane Hood, a Lortondale homeowner. Each Lortondale home is architecturally significant and rare, which creates a bond among its residents. “We are all very like-minded,” says Christy Thames, also a Lortondale homeowner. “We

adore our homes, and we do everything we can to preserve and protect them because we understand the rarity of having this style of home in Tulsa.” The neighborhood is seeking National Register of Historic Places status. Lortondale was designed with intention — a place where residents could interact with one another and spend time together. This spirit of community lives on even today. Neighbors often come together to have parties and barbecues in Darlington Park or swim with their families. The neighborhood has two pools: the Lortondale Club Pool, the oldest neighborhood pool in the state; and the 5300 Club Pool. These are considered private clubs since they don’t receive funding from the city, but anyone is welcome to join as a member. “The neighborhood pools have always been a place where people have hosted special events and gatherings,” Thames says. “There’s a lot of history there.” TP
After graduating from Union Public Schools, Milus Clarke Jr. fell in love with the dichotomy of cycling: going fast while experiencing the peacefulness of the ride. He won a few state championships and moved from category four to three in competition. His future looked bright. Unfortunately, Clarke says he and his friends made some bad decisions. At age 21, he was convicted of robbery with a firearm and was incarcerated for six-and-a-half years on an eightyear sentence. “My 20s went down the drain — my prime years,” he says. In prison Clarke reflected on the man he wanted to become. Two weeks after his release in October 2019, he was back on his bike with renewed focus. The pandemic impacted cycling events worldwide, but he returned to competition in 2021 and started his own team, Logistics 918, this year to focus on recruiting more diversity into the sport. “Another reason I created my team is because I want to give other guys and other African Americans like myself at a young age a different outlet to put their time to use doing something productive rather than something negative that can cost you half your life,” says Clarke, now 30 and a father of three. “I just want to be that good role model people can look toward and be like, ‘Man, if he can do it, I can do it.’ Whether it’s racing or just being a good human being, just being a good example for our youth.” — MORGAN PHILLIPS

‘OKLAHOMA!’ REMAKE TAKES A NEW SPIN ON A STATE CLASSIC. The musical that taught the world our state’s theme song returns this month to Tulsa, but this rendition of the offBroadway play revamps an old classic with fewer frills. Sasha Hutchings, who plays lead Laurey Williams — a farm girl with two suitors vying for her affections — says orchestrations are rearranged, but the song lyrics, characters and the musical’s dialogue in Daniel Fish’s “Oklahoma!” are the same as the original. “I think it allows you to hear instruments, dialogue and songs in ways you maybe have never experienced,” she says. The characters trade puffy stage dresses for flannel shirts and blue jeans. Hutchings notes the set is stripped down for a more intimate performance, with few set changes and dynamic lighting. Hutchings, from Georgia, is the only cast member with Sooner State ties. She graduated in 2011 from Oklahoma City University where she started her professional stage career. “One of the first things we did (at OCU) was learn the state song for the Centennial (2007) production ... I was introduced to not only the show itself, but what it meant and what it means to the state,” Hutchings says. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” was adapted from Claremore native Lynn Riggs’ play “Green Grow the Lilacs,” a successful Broadway show that gave audiences a taste of regional folk music — and regional 20

folk. Riggs, a Cherokee citizen and gay man, shared stories of everyday people in his work. The 1955 film adaptation of “Oklahoma!” sports a cast of white actors, unlike Fish’s new production. Hutchings, a Black woman, says the diversity of the new cast inspires exploration of the complex social themes in Riggs’ plays, even challenging the way we see history. Though the show is fun and familiar, one of the main differences is that it can leave the audience with hard questions to answer. “(Do communities) need to create a villain, an outsider, to be able to exist and have unity among ‘the other?’” Hutchings asks, referring to Jud Fry, the play’s antagonist. Fry’s role in the story can reveal truth about how we see “the other,” Hutchings says. “It asks a lot of questions that I think are unpleasant to sit with — truths that are unpleasant to sit with — but for me as an artist, if we’re not doing that, then what are we doing?” she says. “We’re here to get better, to evolve, change and grow.” — BLAYKLEE FREED JUNE 17-19 “OKLAHOMA!” Showtimes are 8 p.m., June 17; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., June 18; and 1 p.m., June 19. ‘SIX’ LEADS CELEBRITY’S BROADWAY SEASON Celebrity Attractions recently announced its 202223 Broadway season will begin Nov. 22-27 with “SIX,” a musical focused on the six wives of Henry VIII that remixes historical heartbreak with 20th century girl power. “Excited is an understatement as we announce this incredible lineup of shows,” says Kristin Dotson, CEO of Celebrity Attractions. “‘SIX’ is currently the hottest new show on Broadway, and the fact that Tulsa has a stop so early on the first national tour speaks to how well we support Broadway in this town. Add the highly anticipated return of ‘Hamilton’ and ‘Disney’s The Lion King’ and more — we are in for a full season of amazing entertainment.” Celebrating its 50th anniversary, “Jesus Christ Superstar” returns to Tulsa from Jan. 24-29. The phenomenon known as “Hamilton” takes the story of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton put to a catchy score that blends musical genres. It returns to Tulsa for a second time March 7-19. From April 4-9 “Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations” tells the story of these Rock and Roll Hall of Famers with their hits such as “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone.” The landmark “Disney’s The Lion King” will be in Tulsa June 1-17 next year. SAND SPRINGS COUPLE HAS BIG PLANS FOR DISCOVERYLAND PROPERTY. BY LUCAS BRADLEY

M
any Tulsans have fond memories of Discoveryland, where so many of us spent a few summer evenings watching performances of “Oklahoma!” The community theater tradition dates back to 1978, with more than 100,000 visitors attending performances annually. But after wild popularity and various financial issues, the venue had its final curtain call in 2011. The place sat unused, decaying and forgotten. Now the fi rst weddings will take place June 4 at a new 5,000-square-foot event center — the former spot of the Indian Trading Post building. Sand Springs couple Jason and Kayla Shipman bought the 525-acre plot in 2019 with plans to build a home, drawn to the oasis of wildlife shockingly close to Tulsa. “My wife’s a veterinarian, so we have two of every animal,” Jason Shipman says. “It had everything we wanted from a ranching standpoint.” Their house east of the Discoveryland amphitheater was finished in July 2020, and will eventually become part of the event venue. They have started construction on another house that will be their permanent residence. But it seems neither Shipman likes to sit still. “We started thinking about this from a business standpoint,” Shipman says. “Weddings, par-
ties, those things — there are a lot more of those going on than there are concerts and theater (performances).” The event center’s brick and glass façade complement the landscape with ceilings that soar to the sky, and a giant fi replace evokes a rustic elegance. Shipman now knows Discoveryland plays a leading role in people’s memories. “I didn’t realize how much this place meant to people — the people who worked here, the people who lived around the area. It was really a source of pride,” he says. “It’s something bigger than just Kayla and me. We need to do this right and try to breathe some new life into it.” So far, that new life includes a remodeled amphitheater, including new seating terraces and a new stage; a new timber-frame pavilion; and a renovated picnic pavilion that will overlook an expanded pond. A large peninsula will extend into the pond as an additional locale for outdoor ceremonies. And everyone’s burning question? “We get asked every single day, ‘Are you going to do ‘Oklahoma!’ again?’ We’re not sure how the theater stuff will work yet,” Shipman says. “Whatever we do, we have to make sure we do it really well because we’ll be measured against people’s perception of what it was.” TP

MILO’S BREWS AND BOTTLES TEA AND OTHER BEVERAGES FROM OWASSO. BY MORGAN PHILLIPS TEA TIME FOR TULSA Milo’s is a third-generation, women-owned beverage company headquartered in the Birmingham, Alabama, area. The 76-year-old company operates three manufacturing plants: two in Alabama and one in Owasso (since September 2020). Tulsa Plant Manager Kequan Jimmerson says the company expanded here because of Tulsa’s central location and its culture of investing in people. Although the company has its own water filtration system, Tulsa’s good water quality also attracted Milo’s to the area. GLASS HALF FULL Milo’s has grown its product lines from sweet and unsweet tea to lemonade and other beverages, including zerocalorie sweet tea, a lemonade-sweet tea combination and peach sweet tea. The Tulsa plant ships nationwide, but primarily to the West Coast and upper Midwest. Milo’s has grown over 20% a year for more than a decade and in 2021 realized nearly 50% growth, according to leadership. The Tulsa staff, comprised of 190 people, has tripled in size in less than two years. THREE INGREDIENTS Tea is freshly brewed daily with tea leaves imported from South America. To make Milo’s Famous Sweet Tea, the brew is blended with pure cane sugar and cooled before it is bottled and refrigerated on site in various sizes. Jimmerson says the bottling machine can fill 125 gallons per minute. By the end of summer, production will jump to 375 gallons per minute.

or Tulsa’s original sandlot baseball team, the Rumblers, the Tulsa Drillers program has been like a big brother, supporting the team in countless ways over a shared love of baseball, Rumblers player Bret Marshall Spears says. “The stuff with the Drillers is this wonderful conduit for local baseball serving baseball, local history and local community,” he says. “We’re so indebted (to) and grateful for them.” Last season marked the fi rst Sandlot Showcase at ONEOK Field, the Drillers’ downtown home; the Rumblers and Tulsa Breeze played after a Sunday afternoon Drillers game. “The original ask was 200 tickets, and we ended up selling over 600. You’ve got 40-year-old guys living out this childhood fantasy,” Spears says. “It was just a really special afternoon.” On June 19, the Showcase returns to ONEOK Field with Rumblers playing the Tulsa City Jesters, a new sandlot team formed out of the initial showcase, in a celebration of baseball on Father’s Day and Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African

Americans. The Rumblers regularly practice and play at Lacy Park, 2134 N. Madison Place, which was once the north Tulsa home to semipro Negro League team the T-Town Clowns. “We’re going to try to do some storytelling about the Rumblers, Clowns and Lacy Park,” Spears says. “Their (the Jesters’) name is an homage to the Clowns.” A July 24 Sandlot Showcase will feature the Tulsa Breeze and Tulsa Outlaws. Last July, the Rumblers and 30 Drillers front-office personnel assembled for the fi rst workday at Lacy Park. Aided by $8,000 in building materials donated by Lowe’s, plenty was done to beautify the field, and several involved with the Clowns showed up to tell stories from yesteryear. Members of the Breeze and Jesters also were there to help, as well as local businesses Th ird Generation Electric and Emeritus Construction. “It was a really cool experience to know the history and that what we were doing was keeping those memories alive,” says Taylor Levacy, Drillers director of community relations. The Drillers contingent was led by General
Manager Mike Melega, who sported a ratchet to repair rotting bleacher boards. “They spent the entire day (there), and it was really hot,” Spears says. “We’re super grateful for them and everybody that came out.” The teams will join up again this month to beautify the park with landscaping, removing trash — “anything we can,” Spears says. Plans include installing a fl agpole and painting the field house. Over the past few years, improvements to Lacy Park have included new wiring for the lights after it was stolen, new siding for the fieldhouse, and new city water lines, efforts which would have taken much longer were it not for the Rumblers’ partnership with the Drillers. Ultimately, this collaboration is about celebrating the great game of baseball. “The overall partnership is just sharing the love of baseball for the love of the game,” Levacy says. “It’s the opportunity to know that anybody can pick up a baseball, a bat, and play the game. It’s that love of baseball that’s bonded all of us together.” TP

ELEVATING TULSA
TULSA JUNETEENTH FESTIVAL IS THE WORK OF A SMALL TEAM OF BLACK WOMEN.
“I
t’s really important to celebrate people; it’s important to celebrate culture,” says Lindsey Corbitt, event producer for Tulsa Juneteenth. Known as the longest-running African American holiday, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery and honors African American culture. From its origin in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, Juneteenth has grown into a federal holiday and a nationwide celebration. Tulsa’s festival is one of the largest. “Last year, the numbers exceeded 50,000 over the course of the festival,” Corbitt says. “I think Tulsa’s Juneteenth is as large as it is because people are actually buying into what the city has to offer, which is our people and their individual talents.” The Tulsa Juneteenth Festival, in its eighth year, is a revival of the long-running Juneteenth festivals of the 80s and 90s. Th is year’s event takes place June 16-18 on the Tulsa Authority for Economic Opportunity (TAEO) lawn, 700 N. Greenwood Ave. Corbitt

believes celebrating Juneteenth in Tulsa’s historic Greenwood District is important. “It allows our people to not only experience the Juneteenth festival, but also the history of Greenwood and Black Wall Street,” she notes. “When you’re having an event of this magnitude, what better place to have it than a location that is historic and showcases the history of Tulsa — where we’ve come from, where we’re headed and how we never want to forget our past, but want to allow our past to help elevate us here in the future.” The free, family-friendly festival features music from artists including nationally touring Con Funk Shun and Tulsa favorites, like The Wise Men and Omaley B. “Juneteenth is a time of celebration and connecting locally through a variety of mediums and expressions. Th is year we have expanded our programming on all fronts and are offering art and tech workshops in partnership with some really innovative Tulsans,” says Natalie Lauren,
chair of the visual arts and wellness committee. “Encouraging mental and physical health in the Black community has been a joy of ours. We’re extremely inspired by the community’s response to our day of wellness, which will include yoga, movement, meditation and dance.” Lauren emphasizes the fact that Tulsa Juneteenth is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, with community as a core principle. “A lot of people don’t know that Tulsa Juneteenth is women and minority led. There’s a small team of very brilliant Black women who spend the year planning, executing and investing in this festival not only as a labor, but also as a staple event of our city,” Lauren notes. Corbitt concurs. “We’re all in this together. It’s about the gain for the community, making sure that this event is community-based and for our community, and that they’re getting what they need out of it,” she says. CREATIVE EXPANSION
RED CAT STUDIO WELCOMES MUSICIANS TO RECORD IN A LAID-BACK ENVIRONMENT.
A
music industry veteran, Donnie Wood has worked in nearly every facet of the business. As a bass player, he was part of Stillwater’s emerging “Red Dirt” scene, performing with genre icons Stoney LaRue and Bob Childers, as well as Medicine Show and blues artist Dustin Pittsley. When he wasn’t on stage, Wood worked the production side, running sound for bands and venues. Wood and his wife, Bridget, eventually turned those decades of experience into a thriving business, providing stage, lighting and audio engineer services for events around northeast Oklahoma. A decade later, Red Cat Event Audio and Digital Recording has grown to include studio recording services and an intimate performance space. “I’ve always worn one of those two hats. The whole Red Cat thing just evolved out of getting more and more calls to do live sound,” Wood says of his Bartlesville-based company. When the pandemic hit, live productions ground to a halt. Red Cat, like so many other companies, had to rethink its business model. After some successful livestreams from their 28

warehouse storage facility, the Woods began to look for a location with more space for creative expansion. A move to a larger building allowed them to build out a recording studio and a connected venue. The couple did most of the renovation themselves utilizing the skills Wood had honed over 30 years as a trim carpenter. “It’s really been done with very little investment, but a whole lot of sweat,” Wood says. “My wife and I probably worked 10-12 hours a day for a month straight.” Other than a few specialty microphones and headsets, Wood already had most of the equipment he needed. “I’ve been slowly acquiring and hoarding vintage instruments, like organs and keyboards and things I don’t play but that I really love the sound of,” Wood explains. “I had a lot of the stuff already in a pile, just waiting for the day I would deploy it.” The Woods have already hosted a few concerts at their “Grey Dog” listening room, and several artists have recorded at what Wood refers to as
“Red Cat World Headquarters.” (The facilities are named after family pets, an orange Tabby and a Weimaraner). Tulsa-based Ahna Jennings is among those artists who’ve spent time in the studio. Last year’s winner of the Jimmy LaFave Songwriting Contest, the 21-year-old singer-songwriter is recording her fi rst EP. For these sessions, Wood, who also is Jennings’ bass player, spends time on both sides of the sound console. “It’s a really laid-back environment. You don’t feel pressured,” Jennings says. “Bridget and Donnie are great people, and they make you feel comfortable. It’s great to be able to go into the studio without breaking the bank.” As the world starts to reopen post-pandemic, the Woods are glad they’ve added the new services. “I’m in my mid-50s, and, you know, unloading full trucks of equipment in the middle of the summer just isn’t as appealing as it once was,” Wood laughs. (Nan Buhlinger launched OK Mozart International Festival, aka OKM Music Festival, in 1983 just a few years later.) Harmon sees performances like these as an opportunity to celebrate her mother’s legacy; Naifeh died in 2019. Now, Harmon’s daughter, 16-year-old Lexy Harmon, will be among the youth musicians in the orchestra that night. “I’ve really enjoyed the community we’ve created with THO,” Lexy Harmon says. “I’m honored to grow up with these wonderful generations and friends who will continue my grandmother’s legacy all together. I love all of the performances we’ve done. It’s so wonderful for all of the students.” According to Karen, among the pieces the orchestra will perform that night are some original compositions by both THO coaches and students. “Of course, because we’re a Baroque (17th-18th century European style) orchestra, we’re going to play a Vivaldi recorder concerto, too, with one of our symphony coaches, Terry Pollak, who plays the recorder, in addition to the viola and violin,” she says. the musical backdrop while guests enjoy wine and canapés in Philbrook’s rotunda between quartet performances in the Patti Johnson Wilson Hall. “When I’m ‘background’ music, I try to please all tastes,” she says. “I’ll play a combination of light jazz, classical, pop and Broadway. I try to play music from current musicians, too. People love to hear music they recognize. I always like a challenge, so I’ll also play a few things I’ve recently learned.” Barton will also play June 4 as part of OKM’s “Especially for Kids” series. The Finale culminates a weekend celebrating Mozart with performances in Bartlesville and Tulsa spotlighting local and international artists. The Tulsa Honors Baroque Orchestra opens with a performance on the museum’s terrace while patrons sip cocktails and view art. CONNECTING COMMUNITIES TWO LGBTQ+ GROUPS ARE EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TULSANS.
W
hen Daniel McHenry moved back to Tulsa in 2019, he didn’t know anyone else who was Black and queer. “And I’m a social person,” McHenry says. “I need community, people, I can connect with.” After looking seemingly everywhere, even perusing online communities, “I just didn’t find it,” McHenry says. “So I was like, ‘You know what, I think it’s about time I started something.’” McHenry founded Black Queer Tulsa in 2021 as a cornerstone for that community. “I really want to give something the next generation can hold on to, so they can have a place to call home and just normalize that Black queer experience here,” McHenry says. Though there isn’t a physical location yet, BQT has been busy with community-building events. One of the biggest planned yet is a pride celebration June 10-12: Black Proud. It follows last year’s Glow Up pride event where turnout reminded McHenry how important this work is for Black queer Tulsans near and far. “I met people from (LA), and come to find out, most of the people are Tulsa-native,” McHenry says. People drove from Oklahoma City for the event, too. 32

The group’s mission is normalizing the Black queer experience to promote inclusion, as well as create safe space, Outreach Coordinator Neil Wade explains (see sidebar). That’s why some events, like monthly Sunday brunches, are specifically for Black LGBTQ+ individuals. “To me, (inclusive spaces and safe spaces) don’t run counter to each other,” Wade says, noting BQT’s collaboration with Studio 66, another LGBTQ+ organization launched in the last couple of years. Studio 66 asked how they could support Black Queer Tulsa, conscious of the need for safe space. (One thing that stemmed from the partnership: RuPaul’s Drag Race screening parties at the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center, 621 E. 4th St.) Studio 66 aims to address another need in Tulsa’s LGBTQ+ community: more arts-focused programming. “We support social and community activities and mentor artists, individuals and other organizations,” Studio 66 co-director Karl Jones says. The group sponsored Goff Ball during the 2021 Goff Festival, which celebrated renowned Tulsa architect Bruce Goff, who was gay. Jones, a Tulsa Artist Fellowship recipient,
co-organized the 2021 Goff Festival with Britni Harris and Michelle Svenson as part of his Arts Integration Grant Award. He created Studio 66 with other Tulsans, another project he does as part of TAF. Like BQT, Studio 66 is driven to expand opportunities for the community to mingle. “We’re thinking of ourselves as a production group,” says Jones, who creates events with codirector Chris VanDenhende. “But it’s a community effort. We are relying heavily on all of our friends and everyone in our community to help promote, or sometimes to provide resources, or to create art.” Jones welcomes feedback and encourages those interested in Studio 66 events to put in their two cents. “Listening is a big part of it, and that’s why collaboration matters,” Jones says. “Because if you don’t meet new people, and you don’t meet people who are different from you, then you can’t hear anything.” BQT and Studio 66 aim to expand opportunities for LGBTQ+ Tulsans and make the city safer, and more fun, for queer people. Both groups will march in the Tulsa Pride Parade on June 25.

In addition to forging a presence in Tulsa’s LGBTQ+ community, BQT seeks to challenge perceptions beyond queer and Black communities by being visible and present in spaces that have not always been welcoming or accepting of Black and queer people. “We had a brunch at Queenies, and I personally got a rush walking into the main dining room and seeing a table full of Black folks just enjoying themselves,” Wade says, noting other diners reacted positively to their joy and camaraderie. “Tulsa needs to see that. Yes, there is trauma ... so many of our stories are about how hard it is — the struggle and the trauma.” But, Wade continues, it exists alongside immense joy. “Wonderful things come from our Black queerness, so to me, that’s the best way to put it on display. It’s Sunday brunch. We’re just having brunch just the way you do, and we are doing this as a community. For more and more of Tulsa to see that, you know, in a perfect world, we’re changing a few minds. We’re getting people to think twice about what those words mean to them, Black and queer.” Connect on Instagram with Black Queer Tulsa (@blackqueertulsa) and Studio 66 (@studio.66_) for information on upcoming events. TP
Why is a safe space important? “In creating that safe space, we are addressing a population within our membership where safety means a Black-dominated space,” explains Neil Wade, outreach coordinator for Black Queer Tulsa. “There’s a certain distrust much of the Black community has of the white power structure in Tulsa, understandably so … there was never really a healing from the (1921 Tulsa Race) Massacre. Only in the ’90s were we starting to see it be publicly acknowledged, and there’s still been resistance. We now have this unbroken flowchart of this trauma stemming from this conflict. Creating a safe space for those that are still healing is part of the reason why we limit our brunches to Black, queer members. “The fact is, there are members from our Black community who do not feel safe around white people. That’s just the fact. And, you know, people are like, ‘Oh, my gosh, now? Why? But things are so different!’ Well, they’re not that different. And I think what a lot of people don’t understand is, in the Black community, there’s a huge population of people who don’t ever see white people, who don’t interact (with white people). And in turn, many Tulsan’s don’t see or interact with Black and/ or queer people. This shows the importance of visibility and presence for our community that we seek to promote.”

f you’ve not at least heard of Jean Ann Fausser, you’ve likely benefitted indirectly from her influence in Tulsa’s art world. Fausser serves or has served on the boards of three galleries — Living Arts of Tulsa, ahha and 108 Contemporary — not to mention she’s a thoughtful artist in her own right. Working these days in mixed-media and fiber, Fausser is an eloquent speaker; her careful manner of speech hints at the great focus and many hours that go into her art. She hasn’t shown much solo work in Tulsa, save for a few exceptions — usually group shows. “When I got involved with all these things … it would be a confl ict of interest, (so) I’ve really not shown in those places,” she says. Recently, Fausser curated “From Rising Seas to Honey Bees,” held April 8-May 6 at Liggett Studio, 314 S. Kenosha Ave., where she also curated a women’s show. From June 3-July 24, this year’s FiberWorks exhibition at 108 Contemporary gives Fausser an opportunity to try showing another piece in the town she’s lived in these past 50-odd years. The exhibition is juried (this year by Jane Dunnewold), and Fausser’s hopes are high. (She’ll find out if she’s in the show in mid-May after press time.)

“FiberWorks” is an annual exhibition that swaps each year between Tulsa and Oklahoma City. It’s put on by Fiber Artists of Oklahoma, a statewide organization of fiber artists and their many practices that was founded in 1976. A list of the sorts of artists involved includes weavers, spinners, felters, rug hookers, papermakers and more. Fausser’s entered piece is “Circles of Influence,” which toys with the color wheel amid a deep expanse of black linen. She says it’s a black sheep among the rest of her oeuvre without the strong environmentalist themes which usually pervade her work. Naturally it’s no less mystifying or engrossing. The works that will be on display at the show are the result of much time and concentration, Fausser notes. “One of the things we’d like to be able to do more,” Fausser says on behalf of all fiber artists, “is to explain what goes into it.” She describes the process as “time consuming but ultimately rewarding, and, at times, meditative.” See the work from Fiber Artists of Oklahoma at 108 Contemporary, 108 E. Reconciliation Way, through July 24 during gallery hours: 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Wednesday-Sunday. TP

Six thriving businesses on one stretch of Tulsa’s Mother Road STORY BY RICHARD STEPHENS JR. PHOTOS BY MICHELLE POLLARD
Highway hAvens A WELL-TRAVELED STRETCH OF ROUTE 66 ON EAST 11TH STREET THROUGH TULSA REWARDS VISITORS WITH A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE OF VINTAGE AND MODERN AMERICANA. This portion of Route 66 is part of what makes Tulsa distinct. Tulsa “has achieved new recognition as a cradle of new opportunity for small businesses that want to tie into what makes the old highway so special,” says RHYS MARTIN, president of the Oklahoma Route 66 Association. As Route 66 inches closer to its centennial in 2026, these six businesses are just a sample of the variety travelers see on 11th Street while cruising the Mother Road.

Jordan and Emily Towers
Magic Leaf Dispensary It’s not your traditional neighborhood pharmacy. Magic Leaf, 4210 E. 11th St., is a medical marijuana dispensary that opened in 2019. Some patients request certain products or a specific THC or CBD; they know what they want. For newcomers and those unsure what to purchase, Jordan and Emily Towers, the owners, ask what ails them. “First, we would give them an introduction … as far as what products we carry,” Jordan explains. “And if they are looking for flower … we’d tell them to look for sativa, indica or a hybrid. A sativa would give them energy, indica would be something that would help them maybe go to sleep or just relieve pain, and a hybrid would be a combination of the two.” They offer cannabis flower (the bud to smoke), concentrates, drinks, and a variety of edibles like candy and chocolate bars. Emily notes some of the various health issues licensed customers cite: anxiety, depression, cancer, body aches and pains. Magic Leaf’s staff of nine sees many patients: 792 (113 per day) the week of Feb. 21. It’s busy — there’s often a wait inside to be seen. It was that steady traffic that helped the Towers choose a location on the Mother Road. “It definitely played a role, just being on Route 66,” Emily says. “We knew this road had good traffic. We get a really good mix of (people), and it’s important to treat everybody who comes in like a celebrity.” Now that Magic Leaf is operating smoothly, the Towers are planning to open a second location. 38

Brandy Adkins, below center with husband Dennis, turned her passion for cooking into a business when she opened the original Flo’s Burger Diner in 2014. Four years later she set up shop on Route 66.
Flo’s Burger Diner
What makes Flo’s different? First, “The Bomb.” “It’s a deconstructed jalapeño popper that’s stuffed between two patties topped with cheese, bacon and mayo,” says owner Brandy Adkins of the 14.7-ounce explosion that is the diner’s best-seller. Second, freshness. “We do everything from scratch,” Adkins says. “We grate our own cheese, every … two days, we make our ranch, we make all of our sauces, we handpick all of our vegetables.” A local bakery bakes the shop’s buns. Third, free family meals for people in need. “We do it once a month on a Sunday … from 5-7 (p.m.) or until the food’s gone. There’s no charge, no questions asked. You can’t look at people and see struggle. They may be broke as a joke.” Adkins suggests checking Flo’s Facebook page for Sunday meal schedules. The 1950s/’60s-style interior, matched with music of that era like the Beatles’ “You Really Got a Hold on Me” that happened to play in the background on a recent visit, was inspired by Adkins’ mom, Floette. The diner’s name is a tribute to her, as well as Floyd, her father, and Flora, her great-grandmother. The original Flo’s opened in Catoosa in 2014. After its success, Adkins considered a second location. “It was just time for us to grow,” she says. She polled customers on her shop’s Facebook page. A majority of customers suggested Tulsa. Did she choose Route 66 on purpose? “No, it was just one of the ones that were offered (for lease).” Luck or grace must be with her. After a slow start in April 2018, business at 2604 E. 11th St. picked up after a neon sign was installed and now, business is booming.
Since 1996, Jack Patel, below left, has owned the Desert Hills Motel, which opened on Route 66 in 1953. The motel welcomes guests traveling the Mother Road and has kept many of its retro charms, along with adding modern amenities.
Desert Hills Motel Do you want to sleep in a 1953 motel that kept its original appearance inside and out? “Our property is like a classic motel,” says owner Jack Patel. “We offer extended stay and, of course, daily rates, and a lot of people like to go back in time to see what it was like in the (older) days.” For just $57, ($66 for two people) guests are treated to rooms with free Wi-Fi, cable TV, air conditioning, a half refrigerator, a microwave and objects from bygone times. “The travelers, they are always welcome to experience something different,” says Patel, who has owned the iconic motel at 5220 E. 11th St. since 1996. Motel guests come from near and far — some are Tulsa residents, some are traveling the Route and others are international visitors. “Sometimes they come in classic cars, sometimes they come on motorcycles, in groups,” Patel adds. Outside, Patel encourages visitors to snap photos of the 1957 Chevy parked near the classic ’50s neon sign, which was fully restored in 2004 for the International Route 66 Festival that Tulsa hosted. For 87 years, Tulsans have counted on Burnett’s Flowers and Designs for floral bouquets to celebrate life’s milestones. Today, Hunter Jones manages a staff of 11 from the shop’s East 11th Street storefront.
Burnett’s Flowers and Designs “We deliver smiles,” says three-year manager Hunter Jones. “It is a very happy place. It’s like a big family in here.” His crew of nine full-time and two part-time employees busily process 400-450 orders a week for customers across the Tulsa area. Valentine’s Day resulted in 2,000 orders of flowers and plants. Burnett’s opened in 1935 and has moved multiple times in its decades of business. In 2019 it moved to a new location in the Meadow Gold District, 1408 E. 11th St., in hopes of bringing in more walk-in traffic, Jones says. “I know in the three years I’ve been at Burnett’s we have had some pretty cool visitors going down the Mother Road,” he says. Lead designer Sheila Williams, with 35 years of experience, creates arrangements with flowers mainly sourced from Ecuador. The other 20% also come from overseas, including unique ones like snapdragons from Canada and tulips from Ireland. The team’s love of flowers is shared with customers during its monthly Do-It-Yourself arrangement classes. Jones joined Future Farmers of America in high school and participated in its floriculture competitions and has won two grand champion floriculture arrangement competitions at the Tulsa State Fair. 40

Tally Alame, below center, has owned Tally’s Good Food Cafe since 1987. The retro diner is known for its chicken fried steak, huge cinnamon rolls and down-home cooking.
Tally’s Good Food Cafe
Customers from around the world flock to this retro-style diner with its blazing neon signs. Owner Tally Alame has created a local destination that draws about 1,000 people a day to choose from more than 100 American dishes. He rattles off what makes his cafe different. “This is really a friendly place,” says Alame, who opened the diner at 1102 S. Yale Ave. in 1987. “People love to come here for the atmosphere. We serve good food at reasonable prices. I play the music of the ’50s, and the waitresses and service are good.” Corinna Ladds, a waitress at Tally’s the past few years, ladles out more reasons: “Ninety percent of our food is homemade.” She says the diner’s best-sellers are its cinnamon rolls and chicken fried steak. There’s also a full bar. “We serve a lot of breakfast cocktails,” she adds. Alame’s 40-plus employees are loyal; many have worked for him for 10-30 years. “Honestly, what I like most about Tally personally is the fact that when we’re busy, he … gets his hands dirty,” Ladds says. “He’ll go wait on tables. He’ll bus tables. He’ll get back there and cook food.” And converse with customers and staff. “I do like people. I really do,” Alame admits. “I get to know my customers. I shake their hands.” And those hands come from around the world. “We get people from Europe — from France, Italy, Germany, Spain, you name it. It makes it really interesting.” His advice for a successful business? “The key is to take care of the business and make everybody happy.” Alame is originally from Lebanon. After graduating from the University of Tulsa in business management and marketing, he bought Mark and Mary’s Restaurant and opened Tally’s soon after. “So, I hit the jackpot knowing it’s a perfect corner on Route 66. And it was always my dream to own my own restaurant.” Since opening, Alame has served Thanksgiving dinner free of charge. “I want to give back to the community,” he adds, “to people who can’t afford a meal on Thanksgiving Day. And I have to tell you now, it’s really my favorite time of the year. It’s a time you to look back and be thankful for everything you have accomplished in your life.” A second Tally’s Cafe is at 6100 S. Sheridan Road — it’s another classic diner with a ’50s look.
William Franklin
Decopolis
Decopolis relocated from downtown Tulsa to 1401 E. 11th St. in December 2020. Although it was successful for its eight-year life span, owner William Franklin saw opportunity on Route 66. “There’s been so much buzz about Route 66 and this would be a … better location for us to get more visibility than we were getting downtown. The way our store evolved over downtown has become more of an attraction, an entertainment type thing, which very much I think fits in with Route 66.” Meaning “Deco City,” this world of curiosities and wonders contains theme rooms selling Star Wars and Harry Potter articles, a Western theater room with lots of classic toys and games, a Volcanic Island themed area with dinosaurs, rocks and fossils, a variety of candy, colorful socks and ties, and books from Oklahoma (especially Tulsa) writers and artists. There’s even a small Tulsa Art Deco Museum inside. Decopolis’ unique style suits Route 66 like a hand in glove. “I spent 30 years doing murals and frescoes and themed environments,” Franklin says. “I basically built everything in here. I designed all the buildings and the cave (in the rock and fossil area) — I sculpted that and put it all together.” His art deco paintings and murals hang on the walls. “We try to make an experience, a place that’s magical and fun and interesting and educational,” Franklin says. “We’re making ourselves a wonderful attraction. So, it adds that magic because you can’t get this at Walmart.” Approximately 25%-30% of Decopolis’ sales come from tourists — including regional visitors — and the occasional celebrity stop-in has included Leonardo DiCaprio from “Killers of the Flower Moon” and other productions. he Gadget Co. opened in Tulsa more than 30 years ago, just on the outskirts of downtown Tulsa. In January, the store moved to its new location on South Lewis Avenue near Route 66. “The old place was great, but this place shows our growth,” says owner J.P. Hewitt of the new space at 1207 S. Lewis Ave. “Th is whole area is blowing up. With Mother Road Market right there and NOMA (North of Market Area multi-use project currently under construction) going on, the area is happening.” Hewitt, who is originally from Michigan, bought the Gadget Co. in 2015. The store specializes in outdoor apparel, gear and equipment for things like fly fishing, camping, hunting and hiking. Soon it will add women’s apparel. “I love the outdoors, and I wanted to do something that incorporated that,” he says. “With the new store, we got to customize it all ourselves. It’s definitely an upgrade. We’ve brought in a bunch of different brands. We wanted to give it a new, fresh feel.” The new location is helping the store reach that goal. Along with attracting new shoppers, the new location has brought back some former customers. Hewitt says the store’s broad customer base all enjoy higher-end, higher-quality products. Hewitt says he and his staff also provide knowledge and expertise on the merchandise and equipment, so they can help customers know what they need, and what they don’t. “I won’t sell you something I don’t think will be a benefit to you,” he says. He also wants to the store to be accessible to everyone, including those who don’t consider themselves “outdoorsy” or don’t know where to begin. “We love that. We want them to come in, they’re a blank slate. We can get them pointed in the right direction,” Hewitt says. “We don’t want anyone to be intimidated.” TP

OKLAHOMA DESTINATION BREWERIES TO VISIT THIS SUMMER BY RHYS MARTIN

TulsaPeople JUNE 2022
you want something non-alcoholic. Live music and food trucks are added to the mix during the weekend; check it out next time you’re near the Red River. When you find yourself in Enid, perhaps on the way to the salt plains or the Gloss Mountains, Settlers Brewing Co. is worth a pit stop. The Rowe family transformed a former TV station into a taproom in 2020, though their interest in beermaking dates to the 1990s. Giving back to the community is important to them; one of their monthly taps is selected for charity, where $1 per pint is donated to a local nonprofit. This summer sip on the simple Let’s Get Smashed or Alfred’s Amber Ale, an easy drinking malty beer. Kochendorfer Brewing is run by two families who traveled around the country — and around the world — to hone their craft. Their interest in brewing goes back decades, with their operation in Duncan being the culmination of that passion and experience. They offer 10 different styles of beer, as well as rotating taps, running the gamut of flavor. The artwork on each beer can isn’t the only thing that sets them apart; each design also has a colorful story. Read more about each one at kochendorferbrewing.com/stories. The facility is on a 5-acre parcel that includes a patio, playground and walking trails.
Expedinture Brewery in Okarche
Expedinture Brewery stands in Okarche, the town otherwise known for the fried chicken at Eischen’s. The name isn’t a typo; it’s a combination of expedition and adventure. This operation started as two friends taking a home brew class and has grown into a full-blown taproom. Pick up a sixpack of Meet Me at the Mission Mexican Lager, a crisp brew finished over tequila barrel wood, on your way to Roman Nose State Park. Pryor is the home of Fat Toad Brewing Co., another family homebrew operation that became so popular it grew into a larger endeavor. Coowner David Miller says he was inspired by the giant brewing tanks at Oklahoma City’s Bricktown Brewery. His favorite sip right now is the Mexican lager Sapo Cerveza and These Hops Don’t Lie, a hazy IPA with flavors of mango and citrus. The beer community in Oklahoma is, indeed, one big family. The brewery also is a pizzeria, so come hungry. TP

ince Oklahoma updated its laws in 2010, numerous breweries have fermented their place in the state’s beer scene. Tulsa has a rich selection of craft breweries to pick from — but if you take a drive around the state, it’s easy to work one into your trip itinerary: north, south, east or west. Cooper and Mill Brewing Co. is the first brewery in Bartlesville. A day trip to see the Price Tower or the Tom Mix Museum in nearby Dewey brings travelers to this family-friendly spot that offers activities like shuffleboard and cornhole. Its name comes from a street intersection where Frank Phillips worked as a barber before his big oilman days. Across the street, Frank and Lola’s restaurant is a great dining companion to the beverages you can find at Cooper and Mill. Try the Torpedo Switch, a blonde ale, or the smooth NEOPA (North East Oklahoma Pale Ale). In Caddo is Harbinger Beer Co., a “nano brewery,” which means anything under 10 barrels. Its taproom sits in a renovated building in the historic downtown district across the street from the Indian Territory Museum. Harbinger is known for its Real Chief IPA, which boasts notes of caramel, pine and citrus. The brewery makes its own root beer and cream soda, too, if

David Ream, left, with Trey Marler, president of Craft Body Scan. Ream visited Craft Body Scan for a heart and lung scan and received eye-opening results — a nodule was found in his right lung. He later learned he had stage 2 lung cancer. Today he is cancer free and an advocate for early detection.
Screenings and prevention PROACTIVE APPROACH TO HEALTH SCREENINGS HAS LIFE-SAVING BENEFITS.
I
t is far better to prevent disease than to treat people after they get sick, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s public health journal, “Preventing Chronic Disease.” It makes sense then that taking a proactive, preventative approach to health has recently been trending. Boutique health providers, like Tulsa-based Craft Body Scan, offer a convenient way to screen for chronic diseases and cancer often before symptoms show. “If you go to your primary care doctor and say you’d like a checkup, they’re going to do bloodwork and listen to your chest and send you on your way. And there’s nothing wrong with that; it’s still a very important part of prevention,” says Trey Marler, president of Craft Body Scan. “But we know if we catch cancer or heart disease in the early stages, the outcome is much better.” Marler says the scans can provide peace of mind.
94
TulsaPeople JUNE 2022
“We’re not trying to scare people,” he says. “Our mission is to improve health and save lives, and we do that by finding and detecting heart disease and cancer in the early stages.” Marler notes many Craft patients with findings show no symptoms or can attribute symptoms to another cause, like shortness of breath, which could be calcium buildup around the heart, or coronary heart disease or lung disease. Marler says Craft, whose options include onetime scans of specific organs and annual full-body scan packages, utilizes the same CT technology as a physician or hospital. “CT technology has been around for a very long time. In essence, it’s no different than what’s in the doctor’s office. We’re using the latest generation of CT scan, which is the lowest-dose radiation possible,” Marler says. “We’re making it affordable and accessible for people. It’s $149 per couple for a heart and lung scan, and they also get to meet with one of our providers to go over the results.”
From there the results can be sent to your physician to discuss the best next step. In February 2020, David Ream, a healthy 51-year-old local pilot and father of two, went in for a heart and lung scan. “About a week later, I received my results. It was a little eye opening,” Ream says. “They had found a nodule in my right lung. Within a couple weeks I was consulting with the pulmonary team at Saint Francis. It was determined to be stage 2 lung cancer. I’m now a huge proponent for early detection and taking a peek inside your body.” Now 53, Ream is in remission and cancer free, with biannual CT scans to verify it doesn’t come back. “I think the most relatable piece of David’s story is that he was feeling great and walking around doing his thing and just came in to check on things and really had no expectations,” says Danielle Minnick, director of marketing at Craft Body Scan. “David was able to catch it and get surgery and resume life and live cancer free.” TP

e all need a break, whether it’s from the stress of the day or the havoc caused by allergens and sickness. One way many Tulsans have chosen to alleviate these issues is with a homeopathic eucalyptus shower bundle. At the Gas Petal, 1514 E. 15th St., these bundles are owner Chelsea LeGrange’s year-round bestseller. When LeGrange fi rst opened her truck in September 2020 she noticed eucalyptus frequently sold out. Talking to her customers, she realized they were hanging sprigs in their shower. “We started selling (bundles) because I realized the benefit they provide and how popular they were,” she says, noting evidence eucalyptus helps with sinus and allergy relief. “I sold 20 the fi rst day.” Ever since, bundles can be ordered for $35, available for pickup at the storefront or for delivery. LeGrange asks for a 24-hour turnaround time. LeGrange uses two kinds of eucalyptus. Baby blue is the strongest with the most oil in the leaves. Silver dollar or gunni is added for texture. “We’re a florist so we always want things to look pretty,” she adds. Lavender is incorporated seasonally. Bundles are strongest in the fi rst week and can last as long as three to four weeks. “Every week that passes, it is a little less potent,” LeGrange says. Her biggest piece of maintenance advice is to make sure the bundle is not in the line of direct water because that won’t let the steam do its work. — ANNE BROCKMAN

GRATITUDE BY CONNIE CRONLEY

TulsaPeople JUNE 2022
named Cecelia who told us how the village’s new water pump changed her life. She now had running water in her home. She and other women of the village no longer had to spend about 90 minutes a day carrying water from the “lake,” a muddy water hole with cattle standing in it. Cecelia’s little home was worn and torn but spotless. In the center of the kitchen table, glowing with glory, was a pitcher of water surrounded by four or five mismatched glasses. She saved her greatest hostess gesture for last. Just before we left, she asked us graciously and so generously, “Would you like a glass of water?” I remembered Cecelia when I read Robert Caro’s extraordinary biographies of Lyndon Johnson. While researching, Caro and his wife, Ina, moved from New York to the Hill Country in southwestern central Texas to better understand the importance of Johnson’s bringing water and electricity to the region. The stooped Hill Country women described their posture as “bent,” the permanent effect of carrying water from the well. Caro struggled to haul up one heavy bucket from a 75-foot-deep well. He determined that the average farm family of five used 50 gallons of water a day. Each bucket held 3-4 gallons and weighed 25-30 pounds. A woman made seven to nine trips a day to a well usually located about 253 feet from the house, sometimes carrying two buckets. No wonder the women were bent. Both my grandmother and my
great-grandmother were bent. I thought it was genetic, but now I think it was from their early days on farms without running water. I have a foggy idea of trying to live a simple life without too many gadgets, which is why I have resisted a smartphone. Only recently did I get one and learn how to use the GPS. It’s magic. A pleasant voice directs me to my location, turn by turn. To practice, I’ve had her direct me to places I often go — the branch library, the bank, the grocery store. She gets it right every time! Books, magazines and the internet are full of information about gratitude, why it’s healthy and how it makes us happier. Some psychologists say the best way to improve quality of life is to keep a gratitude journal and list three things we’re grateful for every day. The benefits of experiencing gratitude have been recognized by ancient religions to the more contemporary positive psychology movement. The Roman philosopher Cicero said, “Gratitude is not only the greatest of the virtues, but the parent of all others.” Running water and driving directions — I have both. And so much more. I am a rich woman. TP Hear Connie Cronley read this column on the June 29 podcast. Visit TulsaPeople.com/podcast.

O
ne philosophy I find it easy to embrace — yet hard to remember — is that of gratitude. Quotations about gratitude ranging from the sappy to the sublime remind us to be thankful. I boil it down to something simple: Pay attention. Pay attention to the good things I’ve got, try to remember what it was like when I didn’t have them and think kindly of all the people who don’t have them. Like water. Years ago I visited South Africa when I was helping the late Edward Perkins write his memoir as a career Foreign Service officer and the fi rst Black U.S. ambassador assigned to South Africa during apartheid. We were there in 2001 as a country of great beauty and great pain was trying to rebuild itself after a national policy of racism based on the religious belief that the white race was God’s chosen people. Some of our accommodations in Cape Town and Johannesburg were luxurious beyond my imagination. One of the most memorable trips was to a poor village in the Eastern Cape province where 90% of the people spoke Xhosa. We happened to be there on World Water Day, appropriate because we were touring a dam and reservoir. I saw the slogan: Water is Life. I read the messages about conserving the precious resource of water. We were invited into the home of a woman

MICHELLE POLLARD
ne of the best things on a hot summer day is a cold, refreshing smoothie bowl. You won’t be disappointed by the Clovelly Bowl ($8-$10) from Bondi Bowls. With an acai base topped off with a handful of blueberries, raspberries and kiwi, this bowl tastes and looks like summer. Bondi Bowls is slinging acai from its food truck window all season. For new owner Blake Curtin, the company is all about good, healthy food and great conversations. TP

rom the moment you walk through the doors of Mr. Kim’s, it’s an experience. Experiential dining is what chef Ben Alexander had in mind with the creation of Mr. Kim’s. He’s taken the concept of Korean barbecue — with gas grills built into the middle of dining tables — and elevated it with a sleek setting and interesting flavors. “I would describe Mr. Kim’s as an Asian steakhouse that is heavily influenced by the flavors and cooking methods typically associated with Korean-style barbecue,” Alexander says. For the uninitiated, Korean barbecue is not the same as American barbecue. Rather, Korean barbecue refers to the method of grilling meats, seafood and vegetables on a tabletop gas grill. Customers can grill the beef, pork and seafood themselves, or the staff can do it for them. Many people choose for the waitstaff to do the cooking. Having twice visited Mr. Kim’s, we were able to try several menu items and get a feel for the best way to order. Perhaps the smartest choice is to try the chef ’s tasting menu, giving you a variety. (Editor’s note: Many menu prices fluctuate based on supply chain.) We ordered a la carte, first trying the wagyu snowflake dumplings upon the staff ’s recommendation. The dumplings were perfect, mightily stuffed with an umami beef flavor and topped with a chili crunch ponzu sauce. The crunch was a nice touch to break the softness of the dumpling. For a group, order a few appetizers, including the steak tartare with caviar. When it comes to selecting foods for the grill, it’s a hard choice. Unless you plan on spending a lot for a celebration or special occasion dinner, you’ll have to keep track of what you’re ordering or the check might shock you. We tried the fi let mignon and prime ribeye, both of which were about 4 ounces. Other cuts of beef include a boneless galbi short rib, prime strip, prime brisket and the crème de la crème — the A5 wagyu.
“The A5 wagyu from Japan is definitely a unique menu item,” Alexander says. “If you’ve never had A5 wagyu, you will be blown away by its incredible marbling of fat and its rich umami flavor.” For pork options, Mr. Kim’s has pork belly, pork bulgogi and bacon. Any of these would be terrific seared on the hot grill. We also tried the seafood options — shrimp and diver scallops (no longer on the menu), both of which have great flavor once grilled. After warming the grill, it is coated with wagyu fat, imparting just a little of that great flavor to whatever you order. Veggies aren’t entirely necessary since a nice salad with ginger dressing is served as a fi rst course, but if you want something fresh to accompany your dinner, vegetables include shishito peppers, broccolini, Japanese eggplant and king trumpet mushrooms. All table grill orders are served with banchan. These little side dishes function as complements to grilled meats and vegetables. They also can be placed on leaves of lettuce (which also accompany dinner) to be used as lettuce wraps with any of the grilled dishes. Our server mentioned some of the side dishes — like daikon radish — are nice palate cleansers in between courses. The banchan changes frequently. The times we visited, we sampled a tart and spicy scallion salad, chile cucumbers, red and white kimchi, and sesame-fl avored collard greens. Korean potato salad is another banchan favorite that is often served. These little round bowls of fl avor add much to the experience at Mr. Kim’s. Rice is ordered separately, and options include plain steamed rice, kimchi fried rice, corn cheese (corn mixed with mayo, peppers, onion and cheese), and egg and butter rice. Our server recommended the egg and butter rice — a steaming bowl of rice with a 63-degree poached egg mixed into the bowl tableside. Chopped scallions add to the flavor of the warm rice. Mr. Kim’s also has a kid’s menu, including steak, teriyaki chicken or steamed vegetables. Table grill orders come with a refreshing after-dinner sorbet. We sampled the tangerine variety, which came in small stone bowls that kept the sorbet ice cold. For something with more of a wow factor, Mr. Kim’s has seasonal cotton candy. Mr. Kim’s is named for Alexander, who as well as being chef is the vice president of culinary operations for the McNellie’s Group. Alexander was born in Inchon, Korea, in 1982 and given the name Kim Young Duk at birth. He and his sisters came to the United States in 1984 by their adoptive parents, Phil and Nancy Alexander. For Alexander, the restaurant is about more than creating a unique dining experience. It’s also a tribute to his Korean heritage. TP

HOT DOG! A TRIO OF CONEY HOT SPOTS Coney Island Hot Weiners is a true Tulsa original. Started in 1926 by Christ Economou, Coney Island has been a staple of downtown Tulsa for generations. Not much has changed at the coney shop, including the owners. The Economou family maintains ownership today. Sitting at one of the little school desks eating hot dogs covered with chili in steamed buns — cheese and onions optional — is a rite of passage for kids and a tradition for old timers. It’s something longtime Tulsans can’t imagine home without. 107 N. BOULDER AVE. | 918-587-2821 | CONEYISLANDHOTWEINERS.COM

There’s nothing like a hot dog at a baseball game. Top it with chili, cheese and onions, and it’s a home run. The differences between a chili dog and a coney are slight, but coneys tend to be smaller, with thick chili and steamed buns. But while cheering on the Tulsa Drillers, we’ll concede to the two being equals. Squishy hot dog buns, steamy frankfurters and ballpark chili are even better under the lights of a ball field. ONEOK FIELD, 201 N. ELGIN AVE. | 918-744-5901 | TULSADRILLERS.COM Coney I-Lander helped to make the coney ubiquitous in Tulsa. With several locations in Tulsa, plus Broken Arrow, Jenks and Owasso, a coney is never too far away. These classic coneys with chili, mustard and onions are perfect. Add cheese, if you please. The menu at Coney I-Lander has always been simple. No reason to mess with a good thing. Beyond coneys, try the tamales covered with chili or a Frito pie. The secret family chili recipe is good enough you might just want a bowl. Top it with cheese and ask for a side of crackers for the perfect bite. LOCATIONS AT CONEYI-LANDER.COM. — NATALIE MIKLES
FRESH TAKE It’s easy to spot the Bondi Bowls food truck with its bright pink exterior and long line of customers waiting for a refreshing smoothie bowl. With its mission to build community around healthy food while encouraging meaningful conversations, Bondi Bowls is about more than just good food. Owner Blake Curtin immediately connected with this mission after working at the original food truck in Edmond. “I (fell) in love with the job — being outside, meeting hundreds of people throughout the day,” Curtin says. When the opportunity arose to buy the Tulsa Bondi truck, he jumped on it. A student at the University of Oklahoma, Curtin decided to move his studies online so he could pursue this entrepreneurial dream. Since March, the Tulsa truck has been slinging bowls. You can choose from Bondi’s classic bowl options or build your own bowl. Each bowl has an acai or pitaya (dragon fruit) base, topped with fresh fruit and add-ins like homemade granola, peanut butter and local honey. The Newport bowl ($8-$10) has an acai base with vegan granola, Nutella and banana. It’s the perfect sweet treat for a summer day, as is the Malibu bowl ($8-$10) with its pitaya base topped with blueberries, banana and strawberries. Not in the mood for a bowl? Go for Bondi’s hand-squeezed original or strawberry kiwi lemonade. Locate the Bondi Bowls truck at bondibowls. com/tulsa. une is a magical month in Tulsa. It’s the month when we want to spend all our free time outside. Sit on the patio at Wild Fork for drinks and dinner. Or let the kids play on the green space during an al fresco dinner on the patio at Pub W. Patio dining is in full swing as we breathe in all the wonderful vibes of summer before withering away in the late summer heat. Th is also is the time for food experiences at home. It’s time for pulling herbs and lettuce from our home gardens, for grilling summertime dinners to enjoy outside and for inviting neighbors and friends over for backyard fun. Chips and salsa are always in season. Here’s a trio of salsa recipes perfect for porch sitting or pool lounging this summer. — NATALIE MIKLES This sweet salsa has a little heat from the peppers. You might want to drain it before serving. It’s great alongside traditional chips and salsa for a change.

In a large bowl, combine the cantaloupe, kiwi, mango, orange, peppers, shallot and pineapple. Cover and refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Add strawberries just before serving. To make chips, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush each tortilla with butter, and cut into 8 pieces. Combine sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle over the tortillas. Place on baking sheets. Bake for 10-14 minutes or just until crisp.

Black bean salsa
Serve this salsa with tortilla chips, or use it as a topping for grilled chicken or tacos. Use fresh corn when it’s in season.
BLACK BEAN SALSA
2 (16-ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained 1 (18-ounce) package frozen corn, thawed 2 tomatoes, seeded and chopped 1 red onion, finely chopped 1 avocado, chopped 2 jalapeños, seeded and chopped 1/2 cup chopped cilantro 1 1/2 tablespoons red wine vinegar Juice of 2-3 limes Salt and pepper, to taste
In a large bowl, mix all ingredients. Taste to see if it needs more lime, salt or pepper. Cover and chill 2 hours or overnight. Throw your vegetables on the grill before turning them into this flavor-packed salsa.
GRILLED VEGGIE SALSA
MICHELLE POLLARD
3 large tomatoes 1 yellow onion, halved 1 red bell pepper 1 poblano pepper 4 jalapeño peppers 3 tablespoons olive oil 3 cloves garlic 1/2 cup chopped cilantro Juice of 1 lime Salt, to taste
Prepare grill and heat to medium-high. Brush tomatoes, onions and peppers with olive oil. Place on grill and cook until slightly charred. Flip to char on all sides, turning frequently. Let veggies cool slightly before working with them. Remove stems and seeds from veggies. Place all in a food processor. Add garlic, cilantro, lime and salt. Pulse until smooth. Leaving it chunky is fine, too. TP
Boss and TV star ANDOLINI’S FEATURED ON UPCOMING COOKING CHANNEL PROGRAM. IT’S ALWAYS GREAT TO SEE LOCAL BUSINESSES MAKE NATIONAL NEWS. On June 26, Andolini’s will be featured on the Cooking Channel show “Carnival Eats.” A watch party will take place at the Cherry Street location. It’s not the first time Andolini’s has received national attention. Mike and Jim Bausch’s Andolini’s Pizzeria has been featured on the Food Network and was named one of the top 10 pizzerias in the country by TripAdvisor. Mike Bausch says each time they receive a national accolade, it brings more attention to Andolini’s — and to Tulsa. “It helps establish Tulsa as a food destination and a place where there’s an incredible culinary scene,” Bausch says. Producers reached out to Bausch about a show on Tulsa’s Linde Oktoberfest. “The Hunt for Breaded Oktoberfest” looks at unusual foods served at the festival, and Andolini’s definitely fits that bill. The Bausch brothers created an Oktoberfest pizza with sauerkraut, spicy mustard, house-made bratwurst and pierogies that is served from their food truck at the annual festival. Rather than red sauce, the pizza is covered in a roasted garlic spread. It’s topped with pecorino romano and mozzarella cheese. The pizza will be on the menu at all Andolini's locations the week the show airs. Bausch says the bratwurst, which they case and cook themselves, plus the pierogies, make this pizza an Oktoberfest original. He says it’s a good example of Andolini’s style — food that’s not pretentious but entirely made from scratch. Andolini’s is best known for pizza, of course, but creating a delicious pierogi for this pizza wasn’t outside the box for the Bausch brothers. “Between my brother, me and Prossimo chef Scott VanTuyl, we know how to create pretty much anything,” Bausch says. “For a long time, we were pigeonholed as the pizza guys. But we know how to cook.” Since Andolini’s opened its first location in Owasso 17 years ago, it’s become a favorite pizza place for many in Tulsa. It’s a success Bausch says he couldn’t have imagined all those years ago when the first restaurant opened. “I think the success of Andolini’s is about the team, the staff,” Bausch says. “But the north star is always the customer’s experience with the food. The north star is not ‘make as much money as possible.’ We create menu items we’re still excited to eat. We’re stoked about the cool environment and ambiance. We’re stoked about eating the food. It’s stuff we’re into. I think that level of being genuine and endearing has resonated with people over the past 17 years.” — NATALIE MIKLES TulsaPeople.com

New name, same bagel
Turkey avocado sandwich on an everything bagel
Old School Bagel Cafe is now New York Bagel Cafe. Longtime Tulsans will remember when New York Bagel opened in Tulsa. The first stores opened in Stillwater in 1986 and Tulsa in 1991. At that time, it was a novelty and the place to find the best boiled and baked bagels in a number of flavors. In 2009, new owners changed the name to Old School Bagel Cafe, opening in Brookside, 3723 S. Peoria Ave., and later in south Tulsa, 6805 S. Yale Ave. The name has come full circle, and Old School is now New York, coming back to its roots and hopefully clearing up any confusion. The name New York Bagel Cafe is a nod to the traditional way the bagels are made. New York Bagel has many types of bagels including sesame, poppy, garlic, multigrain, jalapeño, blueberry, sundried tomato and cinnamon raisin. There also are great bagel sandwiches, salads, muffins, espresso and legendary cookies. — NATALIE MIKLES
Tanner Conklin
Vodka of VOLITION While Tanner Conklin’s first attempt to purchase a liquor store fell through, it motivated her to do more than she originally envisioned. “I was so upset about this,” she says. “I was feeling really disrespected, so I decided I was going to do something bigger and just be a thousand times more successful than I would have been if I had owned a liquor store.” Instead of one store, she decided to launch a new brand of vodka that could be in scores of stores: Slight Spirits. She contracted with local Prairie Wolf Distillery (now Wanderfolk) who helped her perfect her blend and flavor profile. The distillery encouraged her to collect signatures from 100 locations willing to stock the vodka before securing a distributor. Conklin documented her process on her TikTok account (@slightspirits). Now in more than 100 locations across Oklahoma, this spritely vodka is infused with floral notes, hints of lavender, citrus and a touch of mint to cool its pink and malabar peppercorns bite. Its flavor profile makes it perfect for a tasty Moscow Mule, or as Conklin calls it, a Moscow Mantis (one appears on the bottle’s label and is symbolic to the brand). Slight Spirits can be found in restaurants, liquor stores and select bars in the Tulsa area, including Boston Title and Abstract, French Hen, Cellar Dweller, Cherry Street Liquor and more. — LAURA DENNIS

A collection of baked goods from Cookies, Cakes and Jews
NEW JEWISH BAKERY IN JENKS Tulsa has waited a long time for a traditional Jewish bakery. When Cookies, Cakes and Jews opened in Jenks at 610 W. Main St., it was great news for many. Come early for a stocked bakery case. Baker and owner Jimmy Darnell, who is Jewish, regularly changes items in the case, which makes it fun to find new things on a return visit. A few items of note include the bagels, challah bread, hamantaschen (shortbread cookies with a fruit filling), babka (filled, layered bread) and piroshki (sweet turnovers). Piroshki flavors include strawberry and apple caramel. The apple — made with layers of phyllo dough — is filled with an apple and caramel filling. Get one to go, then warm it up at home for a yummy pastry. For something more substantial, you’ll find a great menu of bagel sandwiches. These $7-$12 sandwiches
include the Shabbos Wabbos with pastrami, Swiss, sauerkraut, Russian dressing and a fried latke on your favorite bagel, as well as the Gyro Schmearo with tomato, dill schmear and feta. If you’ve longed for a place that makes New York-style black-and-white cookies and egg creams, Cookies, Cakes and Jews has both. The black-and-whites are a buttermilk cake base with vanilla/chocolate icing. And the egg creams are made the old-fashioned way with chocolate syrup, milk and seltzer. The bakery does special orders for catering and cakes. It also specializes in vegan desserts. “We loved the idea of opening a Jewish bakery because there is nothing like it in Tulsa,” Darnell says. “We get so many people that drive an hour to just come see us for a special order of our Gruyère knishes.” — NATALIE MIKLES

SHAE MOSS Bartender/bar manager at Cherry Street Kitchen, 111 W. Fifth St. How would you describe Cherry Street Kitchen? A casual, fun atmosphere with fresh, tasty breakfast and lunch items, as well as a bar. What is the most popular meal on the menu? Turkey chipotle melt panini with fries.
MICHELLE POLLARD; SOUND BITE: TIM LANDES
SHAWARMA’S THE STAR Chicken and beef shawarma serve as protein options for many of the restaurant’s dishes. It’s marinated and cooked on a skewer on-site, all trimmed to order.
What is your favorite thing on the menu and why? I love the Mega Bombastic panini — it’s like an adult grilled cheese sandwich and it is amazing.
FRESH EATS The Shawarma Salad ($8.99) is a great bread-free option. Warm shawarma chicken tops a bed of crisp Romaine lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes and carrots, served with a sprinkling of feta cheese, tzatziki sauce and dressing.
What is the most popular cocktail on the drink menu? Mimosas and bloody marys come in first, then the adult cherry limeade. Any tips or suggestions for diners? Always ask about our specials of the day. You never know what kind of fantastic creation we may have available. Where are you eating/drinking elsewhere in town? I’m usually found at Mexican places enjoying margaritas and eating tacos or enchiladas. — TIM LANDES TulsaPeople.com

A 1920s image of the Municipal Building, 124 E. Fourth St. A brick sidewalk plaza, left, is an ode to early Tulsa when the streets were paved with bricks.
STORIED PAST STORY AND COMPOSITE IMAGE BY PATRICK MCNICHOLAS
I
n 1919, after two years of construction delays, the Tulsa Municipal Building finally opened its doors at 124 E. Fourth St. The four-story Neo-Classic building featuring a Greek Classic façade was designed by architect Joe Bruce, who also helped design the Mid-Continent Tower located next door. It housed all city offices and operated as city hall. Like many city hall locations of Tulsa’s past, the building was utilized until larger facilities were necessary. In the case of the Municipal Building, it nearly became Tulsa’s civic center, but plans were abandoned due to effects of the Great Depression. The city eventually moved to a new home in 1969, and the Municipal Building was deserted during the height of urban renewal. After 50 years as the seat of government in Tulsa, it sat vacant until redevelopment was finally imagined in 1973. Restored and renamed as the Old City Hall Building, the renovations and reuse of the structure qualified it for the National Register of Historic Places. In 1975, the building became only the second Tulsa structure to be added to the national registry and sparked a preservation movement downtown that shifted from demolition to renovation, which continues today.
